Kids bedroom ideas: safe bunks, anchored dressers and beds that grow with them

Mako Youth solid wood slide bed with a pull-out trundle - Merit Home Furniture

My kids bedroom ideas start with two safety rules from Health Canada: anchor anything tall enough to tip, and keep children under 6 off a top bunk. Then come the bed and its size, the dresser, the storage and the colour on the walls, in the order I'd work through them. A room planned for a three-year-old has to work again at eight and at fourteen.

A child's bedroom is usually just called a kids' room, or a nursery while the child is still a baby. It is a bedroom like any other, except that the person sleeping in it keeps growing. The pieces that matter most are the ones you only want to buy once.

Prices here are from Merit Home Furniture's listings on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes. Most of the kids bedroom furniture we list for our Duncan store on Vancouver Island is the Youth collection from Mako Wood Furniture. The Province of BC describes Mako as "a furniture producer in Surrey".

Which kids bedroom ideas are safe? Start with Health Canada's rules

Safe kids bedroom ideas pass two checks: nothing tall can fall onto a child, and nobody under 6 sleeps up high. Both rules come from real injuries. Health Canada counted 90 reports of furniture tip-overs in Canada between June 2011 and September 2024, 12 of them deaths. A Public Health Agency of Canada study found 6,002 people treated in hospital emergency departments for bunk bed injuries over 20 years. In its closer look at upper bunk injuries from 2002 to 2006, 52.3% of those hurt were under 6.

Anchoring the dresser, bookcase and TV in a kids bedroom

Health Canada's tip-over page lists what makes a piece unstable. A top-heavy design, an uneven floor, heavy things in it or on top, and a child pulling up on it are all on the list. Dressers carry an extra risk, because open drawers make a ladder. The advice is to anchor furniture to the wall with angle braces or safety straps. They go into a stud, or into heavy-duty drywall anchors made for that kind of furniture. Drawer locks help, and so do heavy things kept in the bottom drawers and toys kept off the top.

For a TV, the same page says to fix a flat screen to the wall where possible, or to use a stand built for that size of set. A dresser top is a poor home for a TV in a kid's room. Health Canada's assessment of clothing storage units treats free-standing dressers and chests 686 mm (27 inches) or taller as a possible tip-over hazard to children. Every Mako Youth dresser and chest on our site stands taller than that.

Here's how the Mako Youth storage pieces listed for our Duncan store measure up against that 27-inch line.

Mako Youth piece Height Price
2-drawer nightstand 21.5 in $349
6-drawer dresser, 48 in wide 30 in $799
8-drawer dresser, 48 in wide 37 in $899
4-drawer chest 38 in $549
5-drawer chest 46 in $649

The nightstand sits under the line, but a toddler can still climb it, so I'd keep it beside the bed with nothing on top worth reaching for. Mako's listings don't say whether an anchor kit comes in the box. Ask us when you order, and ask whether the delivery crew can fit it. For drawer count and height in any room, we have a separate guide to choosing a dresser.

Health Canada's bunk bed and loft bed rules for kids

Health Canada's bunk bed page reads like a checklist. It recommends a bed certified to a standard such as ASTM F1427, with guardrails on all 4 sides of the top bunk, even against a wall. The ladder should be firmly attached, and corner posts shouldn't rise more than 5 millimetres above the rails or end panels. The mattress has to fit snugly, and the guardrails should stand at least 12.7 centimetres (5 inches) above the top of the mattress on every side.

For everyday use, the rules are one child on the top bunk at a time, the ladder every time, and nothing tied to the bed. The space under a top bunk is only a play area when the maker designed it as one, which matters for anyone planning a hideout below. Health Canada also says to place the bed away from ceiling fans, windows and cords. The emergency department study points the same way: of the injuries tied to the upper bunk, 93% were falls. We don't list loft beds, but the same page covers them.

Moving from a crib to a kids bed

The move from a crib to a bed has a plain trigger in Health Canada's sleep safety booklet. A crib shouldn't be used once the child is taller than 90 cm, or can climb out of it, whichever comes first. Toddler beds sit low, often take the crib mattress, and are meant for children up to about five years old.

A toddler bed's side rails remind a child where the edge is, but Health Canada says they won't stop a fall or a climb. The same booklet says never to put a child under two on a bed fitted with portable bed rails. For a young child in a regular bed, it suggests keeping the floor beside the bed clear, or laying a crib mattress there. A low frame helps too. The Ashley Socalle twin platform bed listed for Duncan stands 15 inches high and starts at $159 in black.

Twin or full in a kids room: the sizes and the space each takes

A twin is the usual size for a child's room, and a full, which Canadian makers often call a double, adds 15 inches of width. On the Restwell Robin listing, the twin mattress is 38 by 74 inches and the double is 53 by 74. Both are the same length, so neither gives a tall teenager more room at the foot. That's where the extra five inches of a twin XL come into it.

