Food freezing in a refrigerator usually means the control is set colder than it needs to be, or the food sits in the stream of cold air from the freezer. I'd check both first, because Whirlpool, LG Canada, GE and Frigidaire Canada all put them near the top of their troubleshooting pages, and neither costs anything to fix.
A fridge-freezer is two compartments sharing one source of cold. Whirlpool's help pages explain that most units make cold air in the freezer and push it into the fresh food section through vents. On many models it passes a damper, a small flap between the two. Food freezes wherever that air lands too hard or lingers too long.
I'm Michael Ruhr, and I write these guides for Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island. I work the floor in Duncan, which no longer carries appliances, so Merit's refrigerators are carried at our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores, the appliance end of the business. Health Canada's line is the one to hold: keep the fridge set at 4°C (40°F) or lower and the freezer at -18°C (0°F) or lower. Every fix below stays inside it.
Why is my food freezing in my refrigerator? The causes, most likely first
The causes of food freezing in a refrigerator run from a dial you can turn tonight to a part only a technician should replace. The makers' pages put the free checks first.
| Cause | What you notice | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Control set too cold | Slush or ice on several shelves | One step warmer, then wait a day |
| Food against a vent | Freezing at the back of one shelf | Move it forward and clear the vent |
| Too full or nearly empty | Freezing beside vents, or in idle drawers | Leave gaps, but keep it stocked |
| Cold garage or room | Freezing that starts with the cold weather | Move it indoors, or use a garage-ready model |
| Ice maker on with no water line | Frozen crisper drawers, a buzzing noise | Switch the ice maker off |
| Damper or thermistor fault | Freezing that outlasts every fix above | Book a service call |
| Worn or dirty door seal | Frost and moisture inside | Clean or replace the gasket |
If your fridge is freezing food, this is the order I'd work through it, one change at a time:
- Read a thermometer, not the dial. I'd stand one in a glass of water on the middle shelf overnight, since the water shows what your food is getting.
- Warm the control one step. Whirlpool and Frigidaire Canada allow 24 hours before judging; Samsung Canada says up to 28 hours.
- Clear the vents. Pull food off the back wall and out of the air coming from the freezer.
- Check the room. A cold garage or porch throws the controls off.
- Check the ice maker and the level. Whirlpool lists both.
- Then call for service. LG Canada points to a faulty temperature sensor at that stage.
A refrigerator control set too cold, and how far to turn it
A refrigerator control set too cold is the first thing the makers check, and the freezer control counts too. Whirlpool's page says a freezer set too low can make the fresh food section too cold, because air flows between them. Frigidaire Canada says the same link runs the other way on its top-freezer models: the fridge control changes both compartments.
Whirlpool's factory settings are 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. LG Canada notes that most fridges arrive with the fresh food side at 37°F, which isn't far above freezing. If food still freezes there, LG suggests raising it to 39 to 40°F, which keeps you under Health Canada's line.
What number should your fridge be set at?
On a digital display, aim a degree or two under 4°C. On a dial, the numbers are steps rather than degrees. GE's dial models ask for "C" and "5", or "5" and "5". On some Frigidaire models a fridge control turned to "0" stops the compressor, and Frigidaire says to unplug the fridge to switch it off completely.
| Source | Fridge | Freezer |
|---|---|---|
| Health Canada, the safety ceiling | 4°C (40°F) or lower | -18°C (0°F) or lower |
| LG Canada, ideal setting | 3°C (37°F) | -18°C (0°F) |
| Samsung Canada, ideal setting | 3°C (38°F) | -19°C (-2°F) |
| GE, digital models | 37 to 42°F | 0 to 8°F |
Food blocking the air vent from the freezer, and other load problems in the fridge
Food blocking the air vent is what LG Canada calls a major factor in fridge freezing. The air coming in from the freezer is cold enough to freeze, and it enters through vents whose position varies by model. Whirlpool says anything placed right in that airflow may freeze, and asks that eggs and liquids stay out of it. Where everything else belongs is laid out in a shelf-by-shelf fridge plan.
LG Canada suggests moving bean sprouts, tofu and other foods that freeze easily to the front of the shelf. One LG customer stopped the freezing by staggering split shelves so the air could move. GE wants 6 inches of clear space around the fresh food temperature sensor on its older French-door models, a slatted dome on the ceiling above the top shelf. Crowd that sensor and it reads the wrong temperature.
The amount of food matters in both directions. Whirlpool warns that food packed against the back and side walls blocks the vents. GE says the fresh food section and its drawers should be at least half full, since a near-empty fridge has too little in it to absorb the cold.
Why are vegetables freezing in the crisper drawer?
Vegetables freezing in a crisper drawer often trace back to a fridge that has sat unused or a drawer that's nearly empty. Frigidaire Canada explains that freezer air comes through the damper and can chill the crispers in a unit that hasn't been used for a while. It expects that to settle once the fridge is in regular use, and otherwise suggests nudging the drawer's humidity setting up. GE adds that a drawer with its own temperature control can be set warmer.
