Merit Home Furniture in Duncan is a furniture and mattress store at 107 Ingram St, Duncan, BC V9L 1N8. It's open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and closed on Sunday. The number is (250) 746-5527, and my husband Michael and I run the store together.

Merit Home Furniture is our family's group of four stores on Vancouver Island, with the others in Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni. Duncan is the Merit store for the Cowichan Valley. The showroom holds display models of sofas and sectionals, recliners and lift chairs, bedroom suites, mattresses, dining sets, rugs, lamps and paintings.

We keep a strict no-pressure policy. Wander, sit in whatever catches your eye, lie down on a mattress or two, and take the measurements home to think about. Nobody will ring you the next day to ask how the thinking went.

Where can I find furniture in Duncan, BC?

You can find furniture at Merit's Duncan store, downtown on the block of Ingram Street between Canada Avenue and Jubilee Street. Ingram starts at Canada Avenue and runs west, so the turn to watch for is off Canada. We're a few doors east of the Cowichan Valley Regional District offices at 175 Ingram, which is the easiest landmark on the street.

Merit opened in Duncan in 2001 and moved into its current building on Ingram Street in 2011. The family's roots in the valley go back further than the building. My grandfather, Sandy Sandhu, opened his first store up the road in Lake Cowichan, and the Merit name came later, with a store he bought in Nanaimo.

For parking, the City of Duncan has four free three-hour lots downtown, three on Kenneth Street and one on Canada Avenue. Plenty of downtown streets have free two- and three-hour spaces as well.

Bus stop Distance and routes
Canada Ave & Lois About 110 metres. Routes 2 Mt. Prevost, 6 Crofton-Chemainus and 36 Ladysmith-Duncan Express, heading into town

Canada Ave & Station About 260 metres. Routes 2 to 9 and 36, plus the 66 CVX Cowichan-Victoria Express on weekends

From Mill Bay, routes 8 and 9 end at Village Green Mall, about 750 metres from our door. Route 8 comes in by way of Shawnigan Lake and Cobble Hill. The buses home leave from Canada Avenue and Station Street. In BC Transit's October 2026 schedule, the two routes make 13 trips into Duncan and 12 back from Monday to Thursday. On a Saturday it's 6 in and 5 back.

From Lake Cowichan, the weekday route 7 express stops at Canada Ave & Lois, the stop nearest our door. Other route 7 trips, and every Saturday trip, stop at Government & Station, also about 260 metres away.

What's on the Duncan showroom floor

The Duncan showroom floor covers the living room, the bedroom and the dining room, and chairs are what our Google listing singles out. Google's own tags on it include chair selection, raised in 10 reviews, and fabric selection, raised in 4. Across Merit, we have over 50 recliner styles in stock at any given time; call to ask which are on display in Duncan. With a recliner, fit comes before style: feet flat on the floor and your head resting on the back. That's where picking a recliner that fits your frame starts.

Mattresses are Michael's deepest subject: firm or soft, foam, latex or coil, and what a coil count actually tells you. The mattresses listed for our Duncan store come from two makers, Restwell and Restonic, with bedding from Health Guard and Natura. There's a guide to Restwell, model by model, and seven Restonic models sit in the Restonic mattress collection, six of them listed for Duncan. Beaudoin, a Quebec bed maker, is new to Duncan this fall, and its 961G metal bed frame is listed for our store. Other mattress brands are carried at our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores, and every mattress on the site sits in one collection. Our website also lists seven Cozzia massage chairs, and whether a particular model is set up in Duncan is worth a phone call before you drive.

The site lists far more than one showroom can hold. On October 16, 2026 it carried:

Treat the site as the catalogue and the Ingram Street floor as a sample of it. For one particular sofa or bed, call first, and we'll tell you whether it's on display in Duncan or how long it takes to order.

Does the Duncan store sell appliances?

Duncan is the one Merit store that won't keep carrying appliances. For a fridge, range or washer, our Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni stores still sell them.

Which furniture in Duncan is built to last?

Built-to-last furniture at Merit mostly means the Canadian-made upholstery and the solid wood. In our experience, Decor-Rest sofas and Island Living's Burnaby-made sofas hold up for more than ten years. Mako bedroom suites are solid wood, with no veneers, no MDF and no particle board, which makes them buy-it-once furniture.

Each of those makers is easy to look up. Island Living's made-to-order pieces are built in Burnaby, BC, in the fabric you choose, and how a Island Living order works through us is written up in full. Decor-Rest has made upholstery since 1972 and now builds from a 250,000 square foot base in Woodbridge, Ontario. Mako is based in Surrey, BC, and works in solid alder, pine and maple. A queen Mako Aspen panel bed is listed at $1,249.

One caution on Island Living. It also has an in-stock range made overseas, which we sell too, and every Island Living sectional we list comes from it. Those pieces aren't Canadian-made and can't be customized the way the Burnaby pieces can. The makers on our site that build in Canada are listed brand by brand.

Made to order in Canada

A Decor-Rest 2003 sofa is listed at $1,549 in fabric, before applicable taxes. Island Living keeps its prices offline, so an Island Living Ladysmith sofa is a quote to ask us for. You choose the cover, and the piece is built after you order it.

Ready-made and imported

A ready-made piece that's in stock is the quickest way to a new sofa. As Michael says, a $1,000 sofa is worth $1,000, and a $2,000 sofa is worth $2,000. For a tight budget, or a taste for changing styles, that's the right buy.

