A nightstand works best with its top level with your mattress top, or within about two inches above or below it. At that height a hand finds the lamp switch or a glass of water without anyone sitting up. I measure the bed first and choose the nightstand second, because beds vary far more than nightstands do.
The 48 nightstands among the bedroom furniture we carry on the Island run from 16 to 30.5 inches tall, and 24 of them sit between 24 and 28 inches. The mattress tops they have to meet run from 17.25 inches on a bunk bed to 31 5/8 inches on a tall stack.
What height should a nightstand be next to your bed?
Nightstand height is the distance from the floor to the top surface of the nightstand. The number it has to meet is the height of your mattress top, taken from the floor with the bed made up. I read the tape at the top edge of the mattress with the mattress protector and any topper on. Then I press a hand on the edge where you sit, since a soft pillow top sinks an inch or so under weight.
My rule is that number, give or take two inches. Inside that window the reach from the pillow stays short, and nothing on the nightstand drops out of sight below the mattress edge. Design writers split that window three ways:
- Level with the mattress top. The reach is shortest, and bed and nightstand read as one line across the room.
- Two to four inches above. Traditional rooms with tall headboards often go this way, and a reader gets the lamp a little nearer eye level.
- One to two inches below. Feng shui advice tends to favour level or slightly lower. Much lower than that and the switch starts to hide under the duvet line.
Should a nightstand sit taller than the bed?
A nightstand can sit taller than the bed by a few inches without trouble. Taller is the easier error to live with, because the top stays in view and the bedside table lamp sits nearer reading height. Lower is the one I'd steer a buyer away from. Three or more inches under the mattress puts the phone and the glasses below the edge of the bed, where a hand has to hunt for them in the dark.
How tall a bed really is: frame, foundation and mattress added up
Bed height is the sum of three parts: the frame, the foundation or slats, and the mattress. Each part has a height on its product page, so the mattress top can be worked out before anything arrives. These stacks use parts Merit lists, with heights from their own spec tables.
| Stack | Parts (inches) | Mattress top |
|---|---|---|
| Metal frame, standard foundation, 12-inch mattress | 7 1/8 + 9 + 12 | 28 1/8 in. |
| Metal frame, low-profile foundation, 12-inch mattress | 7 1/8 + 5 + 12 | 24 1/8 in. |
| Metal frame, standard foundation, pillow-top mattress | 7 1/8 + 9 + 15.5 | 31 5/8 in. |
| Metal frame, standard foundation, foam mattress | 7 1/8 + 9 + 6 | 22 1/8 in. |
| Bottom bunk with built-in slats, foam mattress | 11.25 + 6 | 17.25 in. |
The frame in those rows is the Beaudoin 961G, which stands 7 1/8 inches to the box spring. The 9-inch Beautyrest Traditional foundation in those stacks is carried at our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores. The 5-inch Tempur-Pedic flat foundation is a Campbell River piece. Neither foundation shows a price online, and either store will give its best price over the phone. Two mattresses in the table are listed for our Duncan store: the 12-inch Restwell Canary and the 15 1/2 inch Restwell Sparrow pillow top. The 6-inch foam mattress is the Seva Sleep Studio, which our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores carry for bunks and guest beds.
Of the 14 mattresses listed for Duncan, 13 give a height on the page. They run from the 12-inch Canary to the 16-inch Restonic Vernazza and Restonic Treviso. Duncan lists no box spring or flat foundation from Restwell or Restonic, so the two foundations in the table come from our other stores.
Swapping the foundation alone moves the mattress top four inches, which is a whole band on the nightstand table further down. A platform bed with built-in slats skips the foundation row, so the height to its slats replaces the first two numbers. There is more on frames in what a queen frame measures and holds.
Nightstand heights we list, from 16 to 30.5 inches
Nightstands at Merit fall into four height bands. Most come from Mako's solid wood bedroom lines (35) and the Ashley bedroom range (10). The counts cover all 48 active listings, with the Duncan-listed number in brackets, since Duncan handles online orders for now. Prices are as listed today on each product page, before applicable taxes.
| Height band | Meets a mattress top of | Duncan-listed examples |
|---|---|---|
| 16 to 22 in.: 11 listed (10 Duncan) | 14 to 24 in. | Mako Grace 2-drawer, 21.5 in., $349.00; LH Home Atlantis, 21.7 in., $649.00 |
| 23 to 26.5 in.: 12 listed (6 Duncan) | 21 to 28.5 in. | Ashley Shawburn, 23 in., $159.00; LH Home West, 23.62 in., $349.00; Ashley Battelle, 25 in., $249.00 |
| 27 to 28.5 in.: 16 listed (15 Duncan) | 25 to 30.5 in. | Mako Natalie, 27 in., $449.00; Ashley Landocken, 27 in., $499.00; Mako Saffron 2.5-drawer in solid maple, 28.5 in., $849.00 |
| 29.5 to 30.5 in.: 9 listed (6 Duncan) | 27.5 to 32.5 in. | Mako Grace 3-drawer, 30 in., $449.00; Mako Decora 3-drawer mini, 30 in., $399.00 |
The busiest band is 27 to 28.5 inches, which lines up with the commonest stack above: a standard foundation under a 12-inch mattress. Eleven of the 48 are listed only for Campbell River or Port Alberni, and those pages give that store's number to call.
Is 30 or 32 inches too tall for a nightstand?
