Vancouver Island guides

Bedroom furniture for Island homes

A bedroom set usually stays for years, so the tape measure matters more than the photo. The mattress top sets a nightstand's height, and the window sill sets a dresser's. The guides here take in dressers, nightstands, bed frame sizes and cabinet beds for small rooms. One is about Mako, a Surrey, BC company whose bedroom pieces are solid pine, maple and alder, with no veneer, MDF or particle board.

Questions Islanders ask

Short answers, and the guide behind each

How tall should a nightstand be?

The rule of thumb our nightstand guide uses is level with the top of the mattress, within about two inches either way. The mattress top is measured with the bed made up and any topper on. The nightstands on our site run from 16 to 30 inches tall, so the mattress top picks the number. Heights by maker, and the beds each suits, are in matching a nightstand to the bed.

Is coastal humidity bad for solid wood furniture?

Not in our experience. In more than four years of selling a lot of solid wood, we haven't seen or heard of a humidity problem with it. Wood still swells in damp air and shrinks beside a woodstove, and it's steadiest at Health Canada's 30 to 50 percent for homes. What to do at each level is in humidity and solid wood.
