Coffee table size starts with three numbers, and I'd take all of them from the sofa you already own. Length runs about two-thirds of the sofa. Height sits level with the seat cushion or up to 2 inches below it, and the front edge lands 14 to 18 inches from the seats. Shape, storage and material come after those, and each one can nudge the numbers a little.
A coffee table is a low table set in front of a sofa, at roughly seat height, that keeps drinks, books and remotes within reach of everyone sitting down. At Merit Home Furniture in Duncan, our coffee and end tables collection lists 48 coffee tables and coffee table sets for the Duncan store. They run from $324.00 to $1,449.00 before applicable taxes. Three of them don't print a size yet, and one is a small nesting pair, which leaves 44 with measurements to compare.
What size coffee table do I need for my sofa?
The size of coffee table a sofa needs starts with the sofa's length, measured arm to arm. Dimensions.com, a reference library of drawn furniture sizes, sizes a coffee table at roughly two-thirds the length of the closest couch. Apartment Therapy's living room measurements give a wider window, half to two-thirds of the sofa. Emily Henderson's design team uses the same pair: at least half the sofa's length and no more than about two-thirds.
That pair is what people mean by the 2/3 rule for coffee tables. Two-thirds is the upper end, and half is the smallest table that still looks like it belongs to the sofa. Anywhere between the two works, and the room usually decides which end you land on.
Measuring in this order saves a second trip:
- Measure the sofa's full length. Run the tape from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other, then multiply by two-thirds and by one half. If the sofa isn't bought yet, do the sum for each of the sofas and sectionals on your shortlist.
- Measure the seat height. Press the tape to the top of the seat cushion, front edge, straight down to the floor.
- Measure the open floor in front. Go from the front of the seat cushion to the TV stand, the wall or the path people walk.
- Take off the gaps. Allow 14 to 18 inches for legroom, then a walkway beyond the table, and what's left is the deepest table that fits.
- Note what reclines or pulls out. A footrest, a sleeper or a chaise changes the floor plan, so add those numbers to the list.
What size coffee table for an 84 inch sofa?
An 84-inch sofa suits a coffee table between 42 and 56 inches long, half to two-thirds of its length. Two of the three longest coffee tables Merit lists for Duncan sit right at the top of that range. The Ashley Kristiland is 55 inches long and 30 deep, at $629.00, and the Ashley Cabalynn is 56 by 30 inches, at $548.00.
Coffee table size by sofa length, matched to tables we list for Duncan
Here is the half-to-two-thirds window for five common sofa lengths. The right-hand column names Merit's Duncan listings inside each window, priced November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes.
| Sofa length | Table length, half to two-thirds | Duncan listings in that window |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in loveseat | 30 to 40 in | 36 in square Ashley Valebeck lift-top, $699.00; 40 in round Fawndell set with two end tables, $544.00 |
| 72 in | 36 to 48 in | Ashley Hattney, 48 in, $324.00; LH Home Allure, 47 in, $599.00 |
| 84 in | 42 to 56 in | Ashley Kristiland, 55 in, $629.00; Ashley Cabalynn, 56 in, $548.00 |
| 90 in | 45 to 60 in | Ashley Cariton, 56 by 42 in, $461.00; Mako Pecan, 52 in, $1,349.00 |
| 96 in | 48 to 64 in | The 48 to 56 in tables above; nothing we list for Duncan is longer than 56 in |
Sofa lengths at Merit cluster in the middle rows. Our sofa measurements guide counted 133 sofas with a median width of 85 inches. The sofa in the middle of our range takes a table about 42.5 to 57 inches long. A 40-inch coffee table is two-thirds of a 60-inch loveseat and half of an 80-inch sofa. In front of anything longer, a 40-inch table reads as small, though a pair of them side by side can work.
Average coffee table size and the standard size of a coffee table
The standard size of a coffee table is a range, because the length follows the sofa. Dimensions.com gives coffee table lengths from 30 to 90 inches (76 to 229 cm) and heights from 10 to 18 inches (25 to 46 cm).