A refrigerator in a cold garage on Vancouver Island
A standard refrigerator in a cold garage can freeze food because the room ends up running it. A fridge can only remove heat, and Whirlpool says cold weather changes how often the compressor cycles. GE goes further: at 32°F there may be no cooling at all.
| Maker | Room temperature the fridge is built for |
|---|---|
| Whirlpool, standard models | 13 to 43°C (55 to 110°F) |
| LG Canada | 13 to 43°C (55 to 110°F) |
| GE, standard models | Not below 60°F, unless the manual says otherwise |
| GE Garage Ready top-freezers | As low as 38°F and as hot as 110°F |
| Whirlpool models with a Garage Mode | Garage Mode is for a space that stays between 38 and 55°F |
An unheated Island garage can sit below those floors for much of the year. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals for Campbell River put the daily average under 13°C in eight months, October through May. The January daily high there is 5.6°C. An insulated, heated garage changes things, and the manual decides whether it counts.
Merit's refrigerator listings show 127 fridges carried at Campbell River, Port Alberni or both, and 13 of them have Garage Ready in the listing title. Here are five, with prices read on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes.
| Listing | Carried at | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Frigidaire top-freezer, Garage Ready, white | Campbell River and Port Alberni | $779 |
| Amana top-freezer, Garage Ready | Campbell River | $949.99 to $999.99 |
| Midea top-mount, Garage Ready | Port Alberni | $979.99 to $1,029.99 |
| Frigidaire bottom-freezer, Garage Ready | Port Alberni | $1,199 to $1,299 |
| Frigidaire Garage-Ready upright refrigerator | Campbell River and Port Alberni | $2,599 |
Each maker sets its own garage range, so I'd read the manual for the exact floor before any of these goes into an unheated space. Wine coolers raise the same question, and the garage wording in Silhouette's manuals is stricter. For a fridge that stays in the kitchen, compare every fridge we carry.
Faulty damper, thermistor or door seal: when a freezing fridge needs service
A faulty damper or thermistor becomes the likely cause once the settings, vents, load and room all check out. A thermistor is the temperature sensor that tells the control board how cold the fridge is. LG Canada says freezing that persists after its steps could mean a sensor reading incorrectly or an evaporator working too hard, and that a technician will be needed. A damper that sticks open would keep letting freezer air in.
Two checks belong before that call. Whirlpool asks that the fridge stand level, with shims if the floor slopes. It also links a door that doesn't seal to frost build-up and moisture, and asks that the gasket be kept free of food and dirt. When frost forms on food near the door, I'd look at the seal before the controls.
If the fridge came from us, Merit backs the maker's warranty and orders the parts. Frigidaire Canada's standard limited warranty on most of its refrigerators is 1 year, and each maker sets its own terms. SmartOne, from Zucora, is the extended plan we offer. Who covers what between a maker and Merit has a guide of its own, and so does what an Island store handles after the sale.
Is it okay to eat food that froze in the fridge?
Food that froze in the fridge stayed colder than Health Canada's danger zone, which runs between 4°C (40°F) and 60°C (140°F). The cost, if any, is in how the food looks and feels once it thaws. Health Canada calls the fridge the safest place to defrost any food. It also says not to re-freeze food once it has completely defrosted. Partly defrosted food can go back in the freezer only if it still has ice crystals on its surface.
I'd use thawed food soon. If you're unsure whether a food is safe, especially for someone pregnant, elderly or unwell, ask your doctor or a public health nurse.
Fixes that make a freezing refrigerator worse, and when to replace it
- Turning the fridge warmer past 4°C. Move the food first; a thermometer reading above Health Canada's line means the fix went too far.
- Adding a garage heater kit. GE says aftermarket garage or heater kits shouldn't be used.
- Changing two settings at once. With a day or more to settle, there's no telling which change worked.
How long does a fridge usually last?
GE Appliances says it isn't possible to determine an appliance's lifespan, even approximately, because use, location and care vary so much. I'd judge a freezing fridge by the repair quote and the warranty left on it. As for which refrigerator brand to stay away from, I won't name one. What I'd weigh is whether a technician on your part of the Island services that brand, then each refrigerator brand's reliability and warranty.

Calling Campbell River or Port Alberni about a refrigerator
I work in Duncan, so a fridge question goes to the store that carries it. Ask which refrigerators are set up on the floor before you make the drive, and have your model number handy for a service question. Nobody will push you to decide on the phone.
Ask Campbell River about a freezing fridge, (250) 286-0868, or ask Port Alberni, (250) 724-6644
You'll find us at 1300 A Homewood Rd in Campbell River and 2935 Third Ave in Port Alberni. A listing marked call to order goes through our special-order line, (250) 746-5527. The rest of Merit's writing on appliances sits on one page.
