What is a wall hugger recliner? The wall gap, the open length and ten La-Z-Boy and Ashley figures

La-Z-Boy Cade wall recliner - Merit Home Furniture

A wall hugger recliner is a recliner whose seat rolls forward on a track as the back goes down, so the chair can open close to a wall. La-Z-Boy's own model pages put that gap at about 4 inches on some styles and about 7 on others. Ashley lists its Nerviano at 4 inches.

The gap behind is the only space the chair saves. Fully open, every wall hugger in the table below still reaches 63.5 to 75.5 inches out from its back, by its maker's figure. At Merit Home Furniture we list wall hugger chairs, sofas and loveseats from La-Z-Boy, Ashley and Best Home Furnishings, all available through our Duncan store on Vancouver Island alongside the other recliner mechanisms we sell.

I've taken every clearance below from the maker's page for that exact model. La-Z-Boy's range page gives one figure for all its wall recliners, and its chair pages give another.

What is a wall hugger recliner, and how does it move?

A wall hugger recliner opens by moving forward. La-Z-Boy's range page describes the motion in one line. "They slide forward as you lean back and do not rock, providing added stability for those who prefer a steady surface when standing up."

A rocking recliner works the other way. Its back tips toward the wall as it opens, so it has to sit further out to clear it. On the Jasper, the one model where I read both versions, La-Z-Boy asks for about 12 inches behind the rocker.

On La-Z-Boy's manual wall recliners, a handle on the outside arm lifts the legrest into 3 locked positions. The back can also recline on its own, with the legrest down, by La-Z-Boy's description on our listings. The Vail page adds that the chair "does not rock and remains sturdy when sitting down or standing up to exit the seat". For someone who grabs the arms to stand, a frame that stays put matters more than the inches.

Other names for a wall hugger recliner, maker by maker

Each maker names the same mechanism differently, which makes listings hard to compare. These are the names on the chairs Merit carries:

  • Wall recliner: La-Z-Boy's term. Its range page is titled Non-Rocking Wall Recliners.
  • Zero wall: Ashley's term, on the Nerviano and the Danum.
  • Space Saver: Best Home Furnishings' term, written as "Space Saver (wall-hugger)" on its recliners.
  • Wallhugger, one word: Palliser's spelling, on the Granada.
  • Wall saver and wall away: the names other makers and stores use for the same idea.

Does La-Z-Boy make wall hugger recliners?

Yes, and La-Z-Boy builds most of its chair names in more than one mechanism. Our Pinnacle, Trouper and Redwood listings each offer a Rocking Recliner and a Wall Recliner, with power versions of both. So the name alone settles nothing; the configuration on the order does. How we price and order La-Z-Boy has its own guide.

How close to the wall can a wall hugger recliner sit?

La-Z-Boy's range page says its wall recliners "can be placed 6" to 8" from the wall". Its model pages disagree with that range in both directions. Three of the chairs below say about 4 inches and five say about 7. For a given chair, the model page is the figure I'd plan around, so that is what the table prints.

Chair Gap behind Open length Wall to footrest Listed from
La-Z-Boy Kodie about 4 in 69 in 73 in $2,249.00
La-Z-Boy Sparrow about 4 in 64 in 68 in $1,099.00
La-Z-Boy Cade about 4 in 67.5 in 71.5 in $1,299.00
Ashley Nerviano 4 in 66 in 70 in $699.00
La-Z-Boy Vail about 7 in 63.5 in 70.5 in $599.00
La-Z-Boy Collage about 7 in 63.5 in 70.5 in $1,099.00
La-Z-Boy Pinnacle about 7 in 66 in 73 in $1,599.00
La-Z-Boy Jasper about 7 in 64 in 71 in $1,249.00
La-Z-Boy Redwood about 7 in 75.5 in 82.5 in $1,149.00
Jasper, rocking version about 12 in 64 in 76 in same listing

Open length is the maker's fully extended figure. Wall to footrest adds the gap to it, so treat it as a close estimate. Prices are as Merit listed them on 9 October 2026, before applicable taxes, for the lowest-priced cover.

