Canadian-made bedroom furniture is a bed, dresser, chest or nightstand that its maker builds in a Canadian plant. Canadian-made bedroom furniture brands that say so on their own sites include Durham Furniture in Ontario, Mobican in Quebec and, for its made-to-order upholstered beds, Island Living in Burnaby, BC.
At Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island, we list 286 pieces of bedroom furniture, and 3 of them are built in Canada by their maker's own account. They are the Island Living Elk, Island Living Somenos and Island Living Saltspring upholstered beds, made to order. Another 17 come from Beaudoin, a Quebec bed maker that we, as owners, count as Canadian-made. Most of the rest comes from Mako and from Ashley, an American maker.
Mako is the biggest name on our bedroom pages, with 179 bedroom pieces (210 Mako pieces in all). They come from a Surrey, BC company that hasn't said where it builds. We count Mako on a line of its own, apart from the Island Living and Beaudoin beds.
Which bedroom furniture brands are made in Canada?
The bedroom furniture brands we found that state Canadian manufacture are mostly in Ontario and Quebec, and Island Living, in Burnaby, is the BC maker among them. The table quotes each maker's site as we read it in September 2026, and Merit carries only Island Living from the list.
| Maker | In its own words |
|---|---|
| Durham Furniture, Durham, Ontario | Made "at our plant in the Town of Durham, Ontario, Canada", in solid wood, since 1899. Beds, dressers, chests, nightstands, mirrors and armoires. |
| West Bros Furniture, Hanover, Ontario | Calls itself "a family-owned Canadian manufacturer of solid wood bedroom, dining, and workspace furniture, handcrafted in Hanover, Ontario". Seven bedroom collections, and the site names white oak and walnut. |
| Mobican, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec | "The entire process, design and production, is done locally in our facility in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu", since 1988. It makes "bedroom furniture, dining room sets as well as audio video modules" in walnut, cherry, white oak, maple and teak. |
| Huppé, Victoriaville, Quebec | Beds, dressers and nightstands, "made in Canada" by Huppé's account, from a company founded in 1967. Its Lounging line has been produced with Italdivani since 2016. |
| De Gaspé, Montreal | "Designed here, and made here, in our workshop". Solid wood beds, dressers and nightstands in yellow birch, white oak or walnut. |
| Island Living, Burnaby, BC | "One of Canada's largest furniture manufacturers", established in 1959. Upholstered beds in its made-to-order collection, including the Elk, Somenos and Saltspring we list. |
Magnussen Home, a bedroom maker sold through Canadian stores, calls itself "a wholesale manufacturer and supplier" and names no plant on its site. Beaudoin sits outside the table, since its Canadian status comes from us as owners rather than a quote from its site.
Canadian-made bedroom furniture at Merit, maker by maker
Counts and prices for Merit's bedroom furniture range were re-read from our live product pages on October 16, 2026. Prices are before applicable taxes.
| Maker | On our site |
|---|---|
| Island Living, made to order | 3 upholstered beds, quoted in store. Built in Burnaby, BC, home of its made-to-order line. |
| Beaudoin, Quebec | 17 pieces: 5 steel bed frames, 5 platform beds, 6 headboards and a footboard. Canadian-made, confirmed by our owners. Port Alberni carries most, Campbell River one platform bed, and the 961G metal frame is also listed for Duncan. Call that store for our best price. |
| Mako Wood Furniture | 210 pieces, 179 of them in our bedroom range; those listed for Duncan run $349 to $3,449. Where it builds: not stated. Its site lists an office in Surrey, BC. |
| Sleepchest | 10 cabinet beds, $1,899 to $2,999. Where it builds: not stated. It says it is "owned and operated in Canada", from an address in Rocky View County, Alberta. |
| Ashley | 64 bedroom pieces; the 33 listed for Duncan run $79 to $1,299. |
Decor-Rest also builds in Canada, in Woodbridge, Ontario, and it makes nothing for our bedroom range. All 123 of its pieces with us are sofas, sectionals, chairs, loveseats, ottomans and recliners. The Decor-Rest living room pieces are where our Canadian-made furniture runs deepest.
