Canadian-made furniture is furniture built in a Canadian factory, where the last major stage of its manufacture took place. A "Made in Canada" claim asks for more: at least 51% of total direct costs incurred in Canada, and a qualifier such as "with imported parts".
At Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island, 159 of the 2,443 products we list are furniture whose maker says it builds in Canada. Decor-Rest builds upholstery in Woodbridge, Ontario, and Island Living builds its made-to-order sofas, chairs and beds in Burnaby, BC. Beaudoin, a Quebec bed maker, is Canadian-made on our word as owners, and 17 Beaudoin pieces carry our Canadian Made tag. Our pages also list Mako Wood Furniture as Canadian-made, but Mako's own site doesn't say where it builds.
Ashley and La-Z-Boy are not Canadian-made, and neither are the in-stock Island Living pieces. Even counting Mako and Beaudoin, fewer than one listing in six is furniture made in a Canadian factory. The Canadian-built sofas cost more than most of our imported ones, and a made-to-order piece takes longer to arrive than one in stock.
What brand of furniture is made in Canada? The makers Merit carries
Two furniture makers we carry say they build in Canada: Decor-Rest, and Island Living for its made-to-order line. A third, Beaudoin in Quebec, is Canadian-made by our own confirmation. Our product pages also list Mako as Canadian-made, and the Mako paragraph below sets out what is on record. Island Living's Burnaby factory and Mako's Surrey office are a ferry ride away, in the Lower Mainland.
Decor-Rest builds sofas, sectionals, chairs, loveseats and ottomans in Woodbridge, Ontario, in the Toronto area. The Marzilli family started the company in Toronto in 1972. Its history page describes a 250,000 square foot base in Woodbridge and more than 350 craftspeople and administrators. Frames are air- or kiln-dried North American maple or birch, by Decor-Rest's construction page. Every Decor-Rest page on our site reads "Made in: Canada".
Island Living was established in 1959 and employs more than 180 people, by its own company profile. Island Living builds sofas to order in Burnaby, in a fabric picked from the more than 400 it keeps in stock. Its in-stock pieces are a separate program, made overseas for Island Living.
Mako Wood Furniture, a Surrey, BC solid wood furniture company, makes beds, dressers, chests, nightstands, armoires and bookcases, plus a few desks. Its site lists the Surrey address as its office, sorts its collections into alder, pine and maple, and says it is celebrating 20 years. It doesn't say where the furniture is built. Most Mako pages on our site, 186 of 210, carry a spec row reading "Made in | Canada (Surrey, BC)", taken from our own product data. In an April 2026 release about a new Mako facility in Merritt, the Province of BC calls Mako "a furniture producer in Surrey". Rubeena and I call Mako suites buy-it-once furniture, solid wood with no veneer, MDF or particle board, and Mako's solid wood bedroom pieces have a guide of their own.
Beaudoin makes the bed side of our Canadian list: metal bed frames, platform beds, upholstered headboards and a footboard. We confirmed it as Canadian-made on October 10, 2026, and those 17 pages now read "Made in: Canada (Quebec)". The Beaudoin Quest 2.5 adjustable base stays off the list, because its own page says Ergomotion makes it for Beaudoin.
Canadian-made furniture at Merit, by maker, count and price
These counts and prices come from our live product pages on October 16, 2026, and the prices are before applicable taxes. Thirteen Decor-Rest pieces listed for Duncan show no price online and are quoted in the store. Another 11 are carried only at Campbell River or Port Alberni, so call that store for our best price. Beaudoin is listed by store too. Of its 17 tagged pieces, 16 are listed for Port Alberni and one for Campbell River. The Beaudoin 961G metal frame is also listed for Duncan.
| Maker, where it builds | Pieces | Prices |
|---|---|---|
| Decor-Rest Furniture, Woodbridge, Ontario | 123 | $599 to $4,249 for those listed for Duncan |
| Island Living made to order, Burnaby, BC | 36 | Quoted in store |
| Beaudoin, Quebec, confirmed by our owners | 17 | Call the store its page lists for our best price |
| Mako Wood Furniture, Surrey, BC, by the Province's description | 210 | $349 to $3,449 for those listed for Duncan |
| Island Living in-stock, made overseas for Island Living | 44 | Quoted in store |
| Ashley, US and Asian plants | 648 | Not Canadian-made |
| La-Z-Boy, United States and Mexico plants | 162 | Not Canadian-made |
The Canadian-made collection on our site puts the Decor-Rest, made-to-order Island Living, Beaudoin and Mako pieces on one page, 324 in all. It also holds the Restwell mattresses and bases, covered further down. The Decor-Rest 2003 sofa in the photo is $1,549 in fabric and $2,899 in leather.
