Both clean well when used the way the maker asks, so dishwasher pods vs powder mostly turns on your water, your cycle length and who lives in the house. I'd follow the manual: Whirlpool and KitchenAid recommend quality pods and tablets, and Bosch's manual asks for powder or tabs. With small children at home, I'd lean to powder or gel, for a safety reason Health Canada spells out.
A dishwasher pod is a single pre-measured dose of detergent sealed in a film that dissolves in the wash. Powder is the same kind of detergent, loose in a box, that you measure into the dispenser cup yourself. With powder, the dose can be cut for soft water, which is what Campbell River and Port Alberni get from the tap.
I'm Michael Ruhr, writing from Merit Home Furniture's Duncan store. Merit Duncan no longer carries appliances. The 131 dishwashers on our site, part of a much wider appliance selection, are listed at our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores or as special orders. Detergent at a cottage on a septic tank and a well gets its own section too.
Dishwasher pods vs powder: which is better?
Dishwasher pods win on convenience and powder wins on control, and neither is wrong for a modern machine. Whirlpool's help pages describe the trade in plain terms. Tablets are pre-measured and dissolve quickly, but they may not fully dissolve in shorter cycles. Powder is cost-effective, but it can clump and may not dissolve well in cooler water.
Pods and tablets
One dose, nothing to measure and nothing spilled in the cupboard. Whirlpool says quality tablets and packs reduce filming on dishes better than powder, liquid or gel, and calls them suitable for all water hardness. The catch is a fixed dose, and the film needs heat and time to break down. Not every pack carries rinse aid, so Whirlpool suggests adding it to cut down repeat film.
Powder
You set the dose, from a level tablespoon up to a full cup, which suits soft water and half loads. Whirlpool asks for it to be kept closed, in a cool, dry place. Frigidaire Canada notes that old or expired detergent might not dissolve properly, and Bosch asks for a dry dispenser before you pour.
On cost per load, I haven't printed shelf prices here, because detergent prices change too often for me to cite a fair one. The honest comparison is the price on your receipt divided by the loads printed on the box. Powder has one advantage pods can't match in soft water: you can use less of it.
Are Cascade pods bad for your dishwasher? None of the six makers' pages I read warns against a brand. Samsung's support page even uses Cascade as its example of an enzyme detergent, the kind aimed at caked-on food.
What six dishwasher makers say about pods, tabs, powder and gel
Dishwasher makers don't agree on a single detergent, but none of them rules pods out. Here is what each one's support page or manual says, read for this guide on November 1, 2026.
| Maker | What its page or manual says |
|---|---|
| Whirlpool and KitchenAid | High-quality pre-measured tablets and packs, suitable for all water hardness; add rinse aid, since not all packs contain it |
| Bosch | Fresh powdered detergent or detergent tabs; 1 tablespoon (15 ml) cleans most loads in soft water |
| Frigidaire (Canadian site) | One pack or tablet at a time; powder, gel and liquid dosed by water hardness |
| Samsung | Pods need hot water to dissolve, at least 120°F at the supply |
| LG (Canadian help library) | Dishwasher detergent only, never sink dish soap; most of its recommended detergents are gels |
Do dishwasher tablets work better than powder?
On white film, Whirlpool and KitchenAid say yes. Their pages say quality tablets and packs have been proven better than powder, liquid or gel at reducing filming. That's a maker's claim rather than an independent test, and Bosch's own manual treats powder and tabs as equals. Whirlpool counts gel among the forms tablets beat, while LG's Canadian page leads with gels from Finish and Palmolive. Gel pours like a liquid, so you control the dose the way you would with powder.
Dishwasher powder vs pods in soft Island water
Dishwasher powder earns its place in soft water, and both towns where Merit sells dishwashers have soft water. A BC Water Stewardship fact sheet on hardness sets out the Canadian drinking water categories: soft is under 60 mg/L of calcium carbonate.
| Water | Hardness | Reported |
|---|---|---|
| Campbell River city water | 23.5 mg/L | City figure for 2025 |
| Port Alberni city water | 46.39 mg/L | City average to the end of 2024 |
| BC well water | 27% of samples at 180 mg/L or more | About 12,000 samples, 1977 to 1993 |
Soft water lets detergent work easily, so the risk runs the other way. Frigidaire Canada warns that too much detergent in soft water can etch glassware, leaving a film that can't be wiped off. Bosch warns of the same damage to glassware and fine china. Its manual puts the soft-water dose at 1 tablespoon (15 ml), in a dispenser that holds 3 tablespoons (45 ml) when full. A pod is one fixed dose, and Frigidaire's advice is to use one pack or tablet at a time.
