To make a bed that stays neat, I'd layer it from the mattress up: a mattress protector, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, a duvet or comforter, then the pillows. Done in that order, with the flat sheet tucked in at the foot, each layer holds the next one in place. Making a bed is a matter of order more than technique.
The step most likely to go wrong is the fitted sheet, on the taller mattresses going into Vancouver Island bedrooms today. At Merit Home Furniture, 18 Restwell and Restonic mattresses are listed for our Duncan store. Of those, 16 give a height, from 12 to 16 inches, and 7 are 15 inches or taller. A euro top that thick needs a sheet with deep pockets, and the depth printed on the package is the number to check.
How to make a bed, step by step
How to make a bed comes down to six moves, from a bare mattress to the pillows. The order matters more than the technique, because each layer anchors the one above it.
- Strip the bed. Pull everything off, pillowcases included, and look over the mattress and protector while they're bare.
- Put the mattress protector on. A protector is a washable, usually waterproof layer that fits over the mattress like a fitted sheet. Its elastic skirt goes under the head corners first, then the foot. Which type does which job is in our guide to mattress protectors and the warranty fine print.
- Fit the bottom sheet. The tag or the long side seam tells the length from the width. Hook one top corner over the mattress, then the opposite bottom corner, then the last two, so the elastic sits under the mattress rather than on its side.
- Lay the flat sheet. Spread it finished side down, with the wide hem level with the head of the mattress and an even overhang on both sides. Tuck the foot under and fold the corners, as below.
- Add the duvet or comforter. Centre it so it hangs the same on each side. Fold its top edge back a hand's width, then turn the top of the flat sheet down over it to make a cuff.
- Set the pillows. Sleeping pillows go against the headboard, with any shams or cushions in front and a throw across the foot if you use one.
How do you do hospital corners on a bed?
Hospital corners are folded corners on a flat sheet that keep it tight at the foot of the bed. Start with the foot already tucked under. At one corner, lift the side edge of the sheet onto the mattress top, partway up from the foot. The hanging fabric now forms a diagonal from the corner.
Tuck the fabric still hanging below that lifted flap under the mattress. Then drop the flap back down over the side and tuck it under as well. That leaves a clean diagonal fold on the side of the mattress, like the end of a wrapped parcel. Do the other corner the same way.
Fitted sheet pocket depth and mattress height
Fitted sheet pocket depth is the deepest mattress a sheet's corners are made to wrap. It's printed on the package, and it has to reach at least the mattress height, with a little spare for the protector underneath. Our listing for the Restonic St Charles describes a euro top as an extra comfort layer stitched flush with the sides. A pillow top sits on top like a separate cushion.
Nine of the Duncan mattresses below show the range. Heights come from each Merit listing, and queen prices are before applicable taxes, as read on November 1, 2026.
| Duncan mattress | Height, top | Queen |
|---|---|---|
| Restwell Canary | 12 in., tight top | $849.00 |
| Restwell Robin | 12 1/4 in., euro top | $899.00 |
| Restonic Prestige | 13 in., euro top | $988.00 |
| Restonic Tiffany Rose and Jasmine | 13 in., tight top | $3,217.00 |
| Restonic Notte | 15 in., euro top | $1,688.00 |
| Restonic St Charles and Elizabeth | 15 in., euro top | $3,736.00 |
| Restwell Sparrow Elite | 15 1/2 in., pillow top | $1,799.00 |
| Restonic Vernazza | 16 in., euro top | $2,499.00 |
| Restonic Treviso | 16 in., euro top | $2,499.00 |
The Restonic listings say it plainly. The Tiffany Rose page notes that at 13 inches "ordinary fitted sheets still fit", and the 15-inch St Charles page warns that fitted sheets need deep pockets. Two Duncan listings, the Restwell Copper Hybrid and the Restonic Revive Marissa, give no height, so ask us before buying sheets for either.