The average coffee table size on Merit's own Duncan listings shows the narrower band. Of the 44 coffee tables that print their size, 24 are rectangles or ovals and 20 are round or square. The figures below count every one of them, read from the spec tables on November 1, 2026.
| Measurement | Merit's 44 Duncan coffee tables |
|---|---|
| Length, rectangles and ovals | 46 to 56 in, median 49.25 in |
| Depth, rectangles and ovals | 23.6 to 42 in, median 28 in |
| Across, rounds and squares | 36 to 48 in |
| Height, all 44 | 15.7 to 20.13 in, median 18 in |
| Exactly 18 in tall | 21 of the 44 |
| Price, all 48 listed for Duncan | $324.00 to $1,449.00 |
So a typical coffee table, going by what we list, is a rectangle about 48 to 50 inches long, 26 to 30 inches deep and 18 inches tall. In metric that's roughly 125 by 70 cm and 46 cm high. Round and square tables run smaller, mostly 36 to 44 inches across, because they don't have to cover a long run of cushions.
How tall should a coffee table be next to your sofa seat?
A coffee table should be roughly the height of the sofa seat or a little lower. Dimensions.com puts it at about the same height as the adjacent couch, or 2 inches lower. Apartment Therapy allows more play, keeping the table within 4 inches of the seat height in either direction.
Seat heights on the 73 sofas measured in our sofa guide run 17 to 22 inches, with a median of 19. For that typical 19-inch seat, the table to look for is 17 to 19 inches tall, and 35 of our 44 Duncan coffee tables fall in that band.
| Height | How many of the 44 | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Under 17 in | 3 | LH Home Haru, 15.7 in; Ashley Dontayne, 16 in; Ashley Brazburn, 16.88 in |
| 17 to just under 19 in | 27 | Most of the list, including 21 tables at 18 in |
| 19 in and up | 14 | Mako Pecan, 19 in; Ashley Realyn oval, 20 in; Carynhurst set, 20.13 in |
Those 14 taller tables sit above the 10 to 18 inch range Dimensions.com gives, which matters little next to a taller sofa. The La-Z-Boy Olson listed for Duncan has a 22-inch seat, so a 20-inch table is still 2 inches below it.
End tables, the other half of an occasional table set, follow the sofa's arm rather than its seat. Apartment Therapy puts an end table no lower than the seat, and ideally about 3 inches below the arm. Arm heights on the sofas in our guide run 24 to 29 inches, median 26, which points to an end table near 23 inches. The Raebecki set pairs a 19.25-inch coffee table with two 24-inch end tables, at $596.00.
Is a 15 inch coffee table too short?
A 15-inch coffee table is short for most sofas, though not wrong for all of them. Next to a 19-inch seat it sits 4 inches down, at the edge of Apartment Therapy's window and past the 2 inches Dimensions.com allows. Beside a low sofa with a 17-inch seat it's only 2 inches under, which suits a lounging, feet-up room. The lowest table we list for Duncan, the LH Home Haru, is 15.7 inches tall and 39 inches round, at $749.00.
Is 50 cm too high for a coffee table?
Fifty centimetres works out to about 19.7 inches, which is tall for a coffee table but right for a tall sofa. With a 20 to 22 inch seat, a 50 cm table lands level with the cushion or just below it. In front of a 17-inch seat it stands nearly 3 inches above the cushion, and to my eye a top above the seat looks like a barrier. Four of Merit's Duncan tables are 20 inches or taller.
Before choosing between two sizes, I'd mark both on the floor with painter's tape and live with the outlines for a few days. Walk past them with a laundry basket, sit down with a coffee, put your feet up. The tape costs nothing and tells you more than a photo of the room will.
How far a coffee table sits from the sofa, and what changes with recliners
A coffee table belongs about 14 to 18 inches from the front of the sofa seat. Apartment Therapy calls that range the general rule of thumb, a balance between reach and legroom. Closer than 14 inches and knees start to bump the edge. Past 18 inches, setting a drink down becomes a lean.
