Lift chairs that fit the person using them

A lift chair is a power recliner with a motor-driven frame underneath that raises the chair and tilts it forward, bringing the seat up under the person as they stand. On the 12 lift chair listings that give a seat height, the seat sits 18 to 22 inches off the floor, and that spread is why sizing comes first. The guides below explain how the lift works, sizing, the BC tax rules, and what to measure when that person can't come in.

Questions Islanders ask

Short answers, and the guide behind each

What is the difference between a lift chair and a recliner?

The lift. On a power recliner, a motor works the back and footrest, but the seat never rises, so getting up is left to the sitter's legs and arms. A lift chair does all of that and also pushes the seat up and forward, which adds to the price. It suits someone for whom standing up has become the hard part of the day. The mechanism is explained in how a lift chair works.

Can I buy a lift chair for my parent without them sitting in it first?

Yes, with the right numbers. Height and weight get most of the way, and the deciding number is floor to the back of the knee, seated in a firm chair, in their usual shoes. By UltraComfort's sizing advice, a chair that's the wrong size either way makes a fall getting in or out more likely. What to measure at home is in measuring a parent for a lift chair.

Take your time. Nobody is going to follow you around the showroom. Sit in a few, measure at home, and come back when you are ready. From our Duncan store, delivery across the Island is $150 with assembly included. A mattress going across the Island may need a different shipping method.