Merit lists two Health Guard sheet sets for the Duncan store, and each listing prints its pocket depth.
| Health Guard sheets | Pocket depth | Queen |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury Microfiber | Twin, twin XL and full up to 14 in.; queen and king up to 16 in. | $59.00 |
| Bamboo Cotton | Every size up to 18 in. | $129.00 |
On paper a queen microfiber set fits every mattress above, but a 16-inch Vernazza or Treviso uses all of its depth before a protector goes on. The bamboo cotton set leaves 2 inches spare on those beds. Neither listing says whether its depth allows for a protector, so I'd count the spare inches as the protector's share.
How to fold a fitted bed sheet
Folding a fitted sheet starts with your hands inside two corners of one short end. Bring your hands together and turn one corner over the other, so one pocket nests inside its neighbour. Repeat at the other end, then lay the sheet flat and tuck the two doubled corners into each other. Fold the elastic edge in, square up the sides, and fold it in thirds both ways.
How to make a fitted bed sheet from a flat one
Making a fitted sheet from a flat sheet is a sewing job, and I sell sheets rather than sew them, so treat this as an outline. Lay the flat sheet over the mattress and mark where each corner falls. At each corner, cut out a square whose sides equal the mattress height plus enough to tuck under. Sew the two cut edges of each corner together to form a pocket, then hem the edge and thread elastic through it. On a deep euro top, the flat sheet has to be large enough to cover that depth on all four sides.
Duvet or comforter on top, and the two-duvet bed
A duvet and a comforter both go on top of the flat sheet, and the difference is the cover. A comforter is one quilted piece that goes in the wash whole. A duvet is an insert of down or synthetic fill inside a removable cover, and the cover gets washed with the sheets.
A duvet cover goes on easiest from inside out. Reach into its two far corners, grip the duvet's top corners through the fabric, and shake the cover down over it.
For couples, the Sleep Foundation describes the Scandinavian sleep method: one bed, two separate duvets. It says each should cover approximately half of the bed, and that most couples choose two twin or twin XL duvets. One person can sleep under a heavy duvet while the other has a light blanket.
Merit doesn't list duvets, comforters or blankets right now, so that layer can come from anywhere. What we list for the Duncan store is everything under it: sheets, protectors and pillows.
Can a king duvet go on a double bed?
A king duvet works on a double bed; it just hangs much further over the sides. Restwell lists its Robin at 53 by 74 inches in double and 76 by 79 in king, so a king duvet is cut for a mattress 23 inches wider. On an open bed some people like that fuller drape. Against a wall or inside a footboard, the extra bunches up.
Pillows, throws and a bed made like a hotel
Merit lists 13 Health Guard and Natura pillows for the Duncan store. Prices run from $49.00 for the Health Guard Hotel Comfort up to $249.00 for the Natura Organic Latex, before applicable taxes.
The Hotel Comfort is a queen pillow, 20 by 29 inches, in a Tencel shell. I can't tell from here which pillow suits your neck. The fold test and the questions that narrow it down are in how to pick a pillow for the way you sleep. The full list of our pillows has the rest.
Making a bed like a hotel is mostly about tension. The look comes from a flat sheet pulled tight with hospital corners, the duvet folded back with the sheet turned over it, and pillows stacked two deep. A cozy bed goes the other way: a softer sheet, a looser tuck and a folded throw at the foot.
Why make your bed every morning?
Making your bed every morning won't change how the mattress feels, but one large survey linked it with how people say they sleep. The National Sleep Foundation's 2011 Bedroom Poll was a telephone survey of 1,500 adults aged 25 to 55 in the United States. As HealthDay reported, people who made their bed every day were 19 percent more likely to say they get a good night's sleep.
That's a link people reported about themselves. It doesn't show that making the bed causes better sleep, and people who make the bed may keep other steady habits too.
The case for waiting a while is about damp. HealthLink BC says dust mites are found mostly in carpeting, bedding, pillows, mattresses and box springs, furniture and stuffed animals. Its allergy page says they do well where humidity is greater than 50%. Some people throw the covers back for a while to let the night's moisture out. I couldn't find a study that tests whether that changes mite numbers, so it's a habit rather than a treatment.
