Quietest dishwasher: what dBA means, and Merit's dishwashers ranked from 38 dBA up

Bosch 500 Series SHP95CM5N dishwasher rated 38 dBA, front view - Merit Home Furniture

The quietest dishwasher I can find in our Merit Home Furniture listings runs at 38 dBA. Four models share that rating: a Bosch 500 Series and a Samsung carried at our Campbell River store, and a Bosch Benchmark and a second Samsung by special order. For scale, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety puts a quiet room at 40 dBA.

A dishwasher's dBA rating is the maker's figure for how loud the machine runs, in A-weighted decibels, a scale that plays down low pitches the way human hearing does. We list 131 dishwashers for Vancouver Island buyers, and 129 of them print a rating, from 38 to 64 dBA. I'm based in Duncan, where we no longer have appliances. So every dishwasher I name is either carried at Campbell River or Port Alberni, or ordered specially.

Nobody has to put up with a dishwasher that drowns out the evening news. The ratings are easy to misread, though, so the ranked list comes first and the explanation of the numbers follows it.

What is the quietest dishwasher on Merit's Island listings?

The quietest dishwasher on our listings is rated 38 dBA. Two of the four at that level sit in a store: the Bosch 500 Series SHP95CM5N and the Samsung DW90F89T0USRAA, both at Campbell River. Below is every dishwasher Campbell River or Port Alberni carries at 45 dBA or less, lowest first. Each rating comes from our listing and was checked against the maker's spec sheet wherever the sheet prints one. Each dishwasher price is the one listed on November 1, 2026, the day this guide was checked, before applicable taxes.

Where two models share a rating, the cheaper one comes first. The other 32 dishwashers these two stores carry rate from 46 to 64 dBA, and two more print no rating at all. All of them sit in our full dishwasher listings, quiet or loud, with the store named on each page.

What are the top 5 quietest dishwashers we carry in store?

The five quietest dishwashers in our two appliance stores are the first five rows above. That's the Bosch SHP95CM5N and the Samsung at 38 dBA, the two KitchenAids at 39 dBA and the LG Studio at 40 dBA. Only the LG Studio is listed at both Campbell River and Port Alberni. The cheapest of the five is the Samsung, from $1,249.99. Between them they hold 13 to 16 place settings, so going quiet doesn't mean giving up capacity.

The quietest dishwashers by special order

Seventeen more listings at 42 dBA or under aren't carried in either store. They're special orders, and their product pages give (250) 746-5527 as the number to call and order.

Samsung DW80B7070US 42 dBA $1,149.99
Electrolux EDSP4944CS and EDSH4944CS 42 dBA $1,499 each
Bosch 800 Series, seven listings such as the SHP78CM5N 42 dBA $1,949 to $2,599

Panel ready means the door takes a cabinet panel that matches your kitchen. Our listing for the Bosch 800 Series SGV78C53UC, a custom-panel model, says the handle and door panel are sold separately. That cost sits on top of the price shown.

What does dBA mean when a dishwasher lists it?

Health Canada explains that scientists use A-weighted decibels, written dBA, to describe how loud a sound is to people. CCOHS adds that the A-weighting filter inside a sound meter turns down the low pitches. A dishwasher's rating is that measure, taken by the maker, for one machine running.

The decibel scale is logarithmic, which CCOHS describes as squeezing a huge span of numbers into a range people can work with. Its table of sound levels shows that a 3 dB rise doubles the sound energy. A 10 dB rise multiplies the energy by 10.

How loud that feels is a separate question. Hong Kong's Environmental Protection Department, in its noise education pages, says a sound is perceived twice as loud when its level rises by 10 dB. A 20 dB rise sounds about four times as loud to a normal ear.

Sound Level Source
Hearing threshold, average adult 0 dBA Health Canada
Breathing, barely heard around 10 dBA Health Canada
Quietest dishwashers we list 38 dBA Our listings
A quiet room 40 dBA CCOHS
Conversation at 1 metre 55 dBA CCOHS
A normal conversation around 60 dBA Health Canada
Loudest dishwasher we list 64 dBA Our listings

The two health bodies round conversation a little differently, which is normal for a sound that changes with the voice and the room. Put into kitchen terms with the 10 dB rule, a 48 dBA dishwasher sounds about twice as loud as a 38 dBA one. The Whirlpool portable at 64 dBA is 26 dB above the quietest Bosch, so it should sound more than four times as loud.

