For a feng shui bedroom, I'd start with the bed: placed so you can see the door from the pillow, with a solid headboard against a solid wall. Then I'd leave room for a nightstand on each side. Most of what practitioners recommend is about furniture and floor space, which is the part a furniture store can speak to.
Feng shui is a Chinese practice of arranging a home so that qi, which its practitioners describe as life force energy, moves through each room in a balanced way. I'm not a feng shui consultant, and nothing here is a promise about sleep, health or luck.
Beds and nightstands are my trade at Merit Home Furniture in Duncan, so I've set the practitioners' advice beside the bedroom pieces we list on Vancouver Island. Where a rule touches something measurable, I've added the numbers from Merit's own listings.
What is a feng shui bedroom, and who writes the rules?
A feng shui bedroom is a bedroom arranged to be restful by feng shui's own measure: uncluttered, balanced on both sides, with the bed placed so the sleeper feels protected. Who writes the rules matters, because practitioners belong to different schools and don't agree on everything.
Anjie Cho is an architect and certified feng shui consultant with over 20 years of experience designing spaces. She practises and teaches BTB feng shui, and her bedroom advice starts from the layout: where the door is, what sits behind the bed, and what the sleeper can see.
P.K. Odle is executive director of the American Feng Shui Institute and works in classical feng shui. In Real Simple she describes calculations based on a building's magnetic orientation and the date it was built. She also describes an unseen grid that divides the interior width and depth by three. Where the two schools part ways, I say so.
Practitioners often tie their rules to better rest. That's their claim, and I can't confirm it. HealthLink BC's home advice for sleep problems is plainer: keep the bedroom quiet, cool and dark. If you're still awake after about 20 minutes, it suggests getting up and doing something dull in dim light. After several nights of trouble sleeping, it suggests going over your medicines with a doctor or pharmacist.
Feng shui bedroom bed position: the command position
The command position is where Cho starts on bed position, on her own blog and in The Spruce. Cho defines it as seeing the main entry to the bedroom while sitting up against the headboard, without the bed lining up directly with the door. The position to avoid has a blunt name, the coffin position, where your feet point straight out the door.
That often puts the bed on the wall diagonally across from the door. Where the room won't allow it, Cho's fix is a mirror placed so the door shows in it from the bed. If the feet still face the door, she suggests shifting the bed off that line. Failing that, she hangs a feng shui crystal halfway between the foot of the bed and the door.
The Spruce's list of bedroom don'ts adds more placement rules:
- No headboard on a wall with a toilet on the other side of it.
- No bed lined up with an ensuite bathroom door.
- No bed under low beams, soffits or a sloped ceiling, which rules out the low side of an attic room.
- No side of the bed pushed against a wall. The Spruce wants open space on three sides: left, right and foot.
- No chandelier hanging over the bed.
Windows behind the bed split the sources. The Spruce says to avoid a bed under a window where possible, while Odle accepts a closed window that lets in no drafts.
Where should I place my bed for good luck?
Feng shui's answer on placing a bed for good luck is the command position: the door in view, the bed out of line with it, a solid wall behind. Luck is the practitioners' word, not mine. My part is making sure the bed you pick fits that wall with room on both sides.
Feng shui bedroom bed placement in a small Island bedroom
Feng shui bed placement gets harder as the room shrinks, because the command position and open space on three sides both take floor. Take a bedroom 10 by 11 feet, or 120 by 132 inches, with the bed on a 10-foot wall. The table uses the outside measurements printed on Merit's listings for beds sold through our Duncan store.
| Bed and size | Outside width by length | Left on each side, at the foot |
|---|---|---|
| Mako Brandon, double | 58 by 79 in | 31 in, 53 in |
| Mako Brandon, queen | 63 by 83.5 in | 28.5 in, 48.5 in |
| Mako Decora, queen | 64 by 84 in | 28 in, 48 in |
| Mako Megan upholstered, queen | 67 by 88 in | 26.5 in, 44 in |
| Mako Megan upholstered, king | 83 by 88 in | 18.5 in, 44 in |
A queen in that room leaves a little over two feet a side, enough for a nightstand and a path past it. A king on the same wall leaves 18.5 inches a side. The narrowest nightstands we list for Duncan are eight Mako minis at 17 inches wide, so a king turns the pairs rule into a squeeze. How each frame size measures outside the mattress is set out in our guide to bed frame sizes in Canada.
