What is leather match? Leather recliners in the makers' own words, with prices

Grey leather swivel recliner with its footrest raised - Merit Home Furniture

Leather match is a cover that puts hide where you sit and a matched leather-like material, usually polyurethane, everywhere else. On a recliner that means hide on the seat, back cushion and arm tops, and a lookalike on the outside arms and the back panel. The two are made to look like one colour.

At Merit Home Furniture we list 172 recliners for Vancouver Island buyers, and 8 of them are leather match. Two are listed at our Duncan store: the Ashley Bleckley at $1,049.00 and the Ashley Bolsena at $1,199.00. Below are the makers' own words for each cover, what each costs on our listings, and where the difference shows after a few years.

What is leather match on a recliner?

Leather match is hide on the parts your body touches and a leather-like cover on the parts it doesn't. Palliser, whose recliners we list, puts it most plainly: "This option uses 100% top grain leather on the places your body touches while sitting". Those places, it says, are the inside back cushions, the seat cushion and the top of the arm.

For the rest, Palliser writes that "Leather like covers are used to upholster areas that your body does not come into contact with while sitting". Those areas include the outside arms and back. It adds that the material "is most often made of polyurethane and closely resembles the leather it's being matched with". Palliser's stated reason is price: leather match "results in a lower price point without compromising aesthetic."

Ashley, which makes all but one of our leather-match recliners, uses its own standard line on its leather seating page. It reads: "100% top grain leather covers inside areas such as the back, seat and arm cushions; skillfully matched faux leather covers the remaining areas". Our Ashley McAleer listing gives the faux side's makeup: 26% polyester, 74% PVC.

So leather match describes where the hide goes. It says nothing about the grade of that hide, and the question to ask of any tag is what the rest is made of.

Scandi's 11 recliners are all listed at Duncan, and the 10 with a price run $2,049.00 to $5,099.00. Of our 57 La-Z-Boy recliners, 34 say on the page that they come in La-Z-Boy fabrics and leathers, and Merit quotes the cover in store. The full range sits in the recliner pages, which say which cover each chair has.

Leather and leather match furniture: where the difference shows

Leather and leather match look alike on day one, because Palliser says the matched cover aims for "a completely uniform visual look". The difference is in how each surface ages. Palliser expects hide to soften, relax and form "comfort wrinkles or puddling in the seat and back cushions," which it calls normal. Palliser makes no such claim for the matched panels.

A leather match recliner

It costs less for the same look, and the hide sits where wear happens. Palliser says the matched areas "typically experience less wear." It suits a chair that backs onto a wall, where nobody sees the outside back.

An all-leather recliner

Every face is hide, so the chair can float in a room and age evenly on all sides. That is how Decor-Rest, the Woodbridge, Ontario maker, builds its leather pieces.

I'd point most people toward leather match for a recliner that lives against a wall. For a swivel chair in the middle of a room, the outside back is in view every day, and all leather earns its price there. If the chair sits beside a leather sofa, I'd also plan the wall colours that flatter leather.

Does leather match peel?

Peeling is a question about the matched panels, since Palliser says they are usually polyurethane and the hide is not. Palliser places them where the body doesn't rest, and none of the makers we read gives a lifespan for them. La-Z-Boy's leather warranty and Ashley's 1 year warranty set the limits, covered further down.

Is genuine leather the lowest grade of leather?

Genuine leather means real hide, and none of the four makers' pages we read ranks it as a grade. Ashley uses both phrases on its leather seating page. Some pieces say "Genuine leather covers inside areas such as the back, seat and arm cushions", and others say "100% top grain leather" in the same spot.

Top grain has a plain definition from Palliser: leather "made from the top or outermost layer of a hide." Palliser says it uses only top grain. Decor-Rest says it uses "100 % top grain cowhide on all our leather designs every time and all around the furniture piece."

Our La-Z-Boy Tarleton listing says its Signature Leather "is leather/leather split," so ask which surfaces are which on that chair. Then there is what La-Z-Boy calls Recycled Leather. In La-Z-Boy's words, it "is a composite material constructed of recycled leather scraps with a cellular polyurethane face."

