A mattress for side sleepers is one soft enough on top for the shoulder and hip to sink in, and firm enough underneath to hold the waist up. That combination keeps the spine in a straight line from the neck to the hips. For a side sleeper who weighs 130 to 230 pounds, Sleep Foundation's firmness guide puts it at 4 to 5 on a 10-point scale, medium soft to medium.
Lighter side sleepers can go as soft as 3, and above 230 pounds the range climbs to 6 to 7, medium firm to firm. The constructions that help are a pillow top or euro top over pocketed coils, a memory foam comfort layer, and zoned support.
Merit Home Furniture lists 62 mattresses for Vancouver Island homes. The 14 that can be ordered through our Duncan store are all Restwell or Restonic beds: 8 Restwell and 6 Restonic. By each maker's own feel word, 3 of those 14 are medium, the label closest to that 4 to 5, and 6 are plush. Every one of those 9 has a pillow top or euro top. Most beds named below come from that Duncan list. A few Tempur-Pedic, Sealy and Beautyrest beds carried at our Campbell River store are named too. The feel word narrows the list, and a lie-down on your side settles it.
Do side sleepers need a firm or plush mattress? Firmness by body weight
Sleep Foundation's firmness guide puts side sleepers on a softer mattress than back or stomach sleepers of the same weight, from 130 pounds up. Below 130 pounds, its side and back ranges are the same. Here is its side-sleeper row on the 10-point scale. Beside each band is the number of beds listed for Merit's Duncan store whose maker's feel word falls in it, taken at face value.
| Weight | Range, Duncan beds |
|---|---|
| Under 130 lb | Soft (3) to medium (5). Listed for Duncan: 6 plush, and the 3 medium |
| 130 to 230 lb | Medium soft (4) to medium (5). Listed for Duncan: the 3 medium |
| Over 230 lb | Medium firm (6) to firm (7). Listed for Duncan: 4 firm |
Sleep Foundation also says most mattresses rate around 5 or 6. For a side sleeper of 130 to 230 pounds, that puts a typical bed at or above the top of the range, which is why the feel label matters.
Those ranges are starting points, and Sleep Foundation's own pages differ by a notch. Its page on side sleeping puts the best mattresses for side sleepers at 5 or 6, medium or medium firm. Both pages include 5, medium, so that's where the two agree.
The makers lean the same way. Beautyrest's help centre says side sleepers usually look at a Medium or Plush mattress, because the hip and shoulder often need a bit more pressure relief. Tempur-Pedic Canada says side and stomach sleepers tend to choose a medium to soft mattress.
Of the other 5 Duncan beds, 4 carry a firm label. The Copper Hybrid is listed in firm, medium and plush under one name, with no euro top or pillow top, so it sits outside the counts above. Any of its three feels can be ordered through Duncan, and it's worth asking which one, if any, is on the floor as a display model. The 9 plush and medium ones split between the two makers as below. Both makers price every size separately, and the figures are queen prices before applicable taxes.
| Maker | Plush and medium, queen |
|---|---|
| Restwell | 3 plush and 1 medium, $1,049.00 to $2,199.00 |
| Restonic | 3 plush and 2 medium, $1,049.00 to $2,599.00; every one zoned, in the table further down |
Height changes the feel as well. Sleep Foundation notes that a tall person's weight is spread over more of the bed. The same mattress can feel firmer to them than to a shorter sleeper of the same weight. The full scale and each maker's feel words are set out where we compare firm, medium and plush mattresses, along with choices for a couple who sleep differently.
Why side sleeping loads the shoulder and hip
Side sleeping loads the shoulder and hip because they're where a side sleeper's body presses into the mattress. In Sleep Foundation's words, they "bear the brunt" of the weight. Its side-sleeping page describes two ways a mattress gets this wrong. A bed that's too soft can let the hips sink too far and pull the spine out of alignment. One that's too firm cushions too little, which can leave the hips and shoulders sore and a gap under the waist.
Side sleeping is also the position adults spend the most time in, going by a 2017 study in Nature and Science of Sleep. It put motion sensors on 664 Danish working adults, who spent 54.1% of their time in bed on their side, 37.5% on their back and 7.3% on their front.