The Spruce also says anything smaller than a full, which Canadians call a double, won't let chi circulate. It prefers a platform bed to a king on a split box spring. Each Mako bed listing in this guide describes a headboard, footboard, rails and slats. Ashley's listing says the Finch needs no box spring.
A room with several doors still has one main entry, and that's the door the command position is about. A room with several windows leaves fewer solid walls, so the headboard wall is often chosen by elimination. In a large bedroom, The Spruce turns to the rug, sized so the bed and nightstands sit properly on it. Where a bedroom doubles as an office, it suggests a curtain or folding screen between desk and bed.
Which direction should a bedroom face in feng shui?
Which direction a bed should face depends on the school. The Spruce says south, then puts the command position ahead of the compass. Real Simple reports less specific guidance, though some sources say south. Odle's classical method starts from the building's magnetic orientation and build date. Her "lonely pillow" direction also depends on the sleeper's date of birth and gender. So which direction is wrong for a bedroom depends on whose chart is used.
Why feng shui practitioners ask for a solid headboard
A solid headboard is the second rule practitioners agree on. Cho asks for one that's sturdy, solid and securely attached to the bed, generally upholstered or wood, and compares it to a mountain at your back. Real Simple says a solid wood frame or a solidly upholstered headboard is the choice for feng shui. It lists headboards with multiple panels or open bars, and beds with built-in shelving or storage, as ones to avoid.
Here are headboard types on beds Merit lists for Duncan, with queen prices read November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes.
| Bed | Headboard | Queen price |
|---|---|---|
| Mako Megan Upholstered Headboard Bed | Upholstered, 56 in tall | $1,599.00 |
| Mako Brandon Upholstered Low Profile Bed | Upholstered, 42 in tall | $1,099.00 |
| Mako Megan Panel Bed | Wood panel, 56 in tall | $1,549.00 |
| Mako Decora Panel Bed | Pine panel, 48 in tall | $899.00 |
| Mako Robina Upholstered Panel Bed | Three padded horizontal panels, 54 in tall | $1,349.00 |
| Mako Soho Slat Headboard Bed | Open slats, 42 in tall | $849.00 |
| Ashley Finch Queen Platform Bed | None included, 16 in tall | $189.00 |
Read against those descriptions, the two upholstered Mako beds and the wood panel beds come closest. A strict reading of Real Simple would question the Robina's three panels and the Soho's open slats. Ashley's listing says plainly that the Finch comes without a headboard. The rest come from Mako Wood Furniture, which the Province of BC describes as a furniture producer in Surrey. What Mako says about its own wood has a page of its own.
Storage beds are where the advice pulls two ways. The Spruce would rather the space under the bed stayed empty, or held soft, sleep-related things like linens and blankets. Merit lists 18 storage beds for our Duncan store, 16 of them from Mako. If a storage bed is the only way a small room holds everything, keeping its drawers for bedding stays closest to the advice.
Nightstands in pairs: width, height and balance in a feng shui bedroom
Nightstands come in pairs in a feng shui bedroom because the practice asks for balance on both sides of the bed. The Spruce suggests equal room on each side, with two nightstands and two table lamps. It says the pair needn't match, as long as they're complementary and give two partners equal space. These are nightstands Merit lists for Duncan, priced each, before applicable taxes.
