A dual fuel range is one range with gas burners on the cooktop and an electric oven below them. I'd point it at a cook who wants a live flame for searing and simmering, plus an oven that bakes evenly. It costs more than an all-gas or all-electric range. It also needs two hookups behind it: a gas line for the burners and a heavy-duty electrical circuit for the oven.
So the kitchen has to have both services before one goes in. I'm Michael Ruhr from Merit Home Furniture, and I work at Merit Duncan, which has stepped back from appliances. On Vancouver Island, the one dual fuel range a Merit store carries right now is at Port Alberni. The rest come in as special orders, as many of Merit's gas and electric kitchen appliances do.
What is a dual fuel range, and what does dual fuel mean?
A dual fuel range means two fuels in one appliance. Natural gas or propane feeds the burners on top, and electricity heats the oven. Electricity also runs the clock, the lights and the convection fan. The word "dual" only describes where the cooking heat comes from. Some shops sell the same appliance as a dual fuel range cooker.
From the front, a dual fuel range looks like any other range. The difference sits at the back, where a gas pipe and a thick electrical cord both connect. On Merit's product pages the fuel row reads "Dual Fuel (NG)" for most of them, which means the range leaves the factory set up for natural gas.
What are the three different types of stoves?
The three types of stoves are gas, electric and dual fuel. Electric covers coil tops, smooth glass tops and induction. A gas range burns gas in the oven as well as on the cooktop, while dual fuel splits the work between the two fuels. The cost table further down sets the three side by side.
Why does a dual fuel range pair a gas cooktop with an electric oven?
A gas cooktop and an electric oven each do one job well. Gas burners answer the knob right away, and you can see the size of the flame. That makes it easy to bring a pot to a hard boil and then drop it to a bare simmer. The Electrolux 30 in. dual fuel range has two burners that run from 18,000 BTU down to 750 BTU. BTU means British thermal units per hour, the measure of how much heat a burner gives off.
An electric oven with a convection fan holds an even temperature from rack to rack. Even heat matters most for baking, where a cool corner shows up as a pale cookie or a lopsided cake. KitchenAid describes its own dual fuel models as pairing "the precise control of a gas cooking surface" with the even baking of an electric oven.
Which dual fuel range? Merit's listings side by side
Merit lists 14 dual fuel ranges, and a few of those listings are colour versions of the same model. One is carried at our Port Alberni store and the rest are special orders. The table picks six standard models, with prices as listed on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes.
| Range | Price and where | What the listing shows |
|---|---|---|
| Electrolux 30 in. freestanding | $3,899.00, carried at Port Alberni | 5 burners, two at 18,000 BTU; 4.6 cu. ft. convection oven; 240 V, 30 A; LP conversion kit included |
| KitchenAid 30 in. slide-in | $2,999.99, special order | 5 burners; convection oven plus a separate baking drawer; 240 V, 40 A |
| KitchenAid 30 in. double oven | $3,199.99, special order | 5 burners from 5,000 to 17,000 BTU; two ovens, the upper one 2.5 cu. ft.; 240 V, 40 A |
| Bosch 800 Series 30 in. slide-in | $5,899.00, special order | 5 burners; 4.6 cu. ft. convection oven; LP convertible; 208/240 V, 30 A |
| Electrolux 36 in. freestanding | $4,899.00, special order | 6 burners; 4.4 cu. ft. convection oven; 360 lb |
| Frigidaire Professional 36 in. | $5,999.00, special order | 6 burners; dual burners from 18,000 down to 750 BTU; 4.4 cu. ft. oven |
For a standard 30 in. opening, the Electrolux is the one a store has on hand, and its propane kit comes in the box. The KitchenAid slide-in is the lowest price on the list. Its baking drawer bakes at a different temperature from the main oven, which helps at holiday dinners. The Bosch costs more; it's a full-depth slide-in that, in Bosch's words, fits any freestanding range cutout.
Is there a GE Profile dual fuel range at Merit?
No. GE Profile isn't a brand on our listings, so I can't quote a price or a spec for its dual fuel models. If a GE Profile is the one you have in mind, its burner BTUs, oven size and circuit rating are the figures to set against the rows above.
Dual fuel range cost compared with gas and electric ranges
A dual fuel range costs more than either single-fuel range of the same width. On Merit's listings, the lowest priced 30 in. dual fuel range is about four times the price of the lowest priced electric one.
| Kind of 30 in. range | Lowest listed price | Hookups behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Electric (coil or glass) | $749.99, the Midea freestanding, special order | A range circuit only, no gas |
| Gas | $1,049.99, the Amana gas range, carried at Port Alberni | A gas line, plus an ordinary 120 V, 15 A outlet for the controls |
| Dual fuel | $2,999.99, the KitchenAid slide-in, special order | A gas line and a heavy-duty range circuit |
The fairest comparison is one maker's two versions of the same range. Campbell River carries the KitchenAid 30 in. commercial-style gas range at $6,799.99. The KitchenAid 30 in. pro-style dual fuel range in stainless lists at $7,499.99. Both have two 20,000 BTU burners and a 4.1 cu. ft. oven, so the electric oven adds $700 here.
So are dual fuel ranges worth it? For someone who bakes every week and already has gas at the wall, I think the extra money buys something real. For someone who mostly cooks on the burners, an all-gas range does the same stovetop work for less. And if there's no gas in the house yet, the cost of running a line belongs in the sum too.
What a dual fuel range needs: gas line, 240 V circuit and permits
A dual fuel range needs a gas supply and a 240-volt circuit in the wall behind it. The Electrolux installation manual asks for a grounded 120/240 volt outlet, and says a qualified electrician installs one where there isn't one. An all-gas range swapped for a dual fuel one is the usual surprise: the old range ran on an ordinary outlet, and the new one needs a range circuit.
