Furniture in the Comox Valley after our Courtenay store closed: where to find us now

Sofa from the Merit Home Furniture range, delivered and assembled on Vancouver Island - Merit Home Furniture

Our Courtenay store has closed, and the nearest Merit Home Furniture showroom to the Comox Valley is now Campbell River, at 1300 A Homewood Rd. It sits 52 km from downtown Courtenay by road, up Highway 19, and the store's number is (250) 286-0868.

Two things work differently from what valley customers knew. Online ordering runs through our Duncan store for now, so a piece only Campbell River carries shows "call to order" on the website. Delivery terms also depend on which store sends the piece, and each store sets its own.

Is there still a Merit furniture store in Courtenay?

No. The Courtenay showroom is closed, and Merit now has four stores on Vancouver Island: Duncan, Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni. Our family's list of the towns Campbell River looks after names Courtenay and Comox, alongside Port Hardy, Sayward and Gold River.

The table gives road distances from the middle of each valley town to each showroom. I ran them through the OSRM router on OpenStreetMap roads on October 2, 2026. Drive times change with traffic and weather, so I left them out.

Sofa from the Merit Home Furniture range, delivered and assembled on Vancouver Island - Merit Home Furniture
Showroom Courtenay Comox Cumberland
Campbell River 52 km 58 km 56 km
Nanaimo 102 km 107 km 97 km
Port Alberni 105 km 110 km 100 km
Duncan 159 km 165 km 155 km

Campbell River keeps hours of 10 to 5, Monday to Saturday, and closes Sunday, according to our store list. A few online directories print different hours for it, so a quick call before the drive saves a wasted trip.

Ordering from the Comox Valley: Duncan listings and call-to-order pieces

Online orders go through the Duncan store only, for now. Every listing on our site names the stores that carry it, and on October 16, 2026 the site had 2,443 listings live. Here is how they split for a valley buyer:

  • 1,080 listings are carried by Duncan, and those can be ordered online.
  • 872 listings are carried by Campbell River.
  • 678 of the Campbell River listings are not carried by Duncan, so they show "call to order" and the sale goes through Homewood Road.

Of those 678 call-to-order pieces, about half are appliances: fridges, ranges, dishwashers, washers and dryers. That split follows a family decision: Duncan is the one Merit store that will not keep carrying appliances. A new fridge or a set of washers and dryers for a valley laundry room comes through Campbell River.

Furniture shows up there too. Campbell River's listings include 53 recliners and 15 sofas, and the differences between rocker, wall-hugger and power recliners are worth reading before the call. Pieces Duncan carries are mostly display models in the showroom, and the order is placed for each buyer. Mattresses take 2 to 3 weeks and Ashley 4 to 6, while Decor-Rest and Mako take 8 to 10. The full list of lead times by maker covers the rest.

What delivery to Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland costs

Delivery into the Comox Valley is priced by the store that sends the piece. Our website prints only the Duncan store's terms, because Nanaimo, Campbell River and Port Alberni have not yet confirmed theirs for the site.

Item Duncan's published terms
Island delivery $150, assembly included
The Comox Valley Duncan's crew goes as far as Comox for larger sales
A mattress going across the Island May need a different shipping method
Pillows, bedding, small items Picked up free in Duncan, or added to a furniture or mattress delivery
Pickup Free at the Duncan store
Booking We call to set a time, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5
Campbell River delivery Priced by that store; ask when you call

Free local delivery is a line valley buyers will see on other furniture pages. Ours is not free. The $150 from Duncan pays for the delivery and for putting the piece together in the room. For one chair or a single mattress going to Courtenay, Campbell River's own delivered price is the number to ask for.

Do you offer old furniture removal in the Comox Valley?

Yes, we take old furniture away when we deliver. From Duncan the charge is usually $25 to $50 a piece, and sometimes it is included in the order. Each of the other stores sets its own removal charge, so Campbell River quotes its fee with the delivery.

When no store is hauling the old piece, the regional landfill takes it. Comox Strathcona Waste Management charges $20 a piece for mattresses and box springs, and it dismantles them for recycling instead of burying them. Ordinary household garbage costs $170 a tonne there, with a $10 minimum for loads up to 100 kilograms.

What is the cheapest furniture shop for a Comox Valley buyer?

The cheapest shop is the one whose total stays low after delivery, assembly and removal are added. A low sticker price with a separate setup charge and a haul-away fee can end up costing more than a higher price that covers them.

Our prices are on the website, so the comparison can start at the kitchen table. We checked the lowest listed prices among pieces Duncan carries on October 16, 2026, before applicable taxes, plus one appliance through Campbell River.

Sales come around often, so the price on the listing that day is the one to go by. The rest of the living room range on our site is listed with prices too. Where the Restwell name comes from and how its beds are built is covered in what we know about Restwell.

Who makes the best quality furniture in Canada, among the lines we order?

No furniture store owns quality, but makers do publish how and where they build. Canada's Competition Bureau generally accepts a "Made in Canada" claim when at least 51% of the direct production cost is spent in Canada. The last substantial transformation has to happen here too, and the claim needs a qualifier such as "with imported parts".

Two of our upholstery makers build in Canada. Decor-Rest was incorporated in Toronto in 1972 and now works from a 250,000 sq. ft. base in Woodbridge, Ontario. The Decor-Rest 2382 sofa starts at $1,349 in its entry fabric, and 15 Decor-Rest listings on our site are marked as carried by Campbell River. The pieces tagged as built in Canada are gathered in one place.

Island Living Tofino sofa, made to order in Burnaby, BC - Merit Home Furniture

Island Living runs two programs from Burnaby, BC. Its made-to-order sofas, chairs and beds are built there, while its in-stock range, every sectional included, is made overseas for Island Living. The Island Living Tofino is one of the 23 Island Living listings on our site tagged Canadian Made, out of 81. Island Living keeps its prices off the internet, and Duncan is the store that sells it.

Mako is our solid wood line. In April 2026 the Province of BC called it "a furniture producer in Surrey", and Mako's own site lists its office there without saying where each piece is made. I keep it off the Canadian-made count for that reason. On our site, 32 Mako listings are marked as carried by Campbell River, and Mako's alder, pine and maple collections have their own guide.

When the drive from the Comox Valley isn't worth it

Losing the Courtenay showroom means valley buyers can no longer sit on a sofa ten minutes from home. Campbell River is 52 km away, and Duncan, the store that sells Island Living and most of our Decor-Rest, is 159 km. For someone who wants to try five recliners in one afternoon, that distance is a real cost.

Courtenay still has furniture stores of its own. The Brick lists a store on 29th Street in South Courtenay, near Cliffe Avenue, and several independent shops trade in the valley. A buyer who needs a piece this week, or wants to compare in person close to home, may do better there.

A listing on our site is also not a promise that a piece is set up in any one showroom. A call before the drive tells you what is there.

Calling Campbell River from Courtenay or Comox

A call to Homewood Road before the drive settles three questions. What is set up in the showroom, what a piece costs delivered to your street, and when it can arrive. For anything Duncan carries, Michael and I take the call at the Duncan store, (250) 746-5527.

Call the Campbell River store, (250) 286-0868

Our delivery and old-furniture terms are written out in full, and how the four showrooms work together covers the rest of the Island.

Rubeena Sandhu is the third generation of the family behind Merit Home Furniture and runs the Duncan store with Michael.
