Hygge decorating: what the Danish word means, candlelight done safely, and the wood, wool and seats that make a room feel warm

LH Home Irish Coast reclaimed pine extension dining table - Merit Home Furniture

Hygge decorating means setting a room up for slow, warm evenings: low light, wood and wool, a chair that holds you, and space at the table for people you like. I'd start with a few candles lit safely, natural materials, one corner for reading and a living room arranged for talking, and most of that costs nothing.

Hygge, said "hoo-gah", is the Danish word for a feeling of cosy, safe contentment. The decorating follows from that feeling, not from a shopping list. The furniture part is smaller than the magazines suggest. What you need is a deep chair, a sofa or sectional you can sink into, a solid wood table, and somewhere to put things away at night. At Merit Home Furniture in Duncan, the Vancouver Island winter makes a good case for it.

What is hygge, and where does the word come from?

Hygge is a Danish idea of comfortable, unhurried togetherness, and every good definition puts people ahead of objects. The Cambridge Dictionary calls it "a Danish word for a quality of cosiness" that comes from simple things like lighting candles, baking or spending time at home with family. VisitDenmark, the national tourism board, says it translates roughly as cosiness but means more. In its telling, hygge is a warm atmosphere and the good things in life enjoyed with good people.

The word is older than the trend. VisitDenmark traces it to old Norwegian, where it meant something like well-being, and says it entered Danish writing near the end of the 18th century. Denmark's official site, denmark.dk, adds that a similar Old Norse word meant protected from the outside world. The Oxford English Dictionary's earliest English quotation dates from 1960, in a line about Danish farmers.

The person most linked with hygge outside Denmark is Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute. The institute is an independent think tank that studies why some societies are happier than others. It describes his Little Book of Hygge as a million-copy bestseller.

Hygge and Danish happiness: what the World Happiness Report 2026 shows

Denmark ranks third of 147 countries in the World Happiness Report 2026, behind Finland and Iceland. The ranks come from the Gallup World Poll, where people rate their own lives on a ladder from 0 to 10. Each country's score is its average for 2023 to 2025. Canada is 25th, and the report notes it was 6th in 2013.

Country Rank, 2026 report Average life rating, out of 10
Finland 1 7.764
Iceland 2 7.540
Denmark 3 7.539
Sweden 5 7.255
Norway 6 7.242
Canada 25 6.741

Costa Rica fills the fourth spot. The report explains the scores with six measures: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perceptions of corruption. Candles aren't on the list. The Happiness Research Institute adds that rankings like this one rest on overall life satisfaction, one of three dimensions it studies.

VisitDenmark only goes as far as "perhaps" when it links hygge to Danish happiness, and I'd leave it there. Where the two meet is social support, the report's measure of having someone to count on. Hygge is mostly that, with a candle lit.

Hygge decorating starts with candlelight and low lamps

Light is the first job in hygge decorating, because the Danish habit grew out of winter dark. VisitDenmark says Danes meet their long, dark winters with hygge and the millions of candles that go with it. The aim is several small pools of light near sitting height instead of one bright fixture overhead. A candle on the table, a lamp by the chair and something low on a shelf will do it.

Merit's website doesn't list lamps, rugs or candles right now. The Duncan showroom does have some rugs and lamps among its display pieces, so call the store to ask what's in. Otherwise this layer comes from your own cupboards or a local shop.

Safe candles for a hygge evening, from Health Canada

Health Canada estimates nearly 800 candle fires a year in Canada, using 1999 to 2008 figures from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and BC. Its tips are short:

  • Trim the wick to 5 to 7 mm before lighting, and again every 2 to 3 hours.
  • Use a sturdy holder that won't tip. Health Canada warns against wooden or plastic holders, which can catch fire.
  • Keep burning candles away from things that can catch fire. Its list names curtains, decorations and clothing, along with upholstered furniture, bedding and mattresses.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets, don't leave one burning in an empty room, and put them all out before bed.

For a hygge evening, that means candles on a plate or tray in the middle of the table, not tucked beside a sofa arm or under a shelf. Battery candles give a similar glow on a windowsill near curtains, or in a house with a curious cat.

Natural wood, wool and texture: the materials of hygge style

Hygge style leans on materials that feel good in the hand and wear well: wood with visible grain, wool, linen, leather, stoneware. The colours stay calm and warm, oatmeal, rust, moss green and the browns of the wood itself, so the light has something soft to land on. One heavy wool throw you already own does more than a basket of new ones.

Solid wood is where Merit's side of hygge comes in. Mako Wood Furniture, which the Province of BC describes as a furniture producer in Surrey, builds its Erica bookcases in solid pine, according to our listing. Its Pecan coffee table is maple. Our listings give the LH Home Irish Coast dining table as FSC-certified reclaimed pine and the Gia table as solid acacia. There's more on where Mako builds and which woods it uses in a separate guide.

Hygge by the woodstove: keeping solid wood back

Plenty of Island homes heat with wood, and a stove is the natural centre of a hygge room. Keep furniture outside the clearances in the stove's installation instructions, since furniture burns. Dry stove heat can also crack a solid top over a winter, and our guide to humidity, woodstoves and solid wood covers how far back to set it.