Research on the spine in side lying is small. In a 2011 study in Biomedical Engineering Online, 25 men lay on their side on a soft surface, a firm one and a custom surface with zones of different stiffness. The line of the spine on the soft surface differed significantly from the other two. The authors judged the zoned surface the better choice for heavier men with a pronounced body contour.
A 2011 study in Ergonomics followed 17 sleepers through three nights each in a sleep lab. A sagging bed hurt sleep quality for those who sleep on their side or front. For pain, the evidence is thinner still. A 2019 scoping review in BMJ Open screened 4,186 articles on sleep posture and spinal symptoms and found four studies that fit. In those, side lying was generally protective against spinal symptoms, but the reviewers said there weren't enough high-quality studies to answer the question.
Pillow top and euro top mattresses for side sleepers
A pillow top or euro top is a thick comfort layer sewn onto the top of the mattress, and it's the part a side sleeper's shoulder sinks into. Beautyrest's help centre says side sleepers often look at a pillow top model "to add an extra bit of softness". All 3 medium beds listed for Duncan have a euro top, and all 7 plush ones a euro top or pillow top.
The first table lists the medium beds, for a side sleeper of 130 to 230 pounds, and the second the plush ones, for a lighter sleeper. Queen prices are Merit's, before applicable taxes, and each listing prices the other sizes as well.
| Medium | Top, build, queen |
|---|---|
| Restwell Starling | Medium euro top, 5-zone pocket coil, micro coils and zoned latex, 13 in, $1,449.00 |
| Restonic Notte | Medium overall, euro top, copper memory foam over zoned pocket coils, 15 in, $1,688.00 |
| Restonic Vernazza | Medium overall, euro top, Talalay latex and wool over zoned pocket coils, 16 in, $2,599.00 |
Two more medium pillow tops, Beautyrest's Egan 14 and World Class Ephy 16, are carried at our Campbell River store. A side sleeper up the Island can phone that store for our best price on either.
| Plush | Top, build, queen |
|---|---|
| Restonic Prestige | Plush overall, euro top, a full sheet of gel memory foam, 13 in, $1,049.00 |
| Restwell Robin | Plush euro top, zoned gel memory foam, 12 1/4 in, $1,049.00 |
| Restonic Mondena | Plush overall, euro top, a Marvelous Middle layer, 15 in, $1,688.00 |
| Restwell Savannah Plush | Plush pillow top, gel memory foam, 15 in, $1,549.00 |
| Restwell Sparrow Elite | Plush pillow top, micro coils and zoned latex, 15 1/2 in, $2,199.00 |
| Restonic Treviso | Plush overall, euro top, Talalay copper latex and wool, 16 in, $2,599.00 |
A taller bed isn't automatically a softer one. The 12 1/4-inch Robin and the 15 1/2-inch Sparrow Elite both carry Restwell's Plush label. Two soft pillow tops from other makers, the Sealy Plus Jacob and Beautyrest World Class Lucor, are carried at our Campbell River store. Our best price on the Jacob or the Lucor comes from a call there.
Memory foam comfort layers for side sleepers
Memory foam is the slow, body-shaping foam makers put where a side sleeper's shoulder lands. Tempur-Pedic calls its version body-conforming, and says its softer models let you sink in further before the support layer cradles you. On Merit's listings memory foam comes two ways: as the whole mattress, or as one layer over coils.
None of the 14 Duncan descriptions on Merit's site calls a bed all foam. The all-foam beds on our listings that suit a side sleeper's range are Tempur-Pedic's ProAlign 12 Soft and ProAlign 12 Medium. Both are carried at our Campbell River store, where a call gets our best price on a ProAlign.
As one layer over coils, memory foam turns up in four of the Duncan beds above. The Restonic Prestige has a full sheet of gel memory foam and the Notte a full sheet of copper memory foam. The Restwell Robin has a zoned gel memory foam layer, and the Savannah Plush a gel memory foam one. In the Restonic Vernazza and Treviso, the comfort layers start with Talalay latex instead.
Memory foam has two drawbacks. Sleep Foundation says soft, close-conforming beds give a hugging feel that some people find claustrophobic, and it names memory foam among the materials prone to trapping heat. The comparison of foam with hybrids and coils, on heat, edges and price, is in how foam, hybrid and coil beds are built. That guide also has a general showroom checklist.