For mite allergies, HealthLink BC's advice is to wash bedding, including pillowcases and mattress covers, in hot water every week. Its file on indoor air puts the wash temperature at at least 55°C (131°F). It also lists dark spotting and staining on sheets, pillows and the mattress among the signs of bed bugs. If you sleep badly most nights however the bed is made, that's a question for your doctor. In BC, 8-1-1 reaches a HealthLink BC registered nurse, and 7-1-1 serves the deaf and hard of hearing.
How to make a bed headboard, or attach one to a frame
A headboard is the panel at the head of the bed that the pillows rest against. It stops them sliding down behind the bed, gives a back to lean on while reading, and keeps scuffs off the wall paint. Feng shui in the bedroom has its own view on headboards and bed position. The headboards Merit lists come either as part of a full bed or as a headboard only, made to bolt to a metal frame.
Attaching a headboard to a frame means bolting the frame's brackets to the headboard's legs. Ashley's Derekson listing spells it out: hardware isn't included, four bolts are needed, and their length depends on the thickness of the bed frame. The Beaudoin 961G steel frame has those brackets. Its listing says it fits full and queen box springs, stands 7.125 inches high and is rated for 650 lb. It's listed for our Duncan and Port Alberni stores, where a call gets our best price.
Set the frame up first, then stand the headboard behind it. Line the bolt holes in its legs up with the slots in the brackets, at the height that suits the mattress. Push the bolts through from the frame side, add washers and nuts, and tighten them evenly before the mattress goes on. A second pair of hands helps, since a queen Derekson weighs 62 lbs.
| Headboard | Height, build | Queen |
|---|---|---|
| Ashley Derekson | 49 in. high, engineered wood and laminate, headboard only | $306.00 |
| Ashley Landocken | 52 in. high, hardwood solids, veneer and MDF, headboard only | $468.00 |
| Mako Youth Panel | 42 in. high, solid pine, sized for the Mako Youth beds | $599.00 |
The Derekson is listed for Duncan, the Landocken for Duncan, Campbell River and Port Alberni, and the Mako for Duncan and Port Alberni. Ashley pieces take 4 to 6 weeks and Mako 8 to 10, each until it's ready for pickup or delivery. The headboards collection has the rest, and what each bed frame size measures outside helps with the room.
Making a simple bed headboard yourself
The simplest way to make a bed headboard at home is a padded panel. Cut plywood to the bed's width or a little wider and glue foam to the face. Wrap batting and fabric over it and staple them to the back. It can hang on the wall from a cleat, so it never touches the frame, which also suits a platform bed with no brackets. People lean on a headboard, so I'd want a wall-hung one screwed into the studs, not held by drywall anchors alone.
Where making a bed goes wrong
Making a bed goes wrong most often at the fitted sheet. A sheet that keeps popping off one corner is usually too shallow for the mattress plus its protector. Measure the made-up mattress, protector on, and check the package depth against it. Hospital corners on a tall euro top fail the same way, with too little flat sheet left to tuck. A larger flat sheet or a plain tuck is the fix.
Headboard bolts need the right length, and Ashley leaves that to the thickness of your frame. A headboard that isn't bolted tight will knock against the wall.
Merit's own listings have gaps. Two Duncan mattresses give no height, and neither Health Guard sheet listing says whether its pocket depth counts a protector. It's worth calling us before counting on either.
With a new mattress, I'd read its height off the listing before reusing the old sheets. Put the protector on, measure again, then pick the pocket. A sheet that fits on the first try saves a fight with the corners every laundry day.

Bed sheets, protectors and headboards from the Duncan store
The sheet sets, protectors and pillows above are listed for our Duncan store at 107 Ingram St, open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5. Health Guard's Premium Terry protector is $69.00 in queen before applicable taxes, and the protector listings run up from there. Small items like these aren't shipped. Pick them up free in Duncan, ready about 2 business days after they reach the store, or add them to a furniture or mattress delivery.
A headboard or mattress delivered from Merit's Duncan store costs $150 across the Island, set up and assembled. Old furniture can go away with the crew, usually for $25 to $50 a piece. Delivery to some Gulf Islands is possible too; the Duncan store has the details for yours.
Ask which mattresses and headboards are set up as display models before you drive in. Nobody will follow you around while you look, and going home to think it over is fine.
