Bedside table decor ideas: what goes on top, what goes in the drawer, and how big the lamp should be

LH Home West acacia nightstand with one drawer over an open niche - Merit Home Furniture

For bedside table decor ideas, I'd keep to one lamp sized to the table, one or two personal pieces, and a tray that keeps the small things together. Everything else goes in a drawer, and the patch of top nearest the pillow stays clear for the glass and the phone. A light within reach, a spot for the phone and room for a glass of water come first, and the decor fits around them.

Bedside table decor is any item that sits on a nightstand for looks or comfort rather than use. It might be a lamp with some character, a small plant, a framed photo or a dish for rings. At Merit Home Furniture in Duncan, I'd style any nightstand on the Island in that order: what the table does at night first, the decor second.

Merit lists 48 nightstands with the rest of our bedroom furniture across our Vancouver Island stores, 37 of them for Duncan, at $138.00 to $849.00 before applicable taxes. How much decor a nightstand carries depends mostly on its width, so the widths are in the tables below.

What should go on a bedside table?

A bedside table holds what you reach for between lying down and getting up. For most of us that's a light, the phone, water, glasses and perhaps one book. Decor earns its place only if those still fit. Here's where each common item goes, top or drawer.

Item Where it goes, and why
Lamp On top, toward the back corner, with the switch reachable lying down
Phone and charger Charging on the hard top, never on the bed or under the pillow
Water glass On a coaster at the front edge, nearest the pillow
Glasses, lip balm, rings In a trinket dish, a lidded box or the top drawer
Books One or two lying flat, which also lifts a small plant or frame
Clock Turned away or put in the drawer, if watching it keeps you awake
Plant or flowers Small and low, in a saucer, away from the charger and the lamp cord
Picture frame One, at the back, out of the reach zone
Candle or diffuser A battery candle in place of a flame; a diffuser on a tray

The candle row has a reason behind it. The Canada Safety Council says that outside the holiday season, candle fires most often start in the bedroom. It "strongly recommends keeping candles out of all bedrooms." A battery candle gives the same glow with nothing to blow out before sleep.

The clock row comes from HealthLink BC. Its advice on improving sleep says that if clock-watching makes you anxious, turn the clock so you can't see it, or put it in a drawer. If sleep doesn't improve after changes like these, HealthLink BC suggests talking to your doctor.

Bedside table decor ideas sized to the nightstand

Nightstand width sets how much decor fits on top, and the lamp is the piece to size first. Interior designer Bobby Berk's bedside lamp guide gives a ratio. The lamp should be "about one-third the width of the nightstand", measured at its widest point, base or shade. For height he suggests 22 to 27 inches, or the nightstand's height plus 2 inches.

Here are those two rules worked out for six nightstands listed for our Duncan store. Prices are as listed today, before applicable taxes.

Nightstand Width, storage, price Lamp by Berk's rules
Mako Decora 2-drawer mini 17 in., 2 drawers, $349.00 About 5.7 in. wide, 23.5 in. tall
LH Home West 19.8 in., 1 drawer and an open niche, $349.00 About 6.6 in. wide, 25.6 in. tall
Ashley Shawburn 20 in., 1 drawer and an open cubby, $138.00 About 6.7 in. wide, 25 in. tall
Mako Decora 2-drawer 22 in., 2 drawers, $399.00 About 7.3 in. wide, 23.5 in. tall
Mako Megan 24 in., 2 and a half drawers, $849.00 About 8 in. wide, 29 in. tall
Ashley Landocken 25 in., 2 drawers, $499.00 About 8.3 in. wide, 29 in. tall

The two height rules part company on the 27-inch Megan and Landocken. There I'd stay inside the 22 to 27 inch range, since Berk's concern is keeping the light out of your eyes when you read. The width ratio is a guide, too. A shade a little wider than a third still looks fine, but one wider than the top hangs over the edge and gets knocked. Lamps aren't listed on our website, though the Duncan showroom has some on display, so a call tells you what's in.

Height changes the picture as well, and it has its own guide on matching a nightstand to the mattress top.

Grouping decor on a wider nightstand top

A 17-inch top takes a lamp, a phone and a glass, and it's full. From about 22 inches up there's room for one more piece, a small plant or a frame. I'd vary the heights: the lamp tall at the back, a flat stack of books in the middle, a low dish at the front. Berk also wants the lamp to contrast with the nightstand in colour, texture or material, so a pale ceramic base reads well on a dark stain.

Matching or mismatched bedside tables: what designers say

Mismatched nightstands can work, and the designers who use them keep one thing the same across the bed. Homes and Gardens put the question to several designers in 2024. Their answers give a few rules worth borrowing.

  • Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin, puts it as balance: the tables can differ as long as they suit the room as a whole.
  • Amy Youngblood of Amy Youngblood Interiors likes a matched pair when both sides have room, especially beside a king. In an awkward room, or when one person uses the bed, she puts the larger table on the busier side.
  • Stylist Pippa Jameson notes that people usually walk in from one side, so both tables are rarely seen at once. Different styles are fine by her, but she keeps the heights similar.

Bobby Berk makes the case for contrast in wood. In a 2021 Homes and Gardens piece, he said woods that are too similar tend to look like a mistake side by side. He'd pair lighter and darker finishes instead.

Two nightstands listed for Duncan show how that can look. The Mako Decora 2-drawer is 21.5 inches tall in solid pine, photographed in a chocolate stain. The LH Home Atlantis is 21.7 inches tall in a light taupe brushed acacia, at $649.00. They differ by a fifth of an inch in height and a lot in colour, which is the pairing those designers describe.