What decibel rating makes a dishwasher quiet?

A quiet dishwasher, on the figures above, is one rated in the low 40s or under, close to the 40 dBA of a quiet room. On Merit's listings, 65 of the 129 rated dishwashers are at 46 dBA or under. Here is how all 129 spread out, with the lowest listed price in each band.

Rating band Listings Lowest price
38 to 42 dBA 25: 8 in store, 17 special order $749
43 to 46 dBA 40: 14 in store, 26 special order $799.99
47 to 50 dBA 35: 17 in store, 18 special order $579
51 to 55 dBA 23: 8 in store, 15 special order $439.99
56 to 64 dBA 6: 4 in store, 2 special order $449

So what is the quietest dishwasher decibel rating you'll find here? It's 38 dBA, and nothing on our listings goes lower. My own line, from the 10 dB rule, is that 44 dBA or under is quiet and 42 or under is very quiet. A machine at 50 dBA still sits below the 55 dBA CCOHS gives for conversation at 1 metre, so it won't drown out talk, but it won't disappear either.

Why dishwasher dBA ratings from different makers aren't always comparable

Dishwasher dBA ratings come from each maker's own testing, and the sheets don't say how. I read the spec sheets from Bosch, KitchenAid, LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, Electrolux and Midea for this guide. None of them names the test behind its number, the cycle it was measured on, or the distance from the machine.

An international test code exists. IEC 60704-2-3, revised in 2025, sets out how to measure the airborne noise of household dishwashers. It covers machines built in, fitted under a counter or standing against a wall. A maker's sheet sold here doesn't tell you whether its number follows it.

Comparisons inside one maker's sheets are a different matter. Bosch's sheet for the SHP95CM5N calls it the quietest dishwasher in its class, and the footnote defines the class. It's the top five brands by market share with advertised prices of $499-$1,249, by TraQline's count, on a sheet written for the American market. That's a price bracket, and it tells you nothing about a Samsung or a KitchenAid.

So I'd treat a gap of one or two dBA between two makers as a tie. A gap of six or more is worth paying attention to. And where our listing and the maker's sheet ever disagree, the maker's sheet wins.

What makes a dishwasher quiet: insulation, motor, tub and the third rack

A quiet dishwasher is mostly a well-wrapped one. LG's spec sheets for the SDWB24S3, LDNTH753S, LDNPH654S and LDNTH862S each list tub insulation: a damping sheet, sound-absorbing felt and a base. KitchenAid's installation manual for the KDPS324SPS tells the installer not to remove the insulation blanket, because the blanket reduces the sound level.

LG Studio SDWB24S3 top-control dishwasher rated 40 dBA - Merit Home Furniture

The motor is the other half. LG's sheets put its DirectDrive motor in the same list as its LoDecibel rating. LG backs that motor for 10 years on the SDWB24S3, the LDNTH753S, the LDNPH654S and the LDNTH862S. The Frigidaire and Electrolux sheets describe a multi-speed motor instead.

Some quiet machines add a cycle for late running. LG's manual for the LDNTH753S describes a Night Care cycle that washes quietly overnight. Many listings also show a delay start, which lets the load run once everyone is asleep. Knowing how long a modern cycle runs helps set that start time.

How plastic tubs show up in dishwasher dBA ratings

Tub material lines up with the ratings on Merit's listings, even though it isn't the only factor. Sixteen of our dishwashers list a plastic tub. Fifteen of them rate 51 dBA or louder, and the six loudest, from 57 to 64 dBA, are all plastic. The exception is the Frigidaire Gallery GDPH4525AF, a plastic tub at 42 dBA on Frigidaire's own sheet, and the least expensive dishwasher we list at that level.

The third rack follows the same pattern for a different reason. Among the 25 dishwashers rated 42 dBA or under, 24 list a third rack. None of the six at 57 dBA and up has one. A third rack doesn't quiet anything; it comes on the same higher trims that get the extra insulation. Loading a dishwasher with a third rack, and the two racks below it, follows rules of its own.

Installation that makes a quiet dishwasher louder

A quiet dishwasher can lose some of its rating in the installation. The makers' manuals name the usual causes, and each one is cheap to get right on the day it goes in.

