Panel ready appliances: what they are, what they cost and how they fit

Bosch Benchmark 36-inch panel ready French door refrigerator with wood-grain panels - Merit Home Furniture

Panel ready appliances are dishwashers, fridges, freezers and drink coolers sold without a finished door face, so a cabinet panel can go on instead. The extra cost I'd plan for is the panel, not the appliance: on our Bosch listings the panel ready version costs the same as or less than the stainless twin. The panel, the handle and the cabinetmaker's time sit on top, and that part of the bill depends on your cabinets.

A panel ready appliance is one whose door is built to carry a custom cabinet panel and handle, which the buyer supplies. Your cabinetmaker builds a panel that matches the kitchen, and it screws onto the appliance door. Close the doors and the fridge or dishwasher reads as one more cabinet.

At Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island, our listings carry 19 panel ready models. They run from $899 for a Frigidaire dishwasher to $12,999 for a 36-inch Bosch French door fridge, before applicable taxes. Most are special orders. I work in Duncan, and Merit's appliance business now runs through Campbell River, Port Alberni and the special-order line.

What are panel ready appliances, and how are they different from built-in ones?

Panel ready describes the door. Built-in describes how the box fits the kitchen. A built-in appliance sits inside a cabinet opening, flush with the counter and the boxes around it, and is screwed to the cabinetry. A panel ready appliance takes a door panel. Most panel ready models are also built-in, but the two words aren't the same thing.

The LG Studio LSBNC1021P shows the gap. Its Merit listing marks it Custom Panel Ready, yet lists the installation type as freestanding. LG's own spec sheet gives clearances of 3/10 inch at the sides and 1 inch on top. Built-in units go the other way: Bosch's column fridge spec sheet calls for a cutout of 84 by 30 inches, and 24 3/4 or 25 inches deep.

"Integrated" and "custom panel" are the makers' other names for the same idea. Bosch titles its models Custom Panel, and KitchenAid's documents say Panel Ready. Inside, a panel ready fridge or dishwasher works like its finished sibling. Bosch's 800 Series panel ready dishwasher has 16 place settings, the same as most of the 24-inch stainless 800 models on our listings.

For the models in this guide, panels and handles are bought separately. Bosch marks them "not supplied" in its fridge installation drawings. Silhouette's panel guide says the panel and handle are "to be supplied by customer". Several of our listings print CUSTOM PANEL & HANDLE SOLD SEPARATELY in capitals, which is a fair warning.

Which appliances come panel ready at Merit

Dishwashers make up the biggest group of panel ready appliances on our listings, followed by full-height fridges and freezers, then drink coolers. Here are all 19, with prices read on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes.

Silhouette Pro Gen 3 beverage Under-counter cooler, 24 in $1,849

The two Silhouette coolers are carried at our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores. Everything else in the table is a special order with no store attached, and its page says to call (250) 746-5527. A special order takes a 24% deposit, and how our deposits and exchanges work is written up in its own guide.

Column units are single-purpose towers, a fridge in one and a freezer in the other, set side by side or apart. All the full-height Bosch and KitchenAid models in the table except the column freezer are listed as counter depth, so the doors finish close to the cabinet line. Merit doesn't list Thermador or Fisher & Paykel, two other names in built-in kitchens, so I've left them out.

Panel ready dishwashers: panel weight, size and the controls on the top edge

A panel ready dishwasher has a weight window for its door panel, a thickness range and a maximum height, and each maker prints its own. Bosch's spec sheet says its door leaves the factory set for a given panel weight, and to call Bosch about anything outside it. Here is what the makers' documents say for the dishwashers on our listings.

Bosch 800 Series panel ready dishwasher with a white shaker-style cabinet panel and a bar handle - Merit Home Furniture
Dishwasher Door panel rules from the maker
Bosch 800 SHV78CM3N Takes 7 to 24 lb; set at the factory for 11 to 18 lb; call Bosch for a panel outside that
Bosch installation guide, all three series 9 to 18 lb, at least 3/4 in thick, no longer than 30 1/8 in
Frigidaire FDSR4501AP 4.4 to 17.6 lb; 16 to 22 mm thick; 606.5 mm wide; no taller than 759 mm
KitchenAid KDTF324PPA Panel 28 3/8 to 29 15/16 in tall, depending on the opening

The two Bosch documents don't match. The 800 Series spec sheet gives the wider 7 to 24 lb range, while the installation guide packed with the 300, 800 and Benchmark models says 9 to 18 lb. I'd build to the narrower figure unless Bosch confirms the other for your model. A solid maple panel and a painted MDF panel of the same size can weigh quite differently, so ask the cabinetmaker for the weight as well as the size.

