A reclining loveseat is a two-seat frame in which each seat reclines on its own. The first choice is the console: a box with cup holders and storage that sits between the two seats. That box costs width. On La-Z-Boy's Trouper, the plain loveseat is 62 inches across and the console version is 77 inches, a gap of 15 inches.
Merit Home Furniture lists both kinds for Vancouver Island buyers among its reclining furniture for the Island, and our Duncan store orders them. Without a console, two people sit close and the piece fits a shorter wall. With one, each person gets an armrest, a cup holder and a hidden bin, and the couple sits further apart.
The widths and prices below were read from our product pages on October 16, 2026, and every price is before applicable taxes. The warranty terms come from the makers. The clearance figures come from the makers and from our own spec tables.
Reclining loveseat with a console or without: what changes?
Adding a console to a reclining loveseat changes the width and almost nothing else. La-Z-Boy publishes the Trouper both ways, so the two versions can be compared line by line on the maker's own pages.
| Trouper, per La-Z-Boy | No console | Console |
|---|---|---|
| Overall width | 62 in | 77 in |
| Seat width | 44.5 in | 59.5 in |
| Depth, upright | 42 in | 42 in |
| Depth, fully extended | 65 in | 65 in |
| Weight | 174 lb | 200 lb |
The seat width grows by the same 15 inches as the frame. That suggests La-Z-Boy measures seat width between the outside arms, with the console counted inside it. Each person's own cushion stays about the same size either way. The console also adds 26 pounds to the carry.
Depth does not move. Both versions reach the same 65 inches with the footrests up, so the console asks for wall length, not floor in front.
With a console
Suits two people who each want their own armrest, a drink within reach and somewhere to keep remotes. It also suits a couple who move at different times, because the box keeps one person's shifting from bumping the other. It needs about 75 to 80 inches of wall.
Without a console
Suits a couple who sit close, a room with a short wall, or a home where a child or a dog climbs into the middle. Going by the plain pieces below, it needs 49.5 to 70 inches of wall. Shoulders touch when both seats are back.
Console and plain reclining loveseats we list, measured
These are the Merit reclining loveseats whose product pages say plainly whether a console is part of the piece. Every one of them can be ordered through Duncan.
| Loveseat | Console | Width | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monarch 2-seat power, grey or beige | No | 49.5 in | $1,499 grey or beige |
| Tulen (Ashley) | No | 63 in | $1,399 |
| Josey (Best) | No | 64.5 in | $3,399 |
| Alphons (Ashley) | No | 70 in | By colour |
| Barnsana (Ashley) | Yes | 75 in | $1,799 |
| Lavenhorne (Ashley) | Yes | 77 in | By colour |
| Hastings (Palliser) | Yes | 77 in | $5,299 |
| Frohn (Ashley) | Yes | 80 in | By colour |
Three Ashley loveseats are priced by colour on their pages, so the colour decides the figure.
The Monarch and the Josey are both on display at our Duncan store, according to their pages. Displays change, so a call ahead tells you what is set up that day.
The Monarch is the narrow one at 49.5 inches, with a 600 lb weight capacity on its page. The Josey is a power space saver, rated for 275 lb per seat. The Hastings has the lowest seat in the group at 16.46 inches, which matters to anyone who finds standing up hard.
La-Z-Boy reclining loveseats: seat sizes and prices
La-Z-Boy builds each reclining loveseat to order, and the console is one choice on the order. Every La-Z-Boy page on the Merit site lists its configurations: manual or power, console or none, power headrest, power lumbar. Our Duncan store orders 21 La-Z-Boy reclining loveseats. Sixteen show a price, and five are priced by phone. La-Z-Boy sofas and loveseats take 8 to 10 weeks, ready for pickup or delivery.
| Model | Seat depth | Seat height | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brooks | 21 in | 21.5 in | $1,299 |
| Jay | 23 in | 20.5 in | $1,399 |
| Morrison | 21.5 in | 20.5 in | $1,399 |
| Joel | 21.5 in | 21.5 in | $1,449 |
| James | 21 in | 20.5 in | $1,599 |
| Liam (wall) | 21 in | 20 in | $1,599 |
| Pinnacle (wall) | 20 in | 20 in | $1,649 |
| Ava | 22.5 in | 21.5 in | $1,699 |
| Emmons | 23 in | 22 in | $1,699 |
| Apollo | 22 in | 21 in | $1,749 |
| Finley (wall) | 21.5 in | 19.5 in | $1,849 |
| Greyson | 21.5 in | 21 in | $1,849 |
| Bennett | 22.5 in | 21 in | $2,449 |
| Colby | 21 in | 21.5 in | $2,449 |
| Dorian | 21.5 in | 20.5 in | $4,699 |
| Trouper | 20.5 in | 20.5 in | $5,149 |
The five priced by phone are the Hawthorn, Lennon, Maverick, Robin and Rowan.