Listing Twin Double
Restwell Robin mattress size 38 x 74 in 53 x 74 in
Restwell Robin price $799 $849
Mako Youth captain's bed footprint 40.5 x 76 in 54 x 76 in
Mako Youth captain's bed price $999 $1,399

In a small room, the 13.5 inches between those two captain's beds can decide whether a desk fits along the same wall. A double earns its space for a teenager who'll keep the bed for years, or a room that has to sleep a visiting cousin. Our chart of every Canadian mattress size sets out the room each one needs.

The twin mattresses Merit lists for Duncan come from Restwell, Restonic and Natura, with Natura's twins starting at $1,649. The Restonic Minto twin is $698, the Restonic Prestige twin $748, the Restwell Robin twin $799, and the Restonic Notte and Mondena twins $1,488 each. Those five stand about 12 to 15 inches tall, which matters on a bunk. Mattresses take 2 to 3 weeks before they're ready for pickup or delivery, and the rest are in our twin mattresses.

Kids beds that grow with them: captain's, mates, trundle and bunk

A bed that grows with a child still makes sense once the child is bigger. The Mako Youth beds manage it two ways. They come in twin, double, queen and king, and the headboard is sold on its own. A twin bought at six can give way to a queen from the same line at fourteen and still match the dresser. The captain's bed has four drawers on each side, from $999 in twin. The mates bed sits lower, at 16 inches, from $799 in twin, where Mako fits two drawers on one side and a cupboard.

The Mako Youth panel headboard is $399 in twin, and the bookcase headboard, 8 inches deep, is $599. Both are made in twin, double and queen. Mako orders take 8 to 10 weeks before they're ready for pickup or delivery.

Trundle beds for kids' sleepovers and siblings

A trundle keeps a second twin under the first, ready for a sleepover or a younger sibling. The Mako Youth slide bed with trundle is $1,249, with a panel headboard and footboard and two drawers on one side. Its listing gives 43 by 80 inches, 32 inches high. The lower bed needs clear floor to slide out, so I'd measure that before anything else. The listing doesn't give the trundle mattress thickness, so ask us before choosing one for it.

Five bunk beds in Merit's bunk bed collection list the Duncan store, all from Ashley. Health Canada and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission both keep children under 6 off the top bunk, and most of these listings repeat the CPSC warning.

Bunk bed Setup Price
Ashley Halanton Twin over twin, splits into two beds $818
Ashley Robbinsdale Twin over twin, antiqued white $819
Ashley Dinsmore Twin over twin, metal, top bunk 47.5 in up $840
Ashley Lanceburg Twin over twin, metal, splits into two twins $843
Ashley Halanton twin over full Full on the bottom, storage drawer $1,199
Ashley Halanton twin over full bunk bed in dark brown with a fixed ladder and under-bed drawer - Merit Home Furniture

The Halanton twin over full's listing says it's on display at our Duncan store, so a quick call will tell you whether it's set up to look at. Ashley orders take 4 to 6 weeks before they're ready.

The mattress is the easy part to get wrong on a bunk. Health Canada's 5-inch rule means a thick mattress can raise a sleeping child close to the top of the guardrail. None of our bunk listings gives a mattress thickness, so check the bunk's label or instructions for the thickness it takes before pairing one. When a bunk is split into two beds, Health Canada says to take the guardrails off the top bunk. They're built for children 6 and older and can trap a younger child.

From the showroom floor

For an only child under 6 with a sibling on the way, I'd look hard at a bunk that splits. Set it up as two separate twins now, then stack it once the older one turns 6, with the guardrails back on the top bunk. It's one purchase instead of two, and nobody sleeps up high too early.

Shared kids bedroom ideas for siblings

A shared kids bedroom works when each child has a bed, a drawer and a shelf that belongs to them. Mirror-image matching is the simplest plan: two twin beds on opposite walls, a nightstand each, and the same headboard dressed in two sets of bedding. That distance also helps two children who keep each other awake get the sleep kids need. With a big kid and a little one, the age gap decides the layout. A child under 6 sleeps on the bottom bunk or in a bed of their own, never on top.

Privacy can come from furniture instead of walls. A low chest between two beds, a curtain on a ceiling track, or a screen at the foot of one bed all split a room. A tall bookcase used as a divider still needs anchoring, though, and one standing in the middle of the floor has no wall to fix to. Colour-coded bins, back-to-back beds and one rug as the shared play space are cheap ways to keep the peace.

Organizing a child's bedroom so they can keep it tidy

Organizing a child's bedroom comes down to height. If a child can't reach the drawer or the shelf, the toys end up on the floor. Low storage does most of the work: a blanket box at the foot of the bed, drawers built into the bed base, and the lower dresser drawers for everyday clothes. The Mako Youth blanket box is 18 inches high with a lift lid, $549 at 38 inches wide, or $649 for the 54-inch box.

Storage beds hold the most clutter for the floor they take. A captain's bed has eight drawers for clothes or toys. The Halanton twin over full has a drawer on casters underneath, 57.5 by 14.75 inches inside and 7.25 inches high. For a cheaper start, Merit lists the Ashley Oliah bookcase storage bed at $249 in twin, with cubbies in the headboard and side rail and two USB charging ports. Larger beds with drawers are among our storage beds.