Some of Merit's listings print a different width from the maker's. La-Z-Boy gives the Collage as 29.5 inches wide where our listing says 27.5. The Kodie and Sparrow are 33.5 by La-Z-Boy and 31.5 on our pages, the Jasper 40 against our 38, and the Redwood 44 against our 42. Ashley puts the Nerviano at 33.5 inches; our listing says 34. Plan around the maker's number.

How much space does a wall hugger recliner actually save?

A wall hugger saves a few inches behind the chair and nothing in front of it. The Jasper shows it cleanly, because La-Z-Boy builds it both ways. Both versions open to 64 inches. The wall version asks for about 7 inches behind it and the rocker about 12, so the wall hugger fits a spot about 5 inches shorter.

In front, a wall hugger grows the way any recliner does. Subtract each chair's upright depth from its open length and these chairs reach 25.5 to 30.5 inches further into the room when open. The Kodie and the Cade sit closest to the wall and still add 30.5 inches up front.

Wall to footrest, the chairs in the table need 68 to 82.5 inches open. A coffee table 60 inches from the wall would stop every one of them short. In a small room, that front measurement decides more than the gap behind.

Where a wall hugger earns its place is a room where the chair has to back onto a wall, with open floor in front of it. A den with the TV across the room fits that. So does a bedroom corner with nothing at the foot of the chair. Narrow recliners for small rooms, sorted by width, have their own guide.

Does zero wall mean zero gravity?

No. Zero wall is Ashley's name for how close the Nerviano can sit to a wall. Zero gravity is a recline position that raises the legs, a term makers mostly use on power chairs and massage chairs. La-Z-Boy's manual wall recliners describe 3 legrest positions and don't claim a zero gravity one.

The two can come in one chair. Our Cozzia Quantum listing gives a zero-gravity stretch and a 1 inch wall-hugging recline, at $16,549.00. Zero gravity on a massage chair is covered chair by chair in another guide.

Wall hugger reclining sofas and loveseats

Wall hugger reclining sofas and loveseats use the same forward slide on each reclining seat. Their makers publish fewer clearance figures than the chair pages do. La-Z-Boy's Pinnacle Wall Reclining Sofa page says only "Can be placed inches from a wall". It gives the sofa as 81.5 inches wide and 66.5 inches fully extended.

Three that Merit lists through Duncan:

For a sofa going against a tight wall, ask us to get the inch figure from the maker before the order goes in. A loveseat in front of a window is the one case where a few inches decide whether it opens at all.

When a wall hugger recliner is the wrong chair

A wall hugger can't rock. If the person it's for likes to rock while upright, a rocker recliner is the chair, with about 12 inches behind it on the Jasper.

The front of the room has to be clear. Every chair in the table needs at least 68 inches from wall to footrest. If a coffee table, a bed or a doorway sits closer than that, the chair won't open fully.

La-Z-Boy writes "approximately" before every gap. A thick baseboard or a heat register sits between the wall and the chair back, so measure from whatever sticks out furthest.

The manual versions open with a handle on the outside arm. For hands that struggle with a lever, La-Z-Boy builds most of these names as power wall recliners too; power or manual is weighed up in another guide.

Can I put a wall hugger recliner in an RV?

The chairs Merit carries are house furniture, and none of their listings mention travel use or a way to bolt them down. A chair riding in a moving coach needs a tie-down plan from the RV maker first. Ashley lists a 30 inch minimum doorway for getting the Nerviano in, so the coach door is the other number to check.

Measuring for a wall hugger before calling Duncan

One measurement answers most of it: the distance from the wall to the nearest thing in front of the chair's spot, set against the wall to footrest column above. If it's short, no gap behind will fix it.

Lead times from Merit's Duncan store: for La-Z-Boy chairs, ask what's in stock, and custom orders take 8 to 10 weeks. Ashley takes 4 to 6 weeks and Best Home Furnishings 8 to 10, then each is ready for pickup or delivery. Duncan delivers across the Island for $150, assembly included, and reaches some Gulf Islands, with details from the store. Our other stores set their own delivery terms, so ask the store.

Other recliner shapes each have a guide, and every chair in the recliner range lists its wall clearance where the maker gives it.