The other sides of the table need more space, because people walk there. Apartment Therapy suggests 30 to 36 inches for a walkway between pieces. Dimensions.com recommends a clearance zone of 24 to 30 inches around a coffee table's perimeter. Here's how that adds up in front of a Merit sofa:
- The Ashley Barnsana power reclining sofa is 41 inches deep.
- A 16-inch gap to the table sits in the middle of the 14 to 18 inch range.
- The Ashley Kristiland coffee table is 30 inches deep.
- A 30-inch walkway past the table is the low end of Apartment Therapy's range.
That's 117 inches, just under 10 feet, from the wall behind the sofa to the TV stand.
Lift-top coffee tables in front of a reclining sofa
A reclining sofa breaks the 14 to 18 inch rule, because the footrests swing out over that gap. The Barnsana's listing gives 41 inches of depth upright and 67 inches fully reclined, so its footrests reach 26 inches past the front. Its back needs only 3 inches from the wall. At $1,642.00 before applicable taxes, it's a fair example of a power recliner that hugs the wall and grows forward.
With a recliner, the table has to start beyond the footrests, which leaves it out of easy reach. A lift-top coffee table is one answer: the top rises and comes toward you, so the surface reaches the seat even with the table set farther out. Our reclining loveseat guide sets out how far several models open.
Round, square, rectangular or oval: coffee table shape for the room
Coffee table shape follows the seating more than the decor. Emily Henderson's team suggests a rectangle in front of a standard sofa, or a long sofa with a chaise, so every seat reaches the table. They point to a round table where space is tight, and to a square one for a large sectional or a sofa with a couple of chairs. They also treat rectangles and ovals as near swaps, and rounds and squares the same way.
Round coffee table
A round table has no corners to catch a shin, and people can walk around it from any side. It suits a short sofa, a pair of chairs or the corner of a sectional. On a long sofa, the people at each end can't reach it.
Rectangular coffee table
A rectangle covers the full run of a sofa, so the end seats get a surface too. Its corners stick out into the walkway, and an oval softens that.
Merit's Duncan listings break down by shape like this:
| Shape | Duncan listings, size and price |
|---|---|
| Round | LH Home Haru, 39 in, $749.00; Ashley Brazburn, 42 in on casters, $397.00; Ashley Dyonton, 43.38 in on casters, $445.00; Steenlage set, 48 in with a nesting end table, $597.00 |
| Square | Ashley Carynhurst, 36 in, $749.00; Ashley Wystfield, 36 in, $799.00; Ashley Valebeck lift-top, 36 in, $699.00 |
| Rectangular | Ashley Drewing, 48.5 by 24.5 in, $355.00; Ashley Kristiland, 55 by 30 in, $629.00; Mako Brandon, 50 by 24 in, $949.00 |
| Oval | Ashley Realyn, 48 by 34 in, $594.00 |
Coffee table size for a sectional, a studio or a narrow room
A sectional with a chaise changes which length the table follows. Emily Henderson's team applies the half-to-two-thirds rule to the straight run of seats, not the whole sectional, when the table sits inside the L. A sectional whose sofa side measures 84 inches still takes a 42 to 56 inch table, however long the chaise is.
Inside the corner of an L, a square or round table is the easier fit. Merit lists six 42-inch round or square tables for Duncan, including the Ashley Hadonna drum table with a faux stone top, at $1,199.00. Ashley pitches the 56 by 42 inch Cariton at large sectionals. For the floor around the sectional itself, our guide to sectionals in small rooms works through the clearances.
In a studio or a narrow living room, a smaller table or one that splits in two keeps the floor flexible. The Ashley Reidport is a nesting pair in solid mango wood, the larger 26.5 inches across and 19.13 inches tall, at $514.00.