Making a hygge reading nook: one deep chair, a shelf and a light

A hygge nook is a small place where one person can settle in for an hour. It needs a chair that holds you, a surface for a cup, a light over the shoulder and books within reach.

Best Home Furnishings Lorette wing back accent chair - Merit Home Furniture

The chair matters most. A wing back shelters the head and shoulders, which is that Old Norse idea of shelter turned into furniture. A recliner suits the reader who dozes off by page ten. Scandi, which calls its chairs Norwegian comfort furniture, says the adjustable headrest on its recliners is for relaxing, reading or watching television. These pieces from Merit's wing back and accent chairs, our full range of recliners and wood furniture fit a nook or a gathering room. The prices below were read on November 1, 2026, and are before applicable taxes.

Sunny Designs Homestead Hills nook bench 56 W x 20 D x 36 H in, storage seat $799

The Lorette and the Erica bookcase are listed for our Duncan and Port Alberni stores. The Decor-Rest 2379 and the nook bench are listed for Duncan and Campbell River, and the rest for Duncan. The Decor-Rest's seat sits 2 inches lower than the Lorette's, which can suit a reader whose feet hang in a taller chair. I'd sit in both before choosing.

Mako Erica solid pine bookcase, 30 by 48 inches - Merit Home Furniture

The Erica bookcase comes in heights from 30 to 72 inches, so a low one can double as the side table beside the chair. In a tight room, narrow recliners with their wall gaps measured are worth a look before you give up on a nook.

Hygge decorating ideas for gathering around a table

Most hygge happens with other people. Denmark.dk describes it as informal time with family or close friends, usually at home, often over a shared meal with no agenda. It adds that dinners in Denmark often last for hours. Two kinds of furniture make that easier: a table that grows for guests, and seats people want to stay in.

LH Home Irish Coast reclaimed pine extension dining table - Merit Home Furniture

An extension table suits a small Island house that fills up at Christmas. Both LH Home tables in the chart open from 55 to 71 inches on a butterfly leaf that stores inside the table. Both are listed as on display at Merit's Duncan store, so a call first will tell you they're still set up. A round table puts everyone at the same distance. The Island Living Victoria is 50 inches across with a stone top on a walnut-finish base. Merit doesn't print Island Living prices in its guides, so call for our best price.

A corner bench like the Homestead Hills seats more people than chairs in the same floor space. The Cambridge definition mentions baking for a reason, too. Soup on the stove and bread in the oven are part of hygge decorating you can smell.

A hygge living room where the seats face each other

In the living room, turn the sofa and chairs toward each other rather than all toward the television. A swivel chair helps; our listing for the Scandi Encore says its base turns to face the room or the window. Island Living's made-to-order sofas are built in Burnaby, BC, and how the Island Living Collection is ordered has its own guide. The Koksilah chair, from Island Living's in-stock range, is 29 inches wide, a good size for the spot across from the sofa.

The World Happiness Report 2026 is about social media. Its opening page says young people in North America and Western Europe are much less happy than 15 years ago. I won't claim a sofa fixes that. A basket for phones by the door and a television in a closed cabinet do make it easier to look at each other.

Decluttering for hygge without making the room bare

The clutter that works against hygge is the kind that reminds you of chores: mail, chargers, the laundry basket. Clearing it leaves room for things that carry a story, like books, photos, a child's drawing or a mug a friend made. Hygge keeps those out where people can see them.

Closed storage close to where things land does most of the work. The Mako blanket box holds the throws, so they come out in the evening and go away in the morning. The Homestead Hills bench has a lift-up seat over storage for board games. The Pecan coffee table's two drawers swallow remotes and coasters.

When a new piece replaces an old one, delivery from Merit's Duncan store is $150 across the Island with setup and assembly, and pickup at Duncan is free. Our crew can take the old piece away at delivery, usually $25 to $50 a piece from Duncan.

Hygge style for a wet Island winter

Denmark.dk says a cold, dark and wet climate keeps Danes indoors together for long parts of the year. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for North Cowichan, just north of Duncan, show measurable precipitation on 18.6 days in November and 18.2 in January. From November through February, that adds up to about 68 wet days out of 120.

So hygge on the Island starts at the door. Hooks and a mat for wet coats keep the living room dry. A chair near the stove belongs to whoever came in from the rain, and wool socks live in the blanket box. VisitDenmark says hygge runs all year, with picnics and barbecues in summer, and an Island August on the deck with friends counts just as well.

Where hygge decorating goes wrong

  • Candles left burning in an empty room, or close to a sofa, bedding or curtains. Health Canada names all three among the things to keep a burning candle away from.
  • Buying the whole look in one trip. Denmark.dk notes how quickly sellers turned hygge into blankets and candles. A room built that way looks staged.
  • So many cushions and throws that nobody can sit down.
  • Solid wood pushed right up to the woodstove, where it dries and can crack.
  • Treating hygge as a rule. Denmark.dk's version has no agenda, and a room that demands one has missed the point.
