Best refrigerator brand in Canada: what the reliability data shows, and the warranty behind each name

Whirlpool French door refrigerator in fingerprint-resistant stainless steel - Merit Home Furniture

I can't name one best refrigerator brand in Canada, because the Consumer Reports and Yale Appliance reliability data rank brands within one style of fridge. The leader changes with the style. Merit's Campbell River and Port Alberni stores carry fridges from 13 brands, so I have no reason to steer you toward one of them.

A refrigerator reliability rating estimates how many fridges of one brand will need a repair within a set time. It comes from owner surveys or a store's own service records. The two published sources worth reading are Consumer Reports, which surveys its members, and Yale Appliance, a Boston retailer that counts its own repair calls. Neither is Canadian, and both explain what they counted.

I'm Michael Ruhr, co-owner of Merit Home Furniture on Vancouver Island, and I've set the rankings beside what does differ by brand and can be checked. That means the warranty each maker prints for Canada, who owns which name, and what Merit lists at each store, with prices. I work at Merit Duncan, which no longer sells appliances. Every fridge here is carried at Campbell River or Port Alberni, our appliance stores on the Island, or comes in as a special order.

Which is the best refrigerator brand in Canada?

The best refrigerator brand in Canada depends on the style of fridge you want and on who can fix it where you live. Consumer Reports sorts its brand results into top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, side-by-side and built-in fridges. A brand can do well in one group and poorly in the next.

Its report updated October 15, 2026 gives Samsung French-door fridges poor ratings for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. The same report says LG French-doors, side-by-sides and bottom-freezers are more likely to have compressor problems than models from most other brands. The public part of the report doesn't give the other brands' results; those are for members.

Yale Appliance's 2026 report looks at one style only, French door fridges built to sit flush with the cabinets. In first-year repairs, LG came lowest, then GE and Bosch. Over five years of Yale's records, Bosch had the fewest compressor failures of any brand it tracks.

Here's how I'd read it. For the lowest chance of an early repair, pick the simplest fridge in the style you need, from a brand with long sealed-system cover in Canada. Then find out whether an authorized servicer works near you. On the Island, that last check can matter more than a few points on a chart.

Most reliable refrigerator brand: what each source measures

The most reliable refrigerator brand changes with whose numbers you read, because the two main sources count different things. Here they are side by side.

Source What it counts Its limits
Consumer Reports, updated October 15, 2026 Members' reports on 85,290 refrigerators with icemakers bought new between 2016 and 2026, from its three latest annual surveys Members of a U.S. nonprofit. Ten brands surveyed. Full scores are for members.
Yale Appliance, updated October 21, 2026 First-year service calls divided by units sold, drawn from 33,190 calls in a year; over 2,000 flush French door fridges ranked One retailer, around Boston and Cape Cod. Only brands it sells. One style of fridge.

The ten brands in the Consumer Reports survey are Bosch, Frigidaire, GE, Kenmore, KitchenAid, LG, Maytag, Samsung, Sub-Zero and Whirlpool. Yale's first-year service rates for its flush French door group came out like this:

Brand First-year service rate
LG 10.1%
GE Appliances 12.1%
Bosch 12.7%
Café 16.9%
Thermador 18.2%
Group average 12%

A brand needed at least 150 of these fridges sold to make Yale's list. Yale left Samsung out, saying service coverage is uneven in parts of New England. It also left out the Whirlpool family, Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana and JennAir, finding reliability inconsistent across their models, though it says some units perform fine. Those are one retailer's calls for its own area. GE, Café and Thermador aren't brands Merit lists.

What brand of refrigerator has the fewest problems?

No brand gets through without problems, because a fridge is one of the more repair-prone things in a kitchen. By Consumer Reports' estimate, 30 percent of fridges with an icemaker run into some kind of problem within their first five years. Of all the new fridges in its survey bought since 2016, 46 percent had at least one specific problem. In Yale's five-year records, compressors failed on 1.1% of LG fridges and about 0.4% of Bosch fridges, and some brands passed 2.5%.

Is LG or GE the better refrigerator?

