Measuring help

Will it fit? Check your doorway and hallway before you buy

Enter the size of the piece and the doorway or hallway it has to get through. You'll see each way it can go, and how much room is left over.

Measure in

The piece

Quick fill: typical sizes, check the product page and use the real measurements.

Side to side. Usually the longest side.

Front to back.

Floor to the highest point.

Optional. For sofas and recliners, see the drawing.

Diagonal depth: lay a yardstick from the top back corner to the front edge of the arm (or the seat, if there are no arms). Measure from the bottom back corner up to the yardstick, keeping the tape square to it.

Your doorway

Inside the frame, at the narrowest point. With the door still on, measure from the face of the open door.

Floor to the top of the frame, inside.

    Your hallway corner

For a square turn from one hallway into another.

Wall to wall at the narrowest spot, past any trim or railing.

Measured the same way, past the corner.

Optional. Lets us check standing the piece on end.

      How to measure

      1. Get the width, depth and height of the piece from the product page, or ask the store for the tag measurements.
      2. For a sofa, loveseat or recliner, find the diagonal depth as well. The drawing above shows how.
      3. Open each door on the way in as far as it goes, then measure the opening inside the frame at its narrowest point. A door left on its hinges eats into the opening, so measure from its face or take it off.
      4. Measure each hallway from wall to wall at the narrowest spot, trim and railings included. Note the ceiling height near any tight turn.
      5. Measure twice and write the numbers down.

This checker is a guide. It treats walls as straight and corners as square, and it doesn't check stairs. Merit delivers with its own crew, and they can confirm. Assembly is part of the job, so for a bed or a sectional, check the biggest single piece.
