Guest bedroom ideas for an Island home: the bed, the floor it needs and a guest-ready checklist

La-Z-Boy Kennedy queen sleeper sofa in a room - Merit Home Furniture

Good guest bedroom ideas start with the bed, because the bed decides how much of the room is left for everything else. At Merit Home Furniture in Duncan, on Vancouver Island, I'd settle three things first. They are how often someone stays, what the room does between visits, and how much floor sits in front of the made-up bed. The decorating comes after that, and it's the cheap part.

A guest bedroom is a spare room set up so a visitor can sleep, unpack and get dressed without borrowing your space. A guest room is often also an office, a sewing room or the place the treadmill lives. For those, a bed that folds away earns its price. For a room that sits ready all year, a regular bed and a good mattress are simpler and cost less.

Prices below are as Merit's listings showed them on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes.

What makes a good guest bedroom?

A good guest bedroom gives a visitor a comfortable bed, room to walk around it, somewhere to put a suitcase and a light they can reach from the pillow. Everything else is extra. Restonic makes some of the mattresses Merit carries in Duncan. It suggests leaving about 2 feet between the bed and the wall, so a sleeper can get out of bed comfortably. That walkway is the number I'd protect first in a small room.

The rest is a short list. A guest wants one clear drawer or a few hangers and a hook on the back of the door. Add an outlet near the bed for a phone, and a smoke alarm that works. The Province of BC's fire safety toolkit puts a smoke alarm inside every sleeping room. That includes a spare room that only sleeps someone at Christmas.

What a guest room doesn't want is everything that has nowhere else to go. Boxes, a filing cabinet, out-of-season clothes and a shelf of family collections all shrink the room. They also leave a visitor feeling they're camped in your storage. If the room has to hold things, a closed piece of bedroom furniture with doors or a lid keeps them out of sight.

Guest bedroom office ideas: choosing a bed that folds away

A guest bedroom that doubles as an office needs a bed that gives the floor back between visits. Merit lists four kinds for that job: cabinet beds, sleeper sofas, daybeds and a bed with a trundle. Bunk beds fit the same small floor when the guests are grandchildren. Each one trades something away, and the table sets out what each costs on Merit's listings for Duncan.

Ashley Realyn twin daybed $1,120.00 Sold separately
Mako Youth slide bed with trundle $1,249.00 Not mentioned on the listing

The Decor-Rest is listed for Duncan and Campbell River, the Rannis for Duncan and Port Alberni, and the rest for Duncan. Fifteen sleeper sofas in all are listed for our Duncan store. The 13 from makers other than Island Living run $799.00 to $4,395.00.

A sleeper sofa is the only one of these that's also seating, which matters if the office is where the TV lives. A cabinet bed is the only one that hides a full-length queen in a chest about 2 feet deep. A daybed or a trundle bed never folds away, so it suits a room where the desk is small and the bed stays made.

Sleepchest cabinet bed

Closed, the queen is a chest 64 inches wide and 23.25 inches deep, or 22 on the slim Midtown. Open, it reaches 80 inches from the wall on a 6-inch foam mattress, or a 5-inch one on the Midtown. Sleepchest makes that mattress a standard 60 by 80 queen, so regular sheets fit. It rates the bed to 500 pounds and warrants the cabinet for 1 year and the mattress for 5. Sleepchest's setup sheet has you open the flip top before lowering the bed, so it's a poor home for a printer.

La-Z-Boy queen sleeper sofa

The Kennedy is 69 inches wide and 38 deep by our listing, and sits like any sofa. Its queen mattress is a 5.5-inch quilted innerspring, 60 inches wide and 71.5 long, so a tall guest runs out of mattress sooner than on a regular queen. Pulled out, the bed reaches 93.5 inches from the back of the sofa. The cover is your pick from La-Z-Boy's fabrics, and the listing at $3,967.00 mentions other upgrades too.