In Yale's first-year figures, LG's flush French door fridges needed service less often than GE's, 10.1% against 12.1%. Yale's case for GE is service, since it calls GE one of the few major brands with a factory-controlled service network. Yale is describing service around Boston, and Merit doesn't list GE, so I can't tell you how GE repairs work on the Island. LG Canada's terms say in-home warranty service reaches 150 km from the nearest LG authorized service centre.

How long should a fridge last, and what breaks first?

Consumer Reports says buyers might expect a new fridge to last about a decade, though its survey shows many need a repair long before that. Yale puts the life of a flush French door fridge at 7 to 12 years.

The parts that fail first are the ones that make ice and pour water. Consumer Reports names icemakers and water or ice dispensers as the two problems its members report most often. Broken compressors and temperature faults come up less. A temperature fault can mean a fridge running warm, or food freezing in the refrigerator. Yale's records point the same way. It calls an ice and water dispenser on the door the biggest reliability risk. Ice is made in a freezing zone and poured through a warmer one, Yale explains, with a long chute, motors and seals in between.

Whirlpool French door refrigerator in fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, water dispenser inside - Merit Home Furniture

That gives a fair test for any brand. On our listings, the Whirlpool French door with interior water, at $2,099.99, pours filtered water inside the fridge and keeps its icemaker in the freezer. The Maytag French door with in-door ice, at $2,499.99, has an ice and water dispenser outside and its ice maker in the fridge door. One gives up a little convenience for fewer moving parts in the door, and the other makes the opposite trade. Both prices are before applicable taxes.

When an old fridge is replaced, Natural Resources Canada suggests recycling it instead of moving it to the garage or the cabin. By NRCan's figures, an old fridge uses about 35% more energy, on average, than an ENERGY STAR certified one. A certified fridge uses 9% less energy, on average, than a standard model. The EnerGuide label gives each one's yearly use.

Refrigerator warranties in Canada, brand by brand

Refrigerator warranties in Canada give at least a year of cover on most models from every maker below. What differs is the sealed system. That's the compressor, condenser, evaporator, dryer and the tubing joining them, the closed loop that carries the refrigerant, and it's the costly repair. These are the terms each maker prints for Canada.

Brand Canadian warranty terms
Whirlpool 1 year parts and labour. Sealed system, parts and labour, in years two through five, on French door, bottom-freezer and side-by-side fridges.
Maytag 1 year parts and labour. The compressor, parts only, in years two through ten.
KitchenAid 1 year parts and labour, or 2 years on built-in fridges. Sealed system, parts and labour, in years two through five.
Amana 1 year parts and labour. The booklet for our Amana bottom-freezer lists no longer term.
LG 1 year parts and labour, or 2 years on LG Studio. 7 year sealed system and 10 years compressor, parts only, depending on the model.
Samsung 12-month parts and labour warranty, with a 10-year parts warranty on digital inverter compressors.
Frigidaire 1 year on most refrigerators. Frigidaire Professional single-door fridges get 2 years; the page lists no term for other single-door models.
Bosch 1 year parts and labour. Non-electronic parts, parts only, in the 2nd year. Electronic parts, parts only, from the 2nd to 5th year. Stainless rust-through, parts only, for life.
Danby Our listing for the Designer all-fridge says 18 months parts and labour, in-home service.
Midea Our listing for the 50/50 Flex says 2-year limited parts and labour.

"Parts only" means the maker supplies the part and you pay the technician. Under LG's compressor cover, a compressor that fails in year six is a free part and a paid repair. Only the Whirlpool and KitchenAid booklets pay labour on the sealed system into its fifth year. Bosch and LG say terms vary by model, so the booklet in the box has the final word.

Two lines in the Whirlpool family booklets matter on the Island. They exclude rust or discoloration from "high salt concentrations, high moisture or humidity". They also exclude travel costs "in remote locations where an authorized Maytag servicer is not available", and the Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Amana booklets say the same of their own servicers. The Whirlpool family booklets and LG's terms ask for proof of purchase, and LG's cover is for the original owner only.

