A chair that reclines, sized to you

A recliner tips its back and lifts a footrest when you work a lever, lean back or press a button. Recliners listed through Duncan run from $449 to $5,149 before applicable taxes. Size comes before fabric. The right one lets both feet rest flat on the floor and holds your head for a nap. Seat depth, wall space, power or manual, and who each kind is wrong for all get a guide below.

Questions Islanders ask

Short answers, and the guide behind each

Power or manual recliner: which is better?

A power recliner suits anyone who finds a lever or a push on the back hard work, and it stops at any angle. We see it as the answer for mobility trouble, since a lever or a push-back takes more effort as the years go on. Manual suits a spot far from an outlet, or a tighter budget: through Duncan, Ashley's manual recliners start at $449 and its power ones at $1,099. The trade-offs are in power recliners vs manual.

How much room does a recliner need behind it?

That depends on the kind. By the makers' figures, a wall recliner needs 3 inches (Ashley's Bladewood), about 4 on La-Z-Boy's Kodie and about 7 on its Pinnacle and Collage. La-Z-Boy's Maverick rocker needs about 12, and lift chairs 13.5 to 30 inches. How a wall recliner saves space behind, and what it takes in front, is in wall-hugger recliners for small rooms.

What is the most comfortable recliner?

The one that fits whoever sits in it most. Past the feet-on-the-floor test, a fist fits between the seat edge and the calves, and reclined, the head lands on the headrest with the heels on the footrest. The measurements to take at home are in choosing a recliner chair.