For loose detergent, Frigidaire Canada's dispenser guide doses by hardness in grains per gallon:
| Water hardness | Loose detergent |
|---|---|
| Soft, 0 to 3 grains | 4 teaspoons, first line of the cup |
| Medium hard, 4 to 8 grains | 6 teaspoons, second line |
| Hard, 9 to 12 grains | 8 teaspoons, full cup |
The utilities report milligrams per litre, and the chart is in grains. Both town supplies sit under the soft line, so I'd start at the bottom of the chart and add only if glasses come out cloudy.
A cottage on a well is a different case. The same fact sheet says groundwater tends to be harder than surface water. Whirlpool recommends a water softener once hardness reaches 15 grains per gallon. A water test tells you which end of the chart you're on, and in hard water a pod's fixed dose stops being a drawback.
Why dishwasher pods don't dissolve on a short cycle
A dishwasher pod that comes out half melted usually met a cycle too short or water too cool for it. Whirlpool's detergent guidelines say tablets may not fully dissolve in shorter cycles, leaving residue. Samsung's page says pods need hot water to dissolve completely, so the supply has to be at least 120°F (about 49°C).
Frigidaire Canada has a simple fix for a quick or fast cycle. It suggests putting the pack or tablet in the tub instead of the dispenser, so it dissolves during the shorter run. The Whirlpool portable we list names a 1-Hour Wash in its title, and a manual's cycle chart is the place to check what each program is for.
A pod stuck in a closed dispenser is a different fault. Bosch asks for tabs laid flat so they don't touch the cover. Loading around the dispenser door is getting a guide of its own, and so is a dishwasher that has started to smell.
Dishwasher detergent on a septic system at the cottage
On a septic system, pods versus powder matters less than how much water and chemistry goes down the drain at once. Since July 1, 2010, federal rules under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act have capped phosphorus in household dish-washing compounds at 0.5% by weight. The limit covers every household dish-washing compound, pods, powder and gel alike. A phosphate-free label tells you less than it once did.
The Comox Valley Regional District's septic brochure lists the don'ts plainly. It warns against cleaners and chemicals "that can kill the good bacteria in the septic tank". It also warns against overloading the system by running too many high-water use appliances at the same time.
At a cottage, I'd read that as running the dishwasher after the washing machine has finished, and measuring a dose rather than adding extra for luck. The same brochure says to have the tank pumped every 2 to 5 years. Systems installed after 2005 need regular maintenance by an Authorized Person, following the system's maintenance plan. What that plan asks of your cottage is a question for the practitioner who looks after it.
Do plumbers recommend dishwasher pods?
I couldn't find a plumbing or septic authority in BC that takes a side on pods versus powder. The guidance I did find is about water volume, harsh cleaners and detergent that dissolves fully. A dose that breaks down completely on a hot, full cycle is the one to aim for, in town or at the lake.

A countertop or 18-inch model takes less room, and the place settings on each listing tell you how many dishes it holds. The portables sit together in Merit's portable dishwasher listings. Whichever you choose, its manual has the final word on detergent. Merit backs the manufacturer warranty on everything we sell, and an appliance claim starts with the maker or the Campbell River or Port Alberni store it came from. How a warranty claim works at Merit, appliances included, is set out in our warranty guide, and cleaning the filter on a KitchenAid has a guide on the way.
When dishwasher pods are the wrong choice
Dishwasher pods are the wrong choice in a few homes, and the first is a home with small children. Health Canada says dishwasher detergent packets could pose the same risks as laundry packets. Because they're small and often brightly coloured, children and adults with cognitive impairment can mistake them for food or toys. Swallowing one can cause nausea, vomiting, coughing, choking, breathing trouble or stomach pain.
If you think a pod has harmed someone, Health Canada says to call 9-1-1 or a Poison Control Centre right away. In BC, the Drug and Poison Information Centre answers at 1-800-567-8911 or 604-682-5050. Its site says to call 9-1-1 at once if the person is unconscious, having a seizure or having trouble breathing.
- Small children, or an adult with cognitive impairment, live in the house or visit often. Health Canada's advice is to keep packets out of sight and reach and handle them with dry hands.
- Your water is very soft and the glasses matter to you. A pod's dose is fixed, and both Bosch and Frigidaire link too much detergent in soft water to etching.
- Most of your loads run on a quick cycle and you keep finding residue.
- You'd rather match the dose to a half load.
Can you use dish soap in a dishwasher?
No, and that holds for any choice of detergent. LG's Canadian help page says to use dishwasher detergent only, and never regular sink dish soap in the dispenser. Bosch's manual says the same about hand dishwashing products.