Zoned mattresses for side sleepers, in the makers' words
A zoned mattress changes its stiffness from head to foot instead of feeling the same all over. Tempur-Pedic says the 5-zone layer in its LuxeAlign puts a larger zone beneath the core to keep the spine aligned, and smaller zones that cradle the hips and shoulders. Thirteen of the 14 beds listed for Merit's Duncan store name zoning: all 6 Restonic beds and 7 of the 8 Restwell ones. Tempur-Pedic's LuxeAlign 13 Soft and LuxeAlign 13 Firm are both carried at our Campbell River store, so a LuxeAlign is priced by calling there.
| Listed for Duncan | Feel and zones, in the listing's words |
|---|---|
| Restwell Robin | Plush; 5-zone pocket coil, 1,200 count, firmer coils under the lower back |
| Restwell Savannah Plush | Plush; 5-zone pocket coil, firmer in the lumbar area, and 7-zone Conforma Touch foam |
| Restwell Sparrow Elite | Plush; 5-zone pocket coil, 7-zone Conforma Touch foam and zoned latex |
| Restwell Starling | Medium; 5-zone pocket coil, 7-zone Conforma Touch foam and zoned latex |
| Restonic Prestige | Plush; 884 zoned pocket coils |
| Restonic Notte | Medium; 1,188 zoned pocket coils |
| Restonic Mondena | Plush; 1,188 zoned pocket coils |
| Restonic Vernazza | Medium; 1,250 zoned pocket coils |
| Restonic Treviso | Plush; 1,250 zoned pocket coils |
| Restonic Minto | Firm; 884 zoned pocket coils |
The table leaves out three zoned firm Restwell beds, the Canary, the Nightingale and the Nightingale Elite, and the Copper Hybrid's listing names no zones. For a side sleeper of 130 to 230 pounds, the zoned beds in range are the three mediums: the Starling, the Notte and the Vernazza.
Three Restwell descriptions say where the firmer zone sits: under the lower back, or in the lumbar area. A firmer middle is aimed at the waist and lower back, the part of a side sleeper that shouldn't sag while the shoulder sinks. Restonic's US site says its Marvelous Middle gives 25% more support in the centre third of the mattress. Two of our Restonic listings name a Marvelous Middle layer, and neither says how much firmer it is.
Can a mattress topper make a firm bed work for a side sleeper?
A mattress topper can soften a firm bed for a side sleeper, within limits. Sleep Foundation describes a topper as a single layer of cushioning up to 4 inches thick. For side sleepers, it says, the right one can mean closer conforming, better spinal alignment and less pressure.
We don't list toppers or mattress pads at Merit. For a side sleeper on a bed that's too firm, the change we can help with is a softer mattress.
Pillow height for side sleepers
A side sleeper's pillow has to fill the space between the head and the mattress, and that space depends on shoulder width and how far the shoulder sinks. Sleep Foundation's testing puts most side sleepers on a medium to high loft pillow, at least 4 inches thick. It suggests over 6 inches for broad shoulders, and says even 4 inches can be too high for someone who sinks deeply into the bed.
The mattress and the pillow work as a pair. Sleep Foundation's firmness guide says high-loft pillows tend to suit firmer beds and lower-loft pillows softer ones, because you sink further into a soft mattress. So a new plush pillow top can leave an old, high pillow sitting too high.
A 2025 study in Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing had nine healthy adults lie on their side. The pillows were 8, 10, 12 and 14 cm high, about 3 to 5.5 inches. The best height tracked each person's shoulder width. A medium height for the shoulder, with neck support, came closest to the neck's natural standing curve. HealthLink BC's advice for neck pain points the same way: use a pillow that keeps the neck straight, and check it if the neck is worse in the morning.
For the pillow's own feel, Sleep Foundation suggests medium to medium firm for a side sleeper. A very soft pillow can let the head sink until the pillow covers the mouth, and an extra-firm one can strain the neck and shoulders.
