Merit Home Furniture has four furniture stores on Vancouver Island, in Duncan, Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni. They're family stores, open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday. Our Courtenay store has closed, so the Comox Valley now goes to Campbell River.
My husband Michael and I run the Duncan store. My grandfather bought the Nanaimo store in 1984, and the other three grew out of it. This guide sorts out which store is yours, what each one lists, how delivery works, and where our Canadian-made pieces come from.
Where are Merit's four furniture stores on Vancouver Island?
The four Merit stores sit on the Island's two highways, from the Cowichan Valley up to Campbell River and across to the Alberni Valley. Hours differ by store, so the table gives each one for Monday to Saturday, with Sunday closed everywhere.
| Store | Address | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Duncan | 107 Ingram St, V9L 1N8 (250) 746-5527 |
9 to 5 |
| Nanaimo | 3230 Norwell Dr, V9T 1X5 (250) 756-1153 |
10 to 5 |
| Campbell River | 1300 A Homewood Rd, V9W 3N7 (250) 286-0868 |
10 to 5 |
| Port Alberni | 2935 Third Ave, V9Y 2A6 (250) 724-6644 |
9:30 to 5:30 |
The stores opened in this order: Nanaimo in 1984, Campbell River in 1987, Port Alberni in 1997 and Duncan in 2001. Each store name in the table links to its own page, with parking, bus stops and the drive in.
Which Merit store serves your town?
The family's own list of towns for each store follows. It's the store we'd send you to first, though any of the four will help.
- Duncan: the Cowichan Valley, Cowichan Bay, Maple Bay, Mill Bay, Shawnigan Lake, Lake Cowichan, Youbou, Mesachie Lake, Honeymoon Bay, Port Renfrew, the Malahat, Victoria and Salt Spring.
- Nanaimo: Ladysmith, Cedar, Thetis Island, Lantzville, Nanoose Bay, Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
- Campbell River: Courtenay, Comox, Sayward, Gold River, Tahsis, Zeballos, Port McNeill, Port Hardy, Port Alice, Winter Harbour and the small northern islands.
- Port Alberni: Sproat Lake, Bamfield, Ucluelet and Tofino.
For the Comox Valley, the guide to buying furniture since the Courtenay store closed covers the change in detail. Salt Spring, Thetis and the other ferry islands have their own guide on the ferry, the fee and the booking.
Is there a Merit furniture store in Victoria?
No. Victoria has furniture stores, Ashley HomeStore's Victoria location among them, but none is a Merit store. Duncan is our closest, and the guide to delivering from Duncan to Victoria and the South Island explains how that works.
How far apart are the Merit stores by road?
Road distance between stores matters when a piece is listed at one store and you live near another. We measured each pair over OpenStreetMap roads with the OSRM route planner on October 3, 2026, from door to door.
| Between | Road | Highways |
|---|---|---|
| Duncan and Nanaimo | 59 km | 1, then 19 |
| Nanaimo and Port Alberni | 79 km | 19 and 4 |
| Duncan and Port Alberni | 137 km | 1, 19 and 4 |
| Nanaimo and Campbell River | 148 km | 19A and 19 |
| Campbell River and Port Alberni | 151 km | 19 and 4 |
| Duncan and Campbell River | 205 km | 1 and 19 |
Nanaimo sits in the middle, which is why it's the shortest drive from three directions. Port Alberni is the only store on Highway 4, over the Hump from the east coast.
Living room, bedroom and dining: what each Merit store lists
Every listing on our website carries the store or stores that sell it. On October 16, 2026 the site had 2,443 active pieces. Duncan was tagged on 1,080, Port Alberni on 1,093 and Campbell River on 872.
- Duncan: 275 sofas, loveseats and sectionals, 128 recliners and lift chairs, 77 beds, 14 mattresses and 73 dining pieces.
- Campbell River: 78 sofas, loveseats and sectionals, 67 recliners and lift chairs, 23 beds, 30 mattresses and 47 dining pieces.
- Port Alberni: 103 sofas, loveseats and sectionals, 92 recliners and lift chairs, 71 beds, 24 mattresses and 59 dining pieces.
