No, La-Z-Boy is not made in Canada. Its own American Heritage page lists three plants in the United States and three in Mexico, and not one in Canada.
At Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island, the recliners whose listings say "Made in Canada" all come from one maker. Decor-Rest of Woodbridge, Ontario builds two reclining chairs and three reclining sofas that we can order through Duncan. Palliser, the name many Canadians expect here, says its products are manufactured in Mexico.
A Canadian-made recliner, for this guide, is one whose maker or listing says so in writing. Below is each maker behind the recliners on Merit's Island site, in its own words, with prices read on October 9, 2026.
Is La-Z-Boy made in Canada, and where are its recliners built?
La-Z-Boy recliners are built in the United States and Mexico. The company names Monroe, Michigan as its world headquarters. The American plants are in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Neosho, Missouri and Dayton, Tennessee. The Mexican ones are Mayne Arizpe, San Luis Rio Colorado and Torreón.
The history is American too. La-Z-Boy says its very first recliner "was designed in a garage and crafted out of orange crates." The company still describes its furniture as designed and engineered in America.
Merit's recliner collection lists 57 La-Z-Boy recliners. Only one listing carries La-Z-Boy's own origin line, the Reed, which reads "Handcrafted in the U.S.A. with U.S. and imported parts." For the other 56 I go by the plant list rather than guess chair by chair. That makes La-Z-Boy American-built, and it does not change whether its recliners are worth the money.
Which Canadian company makes recliners we can order?
Decor-Rest is the Canadian company whose recliners we can order with a written origin. It calls itself "a leading Canadian manufacturer of fine upholstery." Its base is 511 Chrislea Road in Woodbridge, Ontario, and its timeline starts with incorporation in 1972. By its own count, more than 350 craftspeople and administrators work there.
Reclining furniture is newer ground for Decor-Rest. Its vision statement says it is "expanding our fashion-forward design aesthetic into new categories like motion and dining furniture." Motion is the trade word for anything with a reclining mechanism.
Four Decor-Rest listings on our site carry the "Canadian Made" tag and a spec row reading "Made in: Canada" beside the style "Reclining". They are the 2450 Chair, the 2220 Chair, the M8508P Sofa, the M8508PH Sofa and the M8508PHL Sofa. All five are orderable through Duncan. The rest of the maker's range, and how it builds, is in our write-up on Decor-Rest's Woodbridge upholstery.
Decor-Rest recliners made in Canada: prices and sizes
| Piece | Price | W x D x H (in.) | Seat height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2450 Chair | $1,299.00 fabric, $1,949.00 leather | 36 x 36 x 41 | 19 in. |
| 2220 Chair | $1,599.00 | 31 x 36 x 42 | 20 in. |
| M8508P Sofa | $3,049.00 | 83 x 40 x 43 | 18 in. |
| M8508PH Sofa | $3,599.00 | 83 x 40 x 43 | 18 in. |
| M8508PHL Sofa | Call for our best price | 83 x 40 x 43 | 18 in. |
Prices are before applicable taxes. Every one comes in fabric or leather, and the cover chosen moves the price up or down. Both chairs list sinuous spring seats with 1.9 lb seat foam.
Two other Decor-Rest motion pieces we carry have no "Made in" row and no Canadian Made tag. One is the 7612 Push Back Recliner, carried at our Port Alberni store, call for our best price. The other is the M38500P leather power reclining sofa, carried at our Campbell River store, call for our best price. Until a listing states where a piece was built, we do not call it Canadian-made. Either store can ask Decor-Rest.
Is Palliser made in Canada?
Palliser is a Canadian company, but its furniture is not made in Canada. Its own FAQ answers the question in one line: "Our products are manufactured in our three production facilities across Mexico to best serve our North American customers."
The roots are in Manitoba. Palliser's timeline says the family business started in 1944, using a small chicken barn in rural Manitoba as its first production facility. The same timeline records operations opening in Saltillo and Las Colinas, Mexico. Palliser Furniture Ltd. is registered at 70 Lexington Park, Winnipeg.
We list 15 Palliser pieces, and five reclining ones are on display at our Duncan store. A sixth, the Hastings console loveseat at $5,299.00, is listed for Duncan too. The Banff manual swivel glider is $2,449.00. The Granada power wall hugger is $2,499.00. The Prodigy II is $2,949.00 and the narrower Prodigy is $3,399.00. The Hastings reclining sofa is $5,049.00.
