Minimalist living room ideas: fewer, better pieces, closed storage and the Duncan furniture that fits the look

Decor-Rest 3855 leather sofa on square wood legs, front view - Merit Home Furniture

A minimalist living room keeps only the furniture the room uses every day, and I'd start by counting the pieces you actually use, then buying fewer and better ones. In practice that means one sofa with clean lines, a chair or two, one table and a closed cabinet that takes the remotes, cables and games out of sight.

Minimalism in a living room means enough empty floor and wall around each piece for it to be seen. On Vancouver Island, that's a furniture question before it's a decorating one. The sofa sets the shape of the room, so its arms, legs and height matter more than its cushions.

The pieces Merit lists for our Duncan store that suit the look are named section by section. Measurements are the makers', and prices are before applicable taxes, as listed on November 1, 2026. I've also folded in an old question from our old blog: can too many accessories create clutter?

What makes a living room minimalist?

A living room reads as minimalist when four things line up: few pieces, simple lines, a calm colour palette and clear surfaces. The furniture is low and plain-sided, the floor shows around it, and most of what you own sits behind doors or in drawers. Wood, wool, linen and leather do the work that ornaments do in a busier room.

These are the traits I'd check a room against:

  • Neutral colours: white, beige, grey, oatmeal and warm wood, with one darker tone to anchor the room.
  • Simple lines: slim or squared arms, flat backs, and legs that lift the frame off the floor.
  • Furniture with two jobs, such as a coffee table with drawers or a media unit with cupboards.
  • Clear surfaces, so the TV stand holds the TV and little else.
  • Few decorative pieces, each chosen on purpose.
  • Natural materials and textures, so a plain room doesn't feel cold.
  • Daylight left alone, with no heavy drapes and nothing tall across a window.

Island winters are grey and the days are short, so a pale, uncluttered room makes more of the daylight that comes in.

Minimalist living room furniture: fewer, better pieces

Fewer, better pieces is the whole idea behind minimalist living room furniture. For most rooms that comes to a sofa, one or two chairs, a coffee table and one storage piece for the TV wall. Side tables, a second sofa, an ottoman and a bookcase are optional, and each one has to earn its floor space, above all in a small living room.

"Better" is mostly about what a photo can't show. On the Decor-Rest sofas we list, the seat sits on sinuous springs with 1.9 lb standard seat foam, and firmer foam is an option. The Island Living made-to-order sofas list a 1 1/8 in. kiln-dried solid wood frame, stapled, glued and corner blocked. That build decides whether a plain sofa still looks crisp in ten years. The La-Z-Boy Paxton listing also includes La-Z-Boy's limited lifetime warranty.

A pared-back room also shows every flaw, so a sagging seat or a scuffed leg is the first thing anyone notices.

Clean-lined living room sofas on exposed legs

A clean-lined sofa for a minimalist room has slim or track arms, a tight or simple back, and legs you can see. Track arms are straight, squared arms that sit flush with the front of the seat. Exposed legs lift the frame off the floor, so light passes under it and the sofa looks lighter than its width suggests.

Ashley Bixler sofa in olive fabric on tapered legs - Merit Home Furniture

These Duncan listings describe clean lines, track arms or show legs. Prices are before applicable taxes, and a range means the price changes with the cover.

Sofa Size (W x D x H) Price
Ashley Bixler 79 x 38 x 37 in., tapered legs $1,066 to $1,078
Ashley Altari 85 x 38 x 37 in., track arms $935 to $1,026
Ashley Navi 89 x 38 x 39 in., track arms $549 to $999
Ashley Maggie loveseat 70 x 40 x 37 in., exposed feet $1,215
Decor-Rest 3855, leather 79 x 38 x 36 in., square wood legs $2,899
La-Z-Boy Kennedy, apartment size 69 x 38 x 39 in., narrow track arms $3,013
La-Z-Boy Paxton 88 x 42 x 38 in., low-profile wood legs $3,761

The Decor-Rest 3855 is the plainest of the group: three semi-attached back cushions over three box seats, on 3 in. square wood legs. Merit lists it as a display model at Duncan. The same style is made at 86 and 94 inches, and in fabric as style 2855. If you're weighing the two covers, how leather and fabric hold up on the same frame has its own guide.

The Ashley Navi and Altari sit on a platform foundation instead of springs. Ashley's listings say it resists sagging three times better than a spring system after 20,000 testing cycles, which is the maker's test, not ours. The seat heights and depths across our range are laid out in the sofa dimensions we measured from our listings.