Two of the pillows listed for our Duncan store can be brought down to a side sleeper's height, because fill comes out of both. Prices are before applicable taxes. Their care lines differ, so how each pillow washes is worth checking before you buy.
| Pillow | Loft, fill, price |
|---|---|
| Health Guard Cool Ice | Adjustable gel chip memory foam; Health Guard names side sleepers along with back and stomach; $109.00 |
| Health Guard Hotel Comfort | Down alternative fill that can be taken out to lower it, in a Tencel shell, queen 20 by 29 in.; $49.00 |
The rest of the pillows we list are in one collection, and the fold test and other ways of choosing and replacing a pillow are covered separately.
Shoulder or hip pain from side sleeping: what's known, and when to call 9-1-1
Shoulder or hip pain goes to a doctor first; a mattress comes after. The research linking sleep position to shoulder pain is small and points both ways. In a 2012 study of 83 Danish patients with pain in one shoulder, 67% of those who slept on one side lay on the sore shoulder. The patients came from 10 chiropractic clinics. The authors say they can't tell whether that's cause or effect.
A 2018 study of 761 workers pointed the other way. The sleep position expected to be hardest on the shoulder was, if anything, linked with less shoulder pain. Its authors suggest people prone to shoulder pain may have learned to avoid that position.
The Danish study also found that 76% slept on the side facing away from their partner, so the side of the bed may decide which shoulder takes the weight. The authors suggested studying whether swapping sides of the bed helps; their study didn't test it.
For a sore hip, HealthLink BC's advice is to sleep on the side that doesn't have the problem, with a pillow between the knees. Its page on trochanteric bursitis lists tenderness when you lie on the affected side as a symptom. For a sore shoulder or hip, Sleep Foundation adds that if a softer mattress hasn't helped, the other side or the back may be more comfortable.
For a sore back, a 2003 Lancet trial in 313 adults with chronic low-back pain favoured medium-firm over firm, and your doctor comes first. What a mattress can and can't do for a sore back has the other studies.
HealthLink BC, the province's health information service, sets out when pain needs more than a new bed. Its advice below takes priority over anything in this guide.
| What to do | When, per HealthLink BC |
|---|---|
| Call 9-1-1 | Heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain or pressure, sweating, shortness of breath or nausea. Its list includes pain, pressure or a strange feeling in one or both shoulders or arms. It says not to drive yourself. |
| Call a doctor now | Neck pain that wakes you from sleep, or new or worse numbness or weakness in the arms or legs (its neck pain page). |
| Run its checker | Numbness, tingling or weakness in the arm, hand or wrist lasting more than an hour is one of the questions in its shoulder symptom checker. |
| Run its checker | Hip pain at rest that doesn't go away or that wakes you, which HealthLink BC doesn't count among the usually minor kinds. |
For help deciding, 8-1-1 connects you with a HealthLink BC navigator anywhere in BC, and 7-1-1 does the same for the deaf and hard of hearing.
What mattress does a chiropractor recommend for side sleepers?
A chiropractor who has examined you can recommend for your body, which no guide can. The Canadian Chiropractic Association's published side-sleeping advice, on its page for pregnant patients, is about pillows rather than mattresses.
Side sleeping in pregnancy: what HealthLink BC and CMAJ say
Side sleeping is HealthLink BC's advice in pregnancy: sleep on your side, with pillows to support your belly and between your knees. Later in pregnancy it says the left side is best. Lying on the right side or the back, it explains, lets the growing uterus partly block the large blood vessel in front of the backbone.
A 2025 article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal is firmer on timing and looser on sides. Its authors are doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital. Before 28 weeks, they write, current evidence indicates sleeping posture doesn't affect how a pregnancy turns out. From 28 weeks, the article says, pregnant patients should be advised not to go to sleep on their back. Going to sleep on the right side appears to be as safe as the left, the article says. It also reports a trial in which ordinary pillows cut back-sleeping as well as pregnancy pillows did.
The Canadian Chiropractic Association's page for pregnant patients adds a pillow to hug, so you don't roll forward, and a supportive pillow under the neck. None of these sources names a mattress. Left or right, and anything else about sleep in pregnancy, is for your doctor or midwife to settle.