Restwell stays out of our Canadian-made count. We list 12 Restwell pieces, 8 mattresses and 4 adjustable bases, and Restwell Sleep Products calls itself "a family-owned mattress and sleep product manufacturer located in Surrey". Its site doesn't say where these models are built.
Is Ashley bedroom furniture made in Canada?
No. Ashley lists its manufacturing and distribution centres in the United States and Vietnam, and none of our 64 Ashley bedroom pages calls a piece Canadian-made.
Does Mako count as Canadian-made bedroom furniture?
Mako is mostly solid wood from a BC company. Whether it is Canadian-made is Mako's to say, and Mako hasn't said. For a buyer who wants "made in Canada" in writing, that settles it for now. For a buyer who wants solid wood from a British Columbia company, Mako fits.
The nearest public record comes from the Province. On April 8, 2026, BC's Ministry of Jobs and Economic Growth called Mako "a furniture producer in Surrey". Those words stop short of saying where a given dresser was built. The wood can come from abroad: in 2019, Mako's site described its pine as "produced with Radiata Pine from South America". Every record we checked for a Mako plant is laid out in the Mako guide.
The Aspen dresser in the photo has nine drawers and is $1,849, with its mirror at $399.
Island Living Elk, Somenos and Saltspring: the made-to-order beds built in Burnaby
The Island Living Elk, Somenos and Saltspring are upholstered beds, a bed frame and headboard covered in fabric. Island Living lists all three in its made-to-order collection, the line it builds in Burnaby. The Elk and Somenos come in queen or king in the fabric you choose, and we list the Saltspring as a queen. Its in-stock collection has upholstered beds too, the Berlin, Eden and Lille, and Island Living's in-stock pieces are made overseas; we list none of those three.
Island Living Elk, queen or king
Quoted in store, like every Island Living piece. The headboard stands 51 inches tall and measures 11 inches front to back. The queen bed is 67 inches wide and the king 83, and both are 86 inches front to back. Espresso legs are standard, with grey or unfinished as options.
Island Living Somenos, queen or king
Also a quote to ask us for. The headboard is 52 inches tall and a slim 4 inches front to back. The queen is 66 inches wide and the king 82, and both are 86 inches front to back.
The Saltspring queen is 73 inches wide and 88 long, with a winged headboard 48 inches tall, on espresso legs only. A made-to-order bed is built after it is ordered. Ours are ready for pickup or delivery in 6 to 8 weeks, or 2 to 3 if Island Living has the bed in stock in Vancouver. Its range runs to upholstery and upholstered beds, with no dressers or nightstands. A Canadian-made bed from us therefore stands beside case goods, meaning dressers, chests and nightstands, from another maker.
Asked which of our makers are genuinely Canadian-made, Rubeena and I named two: Island Living and Decor-Rest. In October we added Beaudoin, for its Quebec beds. For a made-to-order bed, we write the measurements on the invoice and ask for one more check at home.
Solid wood, veneer or MDF: how bedroom furniture is built
Bedroom furniture is built from solid wood, from veneer over a core, or from engineered panels, and most product pages say which. Solid wood means boards of real wood all through, and it moves a little with the seasons and the room it sits in. Canada's formaldehyde regulations define a veneer as a sheet of wood no more than 6.4 millimetres thick, cut from a log. MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is wood fibre pressed with resin, and particleboard is wood particles pressed the same way.
Our pages split along those lines. Of the 179 Mako bedroom pieces, 164 are listed as solid wood, solid pine or solid maple. The newer listings among the rest say pine wood or name no material. Of the 64 Ashley bedroom pages, 38 name engineered wood, most often "MDF/particleboard" under a decorative laminate, and 17 name a veneer. Of those same pages, 4 mention solid wood, and 3 of those pair it with engineered wood or veneer.