Which furniture store has the highest quality is a fair thing to wonder, and quality belongs to the piece more than the store. The question worth asking in any showroom, ours included, is who made it and where.

Buying furniture at the Duncan store, step by step

Buying furniture at the Duncan store follows the same order for most pieces, and none of it has to happen on the first visit.

  1. Plan the room with Michael. He'll go over your measurements with you, draw the room out and help settle the configuration, fabric and size.
  2. Get the price. Most pieces on our site show a price. A few, such as Island Living, are quoted instead. The reasons we quote those pieces come down to the maker's own rules, frequent sales and the options you can choose. Under our Best Price Guarantee, if you find a better price we refund 100% of the difference.
  3. Pay the deposit, and ask about financing. Special orders take a 24% deposit. We finance. Ask us how.* Our lender is Fairstone®. *On approved credit. Terms and conditions apply. An annual fee will be charged to your account as set out in the Retail Credit Agreement. See our Financing page for more details about our plans.
  4. Wait for it to arrive. What we have in stock takes a few days to about a week to reach you. Special orders run by maker: Ashley 4 to 6 weeks, Island Living 6 to 8, Decor-Rest, Mako and La-Z-Boy 8 to 10, and mattresses 2 to 3. Why a special order takes that long has its own guide. If a special order slips, we lend you furniture at no charge while you wait.
  5. Book the delivery. When the order is in, we call to book a time on our schedule, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5.
  6. Call us if anything goes wrong. Merit backs the manufacturer's warranty on what we sell, orders the parts and does the repairs. SmartOne by Zucora adds cover for accidents for up to five years from purchase, and sends someone to your home for the repair.
From the showroom floor

Left-facing and right-facing trip up plenty of sectional buyers. So when you order one, we draw which way it faces, with the measurements, right on the invoice. Then we ask you to go home and measure again to be sure it fits. Telling the two sides apart takes a minute once someone shows you.

Where the Duncan store delivers in the Cowichan Valley

Delivery from the Duncan store is $150 across the Island, assembly included, and the store covers the Cowichan Valley and the South Island. Duncan itself is small. The 2021 census counted 5,047 people on 2.06 square kilometres. The Cowichan Valley Regional District around it had 89,013 people over 3,472.48 square kilometres, and most of the communities in the table sit inside it.

Area Communities the Duncan store serves
Cowichan Valley Duncan, Cowichan Bay, Maple Bay, Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake and Mill Bay
The lakes Lake Cowichan, Youbou, Mesachie Lake and Honeymoon Bay
South Island The Malahat, Victoria and Port Renfrew
Gulf Islands Delivery to some Gulf Islands is available; call the Duncan store for details.

The valley is spread out, but we're in the nearby communities almost every week. A Victoria delivery from Duncan costs the same as one across town. A ferry run is a whole-day trip for us, so call the store for details, and Salt Spring deliveries and the ferry covers the rest. We can take the old sofa or mattress away when we deliver, usually for $25 to $50 a piece.

Which Merit store serves the rest of the Island?

Ladysmith and Thetis Island are served from our Nanaimo store on Norwell Drive, which also sells appliances. Port Alberni looks after the Alberni Valley and the west coast, and Campbell River the North Island and the Comox Valley.

Google reviews of the Duncan store

Customers of the Duncan store have left 106 reviews at 4.1 stars on our Google listing, counted on October 16, 2026. When we went through them on September 3, Michael had answered every one, the critical ones included, and he was named in 16. The first tag Google showed then was helpful staff, raised in 41 reviews.

No pressure is a theme customers raise in their own words. One review reads, "Ample selection and quality furniture, no-pressure sales, patient staff who answered all our questions." Another is blunter: "I didn't feel pressured to buy anything. They didn't hound me."

Two more reviews from the listing:

Before I had arrived, Michael had already done some homework to simplify and narrow down inventory to match the information provided to him over the call. When I arrived and introduced myself, Michael showed me some of the styles he thought might be suitable. It was important to me to support both a Canadian business and production. He helped me eliminate what was too big for my space and showed me options were available in a smaller size. There were several selections to choose from with a variety of fabrics and colours that I could personalize. Michael educated me on the different foam densities and fabric treatments, and pointed out different furniture design, functional features. He was attentive both to me and the other customers looking around. He gave me space to wander without shadowing but was always available when I had questions. He demonstrated wonderful customer awareness!

When the Duncan store isn't the right trip

The Duncan store won't suit every errand, and it's better to know that before the drive.

  • A delivery tomorrow. We don't promise next-day delivery.
  • A custom sofa by Friday. Made-to-order pieces are special orders, so only an in-stock piece arrives within the week.
  • A coffee table on its own. We don't deliver very small pieces by themselves, and a mattress going across the Island may need a different shipping method.
  • Changing your mind on a special order. The piece is ordered for you alone, so it pays to be sure of the size and fabric before the deposit goes down.

Exchanges are encouraged for up to 30 days, case by case, and the fine print on deposits and exchanges has the rest.

Before you drive to Ingram Street

Bring the room's measurements, a photo of the space and the width of the narrowest door on the way in, and we'll check the fit before anything is ordered. Ask for Michael if you'd like a hand planning the room; he has been in furniture since 2000.
