Mako Wood Furniture Inc. is a solid wood furniture company in Surrey, British Columbia, selling through a network of dealers. Its own website gives Surrey as its office and never says where the furniture is built. The Province of BC calls Mako "a furniture producer in Surrey", and says it is building a new facility in Merritt while keeping its Surrey operations. If Mako says where it builds, this page will change to match.
At Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island, we list 210 Mako pieces across 28 collections, most of them beds, chests and other bedroom pieces, from a $349 nightstand to a $3,449 king storage bed, before applicable taxes. Mako's current site files its collections under alder, pine and maple, and where it names the wood of a collection we list, the answer is pine or maple.
Where is Mako furniture made? What Mako and the public records say
Mako's own pages never say where its furniture is built. We read every page on makowood.com, then Mako's business and social profiles, a trade directory and BC's corporate registry, and none of them names a plant. The Province of BC is more specific. Its news release of April 8, 2026 calls Mako "a furniture producer in Surrey". It says Mako is receiving "up to $5.5 million to build a new facility in Merritt, while retaining its Surrey operations". On April 15, the Merritt Herald ran a photo of the Merritt factory under construction, off Lindley Creek Road.
| Where we looked | What it says |
|---|---|
| makowood.com, contact page | "Our office": 13221 76 Avenue, Surrey, BC |
| makowood.com, home page | "Manufacturer of solid wood furniture in Alder, Pine and Maple." No plant or town is named. |
| makowood.com, collection pages | "Decora Series Made in Pine Wood", and the same for each collection. Here "made in" names the wood. |
| Mako's Google Business Profile | Listed as a "Furniture manufacturer" at the Surrey address. The description says Mako sells in both Canada and the USA. |
| Mako's Instagram profile | "Manufacturers of Solid Wood Furniture in Maple & Pine", "Serving up to 600+ dealers around North America" |
| Province of BC news release, April 8, 2026 | Surrey operations kept, plus a new Merritt facility backed by the BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund |
| BC Corporate Registry, OrgBook BC | Mako Wood Furniture Inc., a BC company, active, registered July 24, 2003 |
| Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade directory | Listed under "Furniture Mfrs" at the Surrey address |
Our product pages read "Made in Canada (Surrey, BC)" on 186 of our 210 Mako listings. Mako's own site doesn't say where it builds, and the Province describes a furniture producer in Surrey. For a Made in Canada claim, the Competition Bureau's enforcement guidelines set the test. They look for the last substantial transformation in Canada and at least 51% of total direct costs spent here. A qualifier such as "with imported parts" should go with the claim. Materials count in that cost test, and wood is a material. A 2019 capture of Mako's own site said: "Our Pine collection is produced with Radiata Pine from South America." How Canadian-made labels work has the full test.
Who are some Canadian wood furniture manufacturers?
Canadian wood furniture makers that build here tend to say so in plain words. Durham Furniture, an Ontario maker Merit doesn't carry, says its furniture is made "at our plant in the Town of Durham, Ontario, Canada". Mako's site has no sentence like it. Among the makers we do carry, Decor-Rest and the made-to-order side of Island Living are two that say they build in Canada, both for upholstered pieces. Our made-in-Canada guides follow each one.
What is mako wood?
Mako wood is a brand name, taken from the company, Mako Wood Furniture, and the furniture sold under it is pine, maple or alder. A listing that treats "mako" as a species of tree is repeating the brand. The closest real timber name is makoré, a West African hardwood. The US Forest Products Laboratory's sheet covers it together with a second species, douka, and places the two from Sierra Leone to Cameroon and Gabon. Mako lists no makoré at all.
Mako's current home page says its pine is "sourced from sustainable forests" and its maple comes "from responsibly managed forests", without naming a country.
Which Mako collections are pine, maple or alder?
