Dining table size: how many it seats, how much room it needs, and when a leaf helps

LH Home Gia solid acacia extension dining table in warm pecan - Merit Home Furniture

For dining table size, I'd start with two numbers: how many people sit at it, and how much floor is left once their chairs pull out. Allow about 24 inches of table edge for each person, and about 36 inches of open floor beyond the table wherever a chair sits. By that rule a 36 by 60 inch table seats six and wants a room close to 9 by 11 feet.

A dining table is a table about 30 inches high, built for sitting down to a meal in ordinary chairs. A counter height table stands 36 inches, and a bar table 42. I'm Michael Ruhr, and at Merit Home Furniture in Duncan we list dining tables and sets for our four Vancouver Island stores. The sizes, seat counts and prices below come from those listings, checked on November 1, 2026, with prices before applicable taxes. Extension leaves get their own section, since a leaf turns one table into two sizes.

What size dining table do I need?

The dining table size you need is the smaller of two answers. One is the table that seats your household and usual guests, with room to set a place for each of them. The other is the largest table the room holds with the chairs pulled out. The National Kitchen & Bath Association's planning guidelines allow a knee space 24 inches wide for each diner at a 30 inch high table. The same guidelines set the floor around it, from 32 inches where nobody walks behind the chairs to 44 inches where people walk past.

So the ideal size for a dining table is whatever passes both tests. Here's the dining room table size calculator I'd use, done with a tape measure and a pencil:

  1. Measure the room. Go wall to wall both ways, then take off the depth of any buffet, hutch or baseboard heater that stands in the room.
  2. Take off the clearance. Subtract 72 inches from each measurement, which leaves 36 inches on both sides. Use 44 inches instead of 36 on any side people walk along to get to the kitchen or the patio door.
  3. Count the chairs. Divide the length that's left by 24 inches for the people down each long side, then add one for each end.
  4. Check it against a real table. The maker's seat count, where the legs sit and how wide your chairs are can each take a seat off the paper answer.

Canadel, the Quebec dining furniture maker, says much the same on its blog: subtract six feet from the length of your room to find the longest table it takes. It also notes that dining tables run from 36 to 60 inches wide, and that serving dishes down the middle want a top 42 inches wide or more. Any centrepiece for the dining table shares that middle strip.

Dining room table size guide: what each size seats, from our listings

This dining room table size guide shows the seat count printed on a Merit listing at each common size. The counts are the makers' own, and every table here is listed for our Duncan store.

Ashley Skempton dining table with six ladderback chairs, a 36 by 60 inch rectangular table - Merit Home Furniture
Table Top size Seats, per the listing
Ashley Hammis drop leaf 36 x 36 in Up to 4
Ashley Berringer drop leaf 42 x 42 in Up to 4
Ashley Realyn 48 in round, 48 x 72 in oval with its leaf Up to 6
Ashley Gretlynn 59 x 36 in Up to 6
Ashley Skempton set 60 x 36 in Up to 6, six chairs included
LH Home Gia 55 to 71 x 31 in 4 to 6
Ashley Bolanburg 72 x 40 in Up to 6
Ashley Ralene 60 to 78 x 42 in Up to 8
LH Home Oasis set 70 to 102 x 35 in 6 to 10

Read down the right-hand column and the steps are clear. Four people fit at a 36 to 42 inch top. Six need about 60 inches of length, or a 48 inch round with a leaf that turns it into an oval. Eight need 78 inches, and ten need a table past 100 inches.

What size table is a 6 seater?

A 6 seater dining table is usually 60 to 72 inches long and 36 to 40 inches wide. The average size of a 6 seater in our own listings falls inside that range. The Skempton, Caitbrook and Blondon sets each pair six chairs with a 36 by 60 inch table. The Bolanburg gives the same six people 72 by 40 inches. The Gretlynn also says up to 6 at 59 by 36 inches, an inch shorter.

Is a 42 inch dining table too small?

A 42 inch dining table is the right size for four and too small for six. The 42 inch Berringer, Gesthaven and Pharwynn tables listed for Duncan all say up to 4, and the 42 inch Wrenning and Erinberg sets come with four chairs. A 42 inch round has about 132 inches of edge, enough for four chairs at 24 inches each with plates and a serving bowl in the middle.

Round tables seat fewer than that arithmetic suggests. A 48 inch round works out to six chairs on paper, yet the 48 inch Felicia and Mia rounds carried at our Campbell River store both say four. So does the 50 inch Wittland at Port Alberni. I'd go with the maker's count, since chairs around a circle crowd together at the knees. An oval behaves more like a rectangle, which is why the Realyn seats up to 6 once its leaf is in.

Dining room table size for the room: clearance of 36 to 44 inches

Clearance around a dining table is the open floor from the table edge to the nearest wall or piece of furniture. The National Kitchen & Bath Association's guidelines put it at 36 to 44 inches wherever people move behind the chairs, with less where nobody does. At 36 inches someone can edge past a seated diner, and at 44 they can walk past.

Behind the chairs From the table edge
Nobody walks past 32 inches (813 mm)
Nobody walks past, planned for all users 36 inches (914 mm)
Someone edges past a seated diner 36 inches (914 mm)
Someone walks past a seated diner 44 inches (1118 mm)
A wheelchair passes a seated diner 60 inches (1524 mm)

The second row is the guidelines' access standard, planned for a wider range of users, including anyone using a mobility aid. With 36 inches all round, here's the largest table each room takes.