A 30-inch nightstand suits a mattress top of 28 to 32 inches, which the pillow-top stack in the table reaches. Beside the 24 1/8 inch low-profile stack it rises about six inches past the mattress top, and the lamp switch ends up well above the pillow. Nothing we list as a nightstand reaches 32 inches. The tallest bedside pieces we carry are the Mako Supreme bedside towers at 49 inches tall and 12 deep, $649.00 each. They are storage beside the bed, not a surface at mattress height.
One nightstand design in three heights: the Mako Soho
Mako Wood Furniture, which the Province of BC calls "a furniture producer in Surrey", makes several nightstand designs at three heights. The Soho shows it most plainly. The Soho 2-drawer is 21.5 inches tall at $349.00. The Soho 2-and-a-half-drawer is 27 inches at $399.00, and the Soho 3-drawer is 30 inches at $399.00. All three are 22 inches wide and 18 deep, in solid pine.
That helps with a bed of unusual height: the design and finish get chosen once, and the height follows the mattress. In our listings the Grace, Polo and Decora lines repeat the same 21.5, 27 and 30 inch steps, and the Polo and Decora each add a 17-inch-wide mini.
Mako orders through Merit take 8 to 10 weeks, ready for pickup or delivery. Mako offers its own stain colours on each collection, and we can tell you which ones the Soho comes in.
Nightstand width, depth and placement beside the bed
Nightstand width sets how a pair looks against the bed, while depth and placement set how far the reach is. Merit's nightstands run 17 to 25.5 inches wide and 15.43 to 18.25 inches deep. Most of the Mako range is 18 inches deep, and 16 of the 48 are 22 inches wide. On a 10-foot wall, the space left for two nightstands depends on the mattress width:
| Bed | Mattress (in.) | Left on a 120-inch wall | Per side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 39 x 75 | 81 in. | 40.5 in. |
| Queen | 60 x 80 | 60 in. | 30 in. |
| King | 78 x 80 | 42 in. | 21 in. |
A headboard and frame add width past the mattress, so the overall width on the bed's own page is the figure to subtract. Beside a king on a 10-foot wall, even a 22-inch nightstand will not fit both sides once the headboard is counted. That is the wall Mako's minis are for; Mako calls the mini "the narrower version for tighter spaces".
A nightstand pushed close to the bed, with no more gap than the frame needs, keeps the reach from the pillow short. HealthLink BC's home safety checklist asks for "a light within reach of your bed", and for a walking aid kept within reach of it as well. The drawer opens toward the walkway, so it needs clear floor in front; Mako's full-extension glides bring the whole drawer out.
Nightstand height for older sleepers, kids' rooms and adjustable beds
For someone who gets out of bed slowly, the nightstand is where the phone, glasses and light wait until they are steady on their feet. The same HealthLink BC checklist asks that the bed height be easy to get in and out of. If a bed is raised or lowered for that reason, the nightstand follows the new mattress top. The bed height itself is a question for a doctor or occupational therapist.
Kids' rooms sit lower. The bottom bunk of the Ashley Halanton twin over full bunk is 11.25 inches off the floor, so a 6-inch mattress puts its top at 17.25 inches. The 16-inch Mako Brandon 1-drawer, $599.00, is the one nightstand Merit lists that low.
Tip-overs are the other concern in a child's room. Health Canada's assessment of free-standing clothing storage units, updated March 31, 2026, says units 686 mm (27 inches) or taller may pose a tip-over hazard to children. It counted 90 incident reports from 2011 to 2024, 12 of them deaths. Its list names chests and dressers, not nightstands. A drawer nightstand at 27 to 30 inches stands just as tall, though. Health Canada's standing advice is to attach furniture to a wall or stud with braces, anchors or straps.
An adjustable base takes the place of the frame and foundation, so its own height goes into the stack instead of those two rows. How adjustable bases are sized and set up covers the bases themselves.
Where nightstand height charts lead buyers wrong
A topper added later. A 3-inch topper lifts the mattress top 3 inches. A nightstand that sat level now sits three inches low, outside the two-inch window, so the tape comes out again after one goes on.
A set's nightstand on a different bed. A bedroom set's nightstand is sized for that set's bed. Put beside a bed on a low-profile foundation, it can stand four inches taller than the mattress.
Two heights in one room. Different styles on each side can look deliberate. Different heights look like a mistake every morning.
A folding bed measured closed. A cabinet bed such as the Cabos cabinet bed gets measured open and made up, the same as any bed. The top of the closed cabinet is not the number to match.

Matching a nightstand to your bed through Merit's Duncan store
The quickest match starts with two numbers: your mattress-top height and the overall width of the bed. Duncan has display models, and most Duncan sales are custom orders, so a call first tells you what is set up. Ashley pieces take 4 to 6 weeks and Mako 8 to 10, ready for pickup or delivery. The LH Home nightstands are on display in Duncan, so we can tell you what is available now.
From Duncan, delivery is $150 across the Island with assembly included, and pickup at the store is free. Gulf Islands deliveries go to some islands, and the store has the details. For a piece listed at Campbell River or Port Alberni, that store sets its own delivery terms. The rest of the room is in our bedroom furniture guides, starting with a dresser to stand with the nightstands. Furnishing a first apartment from scratch means deciding what to buy first, and a checklist for a first apartment puts that in order. Every nightstand we list on this collection shows its height in the spec table.
