Mix and match dining chairs: seat heights, arm chairs, benches and the style rules

LH Home Gia upholstered dining chair in sand fabric - Merit Home Furniture

Mix and match dining chairs work when the chairs agree on height first and on style second. I'd keep every seat within about 1.5 inches of the others, with 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the tabletop. After that, colour and shape are a matter of taste.

A mixed dining set is a table with chairs that aren't all the same model, tied together by a shared colour, material or shape. Designers have made the case for years. The Canadian colour consultant Maria Killam says the pieces should be coordinated, not matching, and steers her readers away from the matching dining set.

At Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island, the dining chairs listed for our Duncan store come from six makers: LH Home, Ashley, Mako, Intercon, Mobital and Island Living. A mixed table can come from one store's listings. The seat heights, widths and prices that follow come from our own listings, checked on November 1, 2026, with prices before applicable taxes. Where a listing leaves a number out, I've said so rather than guess at it.

How do you mix and match dining chairs so they look planned?

Mismatched dining chairs look planned when one thing stays the same around the table. That can be the seat height, the colour, the wood or the outline of the back. Leah French, writing for The Spruce, suggests a common element such as the period, the undertone of the finish or the level of formality. She also warns against a table and chairs that share every element, since that only rebuilds a matching set.

The order I'd work in starts with a tape measure:

  1. Measure the table. Take the floor to the tabletop, then the floor to the underside of the apron, the rail that runs under the top.
  2. Choose the side chairs. They set the seat height that every other chair has to meet.
  3. Decide what repeats. One colour, one wood or one chair shape, carried around the table.
  4. Treat the two ends on their own. Arm chairs or fully upholstered chairs go at the heads of a rectangular table.
  5. Check the backs. Each chair back should stand at least 2 inches above the tabletop.

Seat height for mix and match dining chairs: the 10 to 12 inch gap

Seat height is the rule a mixed set can't break. The Spruce puts most dining tables at 28 to 31 inches high, with 30 the most common, and most dining chair seats at 17 to 20 inches. Most diners are comfortable with 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the tabletop, though the top's thickness, the apron and the diner's size all change it.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety describes a good seated posture with the feet flat on the floor. Hips, knees and ankles sit at about 90 degrees or a little more. A chair that's too tall for its table pushes the thighs up toward the apron. One that's too low leaves elbows up near the plate.

Here are four of the dining chairs Merit lists for our Duncan store that print a seat height. The last column is the gap each leaves under a 30 inch top, such as the LH Home Gia table or the Ashley Wildenauer table.

Chair Seat height Gap to a 30 in top
LH Home Colton, $299.00 18.5 inches 11.5 in
LH Home Irish Coast slat back, $449.00 19 in 11 in
LH Home Gia upholstered, $499.00 19.5 inches 10.5 in
Mobital Antler swivel, $499.00 20 inches 10 in

All four land inside the 10 to 12 inch range at a 30 inch table, and the tallest seat sits 1.5 inches above the lowest. At the 30.5 inch Irish Coast extension table, $1,149.00, each gap grows by half an inch. Most Ashley dining chair listings for Duncan print an overall size but no seat height. Two that do are the Ashley Fortmaine side chair at 19 inches and the Ashley Gesthaven side chair at 17.75 inches. The Gesthaven leaves 12.25 inches under a 30 inch top, just past the comfortable range. For any other Ashley chair, I'd ask us to measure the one you like before pairing it.

Upholstered seats sit lower once someone is on them. The Spruce suggests measuring a padded seat empty, then again with someone sitting, and adding the difference to the gap you want. The Gia and the Antler both have padded seats, while the Colton and the Irish Coast chair are solid wood.

Measuring to the apron when chairs come from different sets

The apron, not the tabletop, is what thighs and chair arms meet. The Spruce's method is to measure from the bottom of the apron to the top of the seat, or to the underside of the top where there's no apron. The Irish Coast listing prints 26 inches from the floor to its apron. Under it, the Mobital Antler's 20 inch seat has 6 inches of clearance, and the Colton has 7.5.

From the showroom floor

If you're adding chairs to a table you already own, I'd want three numbers from home. They're the tabletop height, the floor to the apron, and the seat height of a chair you're keeping. With those I can rule our Duncan listings in or out before we talk about a single fabric.

Arm chairs at the ends of a mixed dining table

Arm chairs at the ends are the easiest place to start a mix, and the hardest to fit. The Spruce's rule is that the tops of the arms mustn't brush the bottom of the tabletop or apron. If they do, the arms get scuffed and the diner can't pull in close enough to eat.

Shea McGee of Studio McGee likes solid upholstered chairs at the ends of a mixed table, because they give the eye a break. For a more formal look she pairs armless side chairs with arm chairs at the ends. Maria Killam describes a client's set where replacing only the two end chairs with upholstered Parsons chairs made the room feel less matched.

The Island Living Mill Bay dining armchair, in Danfur Grey on a black metal base, is on display at our Duncan store. Its listing gives 26 inches of width, 23 of depth and 32 of height, but no arm height. Island Living pieces aren't priced in our guides under the maker's internet policy, so a call gets the price. I'd bring your apron height in and have us measure the arm on the display chair.

