For a recliner that gets sat in every evening for years, yes. For a chair that fills a spare room, no. La-Z-Boy is an American upholstery maker, based in Monroe, Michigan, that builds recliners, sofas and sectionals to order in plants in the United States and Mexico.
Merit Home Furniture lists 162 La-Z-Boy pieces as of October 16, 2026, and 147 of them can be ordered through our Duncan store. Across the 54 La-Z-Boy recliners and lift recliners listed for our Duncan store, the middle price is about $1,500 before applicable taxes. What that money buys, more than anything, is lifetime parts coverage on the frame, springs and reclining mechanism.
My thoughts on La-Z-Boy furniture come down to that split. The parts that move and carry weight are covered for life. The cover and the seat cushions carry one year, the same as a chair a third of the price.
Are La-Z-Boy recliners worth the money?
A La-Z-Boy recliner earns its price when three things hold: someone uses it daily, it stays in the house for years, and the original buyer keeps the receipt. La-Z-Boy's Residential Upholstered Furniture Limited Warranty gives lifetime parts coverage on wood frame parts, springs and the reclining mechanism. Those are the load-bearing and moving parts of a recliner.
Labour is the catch. La-Z-Boy pays labour for one year. After that, its terms put labour, in-home inspection fees and part shipping on the owner, so a lifetime part can still cost something to fit.
The money is better spent elsewhere for a guest room, a cottage chair used a few weekends a year, or a chair that leaves when the room is redone. The SimpleJoy from Ashley is listed from $449.00 and can be ordered through Duncan. Ashley still covers its recliner mechanisms for five years.
Put a number on it. The gap between the Sparrow at $1,099.00 and the SimpleJoy from $449.00 is $650. Spread over ten years of evenings, that is about $65 a year for the lifetime mechanism term and a cover of your choosing.
Two smaller things tip it toward La-Z-Boy for a daily chair. La-Z-Boy publishes seat width, depth and height for each style, so a chair can be matched to a person on paper first. And each chair is built in the cover picked at order, rather than whatever colour a warehouse had.
The short version I give a couple choosing a recliner for whoever sits in it every night: a La-Z-Boy is built to be repaired, not replaced. If that person will wear a mechanism out, the lifetime parts term earns the difference. If the chair is for company, buy the cheaper one and spend the rest on the room.
La-Z-Boy's recliner warranty next to Ashley's, part by part
Both makers publish their residential terms. This is how each maker's own warranty page reads on October 3, 2026. Merit backs the maker's warranty, orders the parts and does the repair.
| Part | La-Z-Boy | Ashley |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Lifetime parts | Limited lifetime |
| Reclining mechanism | Lifetime parts | 5 years |
| Electrical parts and motors | 3 years parts | 1 year |
| Standard foam cushions | 1 year | 1 year |
| Fabric and leather | 1 year | 1 year |
| Labour | 1 year | 1 year |
| Who it covers | Original buyer | Original buyer |
The mechanism row is where these two makers differ on a recliner. Lifetime against five years is the gap; frame, cover, foam and labour come out level. La-Z-Boy also lists its springs and spring systems at lifetime parts, and gives power parts three years against Ashley's one.
Lift chairs are the exception inside La-Z-Boy. Its lift mechanism and base carry three years on parts, and the Luxury-Lift 3BL styles carry three years on the reclining mechanism and springs too. A lift chair buyer should not expect the lifetime term.
What a La-Z-Boy recliner costs on Vancouver Island
These counts come from our live listings on October 16, 2026. Prices are before applicable taxes, and sectional prices are per piece.
| La-Z-Boy piece | Listings |
|---|---|
| Recliners | 57 |
| Lift recliners | 6 |
| Reclining sofas | 26 |
| Reclining loveseats | 23 |
| Sectionals | 12 |
| Chairs | 10 |
| Sofas and ottomans | 8 each |
| Loveseats | 7 |
| Sleeper sofas | 5 |
Of the 162, 16 show no price and are quoted in person: 5 sectionals, 4 reclining sofas, 5 reclining loveseats and two single pieces. The La-Z-Boy reclining sofas and the La-Z-Boy loveseats that recline each have their own guide.
What is the average price of a La-Z-Boy recliner?
Of the La-Z-Boy recliners we can order through Duncan, the middle price is about $1,500. Most of them sit between $1,000 and $2,000, and the dearest is the Apollo at $3,349.00. A La-Z-Boy style usually comes in several versions, from a manual recliner to power with headrest and lumbar, so ask which version a listed price covers.
Five chairs show how size and price move together. Widths are La-Z-Boy's published figures for the wall recliner version of each style.
| Chair | Width | Listed from |
|---|---|---|
| Collage | 29.5 in | $1,099.00 |
| Pinnacle | 33 in | $1,599.00 |
| Sparrow | 33.5 in | $1,099.00 |
| Kodie | 33.5 in | $2,249.00 |
| Jasper | 40 in | $1,249.00 |
Width does not set the price. The Kodie costs almost twice the Sparrow at the same 33.5 in, because the Kodie has a taller base and deeper 22 in seat.
Why is La-Z-Boy so expensive?
A La-Z-Boy costs more mainly because each chair is built after it is ordered, in the cover the buyer chose. La-Z-Boy's own page for the Sparrow wall recliner lists 598 cover options. A maker cutting every chair to one order, from that many fabrics and leathers, cannot price like a factory running one grey fabric by the container.