- Check the circuit. Read the rating on the listing. The ones that print it call for 30 or 40 amps at 240 V, and the two standard KitchenAid models list 40 A.
- Check the gas. KitchenAid's instructions call for a new CSA-approved gas supply line, with a manual shut-off valve in a spot that's easy to reach.
- Get the permits. Technical Safety BC lists installing or replacing a "range or cooktop" as gas work that needs a permit. Adding or moving an electrical outlet needs an electrical permit as well.
- Book the inspection. Under a homeowner gas permit, at least one inspection has to be requested within 180 days of the permit being issued.
Homeowners can usually apply for their own gas permit. Owners of a strata unit or a duplex, and anyone running a business from home, have to hire a licensed contractor, who pulls the permit. Technical Safety BC's homeowner gas permit page has the full list.
Does a double oven range need two outlets?
No. A double oven range runs both ovens from one cord on one circuit. The KitchenAid 30 in. double oven dual fuel range on our listings is rated 240 V, 40 A, the same as the single-oven KitchenAid slide-in. The breaker size comes from the rating plate on the range, so that's what an electrician reads before choosing one.
Natural gas or propane for a dual fuel range on Vancouver Island
A dual fuel range on Vancouver Island can run on natural gas or on propane. FortisBC delivers natural gas on the Island, and its Customer Choice page lists Vancouver Island among the regions where that program is available. Gas mains don't run down every road, though, and where there's none, a range can run on propane from a tank. Merit can't tell you whether a main runs past your house. FortisBC can.
Most dual fuel ranges on our listings ship set for natural gas and switch to propane with a conversion kit. The Electrolux 30 in. includes its conversion kit, and the Bosch and the KitchenAid pro-style models are listed as LP convertible. KitchenAid's installation instructions are plain about who does it. Conversion "must be done by a qualified service technician," they say. It's gas work, so the permit rules above apply to it too.
A cabin with propane and no reliable power is a different case. A dual fuel oven can't bake without electricity. Port Alberni carries the Unique off-grid 30 in. propane range at $2,749.00. It's all gas, set for propane, and lights with a 1.5V battery ignition, so it needs no household power at all.
Professional-style dual fuel ranges: BTUs, widths and heavier grates
A professional-style range is a home range built to look and cook like a restaurant one. On our listings that means higher-output burners, continuous cast iron grates you can slide a pot across, deeper bodies and a lot more weight. The KitchenAid pro-style line comes in all three widths.
| Width | KitchenAid pro-style dual fuel | Burners, oven and weight |
|---|---|---|
| 30 in. | From $7,499.99, special order | 4 burners, two at 20,000 BTU; 4.1 cu. ft. oven; 299 lb |
| 36 in. | From $8,999.99, special order | 6 burners, two at 20,000 BTU; 5.1 cu. ft. oven; 351 lb |
| 48 in. | From $13,299.99, special order | 6 burners plus an electric griddle; two ovens, 6.3 cu. ft. in all; 470.4 lb |
For scale, the Amana gas range in the cost table tops out at 12,500 BTU on its largest burner. A 20,000 BTU burner brings a big pot of water to the boil much sooner, and it gives a wok more of the heat it wants.
The widths matter more than the burners when planning. A 30 in. pro-style range drops into a standard range opening. A 36 in. or 48 in. range needs the cabinets cut or rebuilt around it. Depth catches people too. The KitchenAid 36 in. measures 30.5 in. deep against a 24 in. cutout, so it sticks out past the counters. And at 470.4 lb, the 48 in. is worth measuring against every doorway on the way in.
Where a dual fuel range falls short, indoor air included
A dual fuel range has real drawbacks, and the first is the money. Two hookups mean two trades and two permits if the kitchen has neither, on top of a higher price than an all-gas or all-electric range.
Why some people are getting rid of gas stoves
The gas half of a dual fuel range carries the same indoor air concerns as any gas cooktop. Health Canada says cooking on a gas stove can give off nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. It adds that nitrogen dioxide can reduce lung function and make asthma worse. Concerns like these are part of why some people are getting rid of gas stoves, and induction ranges are on our listings for anyone leaning that way.
Health Canada's advice for gas cooking is practical. It recommends a range hood fan that vents to the outside and cooking on the back burners. Its cooking factsheet says running the hood on high, at 300 cubic feet/minute, can cut exposure to cooking pollutants by more than 80% compared with slower speeds. It also suggests having gas appliances inspected at least once a year and keeping a carbon monoxide alarm in the home. If anyone in the house has asthma or another lung condition, please ask your doctor about cooking with gas before choosing.
A few more limits are worth knowing:
- A double oven range splits its capacity. The KitchenAid double oven's upper oven holds 2.5 cu. ft., too small for a big roasting pan, and the lower oven sits close to the floor.
- Pro-style ranges are deep and heavy, and a wider one means a wider hood. Health Canada says a hood should fully extend over the burners.

Asking about a dual fuel range at Port Alberni or Campbell River
Since Merit Duncan has stepped back from appliances, range questions go to our other stores. The Electrolux 30 in. dual fuel range is listed at Port Alberni, so a call before the drive tells you whether one is there to look at. Campbell River carries the KitchenAid commercial-style gas range, which shows the burners and grates of the pro-style dual fuel version. Our guide to the four showrooms explains how the stores split the Island, and kitchens in the Comox Valley now buy appliances through Campbell River.
- Port Alberni: 2935 Third Ave, the store that lists the Electrolux 30 in.