The back matters at the ends too. The Spruce asks for chair backs at least 2 inches taller than the tabletop, or the chairs look squat. The Colton's back is 32 inches high, which clears a 30 inch table by exactly that minimum. At the 30.5 inch Irish Coast, it falls half an inch short.

Chair width per place when the dining chairs don't match

Chair width, set against the size of the dining table, decides how many mismatched chairs fit down a side. The Spruce allows each seated person a width of 24 inches, shoulder to shoulder. Its chair guide adds that chairs on a long side should slide under without bumping each other or the table's legs. At a round table it asks for at least two inches between chairs.

Chair Width Price
Mobital Antler 18 in $499.00
LH Home Colton, Gia and Irish Coast 19 in $299.00 to $499.00
Ashley Wildenauer 19 in $163.00
Ashley Bolanburg 20 in $282.00
Intercon Foundry ladder back 22.13 in $299.00
Island Living Mill Bay armchair 26 in Call for price

A 26 inch arm chair at each end with 19 inch chairs down the sides keeps the wide chairs where there's room for them. To my eye, a 22 inch chair beside a 19 inch one on the same side looks uneven, so wider chairs read better in matched pairs across from each other.

Round tables are where Shea McGee says she hardly ever mixes chairs, because a round top usually wants one continuous look. On a round table, one finish in two colours tends to work better than two shapes. With the chairs chosen, a centrepiece sized to the table comes last.

Adding a dining bench to mismatched chairs

A dining bench is the simplest way to mix seating at a Merit table or your own, since it has no back to match. Studio McGee calls a bench a foolproof addition, good in small rooms and flexible when extra guests arrive. At The Spruce's 24 inches a person, a 48 or 50 inch bench seats two adults.

These dining benches are listed for our Duncan store, with their sizes as width, depth and height:

Bench Size Price
Ashley Wildenauer bench, wood seat 48 x 16 x 19 in $249.00
Ashley Haddigan, tufted faux leather 50 x 16 x 19 in $238.00
Ashley Ralene, faux leather 50 x 16 x 19 in $238.00
Ashley Moriville, fabric with nailheads 48 x 17 x 20 in $240.00

A backless bench's height is its seat height, so these four sit at 19 or 20 inches. That puts the Moriville level with the Antler, and the other three level with the Irish Coast chair. A bench is also shallower than a chair: 16 or 17 inches deep against 22 to 25 inches for most of the chairs above.

Before mixing a bench from one collection with a table from another, I'd measure between the table legs on the long side. A bench that's longer than that gap can't tuck away when it's empty.

Style rules for mixing dining chairs: shape, colour and finish

Style rules for mismatched dining chairs come down to repeating one thing on purpose, and the Merit listings cover each approach. Designers return to three: the same shape in different colours, the same colour in different shapes, and an accent at the ends.

Same chair shape, different colour

The same chair in two finishes is the gentlest mix. The Mako Chloe slat back chair, $499.00, is listed in Antique at our Campbell River store and in Mocha at Duncan. Its sibling, the Chloe ladder back, comes in a grey stain at Duncan. Neither listing prints dimensions, and the ladder back's says Mako doesn't publish them. Mako Wood Furniture is based in Surrey, BC, and what Mako says about its wood and its workshop is in a guide of its own. Studio McGee also suggests tie-on cushions as an easy way to change the colour or fabric on chairs you already have.

Same colour, different chair shapes

One colour carried through different chair shapes is the bolder mix. Emily Henderson's team points to a dining room that kept a single palette and mixed silhouettes and materials. They also praise a pair whose two shapes land at about the same height. From the Duncan listings, the Colton's black metal legs and the Ashley Wildenauer's satin black frame share a colour while the backs differ.

Shea McGee adds a rule about weight. If the end chairs are chunky, keep the others simple and slender, so the legs don't compete. Slim metal-legged Coltons down the sides and upholstered arm chairs at the ends follow it.

Wood finishes count as colour here, and what woodstove heat and damp winters do to solid wood applies to every wooden chair at the table.

Counter stools seen from the dining table

In an open plan, the counter stools or home bar seating join the mix. Shea McGee suggests thinking through every tone and finish visible from the dining table, such as metal stools at the counter with wood at the table. Our counter and bar stools are listed separately.

Where mixed dining chairs go wrong

  • Seats far apart in height. A diner a couple of inches lower than the person beside them notices it all through the meal.
  • Arms that hit the apron. The chair stays pushed out and the arms wear where they knock.
  • A round table with two chair shapes. Shea McGee rarely does it, and a single model in two colours is the safer mix there.
  • Too many materials in a small room. Studio McGee suggests care with how many there are, such as a wood table, black chairs and a wooden bench.
  • A backless bench for anyone who pushes up on chair arms to stand. A chair with arms at the end may suit them better.

Bringing mixed dining chairs home from Duncan

From Merit's Duncan store, delivery is $150 across the Island, with setup and assembly included. That matters for the Ashley chairs and benches, whose listings mostly say assembly is required. Pickup at the Duncan store is free. If the new chairs replace old ones, we can take the old furniture away at delivery, usually for $25 to $50 a piece. What to measure and expect on delivery day is written up separately.

Lead times depend on the maker. Ashley takes 4 to 6 weeks and Mako 8 to 10, and each is then ready for pickup or delivery. For the LH Home, Intercon and Mobital chairs, ask the store. Each listing in our full run of dining chairs and the dining tables we list shows which store lists it.