Our walk-through of how a Sleepchest opens and what it rests on covers the mechanism and the strap that holds it to the wall. All ten models are in the cabinet bed collection, and the sofa beds sit together in our sleeper sofa listings.

Daybeds and trundle beds for a small spare room

The Ashley Realyn is a twin bed with an upholstered, tufted back, so by day it reads as a settee against the wall. It's 79 inches long and 45 deep, takes no box spring and uses a twin mattress bought on its own. The Mako Youth slide bed is solid wood from Mako, which the Province of BC describes as a furniture producer in Surrey. It's a twin with a second twin that slides out below, plus two drawers on one side. Its listing doesn't give the pulled-out width, so ask before planning the floor around it.

Twin is the size these share, and the Better Sleep Council puts a twin at 38 by 75 inches. It also says a twin "may be too short for some adults". A twin suits grandchildren, a teenager or a short stay. A queen suits two adults, or one tall one staying a week.

Small guest bedroom ideas: what size bed fits the room?

The bed that fits a small guest bedroom is the one that leaves about 2 feet clear past its open side once it's made up. For a folding bed, measure the open size and ignore the closed one. The table adds Restonic's 2-foot walkway to the open depth on Merit's listings. The last column is the room depth to look for, measured out from the wall the bed stands against.

Guest bed, made up Floor it covers Room depth with a 2 ft walkway
Sleepchest queen cabinet bed, open 64 in wide, 80 in out from the wall 104 in (8 ft 8 in)
La-Z-Boy Kennedy queen sleeper, open 69 in wide, 93.5 in out from the wall 117.5 in (9 ft 9.5 in)
Ashley Realyn twin daybed 79 in long, 45 in deep 69 in (5 ft 9 in)
Ashley Halanton twin bunk, long side to the wall 80.25 in long, 42.5 in wide 66.5 in (5 ft 6.5 in)

A spare room 10 feet deep takes any of the four, with room left over beside the daybed and the bunk. At 9 feet, the queen cabinet bed still fits with its walkway, and the Kennedy comes up short. A closet door or a radiator on the bed wall eats into those numbers, so measure from whatever sticks out furthest.

Layout in a small guest room follows a few plain rules. A twin or a double can go tight against a wall, which leaves the walkway on one side only. A queen for two adults wants a walkway on both sides, so each guest can get up without climbing over the other. Keep the bed from blocking the window, since it's the room's daylight and fresh air. Then check that the door swings fully open with the bed down. Feng shui's rules for bed placement go further, if that matters to your household.

Every Canadian mattress size in inches and centimetres is charted in another guide. For a regular bed, the extra inches a frame adds around the mattress belong in the sum too.

Small guest bedroom decorating ideas that leave room to move

Small guest bedroom decorating ideas work when every piece earns its floor. Cozy and crowded aren't the same thing. A room with a bed, one nightstand, a lamp and a hook feels settled. Add an armchair, a dresser and a bookcase, and the same room feels like overflow. I'd count the pieces before buying more of them.

Lighter walls help a small room more than a dark feature colour, because a dark wall swallows the light from a single window. That counts for more through an Island winter, when a north-facing spare room sees little sun. A pale bedspread and plain curtains do much of the same work without a paint job. One strong colour, on the wall behind the bed or in a throw, carries a small room better than several competing ones. A room built around black furniture calls for its own wall and bedding plan.

Storage for a guest is different from storage for you. Hooks on the back of the door take a coat and a bathrobe. A basket on a shelf holds spare towels and a blanket. A blanket box at the foot of the bed keeps your own spare bedding shut away, and the lid makes a place to rest a suitcase. The Mako Youth 38-inch blanket box is 18 inches high and solid pine, $549.00, listed for Duncan and Port Alberni.

Personal touches help in small doses. A framed print of the Cowichan Valley or a plant on the sill tells a visitor the room was readied for them. A wall of family photos tells them it belongs to someone else. A real plant has to be watered between visits, so a hardy one, or none, beats a dead one.