The finish matters as much as the layer. Palliser sorts top grain into pigmented, semi-aniline and full aniline. It calls pigmented the most practical and least likely to fade or stain, and full aniline the most natural looking. When a tag says only "genuine," ask which layer and which finish.

How leather recliners work: push-back, power and theatre style

Intercon Avalon dual power recliner in smoke top grain leather - Merit Home Furniture

Leather recliners come in the same three mechanisms as fabric ones, and the cover doesn't change how they move. A push-back chair reclines when you lean into it. The La-Z-Boy Scarlett, $1,599.00 and listed at Duncan, has two positions and comes in La-Z-Boy fabrics and leathers.

A power chair runs on a motor and buttons. The Intercon Avalon in the table adds a power headrest and a side USB port. Whether the motor is worth it is its own question, and power against manual recliners works it through.

Leather recliners for theatre seating

Theatre seating puts chairs in a row, often with a second row behind, so the outside backs face the room. On a leather match chair those backs are the leather-like panels, per Palliser's definition. Width adds up fast in a row. The faux leather Soundcheck from the table is 36 inches across, so three of them side by side need about 9 feet.

Choosing a leather recliner that fits you

Comfort in a leather recliner comes down to fit more than cover. Scandi offers each of its recliners in three height options, small, medium and large. Best Home Furnishings rates its Zaynah lift recliner for people 5 ft 6 in. to 6 ft 3 in. and under 350 lb.

The Zaynah power lift recliner is $2,149.00 in leather and is listed at Duncan and Port Alberni. The Harmony Cinder takes up to 400 lb. Fabric against leather on a sofa frame is a separate decision, and fabric against leather covers it.

What is the most comfortable recliner in Canada?

No single recliner is the most comfortable for everyone, because seat depth, seat height and back height have to suit one body. Sitting back fully in three or four chairs for ten minutes each tells you more than any ranking.

Are Costco leather recliners good quality?

I haven't sat in them, so I won't review them. The tag tells the story on any recliner, from any store: leather match means a synthetic somewhere, and "genuine" alone doesn't name the layer.

From the showroom floor

The quickest check is by hand. Run your hand from the seat to the outside of the arm, slowly. On hide you'll find the natural markings Palliser lists, such as healed scars and veins, and they change from spot to spot. The matched panel looks even all over.

When a leather recliner, or leather match, is the wrong choice

Heat is the first thing to plan for with leather. La-Z-Boy's care page says to keep leather furniture at least 12 inches "away from radiators and other heat sources". Palliser warns that on full aniline leather, "Direct exposure to sunlight or heat sources will result in fading or discoloration".

Near a wood stove, Merit's rule is conditioner at least twice a year so the hide doesn't crack early, using only what the maker allows. Conditioner is for hide. On La-Z-Boy's Recycled Leather, the maker says "After-treatment is NOT recommended for these covers." Ask us before treating any panel that isn't hide. Each maker's rules are in the care guide for leather.

Warranties are short on covers. Ashley's listings give 1 year. La-Z-Boy gives one year on fabric and leather, and says its leather coverage "does not cover dye lot match or fading". Its springs and most reclining mechanisms carry lifetime parts coverage with one year of labour. A La-Z-Boy leather recliner is the one to look at for longer mechanism cover.

Leather match is also the wrong cover for a chair seen from behind every day, since that view is the matched panel.

Seeing leather and leather match recliners in Duncan

To compare the two by hand, call the Duncan store first and ask which leather and leather match chairs are on display there. Merit's Duncan showroom on Ingram Street keeps Monday to Saturday hours, 9 to 5, at number 107. Nobody will follow you around.

From Duncan, a recliner is $150 to deliver across the Island with assembly, and a Gulf Islands delivery depends on which island, so it is settled on a call. Ashley chairs are ready for pickup or delivery in 4 to 6 weeks. For La-Z-Boy chairs, ask what's in stock; a custom cover takes 8 to 10 weeks. The other stores set their own delivery terms, so ask them. More on shapes and sizes is on our recliner guides page.