Lift-top and storage coffee tables listed for Duncan
A lift-top coffee table has a top that rises on a lift mechanism and moves toward the sofa, bringing a laptop or a plate up near eating height. Merit lists ten lift-tops for Duncan. Merit lists ten lift-tops for Duncan. Their listed heights are for the top closed, and the Ashley listings don't say how high the top rises, so ask us if that number matters to you.
| Lift-top table | Width x depth x height | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Ashley Carlibrie | 48 x 26 x 17 in | $572.00 |
| Ashley Rosswain | 54 x 28 x 18 in | $629.00 |
| Ashley Valebeck | 36 x 36 x 18 in | $699.00 |
| Ashley Darborn | 36 x 36 x 19 in | $746.00 |
| Ashley Realyn lift-top | 47 x 28 x 18 in | $749.00 |
| Ashley Moriville | 36 x 36 x 18 in | $750.00 |
| Ashley Drazmine | 46 x 26 x 20 in | $949.00 |
| Ashley Tyler Creek | 46 x 26 x 20 in | $1,045.00 |
| Ashley Carynhurst lift-top | 52 x 28 x 18 in | $1,099.00 |
| Mako Dexter, maple | Measured on request from the Duncan display model | $1,449.00 |
Storage without a lift takes a few forms on our Duncan listings. The Ashley Breckington opens like a trunk for blankets, at 46 by 32 by 18 inches and $690.00. The square Carynhurst and Wystfield have two hinged lids over a storage well. The Mako Brandon has two drawers on full-extension glides, and the Ashley Boardernest hides four stools on casters underneath, at $782.00. Higher seats follow other rules, like stools sized for a counter or bar.
Lift-tops are heavy. The Rosswain's listing gives 131 lbs and the Darborn's 127 lbs. From the Duncan store, our $150 Island delivery includes assembly, and pickup at Duncan is free. Ashley tables are ready in 4 to 6 weeks and Mako pieces in 8 to 10, according to our published delivery lead times.
Coffee table materials, kids and pets in an Island home
A coffee table's material decides how it handles spills, heat and a dog's tail more than how it looks in the first month. The Canadian Conservation Institute, a Government of Canada heritage lab, explains that wood swells when the air gets damp and shrinks as it dries. Those swings can split wood and damage its finish, and the institute adds that water spills leave cloudy white patches. The same rings turn up under a vase, so a wood top wants a mat beneath any dining table centrepiece that holds water. It advises keeping wood furniture away from "fireplaces or baseboard heaters, or over heat vents". In a damp Island winter, that rules out the spot beside a wood stove or a baseboard heater.
The Duncan listings name these materials:
- Solid wood: the Mako Brandon, from Mako Wood Furniture, which the Province of BC describes as a furniture producer in Surrey.
- Wood veneer over engineered wood, with solid wood parts, on most of the Ashley tables.
- Faux marble or faux stone patterns in melamine laminate, on tables such as the Ashley Camdill and the Hadonna.
- Real black marble, 0.78 inches thick, on the LH Home Allure, which weighs 130 lbs and is rated for 300 lbs.
- All metal, on the Ashley Hattney, with lockable casters.
None of the 48 coffee tables listed for Duncan has a glass top. For a house with small children, the Cabalynn and Breckington listings both mention softly rounded corners, and a round table has no corners at all. Casters help on carpet, but on a hardwood floor a curious toddler can push the table around unless the casters lock. Weight ratings matter if anyone sits or stands on the table: the LH Home Haru, for one, is rated for 112 lbs.
Many of Ashley's coffee table listings give a one-year warranty. Whoever makes the table, Merit backs the maker's warranty, orders the parts and does the repairs. Our delivery-day measuring checklist covers getting a heavy table through the door.
Where coffee table sizing rules let you down
- A long sofa with nothing to match it. At 96 inches or more, two-thirds is about 64 inches, and the longest coffee table we list for Duncan is 56. A pair of square tables side by side is one workaround.
- Recliner footrests. The 14 to 18 inch gap assumes a fixed sofa, and a reclining one can reach 26 inches past its front edge.
- Heights read from a lift-top listing. They're for the top closed, so the open height is a separate question for us.
- A table rated for decor, used as a step stool. The Haru's 112 lb rating is fine for books and plates, and not for an adult kneeling on it.