Island Living made to order or Island Living in-stock: which one is built in Canada?
Only the made-to-order Island Living pieces are built in Canada. They are made in Burnaby after the frame and fabric are chosen. The in-stock pieces come from Island Living's offshore division, and our product pages say they are made overseas for Island Living.
Island Living made to order, Burnaby
Each piece is built after it is ordered, in a fabric of your choosing. The frame is kiln-dried solid wood, 1 1/8 inches thick, and seat foam runs 2.0 to 2.75 lb density. Island Living says orders generally ship in four to six weeks when the fabric is in stock.
Island Living in-stock, made overseas
Ready-made in the covers shown, with less choice than the Burnaby side offers. Like every Island Living piece, it is priced by quote. The frame is kiln-dried hardwood lumber and plywood, and seat foam runs 1.8 to 2.25 lb density.
On our site the two kinds are easy to tell apart. A made-to-order page says the piece is made to order in the fabric you choose, and an in-stock page says it is made overseas for Island Living. Every Island Living piece on our site, both kinds, sits in one collection.
Made to order means your fabric and your choice of pieces, at the sizes Island Living sets. Its FAQ says the one thing Island Living won't change is a piece's physical dimensions.
What do "Made in Canada" and "Product of Canada" mean on furniture?
"Product of Canada" and "Made in Canada" are two separate claims, and the Competition Bureau's guidelines set a test for each. Both need the last substantial transformation of the product to happen in Canada. The Bureau defines that as "a fundamental change in form, appearance or nature" that leaves a new product. It gives no furniture example, but on a sofa the framing and upholstering are the obvious candidates.
The cost test is where the two claims split. Direct costs are the materials and the labour of making the piece, and can include production overhead that is reasonably assigned to it.
| Claim | What it means |
|---|---|
| Product of Canada | At least 98% of total direct costs spent in Canada, and the last substantial transformation done here. Almost the whole cost of making it, parts and labour, stayed in Canada. |
| Made in Canada | At least 51% of total direct costs spent in Canada, the last substantial transformation done here, and a qualifier such as "with imported parts". Up to 49% of the direct cost can be spent elsewhere. |
| Designed in Canada, Assembled in Canada | No cost share set. The claim says one step happened in Canada, and nothing more. |
| Maple leaf, Canadian flag, red and white colours | Depending on context, a symbol can carry as much weight as a written claim. On its own it proves nothing until the words beside it are read. |
Two more points from the Bureau change how a showroom reads. By its guidelines, the three Acts behind them, the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act and the Textile Labelling Act, don't require a country of origin claim. Its consumer page also warns shoppers against taking red colours or a maple leaf as proof that something is Canadian.
On our product pages, a "Made in: Canada" line is meant to say where the piece is built, not to claim Product of Canada. Decor-Rest, for one, says it upholsters with fabrics from around the world.
How to check where a piece of furniture was made
Checking where furniture was made starts with the label, but the label is rarely the whole answer. These are the checks I'd run on any piece, ours included.
- Read the exact words. "Product of Canada", "Made in Canada with imported parts" and "Designed in Canada" are three different promises, as the table above shows.
- Look for a maker and a town. A label or product page that names the maker and the plant town can be checked against the maker's own site. A flag on a swing tag can't.
- Ask what came from elsewhere. Fabric, leather, recliner mechanisms and hardware can be imported even when the frame is built here.
- Separate the company from the factory. Where a company is headquartered says nothing about where a given sofa was built.
- Ask the store, then the maker. The Bureau's consumer advice is to ask the manufacturer or the retailer when a claim is unclear. Ask us and we'll tell you, or find out.
- Report a claim that looks false. The Competition Bureau takes complaints about misleading origin claims through a form on its website.
Does a Canadian-owned store sell Canadian-made furniture?
Not necessarily, because ownership and origin are separate questions. A chain can be Canadian-owned and listed on a Canadian exchange while most of its sofas come from overseas. A store owned abroad can still carry Canadian lines.
Who owns a store says nothing about where a given sofa on its floor was built, and the same test applies to us. Merit is an Island family business, and most of the furniture we list is imported. The answer is on the label and with the maker.
Which Canadian-made couches suit a smaller Island home?
Island homes include a lot of odd-shaped character houses, cabins and small condos, and the made-to-order Island Living frames are the flexible Canadian-made couches for those. Most made-to-order Island Living sofas on our site also come in an apartment size. For a bigger room, many list one-arm, armless, corner or chaise pieces for building a sectional.