The warranty is a cost too. A lifetime parts promise on a mechanism has to be funded for as long as the chair is in use, and that sits inside the price.
Where the chairs are made adds to it. La-Z-Boy's heritage page lists three US plants, in Dayton, Tennessee, Neosho, Missouri and Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and three in Mexico. The Reed listing carries La-Z-Boy's own line: "Handcrafted in the U.S.A. with U.S. and imported parts."
The wait is part of the price as well. La-Z-Boy sofas and loveseats take 8 to 10 weeks to arrive ready for pickup or delivery. For a chair, ask what's in stock first; a custom La-Z-Boy chair is also 8 to 10 weeks.
Common problems with La-Z-Boy recliners, and who pays to fix them
The trouble La-Z-Boy's warranty plans for is mostly wear on the parts with short terms. This is how the maker's terms handle the usual complaints:
- Pilled or worn fabric on the arms. The fabric term is one year and "applies to seam failure, fabric separation and nap loss." Pilling is not on that list.
- A power recliner that stops working. Electrical parts and motors carry three years on parts and one year of labour. Battery packs get one year on parts and no labour.
- Leather that fades or does not match a replacement panel. Leather carries one year, and the term "does not cover dye lot match or fading."
- A broken mechanism, spring or frame part. The part is covered for life; after the first year the labour is the owner's.
Getting a La-Z-Boy repaired through Merit
- Find the receipt. La-Z-Boy says "Proof of purchase is required for all claims," and its warranties stay with the original buyer.
- Call the store you bought from. La-Z-Boy sends claims through the authorized dealer. For a chair bought at Merit, that is us: we order the parts and do the repair.
- Ask about labour past year one. The part may be free while the visit is not, so get the cost before booking.
- Mention a SmartOne plan if you bought one. SmartOne from Zucora is the extended plan, up to 5 years, and a La-Z-Boy recliner can carry one like anything else we sell.
How long do La-Z-Boy recliners usually last?
La-Z-Boy publishes no lifespan in years. Ashley's page, for its own frames, says "Lifetime means the normal useful life of the product", which gives no number either. In practice the cover and seat foam set the clock on any recliner, since both carry one year. A chair whose mechanism is sound but whose cover is tired can go to an upholsterer.
Who makes better recliners than La-Z-Boy?
No single brand is the best for recliners. The useful question is what the chair has to do, and which brand on our site does that job for the money. Here is how the two largest recliner brands on our site compare:
La-Z-Boy
54 recliners through Duncan, the middle of them about $1,500. Lifetime parts on the mechanism, three years on power parts, the cover picked at order. Custom chairs take 8 to 10 weeks.
Ashley
Recliners from $449.00 on the SimpleJoy. Five years on the mechanism, one year on electrical parts. Ashley orders arrive in 4 to 6 weeks.
Picking a brand of recliner for a husband or wife who is tall or broad is where published measurements help. The Jasper has a 21.5 in seat width, and La-Z-Boy describes it as "ideal for larger users."
For someone who needs help standing, a maker that builds only lift chairs belongs beside La-Z-Boy on the list. The Destin from UltraComfort is listed at $2,149.00 and can be ordered through Duncan.
La-Z-Boy lift chairs and high-leg recliners
Three of our La-Z-Boy recliner listings are lift chairs, which tip forward to help someone stand. The Jean is listed from $1,499.00 and the Billie at $1,949.00. The third is the Clayton, which adds heat and massage versions. Both the Jean and Billie are 3BL styles, so the three-year Luxury-Lift terms apply. La-Z-Boy's 2BL lift styles get less, one year on the lift mechanism and base, so the style code on a lift chair matters before buying.
A high-leg recliner sits on exposed legs instead of a skirted base, so it reads as a living room chair until it reclines. The Charlotte High Leg Reclining Chair is listed at $1,749.00 and can be ordered through Duncan. Our full lift chair range covers every maker we carry.
Pets, children and keeping a La-Z-Boy cover clean
In a house with a dog or small children, the cover matters more than the brand. La-Z-Boy's iClean fabrics carry a three-year warranty against specific stains. Urine, juice, milk and washable marker are on its list; oil-based products, wax, ink and mustard are not. La-Z-Boy voids that warranty if a fabric treatment is applied, so an aftermarket spray costs the coverage.
Every La-Z-Boy has a cleaning code on the tag attached to it. Code W means "Spot clean only with water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner." Code S means "Spot clean only with a water-free dry cleaning solvent."
Leather needs distance from heat. La-Z-Boy says to keep leather furniture at least 12 in away from radiators and other heat sources, and warns that long direct sun fades any material.
When a La-Z-Boy is the wrong recliner to buy
La-Z-Boy is not Canadian-made, and I won't call it local. If a Canadian-built chair is the point, there are recliners built in Canada with their own guide.
A used La-Z-Boy comes with no warranty. "Warranties are not transferable," La-Z-Boy says, so the lifetime term ends when the first owner sells the chair.
A lift chair buyer gets three years on the lift parts, not lifetime. Anyone weighing a La-Z-Boy lift chair on the strength of the lifetime term is reading the wrong row.
A small room may suit a different kind of chair. A rocker needs room behind it, and a wall recliner does not; the kinds of reclining chair each have their own space needs.
These are heavy chairs. La-Z-Boy lists the Jasper wall recliner at 86 lb and the Kodie at 94.5 lb, before any power parts. A tight stairwell is worth measuring before the order.
