Nanaimo is where the Merit name began. In 1984 my grandfather, Sandy Sandhu, bought a Nanaimo furniture store called Merit Interior Designs, and our family's other Merit stores grew out of it. My husband Michael and I run the Duncan store, and my sister is starting up in Nanaimo.

Of our four stores, Nanaimo is the one the family lists for Lantzville, Nanoose Bay, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Cedar, Ladysmith and Thetis Island. Merit keeps a strict no-pressure policy, so a first visit can be a slow walk around, a few measurements and a drive home to think it over.

Where is the best place to go furniture shopping in Nanaimo?

Decor-Rest 2003 three-seat sofa in cream fabric with rolled arms - Merit Home Furniture

The best place to go furniture shopping is a store that lets you sit on a piece as long as you like and tells you who made it. Nanaimo customers have been writing about the first part for years. Google's own topic tags on the Nanaimo listing include "no pressure sales".

Nine of the 60 Nanaimo reviews we read in September 2026 mention no pressure, the most of any Merit store. One customer wrote of shopping there "without the feeling of pressure that you find in other furniture stores."

For the second part, each maker has a guide of its own. Start with the two Island Living programs side by side, the Decor-Rest pieces we carry and what Mako does and doesn't say. Ashley and La-Z-Boy follow: what Ashley pieces are good for, and whether a La-Z-Boy is worth the money.

From the showroom floor

In Duncan, Michael and I have started meeting a new kind of customer. They bought a sofa or a mattress online, weren't happy with it, and now want to sit on the next one first. Some tell us they won't buy furniture online again unless they can try it. For shoppers between Qualicum Beach and Ladysmith, the Nanaimo floor is the place to do that trying.

What is the cheapest furniture shop in Nanaimo?

The cheapest furniture shop in Nanaimo depends on the piece, since no store is lowest on everything. What we can show you is where our own prices start. These were the lowest prices on our website on October 16, 2026, before applicable taxes, for pieces our Duncan store sells online.

Piece Lowest listed price
Sofa $549, Ashley's Olten Sofa
Recliner $449, Ashley's SimpleJoy recliner
Queen mattress $899, the Restwell Canary
Queen bed $299, Ashley's Alisdair sleigh bed, with headboard, footboard and rails
Dining table $249, Ashley's Gesthaven drop leaf table, 42 by 42 inches, seats up to 4

If the same piece is cheaper somewhere else, our Best Price Guarantee applies to it: find a better price and we'll refund 100% of the difference. A few lines show no price online, and the reasons a few pieces carry no price are set out in their own guide.

Living room, bedroom, dining and appliances at the Nanaimo store

The Nanaimo store sells living room, bedroom and dining furniture, mattresses and appliances. Rugs, lamps and paintings are part of the mix too, though the website no longer lists rugs, lamps or wall art.

Merit's website is the bigger catalogue. When we counted on October 16, 2026, it listed 1,041 living room pieces, 286 bedroom pieces, 62 mattresses and 232 dining pieces. No single floor carries all of that, Norwell Drive included. Before a trip made for one particular bed or sofa, a phone call tells you whether it's there to sit on or how long an order would take.

The site also lists seven Cozzia massage chairs, and Michael's massage chair guides go through them model by model. Ask the Nanaimo store whether one is set up before you come in to try it.

Does the Nanaimo store sell appliances?

Yes. Nanaimo sells appliances, and so do Campbell River and Port Alberni. Duncan is the exception, since it won't continue with appliances. Our website lists 682 appliances so far, from refrigerators, ranges and laundry pairs to 21 wine coolers and beverage centres, each stocked at our Campbell River or Port Alberni store. For anything else, phone the Nanaimo store.

How a wine cooler differs from a beverage centre helps before you pick one, and the rest of our appliance guides sit on one page.

How far is the Nanaimo store from Parksville, Lantzville and Ladysmith?

Each road distance starts from the town's centre on OpenStreetMap, and each bus connection comes from BC Transit's schedule data for the fall of 2026.

From By road, and by bus
Lantzville About 8 km. Route 31 Lantzville to Woodgrove, then Route 1 Rapid Line
Nanoose Bay About 18 km. Route 9 on its Northwest Bay Road trips, then Route 1
Parksville About 29 km. Route 9 Intercity to Woodgrove, then Route 1
Qualicum Beach About 41 km. Route 9 from the Ravensong exchange, then Route 1
Cedar About 18 km. Route 8 Cedar to the VIU exchange, then Route 40 VIU Express
Ladysmith About 31 km. Route 70 NCX to downtown Nanaimo, then Route 1

Route 1, the Nanaimo Rapid Line, stops at the Country Club exchange between downtown and Woodgrove. In October it runs 42 trips each way on a weekday and 35 on a Saturday. Route 9 makes 22 trips a weekday down to Woodgrove, 16 of them by way of Northwest Bay Road.

From Ladysmith, the NCX stops at 1st Avenue and Highway 1. It makes 7 trips each way from Monday to Thursday, 9 on a Friday and 8 on a Saturday. The bus works well for a first look, and the furniture itself can follow by delivery.

How far does local delivery go from the Nanaimo store?

Local delivery from the Nanaimo store serves the mid-Island towns named at the top of this page. Thetis Island is the one island among them, so ask the store how it handles that ferry. Gabriola isn't on the family's list, and it's best to check before counting on a delivery there.

The delivery terms Merit publishes are our Duncan store's: $150 across the Island, assembly included, and the same $150 as far as Nanaimo and Victoria. Some Gulf Islands are reachable by ferry as well, and the Duncan store gives the details by phone. Shipping a mattress across the Island may call for a different shipping method. The Nanaimo store sets its own delivery terms, so ask for them when you ask for your price. Our Island delivery and store guides collect the rest.

The wait depends on the maker more than the store. Pieces in stock take a few days to about a week. A special order is ready for pickup or delivery in 2 to 3 weeks for a mattress, 4 to 6 for Ashley, and 8 to 10 for Decor-Rest, Mako or Best. What sets a special order's wait is explained separately.

Do you offer old furniture removal?

Yes, we can take old furniture away when we deliver. From Duncan it usually costs $25 to $50 a piece, and sometimes it's included. If a new appliance is replacing an old one, ask the Nanaimo store what it charges to haul the old one out.

What the Nanaimo store can't do for you

Three things to know before the drive to Norwell Drive:

  • A delivery tomorrow. Merit doesn't promise next-day delivery, and the Nanaimo store can tell you the earliest date it has.
  • Second-hand furniture. Everything we list is new from the maker. For used pieces, the City of Nanaimo runs a Reuse Rendezvous weekend, when residents set free items at the curb, small furniture included. In 2026 it ran on July 18 and 19.
  • An order with nothing down. A special order takes a 24% deposit, so it's worth settling the size and cover before placing it.

Within 30 days we encourage exchanges, and each one is decided on its own. The deposit and exchange details are written up in full.

Planning a trip to 3230 Norwell Drive

For a sofa, bring the length of the wall it will stand against and the width of every door, hallway and elevator on the way in. Missed doorways and elevators are the sofa mistake Michael and I hear about. For a built-in cooler, bring the width, depth and height of the space, plus a photo of the room if you have one.

Our Duncan store is about 59 km south on Ingram Street, and we're also in Campbell River and Port Alberni.