Our Island Living line, sold through the Duncan store, has mid-century shapes that suit this look. The Cowichan sofa sits on a walnut-finish wood base at 85 by 38 by 35 inches. The Tofino lists 17 pieces, from an armless chair to a chaise return, on espresso legs as standard. Call Duncan for Island Living prices. The way Island Living builds each sofa to order is explained in full.

From the showroom floor

If you're paring a living room back, I'd pick the sofa first and leave the rest until it's home. The sofa decides the colour, the height of the room and how much floor is left. The table and chairs are far easier to choose once you can stand next to it.

Closed storage that keeps a minimalist room clear: TV stands and media cabinets

Closed storage is what keeps a minimalist living room minimal. Drawers and solid doors hide the router, the game controllers and the chargers that open shelves put on show. A long, low TV stand also gives the wall one clear horizontal line, which suits a room built on simple lines.

Ashley Zadilyn 72 inch TV stand with four drawers in a warm brown walnut-grain finish - Merit Home Furniture

Three listed for Duncan, with the storage each listing describes:

Piece Size and storage Price
Ashley Zadilyn 72 in. 72.01 x 19.72 x 22.56 in.; 4 drawers, adjustable centre shelf $799
LH Home Irish Coast media unit 47 x 17 x 24 in.; 3 drawers, 2 cupboards, open shelves $1,099
Ashley Dorrinson 60 in. 60 x 18 x 28 in.; 2 glass-front doors, adjustable shelving $549

The Zadilyn is the most closed of the three. Its four drawers are lined in a faux linen laminate, the centre media opening is 32 in. wide, and its listing calls the walnut-grain finish mid-century style. The Zadilyn and Irish Coast listings both say they're on display at our Duncan store. The Irish Coast is FSC-certified reclaimed pine with cable holes, and it needs no assembly. The Dorrinson's doors are glass, so whatever sits behind them stays in view. For a hidden look, drawers and solid doors do better.

Whatever stand you choose, Health Canada's tip-over advice applies to it. The department suggests securing a flat-screen TV to the wall if possible. With a stand, it says to attach the TV "to the stand and the wall if possible". For other furniture it suggests anti-tip devices such as angle braces or safety straps, secured to a wall stud or with heavy-duty drywall anchors. That matters most in a home where small children climb.

Merit's full range of TV stands and media units has more styles, some of them carried at our other stores.

Coffee tables and accent chairs for a modern minimalist living room

A modern minimalist living room usually pairs one plain coffee table with one or two chairs on show legs. The table needs a top that's easy to keep clear and, ideally, somewhere to put things away.

Coffee table Size and build Price
LH Home Haru, round 39 in. across, 15.7 in. high; acacia, curved panel legs $749
LH Home Allure 47 x 23.6 x 18 in.; acacia base, black marble top $599
Ashley Flangren 52 x 32 x 18 in.; thick oak veneer, open lower shelf $649
Ashley Hanneforth 44 x 44 x 19 in.; mango wood, angled black legs $516
Mako Brandon 50 x 24 x 18 in.; solid wood, 2 drawers $949

The Mako Brandon is the one with closed storage: two drawers on full-extension glides, in solid wood, according to its listing. The Haru and the Allure are both listed as on display at our Duncan store.

Minimalist accent chairs on show legs

Monarch Specialties armless accent chair in light brown fabric on walnut legs - Merit Home Furniture
Chair Size (W x D x H) Price
Monarch armless accent chair 25.25 x 27 x 32.75 in. $349
Ashley Bixler showood chair 25 x 31 x 34 in. $414
La-Z-Boy Reegan high leg swivel 30 x 35 x 36.5 in. $1,505 to $1,679

The Monarch chair is armless, with a curved back on walnut-finish solid wood legs and a 19 in. seat height. It comes in light brown and in a green fabric. The Reegan turns a full 360 degrees on tall tapered wood legs, handy when one chair has to face both the sofa and a window. Merit's Island Living Goldstream accent chair has an exposed dark walnut frame. It measures 32 by 27 by 29 inches; call the store for its price. The rest are in our chair collection.

Minimalist living room decor: negative space and one focal point

Minimalist living room decor starts with what you leave out. Negative space, the empty wall and floor between things, is part of the design. It's what lets a plain sofa look deliberate instead of bare. A good habit is one wall left completely empty, and a coffee table top with a single object on it.

One focal point is enough. Usually that's the TV wall, a fireplace or a window with a view. If the TV is the focal point, a long low stand under it and nothing tall beside it keeps the wall calm. If it's a window, furniture stays below the sill and the view does the work.

Colour does most of the decorating in a minimal room. A beige minimalist living room uses sand, oatmeal and warm wood. A white minimalist living room leans on texture, such as bouclé, linen or a wool throw, so it doesn't feel clinical. Glass, in a tabletop or cabinet doors, keeps a room looking light. A contemporary minimalist room adds one dark accent, like black legs or the Allure's black marble top.