Of the 28 Mako collections on our site, Mako's current site places seven in pine and two in maple. It names no wood for twelve others, though Robina and Sameena appear on its armoire page. An earlier version of the site, captured by the Internet Archive in 2016, filed Grace, Natalie, Robina and Sameena under pine. Our pages list nearly all of those twelve simply as solid wood. Seven newer collections, most of them stocked at our Port Alberni store, haven't yet been checked against Mako's site.
| Wood | Our Mako collections |
|---|---|
| Pine | Claudette, Decora, Ella, Erica, Polo, Soho and Youth: 91 pieces, $349 to $1,799 |
| Maple | Megan and Saffron: 16 pieces, $399 to $2,999 |
| Alder | None on our site at the moment. Mako's alder lines include Columbia and Farmhouse |
| No wood named on Mako's current site | Aspen, Belmont, Brandon, Grace, Monkland, Natalie, Oxford, Robina, Ross, Sameena, Sophia and Supreme: 81 pieces, $349 to $3,449 |
| Newer listings, not yet checked | Adam, Belle, Chloe, Dexter, Pecan, Scarlett and Symphony: 22 pieces, $349 to $2,499 |
The price gap between pine and maple shows on a nine-drawer dresser. The Polo and the Decora, both pine and 58 inches wide by 37.5 high, are $1,149 and $1,049. The maple Megan is 59 wide by 44 high, with six deep drawers, at $2,599.
Mako's stain page lists 12 finishes for pine, counting "Lacquer Only", and 6 for maple. Which of them a given collection takes is a question for us.
How durable is Mako furniture?
Mako furniture is solid wood, so the wood has a lot to do with how it wears. One difference between pine, alder and maple can be measured: hardness, which the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook defines as resistance to indentation. The Handbook tests it as the force needed to push a 0.444-inch steel ball halfway into the wood. Mako's current site doesn't name its pine or maple species. The table gives the Handbook's figures at 12% moisture for the US-grown species, plus radiata pine, the pine Mako named in 2019.
| Wood | Side hardness |
|---|---|
| Pines grown in the US, 12 species | 380 to 870 lbf (pounds of force): eastern white pine 380, longleaf 870 |
| Radiata pine, imported | 750 lbf |
| Red alder | 590 lbf |
| Maples grown in the US, 5 species | 700 to 1,450 lbf: silver maple 700, sugar maple 1,450 |
Three of the five maples rate harder than every pine in the table, radiata included, and red alder falls among the pines. On drawers, our pages name full-extension glides (the drawer pulls all the way out) on 35 Mako pieces and soft-closing glides on 8 Megan and Saffron pieces. The rest don't say which glides they use.
Solid wood also swells and shrinks a little with the seasons. Island humidity and solid wood goes through the rooms where that shows, such as a woodstove corner or a cabin left unheated.
Rubeena and I think of a Mako bedroom suite as buy-it-once furniture, made to last a lifetime. As we know it, it's solid wood throughout, without veneer, MDF or particle board. Mako's own site says "Built to Last" about its maple and puts no number of years on it.
Mako youth bed or a cheaper Ashley bed for a child's room?
A Mako Youth bed with a headboard costs about three and a half times an Ashley twin panel bed on our site. The Youth collection is pine, by Mako's site, and its Mates bed and Captain's bed have drawers built into the base. Neither comes with a headboard, and none of our bed prices includes a mattress.
Mako Youth Captain's bed, twin, $999
It measures 40.5 inches wide, 18 high and 76 long, with four drawers on one side and a cupboard, by Mako's own listing. The Youth panel headboard adds $399 in twin, for $1,398 together. The Youth Captain's bed comes up to king, and the Mates bed sits lower, at 16 inches, with two drawers and a cupboard on one side in twin.
Ashley Baystorm twin panel bed, $399
Headboard, footboard and rails, all in the one price, with a foundation or box spring needed underneath. Its page lists engineered wood (MDF and particleboard) under a decorative laminate with a replicated oak grain. Twin, it measures 40.75 inches wide and 78 long, with a one-year warranty. The Baystorm panel bed is a Signature Design by Ashley piece.