  1. Level it. LG's manual for the LDNTH753S warns that a dishwasher left out of level may leak, have trouble closing, or make noise. In a narrow opening, it says the machine should rest on all three levelling feet rather than hang from its brackets.
  2. Keep the insulation blanket on. KitchenAid's manual says the blanket reduces the sound level. It allows trimming along a perforation only for a 33 5/8 inch opening.
  3. Use the maker's lower cover. LG's manual says to fit only the lower cover supplied, and that a cabinet baseboard in its place may cause noise and leakage.
  4. Fix any shims to the floor. Where new flooring stops short of the opening, KitchenAid's manual calls for shims, secured so they can't move while the dishwasher runs.
  5. Expect a loud first drain. KitchenAid's manual says the drain pump sounds loud on the first run, since no water is in the system yet.

The room counts as much as the machine. In an open-plan kitchen there's no wall between the dishwasher and the sofa, so a few decibels make a bigger difference there. An island dishwasher faces the living area directly. Flush-fit models such as the KitchenAid KDTF924PPS and the LG FlushFit line are built to sit level with the cabinet fronts.

Built-ins take the same care as other built-in appliances. Our guide to built-in and freestanding wine coolers covers how an opening is measured. Appliance delivery and installation terms at Campbell River and Port Alberni are still being confirmed, so ask the store what its installers do when you order.

From the showroom floor

If quiet is the reason you're replacing a dishwasher, I'd narrow the list by dBA first and only then look at racks, finishes and Wi-Fi. I'd also think about where it will sit. A dishwasher under an island facing the living room earns its extra cost far sooner than one at the end of a galley kitchen with a door you can close.

Quietest dishwasher Canada: the quietest Bosch, KitchenAid, LG, Samsung and Whirlpool we list

The quietest dishwasher from each maker on Merit's listings runs from 38 dBA for Bosch and Samsung to 59 dBA for Amana. Where a maker's quietest model is a special order, the table also gives the quietest one a store carries.

Maker Quietest we list Where and price
Bosch SHP95CM5N, 38 dBA Campbell River, $1,899
Samsung DW90F89T0USRAA, 38 dBA Campbell River, from $1,249.99

Danby DDW2400ESS, 51 dBA; in store, 18 inch DDW18D1ESS at 51 dBA Special order, from $579.99; Campbell River and Port Alberni, from $689.99
Amana ADFS2524RS, 59 dBA Campbell River and Port Alberni, from $499.99

For the quietest Whirlpool dishwasher, Whirlpool's spec sheet for the WDT550SAP names it a 44 dBA ADA compliant model that installs flush with the cabinets. For the quietest KitchenAid dishwasher, KitchenAid's sheet titles the KDTF924PPS a 39 dBA flush-to-cabinet machine. Danby, which also makes the Silhouette wine coolers we carry, keeps its dishwashers at the budget end.

What is the quietest dishwasher available in Canada?

I can only speak for what we list, and that tops out at 38 dBA from Bosch and Samsung. We don't list Miele, GE Profile, Fisher and Paykel or Thermador, so their machines aren't in these tables. Bosch's own sheets sell the SHP95CM5N and the Benchmark SHP9PCM5N with the line "So quiet at 38 dBA". Samsung's sheet for the DW90F89T0U calls its 38 dBA "whisper quiet".

What a quiet dishwasher costs on Merit's listings

A quiet dishwasher costs more, but less than the top of the range suggests. In our two stores, the least expensive dishwasher at 42 dBA or under is $1,099.99, shared by the KitchenAid KDFS324SPS, the KitchenAid KDPS324SPS and the LG LDNTH753S. The least expensive at 38 dBA is the Samsung at $1,249.99. The Bosch Benchmark at $3,149 buys the same 38 dBA rating with a different set of features.

At the other end, the Amana ADFS2524RS lists from $499.99 at both stores and rates 59 dBA. The Samsung is 21 dB quieter for $750.00 more. By the 10 dB rule, that's a machine more than four times quieter to the ear.

Special orders widen the choice. The Frigidaire Gallery GDPH4525AF reaches 42 dBA at $749, and three special-order models reach 44 dBA at $999.99: the Whirlpool WDT550SAP, the Midea MDT24P6CST and the Samsung DW80B6060US.

A quiet dishwasher for open kitchens, condos, small spaces and night runs

A quiet dishwasher earns its price fastest where the kitchen shares space with sleep or work. That covers an open-plan main floor, a condo where the bedroom wall backs onto the kitchen, and a home office off the dining room. A busy household running a load after every meal hears its dishwasher more often, which makes the lower number worth more there too.