Corners and walls hold the rest. A desk tucked into a corner, hooks at a child's shoulder height, and shelves going up the wall all clear the floor for play. Anything tall goes against a wall and gets anchored, by the same Health Canada advice as the dresser. A kid-friendly living room calls for the same anchoring and toy storage.

A desk for homework in a small kids room

A study corner fits in a narrow strip of wall. The Mako Youth student desk is 48 inches wide, 18 deep and 30 high, with a pencil drawer and a pedestal of three drawers. It's $649 with the pedestal on the left-hand side and $599 with it on the right-hand side. It shares its 18-inch depth with the Youth dressers, so the two line up along one wall. The rest of Merit's desk listings are office desks, 46 to 62.5 inches wide.

At 30 inches, it matches the height of the Mako office desks we list, so a younger child sits too low at it. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety writes for people at work. It describes feet flat on the floor or a footrest, elbows near 90 degrees, and no more than 50 minutes of sitting at a time. A chair that raises the child plus a box under their feet comes close to that. For a child with back or posture worries, ask their doctor or a physiotherapist.

What are the 7 golden rules for bedroom design in a kids room?

There's no official list of seven golden rules for bedroom design. These are the seven I'd use for a kids room, roughly in order.

  1. Anchor before filling. Anything a child could climb goes to a wall stud before the drawers are loaded.
  2. Measure the room and the door. Note the walls, the window and the door swing before choosing a bed. Our outside measurements for each bed frame help here.
  3. Buy the bed for the next five years. A line that comes in bigger sizes, or a bunk that splits, saves buying twice.
  4. Keep daily things low. Low drawers and boxes hold what gets used every day, and high shelves hold keepsakes.
  5. Keep the walls calm and let the bedding carry the colour. Paint takes a weekend to redo, and a duvet cover comes off in one go.
  6. Give each part of the room one job. Sleep against the wall, play on the rug, homework by the window.
  7. Leave room to grow. Keep one wall or corner open for the desk, the bigger bed or the hobby that hasn't started yet.

Colours and bedroom trends for kids in 2026

The colour that's in for bedrooms in 2026, by Benjamin Moore's pick, is Silhouette AF-655, a deep brown with charcoal undertones. Its 2026 palette sets it beside seven other shades, including Swiss Coffee OC-45 and Narragansett Green HC-157. A brown that dark suits an accent wall behind a teenager's bed better than a toddler's whole room. For younger children, I'd paint a calm canvas and let the colour come from bedding, a rug and art that can change as their interests do.

Warm colours, the peaches and soft yellows, can make a north-facing Island room feel less grey through a wet winter. Cool blues and greens settle a room that takes the afternoon sun. Themed rooms, from nautical seas to woodland charm, last longer in bedding and a wall decal than in furniture. One wallpaper can tie a shared room together while each child picks their own bedding. Plain wood underneath keeps the room classic, and Merit's Mako guide explains what Mako builds in Surrey, and from which woods.

The modern ideas for a kids bedroom lean toward less: fewer pieces, plain bedding, open floor and furniture that does two jobs, like a bed with drawers. Personal touches still count, so I'd save one wall for their drawings, ribbons or a pinboard.

Fresh paint is worth airing out. Health Canada's page on household pollutants advises plenty of ventilation during major painting projects, and washing permanent press sheets before they go on the bed.

Where to splurge and where to save in a kids room

At Merit, I'd put the money in a kids room into what gets used every night or fixed to a wall, and save on what a child will outgrow.

Kids bedroom pieces worth spending on

The mattress, since a child sleeps on it every night and may keep it into their teens; a Duncan twin starts at $698. The dresser or chest, because it's the piece that gets anchored and filled for a decade. A bed frame that comes in bigger sizes or a bunk that splits, so the room can change without starting over.

Kids room buys that are fine to save on

Bedding, paint, rugs, wall decals and small chairs, all of which change with a child's tastes. A first bed for a young child can be modest too: the Socalle twin platform bed starts at $159, and the Oliah storage bed is $249. Soft pine also dents, so a cheaper piece suits a child who's hard on furniture.

From Merit's Duncan store, delivery is $150 across the Island, with assembly included, which saves an evening with a bunk bed's instructions. Pickup at Duncan is free. If an old crib or toddler bed is leaving the house, we can take it away at delivery, usually for $25 to $50 a piece. Sheets and mattress protectors aren't mailed: pick them up free at Duncan, or add them to the furniture delivery.

When a kids bedroom idea is the wrong one

  • A top bunk for a child under 6, for any reason, a nap included.
  • A thick mattress on a bunk whose label calls for a thinner one, which eats into the 5 inches of guardrail.
  • A TV sitting on a dresser. Health Canada wants TVs on the wall or on a stand built for them.
  • A second-hand bunk without its instructions or with parts missing. Health Canada says to get the original instructions and replace missing parts only with the maker's own.
  • Portable bed rails for a child under two.
  • Anything tied to a bunk. Health Canada warns that cords, scarves and ropes can strangle.