Bosch wants the cabinet opening at least 34 inches high and 24 inches wide. The top of the door has to sit at least 1/4 inch below the underside of the counter. KitchenAid's dimension guide allows an opening from 32 1/4 to 35 7/16 inches high, measured from the lowest point under the counter.

Every panel ready dishwasher on our listings is a top control model. The buttons sit on the top edge of the door, hidden when it's shut, so the front stays plain wood or paint. The catch is that you can't glance at a display to see whether it's running. Bosch's answer, in the SHV53D73UC listing, is InfoLight, a red light projected on the floor during a cycle.

Which brand of panel ready dishwasher is the most reliable?

I can't name the most reliable panel ready dishwasher brand. I have no repair-rate data I'd stand behind, and our own sales records aren't a test. What I'd compare instead is sound rating, warranty and parts. Our listings give 42 dBA for the Bosch 800 by its spec sheet, 44 dBA for the KitchenAid, and 49 dBA for the Frigidaire and both Electrolux models. On the appliances Merit sells, we stand behind the maker's warranty. How that fits with a maker's own terms is in our warranty guide.

Panel ready refrigerators: door panel weights, hinges and room to stand them up

Panel ready refrigerators carry far heavier panels than dishwashers, and the hinges do the work. Bosch's drawings for the 36-inch Benchmark French door fridge allow up to 141 lb on each of its two door panels and 121 lb on the freezer drawer panel. Each door panel is 17 13/16 inches wide, and the drawer panel 35 3/4 inches. Bosch leaves a 1/8 inch gap between them.

Bosch Benchmark 36-inch panel ready French door refrigerator fitted with wood-grain door panels and steel handles - Merit Home Furniture

The 30-inch Benchmark bottom-freezer model is lopsided by comparison. Its door panel can weigh up to 133 lb, but the freezer drawer panel only 38 lb. A cabinetmaker who builds both fronts from the same heavy slab could overload the drawer, so I'd pass both limits on in writing.

Hinges vary by maker and by model, and the hinge decides how the door panel sits against the cabinets around it:

  • Bosch's column fridge uses an Optiflex hinge, which Bosch says allows flush-mount doors without damaging the cabinets beside them.
  • The 36-inch Bosch is named for its Softclose Flat Hinge. Bosch's drawing shows its doors opening to 90 or 115 degrees.
  • Silhouette's Pro Gen 3 coolers use zero-clearance hinges. The panel has slots cut in it for hinge clearance.

Bosch's column spec sheet adds that handleless panels should not go on a unit without soft close. A kitchen with no pulls at all is a question to settle before ordering.

One Island point sits in that same spec sheet. When two Bosch columns stand side by side, they need a heater kit, the HEATKITB80, which comes included when one of them is the freezer column. Bosch also recommends it in areas subject to humidity, or where the unit sits next to an outside wall. On the Island, a damp winter and a fridge on an outside wall are worth raising with whoever plans the install.

Getting a tall built-in through the door and upright is part of the plan, and Merit's listings don't print these heights. Bosch's drawings for the 36-inch unit ask for 87 1/4 to 90 3/4 inches of height to tip it upright, depending on which way it tilts. The 30-inch needs 87 1/4 to 88 3/4. An 8-foot ceiling clears that, but a low soffit or a basement suite might not.

Are panel-ready refrigerators worth it?

A panel ready refrigerator earns its keep when the fridge would otherwise be the largest object in an open kitchen. In a closed galley with stainless everywhere else, a finished fridge does the same job with less work. The Bosch Benchmark French door is $12,999 panel ready against $13,899 for the stainless model on our listings. The saving goes toward the panels, and probably not much further.

From the showroom floor

If I were planning a panel ready kitchen, I'd hand the cabinetmaker the maker's installation drawing before a single panel is cut. The weight window, the hinge slots and the gap between doors are all on that drawing, and none of them can be fixed with a sander afterward.

Ventilation and the toe-kick under panel ready appliances

A panel ready fridge breathes through the toe-kick, the recessed strip at floor level under the cabinets. Bosch's drawing for the 36-inch Benchmark shows a vented strip 4 inches (102 mm) high at the toe-kick. Its safety pages say to keep ventilation openings in the appliance casing or the cabinet around it clear. A cabinetmaker matching every toe-kick in the kitchen may want to run solid wood across that strip. That's the one place not to.