The Island Living Carmanah shows the range. It comes as a 56 inch loveseat, a 71 inch apartment sofa, a 79 inch sofa and a 102 inch four-seat sofa. The sectional side of the Canadian-made range has a guide of its own.
Decor-Rest offers its frames in hundreds of fabrics and leathers, by its own count. The 2003 sofa is 84 inches wide with a 21 inch seat depth. Seven Decor-Rest pieces on our site recline, including the Decor-Rest M8508PH sofa, and recliners made in Canada get their own page. Both makers are compared in the Canadian-made sofa guide.
The sofa mistake Rubeena and I see is an unmeasured doorway or elevator. A set-size frame can't be shortened once it's built, so the entrance matters as much as the room.
Who handles a warranty claim on a Canadian-made sofa?
A warranty claim on anything we sell starts with a call to us. Merit backs the manufacturer's warranty: we order the parts and look after the repair. Decor-Rest's written warranty covers frames and springs for the product's normal useful life, with parts only after the first year, and fabric for one year. Island Living covers made-to-order frames, springs and seat foam for a pro-rated lifetime, which it sets at 25 years, and fabric for one year. Mako's site doesn't publish warranty terms, so ask us for them before ordering.
Warranties don't cover accidental stains, rips, tears, cuts or burns. Our extended option, SmartOne from Zucora, runs up to five years from purchase and sends someone to the house for the repair.
The Canadian upholstery lines, Island Living and Decor-Rest, hold up for more than ten years in my experience. A $1,000 sofa is worth $1,000 and a $2,000 sofa is worth $2,000, and they aren't apples to apples. For someone who likes to change the look of a room every few years, a lower-priced sofa can be the better value.
Canadian-made bedroom furniture and mattresses at Merit
For bedroom furniture, our pages list two lines as Canadian-made. Beaudoin covers the bed itself, from the Beaudoin Level platform bed to steel frames and tufted headboards, 17 pieces in all. Mako is the bigger line, and its pieces on our site break down like this:
- 43 chests and 42 beds
- 35 nightstands and 28 dressers
- 17 mirrors, 15 bookcases, 8 desks and 5 armoires
- 17 other pieces, from coffee tables to blanket boxes
The low end is the Decora two-drawer nightstand, and the high end is the king Belmont storage bed. The Belmont has two drawers on each side and nightstands built into the headboard. Each Mako page suggests asking us which stains Mako offers on that collection. What a Mako bedroom costs here, collection by collection, has its own page.
Are any mattresses at Merit made in Canada?
Some are, going by our product pages, though the makers haven't confirmed it to us model by model. Our pages list these as made in Canada:
- Restonic, 6 mattresses, all listed for our Duncan store
- Beautyrest, 4 mattresses at our Campbell River store
- Seva Sleep, 1 mattress, carried at both our Port Alberni and Campbell River stores
- Serta, 2 mattresses at our Campbell River store
- Spring Air, 2 mattresses at our Port Alberni store, which their pages say Restwell makes in BC
- Harmony, 1 mattress at our Campbell River store
The Campbell River and Port Alberni mattresses carry no online price, so a call to that store gets our best price.
Restwell is a separate case. Restwell Sleep Products describes itself as a family-owned mattress maker in Surrey, BC. Of our 12 Restwell pages, 9 say the product or its maker is Canadian, but Restwell hasn't confirmed which models it builds, and most of the names aren't on its site. The Restwell models, priced, are listed on their own page.
What Canadian-made furniture costs in money, time and flexibility
Canadian-made furniture usually costs more than the imports we list. Decor-Rest sofas on our site start at $1,349 before applicable taxes, and a made-to-order Island Living is a quote to ask us for. We list 36 Ashley sofas that don't recline, fold out or come with a chaise, and 33 of them are under $1,349, starting at $549.
Time is the second cost. A Decor-Rest or Mako order takes 8 to 10 weeks to be ready for pickup or delivery. A made-to-order Island Living takes 6 to 8, or 2 to 3 when Island Living has it in stock in Vancouver. If a special order runs late, we lend you furniture at no charge while you wait.
A made-to-order piece is also a commitment made before it exists. Special orders here start with a 24% deposit, paid when the frame and cover are chosen.
It's the wrong choice for a sofa that has to arrive this month, for a tight budget, or for a room you plan to redo in three years.

Seeing Canadian-made furniture in Campbell River, Port Alberni or Duncan
Merit has four showrooms on the Island, and three of them carry Canadian-made pieces. Not every one is on every floor, so a call before the drive saves a wasted trip. If you have questions about where a particular piece was built, ask whoever picks up. If we don't know, we'll ask the maker.