Wood slat panels and slat room dividers are a popular backdrop for this look, but they're a renovation job rather than furniture. For a softer, dreamier version, layer textures instead of objects: a heavier throw, linen curtains. Our website doesn't list rugs or lamps at the moment, so ask the Duncan store what's in.

Can too many accessories create clutter in a living room?

Yes, too many accessories can create clutter, and brain research offers one reason why. A 2011 Princeton Neuroscience Institute study in the Journal of Neuroscience found that several things in view at once "compete for neural representation" in the visual cortex. Put plainly, a crowded shelf asks more of the eye than a sparse one. The study used images on a screen, not living rooms, so treat it as a hint rather than proof.

A 2010 UCLA study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin looked at homes more directly. Researchers counted the words 60 dual-income spouses used on recorded tours of their own homes. Wives who described their homes with more clutter and unfinished-project words had flatter daily cortisol patterns and more depressed mood across the day. It was a small study, and it measured how people talked about their homes rather than how much they owned. If clutter or stress is weighing on you, your doctor is a good person to raise it with.

Accessories turn into clutter when they stop having a job, and a room with Merit's closed storage still fills up if every surface carries something. Here's how I'd edit a living room's accessories:

  1. Clear every surface. Take each ornament, frame and basket off the shelves and tables and set them on the dining table.
  2. Put back what gets used. The remote tray, the reading lamp, the coasters.
  3. Add back what you love. A couple of things per surface, with room around them.
  4. Box the rest for a month. Whatever you didn't miss can go to a friend or a thrift shop.
  5. Give the cables and chargers a drawer. That's the job the closed storage is there for.

Scandinavian and Japandi influences on the minimalist living room

Scandinavian and Japanese design are the two traditions behind most minimalist living rooms you see today. The Danish Architecture Center (DAC) describes Japandi as a style that combines the two. It quotes Jens Sejrup, an associate professor of Japanese studies at the University of Copenhagen. He calls Japandi "a fusion of Scandinavian functionalism and Japanese minimalism", and adds that the term first emerged in the mid-2010s. The link is far older: the architect Finn Juhl designed his Japan furniture series in 1957, with a chair on gently tapered legs.

Sejrup sees Japandi as a move away from clutter and decoration, with the focus on quality, materials, nature and neutral colours. To my eye, a minimalist Scandinavian living room runs lighter and softer, with blond wood, white walls and a wool throw. Japandi tends to sit darker and lower, with walnut tones and more empty floor.

On Merit's listings, the sand-washed Haru table and the Monarch chair on walnut legs lean Scandinavian. The Zadilyn's walnut grain and the Allure's black marble top lean toward Japandi.

Mid-century, boho and cozy minimalist living rooms

A minimalist mid century modern living room borrows the tapered legs and low, linear profiles of mid-century furniture. The Bixler sofa and chair, the Allure table and the Island Living Cowichan sofa all call themselves mid-century in their listings. A minimalist modern boho living room keeps the same plain furniture and adds woven texture, plants and one patterned cushion. A warm, cozy minimalist living room swaps cool greys for wood, cream and rust. It also picks a sofa deep enough to curl up on, like the La-Z-Boy Paxton with its 25 in. seat depth.

When a minimalist living room is the wrong fit

  • A house full of toddlers and toys. Closed storage helps, but a room with nothing on the floor won't last the afternoon. In a living room shared with young kids, a toy drawer is more realistic than an empty room.
  • Low seats for stiff knees. A low-profile sofa looks good and can be hard to get up from. The Paxton's seat is 20.5 in. high and the Decor-Rest 3855's is 19 in., so it's worth checking against your own knee height first.
  • Pale fabric with pets or a wood stove. White and oatmeal show hair and soot, and a darker weave or leather may suit the house better.
  • Glass-front cabinets bought as closed storage. The clutter is still on show.

Clearing out the living room: delivery and haul-away from Duncan

Going minimalist usually means more furniture leaves the house than arrives. From our Duncan store, Merit can take your old furniture away when we deliver, usually for $25 to $50 a piece and sometimes included. Delivery across the Island from Duncan is $150 with assembly, and picking up at the Duncan store costs nothing. Delivery to some Gulf Islands is possible too; ask the Duncan store.

Lead times depend on the maker. Ashley pieces take 4 to 6 weeks, and Decor-Rest, Mako and La-Z-Boy sofas take 8 to 10 weeks, then each is ready for pickup or delivery. Before ordering a long sofa for an older home, it's worth checking the doorway and hall; measuring the route a sofa takes into the house covers how. The rest is set out in the delivery and setup terms we publish.