Drawers or an open shelf: how the nightstand changes the decor

A nightstand with drawers hides the clutter, so the top can carry the decor. An open shelf puts its contents on show, so the shelf becomes part of the styling. All but two of the 37 nightstands Merit lists for Duncan are drawer pieces.

Drawers leave the top free for decor

The Mako Megan has two full drawers plus a shallow top drawer, all on soft-close glides, in solid maple. The shallow drawer is the one for glasses, cables and hand cream. It measures 24 wide, 18 deep and 27 tall.

An open shelf becomes part of the decor

The LH Home West has a felt-lined drawer of 16 by 13.5 by 3.25 inches over an open niche of 18 by 17 by 4 inches. A 4-inch niche holds books lying flat or a low basket. The Shawburn's open cubby takes a storage bin, as Ashley's own description suggests.

An open shelf looks tidy only if what's on it is chosen. A basket or a short stack of books works. A tangle of cables and receipts doesn't, and that's an argument for drawers in a busy household.

Organizing a nightstand so the decor fits: charging, cords and drawers

Organizing a nightstand comes down to what lives on top, what goes in the drawer and where the cords run. This is the order I'd tackle it in.

  1. Take everything off. Put back only what gets used most nights, and find another home for the rest.
  2. Give the top one tray or dish. Rings, glasses and lip balm go in it, and the rest of the surface stays clear.
  3. Charge on the hard top. Health Canada's battery factsheet says to "charge away from soft surfaces and bedding to prevent overheating." That rules out a phone charging under the pillow.
  4. Run the cords down the back. Adhesive cable clips along a back leg keep them off the floor, with a power bar behind the table. The same factsheet says to use a charger with a Canadian certification mark.
  5. Sort the drawer. Small boxes or a divider keep nightly things at the front of the top drawer, with spares lower down.

Charging built into the nightstand saves one cord on the floor. Three nightstands we list have it, and none is listed for Duncan. Each is carried at the store named, so a call there gets our best price and delivery terms.

Nightstand Charging, width, price, store
Ashley Hasbrick USB and wireless charging, 21.3 in. wide, $449.00, Campbell River
Ashley Willowton 2 USB ports, 23.74 in. wide, $366.00, Port Alberni
Ashley Bolanburg 2 electrical outlets and USB ports, 25.5 in. wide, $780.00, Port Alberni

What to put in bedside table drawers

The top drawer is for what you reach for in the dark. That means glasses in a case, a spare cable, hand cream, a notepad and pen, and a flashlight for a power cut. The Willowton's listing gives its drawer insides, and they show why depth matters. Its top drawer is 8.25 inches tall inside and the bottom one 4 inches, so a tissue box or a bottle on its end fits only the top one. A lower drawer suits the book you're not reading tonight and a spare pillowcase.

Bedside table ideas for a small bedroom

A small bedroom needs a nightstand that's narrow, shallow or built into the bed. Merit's Duncan list has one of each. Before choosing, measure the bed's overall width, frame and headboard included, against the wall; what each bed frame measures outside has the frame numbers.

  • Narrow: the Mako Decora mini is 17 inches wide and 18 deep, with two drawers, at $349.00.
  • Shallow and tall: the Mako Supreme bedside tower is 22.5 inches wide, 12 deep and 49 tall, at $649.00 each. It comes as a left and a right, made to stand beside the Supreme bookcase headboard bed.
  • Built in: the Mako Belmont side storage bed has floating nightstands on the headboard and two storage drawers each side. The queen is 107 inches wide overall, and the bed runs $3,099.00 to $3,449.00 by size.

That queen Belmont needs close to 9 feet of wall. In return the bedside surfaces cost no floor space at all, which is the point in a tight room.

Floating shelves in place of a bedside table

A floating shelf is a wall-mounted shelf whose brackets hide inside it. Merit's website doesn't list them, and a hardware store will have several depths. I'd set one at about mattress-top height and screw it into studs, or into anchors rated for the load. A wall light frees the whole shelf for a phone and a book. Berk's guide puts a sconce 22 to 27 inches above where a nightstand top would sit. A shelf has no drawer, so a lidded box on it does the hiding.

Where bedside table decor goes wrong

No clear spot for the glass. A top covered edge to edge means the water goes on the frame or the floor, and something gets knocked over in the dark.

A lamp out of scale. A big shade on a 17-inch mini overhangs the edge. A small lamp on a 25-inch top looks lost and lights very little.

Wet glasses on bare wood. Solid wood and acacia tops can mark under a sweating glass, so a coaster belongs in the decor.

A drawer that becomes the junk drawer. Once receipts and dead batteries move in, the nightly things end up on top again.

Seeing bedside tables at Merit's Duncan store

The Duncan store has display models, and most Duncan sales are custom orders. A call first tells you which nightstands are set up; the LH Home listings say both are on display in Duncan. An Ashley order takes 4 to 6 weeks and a Mako one 8 to 10, and either is then ready for pickup or delivery. Bring the width of the wall and the bed's overall width, and nobody will rush you.

Delivery from Duncan costs $150 across the Island with assembly included, and picking up at the store costs nothing. Some Gulf Islands can be reached too, and the Duncan store has the details. Pieces carried at Campbell River or Port Alberni come with that store's own delivery terms. You can line up the widths of all 48 nightstands we list on one page. For the rest of the room there are our bedroom guides beyond the nightstand, including choosing a dresser to go with the nightstands.