Dishwashers have their own rule. KitchenAid's dimension guide allows a custom toe-kick, with the panel thickness adjusted so it sits flush. But the dishwasher's original metal toe-kick has to stay in place. Bosch's guide fixes its toe panel to brackets, with the bottom edge flush with the floor.

Where the appliances sit matters too. Natural Resources Canada's ENERGY STAR advice is to keep a fridge away from heat sources, and it names dishwashers along with ovens, heating vents and sun. In a panel ready kitchen the dishwasher and the fridge can end up side by side behind matching doors. I'd put a drawer bank or a cabinet between them if the plan allows it.

Silhouette's manual says its Pro Gen 3 coolers breathe at the front, so they can sit flush between cabinets. Silhouette's Pro Gen 3 panel is limited to 3/4 inch (19 mm) thick and 20 lb (10 kg). The cabinet opening and the rest of a cooler install are in choosing and fitting a wine cooler or beverage centre. The model details are in the Silhouette range, unit by unit.

Do panel ready appliances cost more?

On Merit's listings, panel ready appliances usually cost the same as or less than the finished version of the same model. The extra money goes to the panel, the handle and whoever builds and hangs them. Here are the Bosch pairs on our listings, before applicable taxes.

Bosch model Panel ready Finished door
Benchmark 36 in French door fridge $12,999 $13,899, stainless
Benchmark 30 in bottom-freezer fridge $11,399 $11,999, stainless, carried at Campbell River
Benchmark 24 in dishwasher $3,049 $3,049 to $3,149, stainless
800 Series 24 in dishwasher $2,299 $2,299 to $2,599, stainless

The panel is the open question. I won't put a dollar figure on a custom panel. It depends on the wood, the finish, the cabinetmaker and whether the panels are made with the rest of the kitchen. A panel built alongside new cabinet doors is a few more doors in a big order. A one-off panel matched to a 15-year-old finish is a harder job.

One price we can give. Bosch makes its own stainless door panel kit for the 18-inch column freezer, which we list at $862. It suits anyone who wants the built-in fit without a wood front. Bosch also lists a flat stainless panel for the 30-inch column fridge, the BFL30IR800, which we don't currently list. Handles are extra on most panel ready models, from the maker or the cabinetmaker.

Running costs don't change with the door. The Bosch 800 panel ready dishwasher's spec sheet gives 239 kWh a year, and the Benchmark column fridge 279 kWh. On average, a certified ENERGY STAR fridge uses 9% less energy than a standard model, according to Natural Resources Canada. Every panel ready Bosch fridge and dishwasher on our listings is marked ENERGY STAR, except the 300 Series SHV53D73UC.

Installing and servicing panel ready appliances in BC

Installing a panel ready dishwasher in BC brings in an electrical permit. Technical Safety BC lists "permanently-installed electrical equipment such as a dishwasher" among the work that needs a homeowner electrical permit. Homeowners can apply for one themselves; a hired licensed contractor applies on the owner's behalf. Owners in a strata can't get a homeowner permit and must hire a licensed contractor. Depending on where you live, Technical Safety BC or your municipality issues it.

Bosch's dishwasher guide asks for a dedicated, grounded circuit on a 15 or 20 amp breaker. If you have the fully integrated panel, Bosch says to fit it to the door before attaching the mounting brackets. So the panel goes on in the middle of the install, which is why I'd get the cabinetmaker and the installer talking before delivery day.

Servicing panel ready appliances has a step a freestanding unit doesn't. Built-ins are screwed to the cabinets with mounting brackets, so a repair that needs the unit pulled out starts by undoing them. On the Silhouette coolers the panel is held by six screws hidden behind the door gasket. Ask the store who would send the technician for your model, and keep the installation drawing with the manual.

Delivery and hookup for appliances are questions for the Merit store that takes the order. Lead times on special orders depend on the maker, so ask when you call.

When panel ready appliances are the wrong choice

  • You're replacing one appliance in a finished kitchen. Matching a new panel to old cabinet doors is the hardest version of the job.
  • Nobody is lined up to build the panels. The appliance arrives as a bare door, and it isn't finished until the panel is on.
  • You like seeing what's running. The controls are hidden on the top edge, and a floor light is the only hint on some models.
  • The opening is short or the ceiling is low. Check the maker's drawing for the cabinet opening and the height needed to tip the unit upright.

What dishwasher to stay away from?

For a panel ready kitchen, I'd stay away from any dishwasher whose panel limits your cabinetmaker can't meet. A heavy solid-wood panel on a door set for 11 to 18 lb is a problem from day one. Put the panel weight in the cabinet order.