Buying Palliser means buying from a Canadian-owned company with Mexican plants. For some buyers that is close enough. For anyone who wants the recliner itself built here, Palliser does not meet that test by its own account.
Where each recliner maker on our site says it builds
| Maker | Recliner listings | Origin, in the maker's or listing's words |
|---|---|---|
| La-Z-Boy | 57 | Plants in the United States and Mexico |
| Ashley | 41 | No listing tagged Canadian Made |
| Best Home Furnishings | 34 | No listing tagged Canadian Made |
| Palliser | 9 | Three facilities across Mexico |
| Island Living | 2 | In-stock pieces "made overseas for Island Living" |
| Decor-Rest | 1 | The 7612, with no Made in row |
| Six other makers | 28 | No listing tagged Canadian Made |
That covers all 172 pieces in our recliners collection, and not one carries the Canadian Made tag. The five Canadian-made Decor-Rest pieces sit outside it, listed as chairs and sofas. The two Island Living recliners, the Nitinat and the Ucluelet, come from Island Living's in-stock range rather than its Burnaby workshop.
Our Canadian-made collection holds 324 listings, and 186 of them are Mako. A provincial news release calls Mako "a furniture producer in Surrey". Mako's pieces at Merit are wood furniture, and none of them reclines.
What "Made in Canada" has to mean on a recliner
The Competition Bureau sets the test for a Canadian origin claim. It will generally not challenge "Made in Canada" when at least 51% of the direct costs were incurred in Canada. The last substantial transformation must also happen here, and the claim needs a qualifier.
The Bureau's sample qualifier is "Made in Canada with imported parts". A recliner can be framed, sprung and upholstered in Ontario around a mechanism made elsewhere, so that qualifier matters. "Product of Canada" is stricter, needing at least 98% of the direct costs incurred in Canada.
None of our Decor-Rest listings spells out a qualifier, and we can check the maker's label when the exact wording matters. More on reading an origin label before you pay is in its own guide. The wider list of Canadian makers we stock on the Island has one too.
Best quality recliners in Canada: what the warranties say
Quality in a recliner shows up in the frame, the springs and the mechanism. Each maker's warranty is the plainest written evidence of how long those parts should last.
| Part | Decor-Rest | La-Z-Boy | Palliser |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame | Lifetime limited, parts only after year one | Lifetime parts, 1 year labour | 10 years on mixed wood frames |
| Reclining mechanism | 3 years, parts only in years 2 and 3 | Lifetime parts, 1 year labour | Ask us |
| Motors and electronics | 1 year | 3 years parts | Ask us |
On paper, La-Z-Boy's mechanism terms run longer than Decor-Rest's. The Canadian-made option wins on origin, not on warranty length. Palliser publishes its frame term, and we can get its mechanism terms for a given model.
If a covered part fails, Merit orders the replacement from the maker and handles the repair. For cover past that, we sell SmartOne from Zucora. It runs 5 years and works on anything we carry, recliners included.
Where a Canadian-made recliner falls short
The choice is narrow. Five listings, two of them chairs, make up the whole Canadian-made reclining range we can document. None is a lift chair, a swivel glider or a listed wall hugger, so those needs point to an imported chair.
Decor-Rest builds each piece to order, which means 8 to 10 weeks before the chair can be picked up or delivered. Placing that special order means putting 24% down as a deposit.
The covers are chosen from samples, not from a finished chair. For a leather cover, it helps to read up on leather versus leather match first. Price is the one place the Canadian option does not lose. The fabric 2450 sits below $1,449.00, the middle price of the 47 priced La-Z-Boy recliners listed for our Duncan store.
Ordering a Canadian-made recliner through Duncan
The Merit floor in Duncan holds display models, and most sales there are custom orders. A call first tells you which Decor-Rest or Palliser pieces are set up that week.
For a recliner bought through Duncan, we charge $150 across the Island, with the chair assembled in the room. Delivery to some Gulf Islands is available too. Call the Duncan store for details. Picking it up from the Duncan store is free. Our stores in Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni set delivery separately, and each will price its own. The recliner guides and Canadian-made guides each have a page.