Room Largest table A Duncan listing that fits
9 x 10 ft 36 x 48 in Hammis, 36 x 36 in
10 x 10 ft 48 x 48 in Realyn as a 48 in round
10 x 12 ft 48 x 72 in Bolanburg, 40 x 72 in
11 x 14 ft 60 x 96 in Ralene with its leaf, 42 x 78 in

Rug size for a dining room table

A rug under a dining table needs to hold the chairs when they're pulled out. Canadel's rule is a rug at least 24 inches larger than the table on all four sides, which means adding 48 inches to the table's length and width. By that measure an 8 x 10 rug fits a table up to 48 inches wide and 72 inches long, a size that typically seats six. Merit doesn't carry rugs, so that one comes from elsewhere.

From the showroom floor

Before you settle on a size, I'd mark the table's outline on the floor with painter's tape and pull a chair out to it. Then walk around it carrying a plate. It takes ten minutes, and the tape tells you more than any chart in this guide. The same tape trick helps when sizing a coffee table against the sofa.

Dining table height and chair height: 30, 36 and 42 inch tables

Standard dining table height is 30 inches, give or take an inch. Of the 36 tables and sets listed for our Duncan store with a printed height, 29 stand 30 to 31 inches tall. Six are counter height at 36 inches, and one is a 42 inch bar table. Chairs and stools follow the table, so the seat heights Merit lists for Duncan fall into three bands.

Table height Top Seat heights we list
Dining 30 to 31 in 17.75 to 20 in
Counter 36 in 24 to 26 in
Bar 42 in 29.63 to 30 in

The dining chair seats run from 17.75 inches on the Ashley Gesthaven side chair ($159) to 20 inches on the Mobital Antler ($499). The Intercon Kona counter stool ($249) sits at 24 inches, and the Sunny Designs Homestead bar stool ($399) at 30.

The gap between the seat and the top matters more than either number alone, and Merit's matched pairs show it. The LH Home Irish Coast table is 30.5 inches high and its slat back chair has a 19 inch seat, an 11.5 inch gap. The Gia table is 30 inches high and its upholstered chair sits at 19.5 inches, a 10.5 inch gap. A chair borrowed from another set and well outside that range puts your elbows too high or too low.

The apron, the rail under the top, decides how much room your thighs get. The Irish Coast listing gives 26 inches from the floor to the apron, which leaves 7 inches above that 19 inch seat. If you mix armchairs in with side chairs, the ones at the ends only push in if their arms clear the apron. The National Kitchen & Bath Association plans a knee space 18 inches deep at a 30 inch table. It allows 15 inches at a 36 inch counter and 12 inches at a 42 inch one.

Extendable dining tables: leaves, sizes and prices in Duncan

An extendable dining table has a top that pulls apart to take one or more leaves, the extra boards that make it longer. A butterfly leaf is hinged and folds away inside the table. A separate leaf drops into the gap and lives in a closet between dinners. A drop leaf hangs down the side of a small table and lifts when someone extra sits down.

LH Home Irish Coast reclaimed pine extension dining table with a self-storing butterfly leaf - Merit Home Furniture
Extension table Closed, then open Price
LH Home Irish Coast small 47 to 62 x 31.5 in $1,149
LH Home Irish Coast 55 to 71 x 35 in $1,149
LH Home Gia 55 to 71 x 31 in $1,549
Ashley Wildenauer 60 to 78 x 40 in $781
Ashley Haddigan 60 to 78 x 42 in $868
Ashley Ralene 60 to 78 x 42 in $940
Ashley Realyn 48 round to 48 x 72 in oval $1,046
LH Home Oasis set 70 to 102 x 35 in $2,549

All but the Realyn have butterfly leaves that store in the table. The Realyn's leaf is a separate board: you pull both ends apart and drop it in. The Oasis price covers the table, a 55 inch bench, four side chairs and a sideboard, listed for our Duncan and Port Alberni stores. The Ashley tables at 78 inches say up to 8, and the Oasis at 102 inches says 6 to 10.

Where the legs sit matters as much as the length. The Gia's listing says its legs are fixed and only the top extends, with 48 inches between the legs on the long side. On the bigger Irish Coast that span is 43 inches. Open the leaf and the end chairs sit beyond the legs, so the corner seats are the ones to check.

If the leaf goes in every few weeks, I'd plan the room around the open size. If it's twice a year, plan around the closed size and know which chair moves out of the way. Solid wood moves with the room's humidity, so a leaf stored somewhere much damper or drier than the table may not line up as cleanly. Our guide to what damp Island winters and woodstoves do to solid wood has the humidity numbers.

Drop leaf tables for one or two most days

A drop leaf table suits a small kitchen or a household of one or two. Statistics Canada's 2021 Census counted one-person households at 29.3% of all households in Canada. Merit lists five drop leaf tables for Duncan, all saying up to 4. The Ashley Woodanville 40 inch round is $280, the Hammis 36 inch is $338 and the Ashley Shullden 43 inch is $372. The Berringer 42 inch is $396, and the Ashley Gesthaven 42 inch runs $249 to $399, depending on the finish.

Where a dining table size that fits on paper goes wrong

  • The chairs are bigger than you planned for. The Bolanburg chair is 20 inches wide and 25 inches deep, so six of them use more floor than the table alone suggests.
  • The room was measured for the closed table. An 18 inch leaf takes 18 inches out of the clearance at one end, or nine at each.
  • Counter height suits some households and not others. A 36 inch table needs a 24 inch stool, which is a climb for small children and for anyone unsteady on their feet.
  • The table won't go through the door in one piece. Most of these listings say assembly is required, and our delivery includes putting the table together in your room. Our Will it fit? checker runs the doorway and hallway numbers, and measuring a doorway for a sofa works the same for a table top.