Modern guest bedroom ideas lean on plain lines and few pieces, which suits a small room anyway. The Sleepchest Caspian's listing describes a simple, modern front, and the Kennedy sleeper has narrow track arms and clean lines. The Realyn daybed goes the other way, with a scalloped, tufted back in a distressed white. Pick one look for the bed and keep the rest of the room quiet around it.

Decorating ideas for a guest bedroom on a budget: where to spend and where to save

The budget rule for a guest bedroom is to spend on what the guest lies on and save on what they look at. A guest forgives a plain nightstand. They remember a mattress that sagged or a pillow that went flat by two in the morning. Here's what the sleep side costs on Merit's Duncan listings, with two smaller pieces for scale.

Item Listing Price
Twin mattress Restonic Minto, firm euro top $698.00 (queen $888.00)
Twin mattress Restwell Robin, plush euro top $799.00 (queen $899.00)
Mattress protector Health Guard Premium Terry $49.00 twin, $69.00 queen
Pillow Health Guard Hotel Comfort, 20 by 29 in $49.00
Sheet set Health Guard Luxury Microfiber $49.00 twin, $59.00 queen
Nightstand Ashley Shawburn, 20 in wide $138.00
Blanket box Mako Youth, 38 in $549.00

The mattress is where I'd put the money. Our lowest-priced Duncan twin, the Restonic Minto, is 12.5 inches tall, sleeps firm and carries a 10-year non-prorated warranty. The Restwell Robin is the plush choice at about the same money, a euro top over a 5-zone pocket coil. Guests don't arrive with your taste in firmness, and the rest of the Restonic range runs from firm to plush too.

A protector is the cheapest item on the list, and it guards the dearest one. The Health Guard terry protector is waterproof and machine washable. What mattress warranties say about protectors and stains is worth a read before the first visitor spills a coffee. Pillows, sheets and protectors aren't shipped. They're free to pick up at Merit's Duncan store, or they ride along with a furniture or mattress delivery.

Save on the nightstand and the decor. The Ashley Shawburn nightstand has one drawer and an open cubby, enough for a lamp, a glass of water and a phone. A thrift-shop lamp, a basket and a second-hand mirror all do fine in a room someone sleeps in a few weeks a year.

From the showroom floor

If you're torn between a better guest bed and a nicer guest room, I'd buy the bed. Paint, a lamp and a picture are cheap to change later. A thin mattress gets slept on visit after visit, until someone finally gives up on it.

Preparing a guest mattress and room before holiday visitors

Preparing a guest mattress for holiday visitors starts a week out, never the night before. Open any sleeper sofa or cabinet bed all the way, lie on it for a few minutes, and check underneath for anything tucked in there since the last visit. A broken spring or a stuck mechanism is a phone call in November and a crisis on December 23.

Then work through the bed itself. Strip it, wash the protector and the sheets, and air the room with the window open if the weather allows. A spare room shut through a wet Island autumn can smell stale. Put the protector back on before the sheets, and lay a spare blanket at the foot so nobody has to ask for one at midnight.

Easter and summer visitors get the same routine. The only difference in spring is that the room may have sat closed since January, so give it an extra day of fresh air.

How far ahead should you order a guest bed?

Order a guest bed by counting back from the day your visitors arrive. Merit's lead times run by maker, and each piece is then ready for pickup or delivery. Mattresses and Sleepchest cabinet beds take 2 to 3 weeks. Ashley pieces take 4 to 6 weeks. La-Z-Boy sofas, Decor-Rest and Mako take 8 to 10 weeks. So a La-Z-Boy sleeper for Christmas guests is an early October order, while a cabinet bed or a new twin mattress can wait until November. Why each maker takes as long as it does has a guide of its own.

Delivery from our Duncan store is $150 across the Island, with setup and assembly in that price, and picking up at Duncan is free. The crew can take old furniture away at delivery, usually $25 to $50 a piece, so ask whether that covers an old guest mattress. A mattress headed far up-Island may travel another way, and the store says which when it books your time. Delivery reaches some Gulf Islands too, and the Duncan store can tell you whether yours is one.