Merit's warranty page says an appliance claim starts with the maker, or with the Campbell River or Port Alberni store that sold it. The same page on claims and extended cover describes SmartOne by Zucora, the extended plan we offer, which works on any item.

Before you order

If I were buying a fridge for a house in Tofino or Port Hardy, I'd phone the maker's Canadian service line with the model number first. I'd ask for the nearest authorized servicer by road, not by map. That answer says more about the next ten years than the badge on the door.

Who makes Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana and Frigidaire?

Whirlpool makes Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana, and Frigidaire belongs to Electrolux. The Canadian warranty booklets say so plainly. The Maytag booklet names the "Maytag brand of Whirlpool Corporation or Whirlpool Canada, LP", and the other three booklets use the same wording for their own names. The Electrolux Group lists Electrolux, AEG and Frigidaire as its main brands, with Frigidaire as its mass-market name for North America.

Company Fridge brands on Merit's site
Whirlpool Corporation, Whirlpool Canada LP Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana
Electrolux Group Frigidaire, with its Gallery and Professional lines, and Electrolux
LG Electronics LG and LG Studio
BSH Home Appliances Ltd Bosch, including Benchmark
Samsung Electronics Canada Samsung
Midea Group Midea
Danby, Guelph, Ontario Danby

Sharing a parent company doesn't mean sharing a warranty. Maytag and Amana both belong to Whirlpool, yet Maytag's compressor cover runs to year ten and Amana's booklet stops after year one. Marathon, Epic and Unique are also on our list, and I couldn't confirm their owners from pages I could read, so they're not in the table.

What brand of fridge is made in Canada?

None of the makers' pages I read says a fridge we list is built in Canada. Danby comes closest on ownership. Its About page calls Danby "a Canadian-owned appliance manufacturer and distributor", with its head office in Guelph, Ontario. It lists six facilities, two of them in Guelph, without saying what each one builds. A Canadian head office and a Canadian assembly line are separate facts, and how to test a made-in-Canada claim walks through the rules. For a single model, the maker's customer line can say where that unit was built.

Merit's refrigerators by brand at Campbell River and Port Alberni

Merit's live listings on November 1, 2026 held 390 fridges. Of those, 126 are carried at our Campbell River or Port Alberni store, from 13 brands, and 264 are special orders that no store keeps. Here are the 126 by brand, with listed prices before applicable taxes. A fridge listed at both stores counts in each store column.

Samsung French door refrigerator with an inside Beverage Center and autofill water pitcher - Merit Home Furniture
Brand Listings (Campbell River, Port Alberni) Price range
Frigidaire 34 (16, 30) $779.00 to $4,649.00
Danby 17 (5, 16) $249.99 to $1,509.99
LG 16 (9, 12) $1,099.99 to $3,499.99
Whirlpool 12 (10, 5) $1,599.99 to $2,799.99
Marathon 10 (2, 10) $999.00 to $1,699.00
Midea 9 (1, 8) $729.99 to $2,499.99
Bosch 6 (6, 0) $2,199.00 to $11,999.00
Samsung 6 (4, 2) $1,049.99 to $3,549.00
Maytag 6 (4, 3) $1,899.99 to $5,549.00
Amana 4 (2, 3) $949.99 to $1,749.99
Epic 4 (3, 2) $549.00 to $1,599.00
KitchenAid 1 (1, 0) $3,699.99 to $3,799.99
Unique 1 (0, 1) $2,199.00

The Frigidaire count includes its Gallery and Professional lines, LG includes LG Studio, and the top Bosch price is a Benchmark built-in. Danby's lowest prices are small all-fridge units, and Unique's one listing is an off-grid propane fridge. The special orders lean the other way. KitchenAid has 47 of them and Whirlpool 59, against one and 12 carried in the stores. A special-order listing shows Call to order (250) 746-5527, and the order goes through that line.