Appliances are listed at the other two stores only. When we counted them on October 9, Campbell River had 341 and Port Alberni had 456.
Nanaimo isn't in the list because its listings aren't tagged yet. At Nanaimo, the family lists furniture for every room, plus mattresses and appliances. A call is the way to ask what it has right now.
Online ordering runs through Duncan for now. A piece listed only at Campbell River or Port Alberni shows "call to order", and 1,363 listings were in that group. Duncan is the one store not carrying appliances going forward, and Island Living is sold through Duncan.
Across all stores, the site lists 1,041 pieces for sofas, chairs and the rest of the living room. Another 286 cover beds, dressers and nightstands, and 232 are tables and chairs for the dining room. A small example is the Ashley Lyncott counter height table, 36 inches round, listed at $549 before applicable taxes.
Most of what you see at Duncan is a display model, and your piece is ordered for you. Mattresses take 2 to 3 weeks, Ashley 4 to 6 and Decor-Rest 8 to 10 until they're ready for pickup or delivery.
How far does Merit's local delivery go?
Delivery covers the whole Island, but each Merit store sets its own rates for the towns it serves. Only Duncan's terms are published so far. From Duncan, delivery across the Island is $150 with assembly included. A delivery that needs a ferry can reach some of the Gulf Islands, and the Duncan store has the details.
A mattress going the length of the Island may need a different way of shipping. Pillows, sheets and other small items are picked up free at the Duncan store, or they come along with a furniture or mattress delivery. When an order is ready, we call to book a time between 9 and 5, Monday to Friday.
For Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni, ask the store for its delivery price when you call for your quote. Our published delivery terms will add the other stores as they set theirs out.
Do you offer old furniture removal?
Yes. Duncan can take away your old furniture when it delivers, usually for $25 to $50 a piece and sometimes at no charge. The other stores set their own charge, so ask when you book.
What are the best rated furniture stores on Vancouver Island?
Ratings on the Island mostly live on Google, and each Merit store has its own listing and its own reviews. Vancouver's best rated stores are a ferry ride away on the mainland, so for Islanders the useful reviews are the ones for the store they'd actually drive to.
We read all four of our listings on September 3, 2026. "No pressure" came up in 9 of 60 Nanaimo reviews, 5 of 99 in Duncan and 4 of 76 in Campbell River. Port Alberni's reviews talked most about service, prices, appliances and delivery.
A good rating tells you about service. It doesn't tell you how a sofa is built, which is the next question.
Who makes the best quality furniture in Canada, and how is it proven?
No single maker is best at everything, so the fairer question is who builds here and how a label proves it. Canada's Competition Bureau sets the test for a "Made in Canada" claim. The last substantial change to the product must happen in Canada, and at least 51% of its direct costs must be Canadian.
A "Product of Canada" label asks for 98%. "Made in Canada" also needs a qualifier, such as "with imported parts".
Two makers we carry build in Canada by their own account. Decor-Rest makes its upholstery in Woodbridge, Ontario. Island Living runs a made-to-order program from Burnaby, separate from an in-stock range made overseas for Island Living, so we check the tag on each listing.
The Canadian-made furniture guides go maker by maker. A separate guide covers what happens when something needs fixing after the sale.
Where a four-store family chain falls short
Four stores is not one store four times over. The floors are different, and Duncan's is mostly display models. A piece you saw in one town may be an order, not a floor model, in another.
Nanaimo's stock isn't on the website yet, so a Nanaimo visit starts with a phone call. Online orders go through Duncan only. Delivery prices outside Duncan aren't published, so the final cost for a Port Hardy or Tofino delivery comes from that store.
Our deposit and exchange rules are written down. A special order needs a 24% deposit. Exchanges are encouraged for up to 30 days, decided case by case. The drive from Winter Harbour or Port Renfrew is a long one.

Calling ahead before a drive to a Merit store
If you tell the store what you want to sit in or lie on, we'll say whether it's set up there. If another of our stores has it, we'll say which one and how far the drive is.
Every guide on how the stores work is on the page for our four showrooms. Each store's number is in the table above, and I'm at the Duncan one.