A guest-ready checklist for overnight visitors

A guest-ready room comes down to a handful of checks the day before anyone arrives. This is the order I'd do them in, from the bed outward.

  1. Make the bed fully. Protector, fitted and flat sheet, two pillows per guest, and a spare blanket within reach.
  2. Test the smoke alarm. The Province of BC asks for every smoke alarm to be tested at least once a month and replaced when it's 10 years old. A spare room's alarm is the one people forget.
  3. Light the way. HealthLink BC's falls checklist suggests a lamp close to the bed and a night-light so you can see where you're walking. A guest doesn't know where your hallway turns at three in the morning.
  4. Clear the path. Keep the floor between the bed, the door and the bathroom clear, and tape down or lift any loose throw rug.
  5. Sort the bathroom. A guest room with its own en suite saves the hallway trip. Without one, leave towels and a spare toothbrush in the bathroom they'll use.
  6. Free up storage. One empty drawer, a few hangers and a hook on the door.
  7. Set out the small things. A glass for water, a charger at an outlet the bed can reach, and the Wi-Fi password on a card.
  8. Walk them through the house. How the heat works, which door sticks and where the light switches are, before anyone heads to bed.

Guest rooms for Island visitors arriving by ferry

Guest rooms on Vancouver Island host people who arrive by ferry or after a long drive, and that changes what the room has to handle. Visitors who bring the car over from Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay can pack far more than an airline allows. For them, a place to open a big suitcase matters more than another cushion. Foot passengers travel light, though a delayed sailing can put them on your doorstep later than planned.

A late arrival is the reason to have the bed made and a lamp on before they land. Nobody wants to wrestle a sofa bed open at eleven at night after a crossing. For visitors staying more than a few nights, a chair or a cleared corner of the desk gives them a seat that isn't the bed.

Are bunk beds safe for visiting grandchildren?

Bunk beds can be safe for visiting grandchildren when Health Canada's rules are followed, and the first rule is age. Health Canada's bunk bed page says no children under 6 years old go on the top bunk at any time, and only one person goes up at once. It asks for guardrails on all four sides of the top bunk, at least 12.7 cm (5 inches) above the mattress top. The mattress itself should fit snugly, and the bed should stand away from windows, ceiling fans and cords.

Merit lists five bunk beds for the Duncan store, all Ashley, from $818.00 to $1,199.00. The Halanton convertible twin over twin is solid wood and 61.5 inches tall, and it splits into two separate twin beds. For a guest room that also sleeps adults, that split is worth having. The others sit in our bunk bed collection, beside the ones listed only for Port Alberni.

Guest bedroom mistakes that cost a visitor a good night

  • Measuring a folding bed closed. A queen cabinet bed is 23.25 inches deep shut and 80 inches open, and only the open figure matters for the room.
  • Putting a couple on a twin daybed. A daybed sleeps one, and a trundle sleeps two only as separate beds at different heights.
  • Taking a sleeper's standard mattress on trust. La-Z-Boy's queen sleeper mattress is 5.5 inches thick, so for a guest staying a week, ask what upgrades the maker offers before you order.
  • Running the guest room as the storage room. A visitor who has to shift boxes to reach the bed feels like a burden.
  • Parking things on a cabinet bed's lid. Whatever sits on top comes off before the bed opens, every single visit.
  • Ordering a made-to-order sleeper for guests due next month. At 8 to 10 weeks, it won't be there.
  • Letting a grandchild under 6 sleep up top. Health Canada's answer is no, at any time.

Planning a guest room with our Duncan store

Bring Merit three numbers: the room's depth from the wall the bed will stand against, the width of the bedroom door, and how many nights a year someone sleeps there. With those, we can rule beds in or out before you look at a single fabric. Call ahead to ask which cabinet beds, sleepers and daybeds are set up at the Duncan store on Ingram Street, open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5. Nobody will follow you around while you open and close them.