Sleepchest builds its cabinet beds from "real wood veneers and solid wood", with engineered wood to keep them light. The Cabos in the photo closes to a cabinet 64 inches wide and 23.25 inches deep. It opens into a queen bed 80 inches long, and it needs no installation.
Canadian-made and solid wood are separate questions. Huppé, one of the Quebec makers in the first table, describes wood veneers "carefully installed over the panels and edges" on its process page.
Particleboard and MDF made in or imported into Canada since January 7, 2023 have to meet formaldehyde emission limits, including the panels inside a finished dresser or bed. The limits are 0.09 parts per million for particleboard, 0.11 for MDF and 0.13 for thin MDF (8 mm or less). The rules call for a label on the piece, its bundle or its packaging. It names who made, imported or sold the piece, the month and year it was made, and its CANFER or TSCA Title VI compliance.
What company makes the best quality bedroom furniture?
No maker owns that title, and the quality shows in the piece itself. It shows in what the page says the wood is, what sits under any veneer, and how the drawers run and join at the corners. Pulling every drawer all the way out is the test in our dresser guide. In setting up a kid's bedroom, anchoring the dresser to the wall matters as much.
What "Made in Canada" means on a bed or dresser label
A "Made in Canada" label on a bed or dresser has to pass the Competition Bureau's test. Its three conditions, worked through for sofas, apply to bedroom pieces the same way. The Bureau gives no furniture example. For a dresser, the step that counts, the last substantial transformation, is most likely where boards and panels are cut, assembled and finished. So imported lumber can go into a piece that still qualifies. A head office address, "owned and operated in Canada" or "Designed in Canada" describes the company or one step, and says nothing about the plant.
The store works the same way. A Canadian business, online or on the Island, can sell imported furniture, and most of what Merit lists is imported. For a bed built here, the maker's own statement is what counts, whichever store sells it.
When a Canadian-made bed from Merit is the wrong buy
A Canadian-made bed from Merit is the wrong buy for anyone set on a matching Canadian-made suite, since the dresser and nightstands would come from Mako, Ashley or another maker. No solid wood dresser, chest or nightstand on our site carries its maker's written word that it was built in Canada. Pieces from different makers can still sit well together, and paint, bedding and accents around black furniture are one way to tie them.
It is also the dearer route. A made-to-order Island Living bed like the Elk is quoted in store, and it costs several times what a typical Ashley queen bed does. Mako's queen beds sit between the two, with a middle price of $1,449.
Time and the deposit count too. A Mako order takes 8 to 10 weeks and an Ashley one 4 to 6, each then ready for pickup or delivery. If one runs late, we lend you furniture at no charge until it arrives. Every special order carries a 24% deposit, Mako and Ashley alike. How a made-to-order piece moves from deposit to door has the steps.

Who to call about a Island Living or Beaudoin bed
A Island Living bed comes down to a size and a fabric, so the first step can be a phone call before anyone makes a drive. Our Duncan showroom is on Ingram Street and keeps Monday to Saturday hours, 9 to 5. Courtenay and Comox are served from our Campbell River store at 1300 A Homewood Road, (250) 286-0868, open Monday to Saturday, 10 to 5. It has the Beaudoin Reflexx twin platform bed listed, while a Island Living bed is ordered through Duncan. Sixteen Beaudoin pieces, such as the Beaudoin Heaven queen headboard, are at Port Alberni, (250) 724-6644, so call there for our best price. Nobody at any of the three stores will rush the decision, and a sketch of the room with the doorways marked makes that first call quicker.
Delivery from our Duncan store is $150 across the Island, assembly included; Gulf Islands delivery covers some islands, and the store explains the rest by phone. Duncan's crew may go as far as Comox for a larger order, and a mattress travelling across the Island may need a different shipping method. Delivery terms from Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni are set by each store, and whoever answers there can give them. Merit backs the maker's warranty on everything we sell, and we order the parts and do the repair ourselves.

The whole bedroom range sits on one page with prices, and the 210 Mako pieces have a page of their own. Guides to each Canadian maker we carry and to beds, dressers and nightstands are gathered on two guide pages.
