Family run
Merit is a locally owned, family-run group of furniture stores. Sandy Sandhu bought the first Merit store, in Nanaimo, in 1984, and the Campbell River, Port Alberni and Duncan stores grew out of it. His eldest son, Jeet Sandhu, runs the stores today. As Jeet puts it, “Islanders are loyal to island businesses,” and each store works to earn that: a commitment to Canadian brands, big showrooms where you can see, touch and feel before you choose, and furniture that will sit at the centre of your family’s gatherings for years. The third generation is active in the stores now too, including Rubeena in Duncan and Sameena in Nanaimo.
Many of our customers are long-time community members and seniors who come back because thoughtful guidance and honest advice never go out of style. If that sounds like the kind of store you would rather buy from, come stroll ours.

We read hundreds of reviews of furniture stores in our region. The same complaints come up again and again. Here is, plainly, how Merit handles each one.
We give you a real timeline, and we will not promise next-day just to win the sale. When we have room in the schedule, we often deliver sooner than you expect. Honest beats optimistic.
We have a strict no-pressure policy and we train our salespeople to work with customers. Gentle, values-based service is the whole approach. Stroll, sit, ask, leave, come back. All fine.
Delivery is done by our own crew, caring, friendly and very professional, and assembly is part of the job. The people who deliver answer to the same family that sold it to you.
At Merit you deal with real people who help you through warranty claims. We even have our own furniture repair person on the team. If something goes wrong, you come to us, and we help sort it out.
The prices online are honest estimates: there is often a sale on, and a two-minute call gets you today's real number before you commit to anything.
Jeet Sandhu, the second generation of the family behind Merit, runs the stores today and stocks what lasts, with a firm commitment to Canadian-made lines like Decor-Rest and Restonic. If a piece will not go the distance, it does not go on our floor.

Often, yes. Several of our lines, including Decor-Rest, and Island Living at our Duncan store, are made to order in Canada in the fabric you choose. Take swatches home first; we would rather you be sure.