Told to sleep on your side for snoring, sleep apnea or heartburn
Sleeping on your side is one of HealthLink BC's home steps for snoring, and its sleep apnea page lists it too.
HealthLink BC also suggests raising the head of the bed 10 to 15 cm, 4 to 6 inches, with bricks under the legs. Pillows under the head and upper body won't do the same job, it says. Call your doctor, it says, if you or your partner snore loudly and heavily, feel sleepy in the day, or stop breathing, gasp or choke during sleep.
HealthLink BC's page on GERD, or reflux, says to raise the head of the bed 15 to 20 cm, 6 to 8 inches. It suggests blocks under the frame or a foam wedge under the head of the mattress, and says extra pillows don't work. Merit also lists adjustable bases that lift the head end. Night-time heartburn, and whether a base would do instead of blocks, are questions for your doctor. Sleep Foundation adds that there's some evidence sleeping on the left side may help curb acid reflux.
A back sleeper who turns to their side on that advice may find the old mattress presses at the shoulder. Sleep Foundation says side sleepers under 230 pounds on a firm bed may get pressure build-up at the hips and shoulders.
When a soft mattress is the wrong choice for a side sleeper
A soft mattress is the wrong choice for a side sleeper over 230 pounds. Sleep Foundation's firmness guide warns that a surface that's too soft can lead to poor posture from excessive sagging.
Sleep Foundation gives combination sleepers of 130 to 230 pounds their own range, medium soft (4) to medium firm (6). The back-sleeping part of a combination sleeper's night is covered in a separate guide for back sleepers.
Soft layers also wear sooner, by Sleep Foundation's account. It says beds from medium soft to medium firm use sturdier materials and tend to last longer than softer ones.
Merit's own listings have gaps too. Among the 8 Restwell listings, the Copper Hybrid puts firm, medium and plush on one page at one price, so the feel gets named when you ask us to order it. The Restonic feel words come from our own listing text, and no Restonic listing says how its zones are laid out. It's worth asking us before counting on any of them.
A side sleeper's checklist for trying mattresses
A side sleeper's checks in a showroom come down to the shoulder, the waist and the hips. They work in any store, Merit's included, alongside the general routine in the foam and hybrid guide linked above.
- Start on your usual side. Lie the way you wake up, then roll to the other side, since a sore shoulder or hip may favour one.
- Feel for a gap at the waist. Slide a flat hand under your waist. An easy slide is the gap a too-firm bed leaves, as described above. HealthLink BC's tip for side sleepers with back pain, a small rolled-up towel under the waist, fills the same space.
- Try a pillow between the knees. Sleep Foundation says it can ease pressure on the hips and stop the top knee dropping onto the bottom one.
- Get up the way you would at home. HealthLink BC's method for a sore back is to roll onto your side, bend both knees, drop your feet over the edge and push up with both arms. Try it from the side of the bed you'd sleep on.
For a side sleeper, I'd rather you spent a good while on your side on one mattress, with your own pillow, than read another label. If the underneath arm starts to tingle or the hip presses, that bed or that pillow is too firm or too low for you. Then try the next one.

Trying side-sleeper mattresses in Campbell River or Duncan
For Courtenay and Comox, the nearest Merit showroom is in Campbell River, at 1300 A Homewood Road. It's open 10 to 5, Monday to Saturday, and its number is (250) 286-0868. Some online directories show other hours for it, so a call before the drive saves a wasted trip. The Duncan store on Ingram Street, where I work, keeps 9 to 5, Monday to Saturday. Nanaimo and Port Alberni make up the four.
The Restwell and Restonic beds above are listed for Duncan, and the Tempur-Pedic, Sealy and Beautyrest ones are carried at Campbell River. Ask which of them a store has set up, and bring your pillow. Nobody will follow you around while you lie on them, and going home to think it over is fine.
Delivery from Merit's Duncan store costs $150 across the Island, assembly included, and some Gulf Islands are reachable once you call for details. A mattress going across the Island may need a different shipping method, and a delivered price to Courtenay or Comox comes from the Campbell River store. Nanaimo and Port Alberni also set their own delivery terms. If the bed feels wrong once it's home, say so. Merit Duncan's invoices say all sales are final, but exchanges are encouraged up to 30 days, case by case.