BC Hydro gives Islanders a reason to run it late. On its optional time-of-day pricing, electricity used overnight, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., gets a discount of 5 cents per kWh. Use from 4 to 9 p.m. carries the same 5 cent surcharge. BC Hydro's own tips suggest loading the dishwasher after dinner and setting a delay start for 11 p.m.

BC Hydro also warns that apartment or condo buildings may have noise restrictions that limit running a dishwasher late at night. If you live in a strata, check the bylaws before counting on an overnight cycle, and lean toward the low 40s or under.

Quietest dishwasher dBA for an 18 inch or portable machine

Small dishwashers on Merit's listings run louder than the 24 inch ones. The quietest 18 inch models are the Bosch 800 Series SPE68C75UC and SPV68C73UC at 44 dBA, both special orders at $1,899. In store, the Danby DDW18D1ESS rates 51 dBA and the Frigidaire FFBD1831US rates 52 dBA.

Portables are the loudest dishwashers we list. The Whirlpool WDP370PAH portable rates 64 dBA at $1,099.99, at both stores in black and at Port Alberni in white. The Danby countertop model at Port Alberni rates 52 dBA for $439.99. Both are among our portable and countertop dishwashers, and they suit renters who can't plumb in a built-in.

Which dishwasher has the least problems?

I can't rank dishwashers by how often they break down, because Merit doesn't hold repair figures across makers. What I can show is how long each maker stands behind the parts that fail, as our listings print it.

Dishwasher Maker's warranty, per our listing
LG Studio SDWB24S3, 40 dBA 2 years parts and labour; 5 years controls, door liner, racks and tub; 10 years direct drive motor
Midea MDT24P4AST, 45 dBA 2 years parts and labour; limited lifetime on door and tub
Bosch 800 Series SGV78C53UC, 42 dBA 1 year parts and labour; 5 years microprocessor and racks; limited lifetime inner tub liner
LG LDNTH753S, 42 dBA 1 year parts and labour; 10 years direct drive motor
Samsung DW90F89T0USRAA, 38 dBA 1 year parts and labour
KitchenAid KDFS324SPS, 41 dBA 1 year parts and labour

The maker's own warranty document governs if it differs from a listing. Merit backs the manufacturer's warranty on everything we sell, but appliances work differently. For a dishwasher, the warranty page points you first to the maker, or to the Campbell River or Port Alberni store that sold it. SmartOne from Zucora is the extended protection we offer, and it works on any item. How our warranty handles a dishwasher claim sets out the details.

Upkeep matters for any dishwasher. LG's manual for the LDNTH753S asks owners in hard-water areas to clean the filter at least once a month with a soft brush. It also lists debris left in the filter among the causes of poor washing that its warranty doesn't cover. Detergent counts too, and choosing pods or powder for soft Island water is a question of its own.

Where a quiet dishwasher rating can mislead you

  • The number comes from the maker's test, not your kitchen. Hard floors, an open room and a gap under the counter all change what you hear.
  • Ratings from two makers may not come from the same method, and none of the sheets I read says which method was used.
  • A poor installation can cost a quiet machine its advantage: out of level, missing its insulation blanket, or fitted with the wrong lower panel.
  • Panel-ready models need a door panel and handle bought separately, which adds to the price.
  • The quietest 18 inch and portable machines are louder than the quietest 24 inch ones, so a small kitchen may have to accept a higher number.
  • A strata noise rule can still rule out a 2 a.m. cycle, however quiet the machine.

Asking about a quiet dishwasher at Campbell River or Port Alberni

I work from Duncan, so for a dishwasher I'd point you to our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores. It's worth calling before the drive to ask which models are set up and whether any can be heard running. Bring the width, depth and height of the opening.

The Campbell River showroom sits at 1300 A Homewood Rd, and the Port Alberni showroom on Third Ave at number 2935.

For a special order, call (250) 746-5527 and ask for the model number from its page. How the four showrooms split the range is set out in our guide to Merit's Island stores.

Ask Campbell River about the 38 dBA models, (250) 286-0868

Ask Port Alberni about its quiet KitchenAid and LG, (250) 724-6644

My other dishwasher, range and fridge buying guides are gathered on one page, and you can browse built-in dishwashers from 38 dBA up in one place.
