A sofa fits through a door when one of its sides, or its profile tipped at an angle, is narrower than the door's clear opening. It also has to make the turn that comes next. In BC the building code sets a house's main entrance door at 810 mm, about 31.9 in, and most room doors at 760 mm, about 29.9 in. A house can be wider than that, and an older one can be narrower.
The door is rarely the only tight spot. A hall ceiling, a stair landing or a storm door stops a sofa just as well. At Merit Home Furniture I would rather work this out before the order, because delivery day is the wrong day to find out.
Will a sofa or couch fit through the door? Three sofa numbers and one door number
Whether a sofa or couch fits comes down to its width, depth and height against the door's clear opening. That is the gap between the latch-side stop and the face of the open door, which the BC code measures with the door at 90 degrees. A plan gives the slab size, and the open slab and stops eat into it.
A sofa almost never goes through on its legs. It goes on its back or stood on one arm, so width hardly matters for doorway fit. If the depth or the height is under the clear opening, the sofa passes straight. If both are over, it is tipped and fed through at an angle on its profile. The sectional guide shows how to measure the door opening, frame to frame.
BC door, hallway, ceiling and stair minimums in inches
These are BC Building Code minimums for a house; one built before the rule may fall short. Inches are the millimetres divided by 25.4.
| Where | Code minimum | For a sofa |
|---|---|---|
| Main entrance door | 810 mm (31.9 in) | Just under the 32 in most Ashley sofas ask for |
| Bedroom, den and most room doors | 760 mm (29.9 in) | Needs a low back or a slim profile |
| Hallway inside a home | 860 mm (33.9 in) | Narrower than every sofa depth in the second table |
| Hall or vestibule ceiling | 2.1 m (82.7 in) | An 88 in sofa cannot stand straight up |
| Unfinished basement, under beams | 2.0 m (78.7 in) | Loveseats stand on end; long sofas do not |
| Stair landing | As wide and as long as the width of the stair | A turning landing can be a tight square |
| Headroom over a house landing | 1,950 mm (76.8 in) | Often the lowest ceiling on the route |
Measuring the route from the truck to the room
The route is every opening between the driveway and the sofa's spot, in the order a crew meets them, and it's worth measuring before shopping for a new sofa.
- Outside. Gate, path, porch steps, and any storm or screen door, which can be narrower than the door behind it.
- Front door. Clear opening with the door fully open, and the height.
- Hall. Narrowest width, ceiling height at each turn, and the distance from each doorway to the wall facing it.
- Stairs. Width between the handrails, the landing size and the headroom over it.
- Room door. Clear opening again; the code lets room doors be narrower than the front door.
- Condo elevator. Door width, cab depth and height, and whether the building books it for moves.
The obstacles people forget sit above head height or below hand height. A stairwell light, a newel post, a baseboard heater in a narrow hall, or a step up at the front door can all stop a sofa.
How accurate do my measurements need to be?
The nearest half inch is plenty if the rounding goes the safe way: the door down, the sofa up. A half inch over on paper is a no.
How much hallway space do I need to turn a sofa?
Hallway space for turning a sofa depends more on the ceiling than on the floor. A sofa 38 in deep cannot roll down a 33.9 in hall on its legs. It travels on its back or one arm, profile first, as at the door.
The turn into a room is harder. A long piece cannot swing flat through a 90 degree corner in a hall that narrow. It is stood on end and pivoted instead, which takes a ceiling taller than the sofa. Under an 82.7 in ceiling, an 88 or 89 in sofa will not stand straight, while a loveseat at 66 to 70 in stands easily. A doorway into a large room, or a higher ceiling at the turn, gives a full sofa its swing.
What Ashley's minimum doorway width says about our sofas
Ashley prints a minimum doorway width on many of its pages. Of the 43 active Ashley listings on our site that carry it, 36 say 32 in, three say 30, two say 34 and two say 36. A 32 in figure is a hair over the code's entrance door, and about two inches over a room door.
| Piece | W x D x H (in) | Maker's minimum doorway |
|---|---|---|
| Larkinhurst sofa, $1,699.00 | 89 x 39 x 38 | 32 in |
| Lonoke left-arm sofa (sectional piece) | 80 x 38 x 40 | 36 in |
| Decor-Rest 2401 sofa, $1,399.00 | 81 x 38 x 34 | Not printed |
The Larkinhurst has no flat side under 38 in, yet Ashley says 32 in takes it. The seat sits lower than the back, so tipped back it is slimmer than its box. Ashley does not say whether 32 means the slab or the clear opening, so the cautious reading is clear opening. By the Lonoke's 36 in figure, a code-minimum front door is too narrow. Prices were read again on 16 October 2026, before applicable taxes.
Do fit calculators work for curved arms and irregular shapes?
Online fit calculators work from the box. Rolled arms like the Larkinhurst's, a curved back or a chaise end make the real shape smaller in places and awkward in others. For irregular furniture the box is the cautious number, and a tape on the piece settles it.
Should I remove the door to move a sofa?
Removing the door pays when the measured opening is within an inch or two of the sofa's profile. Lifting the slab off its hinge pins gives back the space the open door took, and the stop moulding can come off too. Measuring door on and door off turns the gain into a number.
Taking the legs off lowers a sofa by the leg height, which helps when it passes on its back. Many legs screw in, not all, and the product page or maker's sheet says which. When the fit is tight even then, a patio slider or basement walkout can be far wider than the front door. A window is a job for movers with equipment.
What kind of sofa fits through a small doorway?
The sofas that fit through a small doorway are short, low or in pieces. Length decides the turn and the profile decides the door.
- Apartment-size sofas. La-Z-Boy builds apartment-size versions of the Kennedy, the Bexley and the Olson. The Kennedy page lists 69 in wide, 38 deep and 39 high, at $1,449.00, short enough to stand up in a code-minimum hall.
- Made-to-order lengths. The Island Living Fernwood sofa, 84 x 35 x 37 in, is on display at our Duncan store, and Island Living also builds the Fernwood as an apartment sofa.
- Loveseats. The Larkinhurst loveseat keeps the sofa's profile at 66 in wide, at $1,599.00, short enough to stand under 76.8 in of landing headroom.
- Sectionals. Each piece travels alone, so sectionals sold piece by piece go where a sofa cannot; sectionals for tight rooms covers the layouts.
Reclining sofas and power pieces do not come apart and weigh more, and a sleeper sofa hides a mattress and folding frame. Those need room to spare at every opening, and loveseats on our site are the usual fallback.
When the tape says it fits and the delivery team still can't get it in
When the tape says yes and the delivery team can't get the sofa in, the slab was usually measured instead of the opening, or the turn was skipped. Telling us the route when the order is written is the protection.
A sofa that will not go in is not simply sent back. Merit takes a 24% deposit on a special order, and exchanges get worked out with you, case by case, for up to 30 days.
The bigger cost is time. A replacement starts its own lead time: Ashley runs 4 to 6 weeks, Decor-Rest 8 to 10, Island Living made to order 6 to 8. A full-length sofa is the wrong buy for a house whose only way in is a code-minimum hall with a turn.
How much do movers cost compared with Merit delivery on the Island?
What movers cost depends on the company, the hours and the stairs, so a fair quote names the turn and the landing. From our Duncan store, delivery is $150 across the Island with assembly included, and a Gulf Islands order needs a call to check your island. Pickup at Duncan is free. Our other stores set their own delivery terms.
Ask Rubeena or me which sofa mistake costs people most, and the answer is a doorway or an elevator measured too late.