The $999 between the pair buys solid pine and drawers in place of board and laminate, and the two run about the same length end to end. The way I put it, a $399 bed is worth $399 and a $1,398 bed is worth $1,398, and they aren't apples to apples. If the room gets redone for a teenager in a few years, the Baystorm is good value, and so is budget furniture for anyone who likes to change styles. If the plan is to buy the bed once and keep it, the Mako makes the stronger case.
One detail to check on a twin. Our twin pages say drawers on both sides, which is the queen layout on Mako's site. Pushed against a wall, only one side opens anyway.
What Mako furniture costs at Merit, piece by piece
190 of our 210 Mako pieces show their price online, before applicable taxes. The other 20 are carried only at our Port Alberni or Campbell River store, so their pages say Call for Best Price. The ranges below are list prices and include them. Beds are priced by size on a single page, and a storage bed runs about twice the plain bed in the same collection. The Robina, for one, starts at $1,049 as a panel bed and $2,099 with storage drawers, both in double.
| Piece | On our site | Price range |
|---|---|---|
| Beds | 42 | $599 to $3,449 |
| Chests | 43 | $549 to $2,599 |
| Nightstands | 35 | $349 to $849 |
| Dressers | 28 | $649 to $2,599 |
| Mirrors | 17 | $349 to $949 |
| Armoires | 5 | $899 to $1,649 |
| Bookcases | 15 | $449 to $949 |
| Desks | 8 | $599 to $1,349 |
| Other pieces | 17 | $399 to $1,799 |
The other pieces are hutches, headboards, bedside towers, blanket boxes, occasional tables, a lift-top storage base, and a dining table with chairs. Every Mako listing, with its price, sits on one collection page. Width and height against the wall matter as much as the wood, and choosing a dresser by height and drawer count works through both.
Where Mako falls short, and who should skip it
Mako is the wrong choice for anyone who needs the maker's own written word on where a piece is built. Mako's site gives none, and the Province's release is about the company as a whole.
The Youth line is pine, softer than maple, and in a room with toy trucks and chair legs it will dent. A child who is hard on furniture is better matched with maple, or with a cheaper bed nobody minds marking.
Any open question, from the wood to the timing, is best settled before a special order goes in with its 24% deposit. How deposits and exchanges work at Merit is worth going over at the same time.
A few of our Mako sizes differ from Mako's own figures by half an inch to five inches, mostly on beds and armoires. For a tight alcove or a low window, the smaller figure is the safe one.
Mako warranty, delivery and lead times through Merit
Mako's website has no warranty page, and none of its pages sets out warranty terms. Merit backs the maker's warranty on Mako as on everything we sell. A problem comes to us first, and we order the parts and do the repair. Our warranty help doesn't cover accidental stains, rips, tears, cuts or burns. Anyone wanting cover past the maker's can add SmartOne, an extended plan from Zucora that runs as long as five years. It works on Mako pieces as it does on the rest of our range. The question of who handles a furniture warranty claim has its own guide.
The Duncan store delivers across the Island for $150, assembly included, though Comox is only for larger sales. A Gulf Islands delivery can be arranged for some islands; the Duncan store has the details. The Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni stores set their own delivery terms, so it's worth asking when calling.
Mako publishes no lead time. A Mako order through us is ready for pickup or delivery in 8 to 10 weeks. The Mako pieces at our Duncan store are display models. When a special order slips, we'll loan you furniture free until yours arrives. How a special order runs here covers the booking and the deposit.

Asking about Mako at the Duncan or Port Alberni store
Merit's product pages list Duncan for 190 of the 210 Mako pieces, Port Alberni for 78 and Campbell River for 32. We can't promise a given piece is on a floor, so ring ahead before making the drive. The Duncan showroom is at 107 Ingram Street, open 9 to 5, Monday to Saturday. In Port Alberni, call our Port Alberni store at (250) 724-6644. Bring the room's measurements and the mattress size. Take as long as you like; nobody trails you around the floor.
