A small recliner is a chair that fits three numbers in your room: its width, the gap it needs behind it, and its length with the footrest up. Width gets the attention. In a small room, the open length usually decides it. At Merit Home Furniture, the table further down has 25 recliners and lift chairs listed for our Duncan store with a published width of 33 inches or less. They run from the Island Living Nitinat at about 28 inches up to a group at 33.
The narrowest La-Z-Boy among our Island recliner listings is the Collage, 29.5 inches wide by La-Z-Boy's own spec, and its wall version sits about 7 inches from a wall. For a taller person in a narrow room, the Charlotte is 33 inches wide with a 22-inch seat depth, and it opens to only 57 inches. The widths, wall gaps and seat sizes are below, with prices as listed on 16 October 2026, before applicable taxes.
What is the best recliner for a small space?
The best recliner for a small space is the narrowest chair whose seat still fits the person in it, with a reclining action that suits the spot it goes in. Where the chair sits matters as much as its size. Four spots cover most small rooms, and each points to a different kind of chair.
- Backed against a wall: a wall recliner. The seat slides forward as the back goes down, so it needs a few inches behind it instead of a foot. La-Z-Boy puts the Collage, Vail and Pinnacle wall versions about 7 inches out. Best Home Furnishings calls the same idea a Space Saver.
- A coffee table close in front: a push-back chair with a short open length. The Charlotte opens to 57 inches and the Scarlett to 58, against 63.5 to 69 for the pop-up legrest chairs in the next table.
- Out in the room, turning to face a window or the TV: a swivel glider. The Palliser Banff is only 29.45 inches wide, but swivel gliders need far more room behind them than wall recliners do.
- For someone who needs help getting up: a power lift recliner in a small frame. The Aurora Small is 31 inches wide, the Billie 32 and the Jean 32.5.
If the chair is going against a wall and the person is on the small side, I'd start with the Collage wall recliner. If the person is tall and the room is narrow, I'd start with the Charlotte, because it gives a full-size seat on a 33-inch frame and stays short when open. Between them they cover a short wall and a tall sitter. The rest of this guide is the numbers behind those two picks.
How much space does a recliner need?
A recliner needs three measurements of floor: the gap behind it, its length when fully open, and the walking room past it. The first two are on the maker's spec. The third depends on where people walk in your room.
The gap behind changes most with the mechanism. La-Z-Boy's rocking recliner pages for the Vail, Collage and Kodie each say about 12 inches is needed to recline fully. Its wall recliners need about 7 inches (Collage, Vail, Pinnacle) or about 4 inches (Sparrow, Cade, Baron). Swivel gliders need much more: the Monarch power swivel glider listing gives 27 inches behind it, though the chair is only 29.5 inches wide.
Open length lives on the maker's spec sheet, not on the chair. Across the La-Z-Boy chairs with a pop-up legrest in this guide, the fully open length runs from 23.5 to 30.5 inches more than the upright depth. Add the gap behind, and you have the floor the chair takes from the wall to the end of the footrest.
| Chair and version | Gap behind | Wall to footrest |
|---|---|---|
| Sparrow wall recliner | about 4 in. | 68 in. |
| Collage wall recliner | about 7 in. | 70.5 in. |
| Vail wall recliner | about 7 in. | 70.5 in. |
| Cade wall recliner | about 4 in. | 71.5 in. |
| Pinnacle wall recliner | about 7 in. | 73 in. |
| Collage rocker | about 12 in. | 75.5 in. |
| Kodie rocker | about 12 in. | 81 in. |
| Monarch swivel glider | 27 in. | 90 in. |
Wall to footrest is the gap plus the fully open length (63.5 inches for the Collage and Vail, 64 for the Sparrow, 66 for the Pinnacle, 67.5 for the Errington). Figures are from La-Z-Boy's product pages and, for the Monarch, its Merit listing. The Sparrow and Cade are 33.5 inches wide, so they trade a little width for the smallest gap.
Here's how that plays out. Say the edge of a coffee table is 7 feet (84 inches) from the wall. The Collage wall recliner, fully open, leaves 13.5 inches before the table. The Kodie rocker leaves 3. The same Collage built as a rocker leaves 8.5, so on this one chair the mechanism alone moves the footrest 5 inches.
Push-back chairs are harder to plan on paper. La-Z-Boy gives the Charlotte's open length (57 inches) and the Ferndale's (48.5 inches), but no gap behind for either. A push-back tilts as you lean into it, so ask us for that chair's clearance before it goes near a wall.
What size is the smallest recliner?
The narrowest recliner on our site is the Ashley Elvio, 27 inches wide. It is carried at our Port Alberni store, call for our best price. Its listing says it needs 17 inches behind it and opens to 61. Among chairs listed for Duncan, the narrowest is the Island Living Nitinat, at about 28 inches. After that come the Palliser Banff at 29.45 and the Collage at 29.5.
Narrow is one way to be small, and length is the other. The Ferndale has the shortest open length of anything here, 48.5 inches, because its back reclines and La-Z-Boy sells a matching ottoman for the feet. A room with a short wall and a room with a short run to the table need different chairs.

Every chair below has a published width of 33 inches or less and lists Duncan as a store that carries or orders it. Prices are as listed on 16 October 2026, before applicable taxes, and the lowest cover price is shown. Island Living shows no prices online, so its two chairs are a call to Duncan.