Refrigerator storage features to compare between brands

Refrigerator storage is where brands differ day to day, and each listing prints what's inside. These are the features I'd line up:

  • Crispers that hold humidity. The Frigidaire Gallery bottom-freezer, $1,699.00, has two crispers with automatic humidity control plus a deli drawer.
  • A drawer that changes temperature. The LG French 4-door, $2,799.99, has a Full-Convert Drawer that runs as fridge or freezer.
  • A whole compartment that converts. Each half of the Midea 50/50 Flex, $1,149.99 to $1,249.99, runs as a fridge from 0°C to 10°C, or as a freezer.
  • Water kept inside. The Samsung French door with a Beverage Center, $2,199.99, fills a water pitcher that sits inside the fridge.

Finish is the other thing that varies by brand. Our listings run from plain white to fingerprint-resistant stainless, and the KitchenAid French door also comes in Juniper and Black Ore. The door styles themselves, top-freezer, French door and the rest, are a separate choice from the brand, and I've left them for another guide.

Maytag for a busy family kitchen

For a family that goes through milk by the jug, Maytag's listings read well, and its warranty backs the compressor with parts through year ten. The Maytag French door with a water dispenser, $2,099.99 at Port Alberni, has humidity-controlled crispers and a full-width Wide-N-Fresh deli drawer. The Maytag top-freezer with an ice maker, $3,399.00, has four adjustable gallon door bins and a dairy centre. Six Maytag fridges are carried at the two stores, and 15 more come as special orders.

Questions to ask before buying a Samsung refrigerator

  1. Where is the ice made? Icemakers and dispensers are the two problems Consumer Reports members report most. The Samsung Bespoke French door, $3,549.00, keeps an autofill pitcher and a dual ice maker inside.
  2. What does the compressor cover pay for? Samsung Canada gives 12 months on parts and labour, then parts only on a digital inverter compressor for the rest of its ten years.
  3. Who repairs it near you? Yale suggests confirming who services a Samsung, the usual wait and the parts supply in your area before buying.
  4. Is the Wi-Fi worth it to you? Yale counts Wi-Fi modules and control boards among the extra parts that can fail.

Where refrigerator brand rankings can mislead you

  • None of the reliability data is Canadian. Consumer Reports is a U.S. nonprofit surveying its own members, and Yale counts its own repairs around Boston and Cape Cod.
  • A ranking covers one style. Yale's 2026 figures are for flush French door fridges only, and a brand's top-freezer may hold up differently.
  • Several brands have no published figure at all. Amana, Danby, Midea, Marathon and Epic aren't in the Consumer Reports survey list, and Yale doesn't rank them, so there's no fair reliability number to give.
  • Distance changes the warranty. LG's in-home service stops at 150 km from its nearest authorized centre, and the Whirlpool family won't pay remote travel costs. From the West Coast or the North Island, ask before you order.

Fridge delivery, installation and the old fridge

Fridge delivery and installation are set by the store that sells it, and Merit's appliance delivery terms aren't published yet. Ask Campbell River or Port Alberni about the charge when you call for a price, and whether they'll take the old fridge away. Each listing prints its dimensions, which helps when checking doors and hallways on the way in.

For an old fridge you haul yourself, BC's Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable lists collection sites where large appliances "can be dropped off for recycling at no charge". Its locator includes the CVRD's Bings Creek Recycling Centre in Duncan, the Campbell River Waste Management Centre and a site in Port Alberni.

Asking about a fridge at Merit's Campbell River and Port Alberni stores

Merit's fridges are carried at two stores. Campbell River, at 1300 A Homewood Rd, is open 10 to 5, Monday to Saturday. Port Alberni, at 2935 Third Ave, is open 9:30 to 5:30, Monday to Saturday. I write from Duncan, so those are the two stores I'd send you to.

Keep the model number from our listing beside the phone. Ask which fridges are set up to look at, what delivery costs, and who services that brand near your home. A special order goes through (250) 746-5527, the number on its listing. Nobody will push you toward one brand.

Phone Campbell River about a fridge, (250) 286-0868 or phone Port Alberni, (250) 724-6644

Every fridge on our site is in the refrigerator collection, and French door models have a page of their own. Our other appliance writing is gathered on one page for every appliance guide. The servicer distances in our Silhouette guide show how far some Island towns sit from a repair shop. Wine coolers measured against beverage centres covers the smaller fridges.