| Nightstand | Width by height | Price each |
|---|---|---|
| Mako Decora 2-drawer mini | 17 by 21.5 in | $349.00 |
| Mako Natalie 2-drawer mini | 17 by 27 in | $449.00 |
| Mako Polo 3-drawer mini | 17 by 30 in | $399.00 |
| LH Home West | 19.8 by 23.62 in | $349.00 |
| Mako Decora 2-drawer | 22 by 21.5 in | $399.00 |
| Mako Saffron 2.5-drawer | 25 by 28.5 in | $849.00 |
Width decides what fits a small room, and height decides whether a pair is any use from the pillow. Our Restonic Minto mattress is 12.5 inches tall, and the Ashley Finch platform lists 16 inches high. Together they put the mattress top near 28.5 inches. A 21.5-inch Decora beside that bed would sit 7 inches low, while the Saffron would sit about level. Working out the mattress top for any frame is covered in how to match a nightstand to the bed.
Two different nightstands can still read as a pair if their tops line up. Mako's Belmont side storage bed builds floating nightstands into the headboard, though that makes the queen 107 inches wide.
Before buying anything for a feng shui bedroom, I'd sketch the room. Mark the main door, the windows, any ensuite door and the wall with plumbing behind it, then measure the wall that's left. With that sketch I can tell you which of our beds leaves room for a nightstand on each side.
Mirrors and a feng shui bedroom: where the schools disagree
Mirrors are the feng shui bedroom rule with the least agreement. Cho uses a mirror as a fix, so a bed outside the command position can still show the door. The Spruce says a mirror shouldn't face the bed, should reflect something pleasant like trees outside, and shouldn't be broken. Odle goes furthest. In Real Simple she says a feng shui bedroom should have no mirror at all, because reflected light keeps the room's energy too active.
On Vancouver Island there's a reason to keep mirrors off the bed wall that has nothing to do with qi. PreparedBC, the province's preparedness program, advises moving framed pictures and mirrors away from beds, couches and chairs. The province also says earthquakes strong enough to cause structural damage happen in B.C. about once per decade.
Both Mako mirrors here are listed as dresser mirrors. The Mako Polo mirror is 34 inches wide by 38 tall and weighs about 26 lb, at $399.00 before applicable taxes. The Brandon mirror is 39 by 34 inches, also $399.00. On a side wall, either shows the room without facing the pillow, and our notes on choosing a dresser cover the piece below it.
Clutter, electronics, colour and plants in a good feng shui bedroom
A good feng shui bedroom, by The Spruce's account, holds a comfortable bed, pleasant linens, a solid headboard and a grounding rug, and little else. Books move out, except the one you're reading. Exercise equipment goes elsewhere, because practitioners call it yang, or active, energy.
How do I attract positive energy in my bedroom?
Positive energy, in feng shui terms, comes from clearing things out more than adding them. The Spruce wants televisions, computers and phones out of the bedroom, and ties that to claims about electric and magnetic fields that I can't vouch for. HealthLink BC's advice is closer to home: try not to use a TV, computer, smartphone or tablet in bed.
On colour, The Spruce prefers beiges, creams and earthy tones, with cool blues and pale greens. Odle advises avoiding primary colours, particularly reds, purples, blues and black. Those two plainly disagree about blue. On plants, The Spruce settles on one or two.
Cho's bedroom advice ends with window coverings, ideally curtains or blinds that block light, since she counts darkness as yin, the restful side. Natural materials suit the same thinking, and every Mako piece in this guide is listed as solid wood. For bedding, Merit's Duncan store carries Health Guard and Natura, picked up free at Duncan or added to a furniture delivery.
Where feng shui bedroom advice runs into a real room
- The schools contradict each other. The mirror Cho uses as a fix is one Odle would take down.
- A small room can't always give you the command position and three open sides. I'd keep the walkway and give up the diagonal.
- Health claims are the practitioners', not mine. The Spruce links electronics to the immune system, and Odle links her grid lines to health problems. A sleep problem belongs with your doctor.
- Earthquake advice outranks decor. Nothing heavy belongs over the headboard.
- A crystal costs little. A bed too big for the wall costs a lot more, so measure first.
