Sofas and sectionals that fit the room and the door

The mistake we see with sofas is a room that got measured and a doorway or elevator that didn't. A sectional adds a second question, which end the chaise sits on, and makers name the sides in different ways. Measuring, left-facing and right-facing, fabric and leather, and what a made-to-order sofa takes each have a guide here.

Questions Islanders ask

Short answers, and the guide behind each

What does left-facing or right-facing mean on a sectional?

It's the end the chaise or the long arm sits on, and makers name it from different spots. Ashley, Island Living and Decor-Rest read the side as you face the piece; La-Z-Boy reads it from the seat, so its labels run the other way. On a sectional ordered in the store, the invoice carries a drawing of the side it faces, with the measurements next to it. Each maker's labels are laid out in left-facing vs right-facing sectionals.

Will a sofa fit through my door?

A sofa passes a doorway on an end or on its side, which makes its depth and height the two figures to check against the narrowest opening, door fully open. After the door come the hallway and any turn at the head of the stairs. A new home built to BC's code can have a main door as narrow as 810 mm, about 32 inches, and an older house can be tighter. How to measure the way in is in will the sofa fit through the door.