Where our product page and La-Z-Boy's own spec disagree on width, the table prints La-Z-Boy's figure, which is the wider one in every case we found. The Lennon is the one La-Z-Boy no longer shows online; its published spec gave 32.5 inches, and our page says 30.5, so we print 32.5 until it's checked. The Island Living listings give approximate sizes, which is why the Nitinat and Ucluelet read "about".
A few chairs sit just over the line and are still worth a look in a tight room. The Sparrow is 33.5 inches wide but needs only about 4 inches behind it as a wall recliner. The Kodie is also 33.5 wide, and La-Z-Boy calls it large scale; it's in this guide for its seat, not its size. The Liam and Rowan are 34 inches wide by La-Z-Boy's spec.
Seat size: when a small recliner is too small
A small recliner usually comes with a small seat, and the price tag won't tell you. The Collage seat is 18 inches deep and 18.5 high. The Charlotte, only 3.5 inches wider overall, has a seat 22 inches deep. For a short person the Collage seat lets the feet reach the floor. For a tall person it leaves the thighs hanging off the front edge.
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) wrote its seat checks for office chairs, and two of them carry over to a recliner sat in upright. First, the top of the seat sits just under the kneecap. Second, the gap from the seat's front edge to the calves takes a clenched fist, which CCOHS puts at about 5 cm or 2 inches. With a tape measure and a kitchen chair, both are easy to check at home before choosing between a petite seat and a full-size one.
| Chair | Seat depth | Seat height |
|---|---|---|
| Collage | 18 in. | 18.5 in. |
| Ingall | 18.5 in. | 19 in. |
| Vail | 19.5 in. | 18 in. |
| Sondra | 19.5 in. | 17.5 in. |
| Ferndale | 20 in. | 20 in. |
| Billie | 21 in. | 19 in. |
| Scarlett | 21 in. | 19.5 in. |
| Pinnacle | 21.5 in. | 18.5 in. |
| Charlotte | 22 in. | 19.5 in. |
| Kodie | 22 in. | 22 in. |
La-Z-Boy figures for its chairs, our listings for the Ingall and Sondra. The Sondra listing calls it a smaller scaled chair for petite people, and its 17.5-inch seat height is the lowest here. Two makers go further and print a height range on the listing. Best Home Furnishings recommends the Sondra lift for people up to 5 ft 7 in. and the Mexi lift for 5 ft 6 in. to 6 ft 3 in. UltraComfort makes the Aurora in three sizes, and the Small, for people under 5 ft 3 in., is 31 inches wide and needs 15 inches from the wall. For the tall end, the chair-by-chair guide for taller people covers back height and legrest length.
For an older parent, the height of the seat and the push needed to stand up matter more than the width. Five chairs in the table lift the whole seat to help a person stand: the Aurora, the Billie, the Jean, the Mexi and the Sondra power lift. Merit's page on recliners for an older parent in a small room covers seat height and when a lift chair makes sense. For any mobility question, ask a doctor or occupational therapist.
Width is half the problem. The other half is what the chair does when it opens. Give us the wall length and how far the coffee table sits from that wall, and we can narrow 25 chairs to two or three over the phone.
Getting a small recliner through the door and into the room
A small recliner goes through a door on its narrowest side. For every chair in the Duncan table, width is the smallest of the three box measurements, so a 29.5-inch Collage is among the easiest to carry in. The door width, the hallway and any stair turn are worth measuring before the chair is ordered, and a basement suite with a tight landing deserves a second check.
A small chair costs the same to bring home as a big one: $150 across the Island, assembly included, when it ships from Merit's Duncan store. For a Gulf Islands address, the Duncan store can say whether we reach your island, and collecting the chair at Ingram Street costs nothing. Buying through Campbell River or Port Alberni, that store quotes its own delivery.
How long it takes depends on the maker. Merit's current lead times run to the point where the chair is ready for pickup or delivery:
- La-Z-Boy chairs: ask what's in stock; a custom order takes 8 to 10 weeks.
- Best Home Furnishings (Calli, Sondra, Ingall, Cannes): 8 to 10 weeks.
- Island Living: 2 to 3 weeks when Island Living has the chair in stock in Vancouver, 6 to 8 weeks when it is made to order.
- Palliser, UltraComfort, Monarch and Ashley: ask us for the current lead time.
A small chair ordered specially, in a cover or size the store doesn't keep, carries a 24% deposit like any other special order.
Where small recliners go wrong in small rooms
Buying narrow and shallow for a tall person. An 18-inch seat leaves a six-footer sitting on the front edge. The Charlotte or Kodie seat suits that room better.
Measuring the chair closed. The upright depth is printed everywhere, but a legrest chair needs another 23.5 to 30.5 inches when open. In a small room, that is the number to check against the coffee table.
Putting a rocker or swivel glider against a wall. A rocker needs about 12 inches behind it, and the Monarch swivel glider needs 27. Narrow rockers still rock, and in a tight corner they tap the wall. A wall recliner is the right mechanism there, and our guide to the distance from the wall explains how it slides forward instead.
Forgetting the outlet. Power recliners and lift chairs plug in; La-Z-Boy's Billie page says it plugs into an AC outlet, with battery backup for a power failure. In a small room the outlet may decide which wall the chair goes on.
Trusting one width. We found La-Z-Boy's own figures running 2 inches wider than our listings on several chairs. When an inch matters, ask us to check the maker's current spec before ordering.

Choosing a small recliner with the Duncan store
The quickest start is a phone call with three numbers: the door width, the wall length, and how far the table or TV stand sits from the wall. We'll tell you which chairs on this list fit, and what is set up to sit in at our Duncan showroom at 107 Ingram Street before you drive down. For the Elvio, call Port Alberni at (250) 724-6644.