Each of our La-Z-Boy pages gives one overall width and does not say which configuration it was measured on. The Brooks page reads 63 inches and the James page 79, and the Trouper example above shows why the two can differ. Before an order is written, the width of the exact version is the number to confirm.
Seat depth runs from 20 to 23 inches across these sixteen. The shorter of two people sets the limit, since a seat that is too deep leaves their feet off the floor. Our guide to seat depth, height and width works through how those numbers feel.
The Liam, Pinnacle and Finley are wall models, which La-Z-Boy says can sit inches from a wall. The Lennon, Rowan and Maverick pages say the same.
What is the best brand for loveseat recliners?
The best brand for a reclining loveseat is the one whose warranty, lead time and seat sizes fit the two people buying it. There is no single winner. The makers Merit carries publish very different terms on the parts that wear out.
| Maker | Mechanism | Power parts | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| La-Z-Boy | Lifetime parts, 1 year labour | 3 years parts | 8 to 10 weeks |
| Ashley | 1 year on our pages; Ashley lists 5 years | 1 year | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Monarch | 1 year limited, whole piece | 1 year limited | Ask us |
For a couple who want to choose the console, the cover and the seat height, La-Z-Boy gives the most to choose from. Its warranty on the reclining mechanism is the longest here, and labour is covered for the first year. For a lower price and a shorter wait, Ashley takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Merit's Ashley product pages list a one-year warranty. Ashley's own warranty page lists a 5 year limited warranty on recliner mechanisms and a limited lifetime warranty on motion frames. It covers labour and shipping only in the first year. I would plan on the one year and treat the rest as Ashley's to honour.
People also ask which reclining loveseat is best in Canada. On the Island, the useful question is who fixes it. Merit backs the maker's warranty, orders the parts and does the repairs. SmartOne from Zucora is our extended plan, at 5 years, and a reclining loveseat qualifies like anything else we sell.
How much space does a reclining loveseat need behind and in front?
A reclining loveseat needs room on two sides: behind it for the backs to tip, and in front for the footrests. The console never changes either figure.
| Loveseat | Upright depth | Fully reclined |
|---|---|---|
| Trouper (La-Z-Boy) | 42 in | 65 in |
| Monarch 2-seat power | 35.5 in | 63 in |
| Hastings (Palliser) | 40.5 in | 68 in |
Out front, a reclining loveseat grows by 23 to 27.5 inches on these three. A coffee table has to sit beyond that reach, or one of you ends up stepping over it.
Behind, the answer depends on the mechanism. The Monarch page asks for 27 inches of wall clearance to recline fully. La-Z-Boy says its wall recliners can be placed 6 to 8 inches from the wall, because the seat slides forward as it opens. The Josey is Best's version of the same idea, which it calls a space saver.
Power models also need an outlet within reach of the cord. La-Z-Boy's power loveseats plug into an AC outlet, and the Pinnacle page lists an optional battery pack.
Power or manual on a two-seat recliner
A power or manual reclining loveseat gives each seat its own controls, so neither person moves the other. On the La-Z-Boy Greyson, James and Trouper in their manual versions, each back is released by a latch on its outside arm. The Ashley Tulen, Alphons, Frohn and Lavenhorne recline with a pull tab.
Power versions move with buttons instead. The Brooks has a side panel on each seat, with one toggle for recline, two for the headrest and lumbar, and a home button. The Josey uses a Comfort Dial with a USB port.
If one of you struggles with a lever, power removes the problem for that seat alone. A latch or tab still takes a firm pull, and on a console loveseat nobody can reach across to help.
My test for a reclining loveseat takes two people. Both sit in it together, recline at the same time, and see whether they still fit with the footrests up. Shoulders pressed together with no console is the sign to try the console version, or to look at a three-seat sofa.
What are the disadvantages of a recliner loveseat?
The main disadvantage of a recliner loveseat is that one frame has to suit two bodies. Both seats share the same depth and height, so a tall partner and a short partner sit in the same geometry.
- A console stops anyone from lying across both seats or sitting close. A plain one leaves no armrest between you.
- Neither version seats three. For a third person, our page on reclining sofas covers the next size up.
- The footrests need clear floor, and a standard back needs room behind it.
- Power seats need an outlet, and a cord across the floor if the outlet is on another wall.
- Moving parts and children do not mix. Ashley's warranty page warns that children should not play on or operate motion furniture. It also says recliners should be left upright and closed.
Consoles with lights or charging ports carry wiring. In 2023, Health Canada posted a recall of 9,467 Ashley Party Time power loveseats, sofas and recliners sold in Canada. The LED in the cup holder could overheat, and the recall covers pieces sold from November 2018 to March 2023. A second-hand power loveseat is worth checking on the Health Canada recalls site before it comes home.
A reclining loveseat is wrong for anyone who naps lying down on the couch, and for a room where it would block a walkway once reclined.
