Firm vs plush mattress: what firm, medium, plush and pillow top mean, and who each suits

Restonic mattress with a Euro top and two pillows - Merit Home Furniture

A firm mattress pushes back, so you lie on top of it. A plush mattress lets your shoulders and hips sink into its top layers, and a medium sits between the two. Those are feel words with no universally accepted measurement behind them, so each maker may label its beds its own way.

Neither feel is better on its own. The right one depends on how you sleep, what you weigh and whether your back hurts.

Across the 62 mattresses Merit Home Furniture lists for Vancouver Island homes, the stated feel splits three ways. Going by the feel each listing states, 21 are soft or plush, 18 carry a medium label and 18 are firm or firmer. The 14 that can be ordered through our Duncan store come from two makers, Restwell and Restonic. The label gets you to a short list of mattresses. Lying on the bed the way you sleep settles it, and a showroom checklist comes further down.

Is a firm or plush mattress better?

A firm or plush mattress is better only for a particular sleeper. From 130 pounds up, Sleep Foundation's firmness guide puts side sleepers on softer beds than back or stomach sleepers of their weight. That lets the shoulder and hip sink. It moves every range firmer for people over 230 pounds.

For a sore back, a 2003 trial in The Lancet favoured medium-firm over firm. It's worth asking your doctor before settling on the firmest bed in the room.

What firm, medium and plush mean on the firmness scale

Mattress firmness is how far a bed lets you sink before it pushes back. Sleep Foundation calls a 10-point scale common, and its bands are below.

Scale Label and how it behaves
1 Extra soft: sinks a lot and follows the body closely
2 to 3 Soft: sinks and conforms considerably
4 Medium soft: sinks some and conforms fairly closely
5 Medium: sinks less, still conforms noticeably
6 Medium firm: little sink, moderate conforming
7 to 8 Firm: virtually no sink, minimal conforming
9 to 10 Extra firm: no sink you'd notice

Plush has no number of its own. Sleep Foundation says beds rated 1 to 3 "may also be classified as plush". Makers use plush and soft for the same end of the range, sometimes on one listing. Our Beautyrest Centennial Hermes, carried at the Campbell River store, is titled Extra Soft, and its spec table says Ultra Plush Super Pillow Top.

A medium mattress is the 5 on that scale, and medium firm one step harder. The back pain trial measured its "medium-firm" on a different scale, explained below.

Is a pillow top the same as a plush mattress?

A pillow top describes how the top of a mattress is built, and it comes in more than one feel. Sleep Foundation defines it as "a single, gusseted layer made of either fiber or foam" sewn onto the mattress. A Euro top is sewn flush with the edges and usually uses denser, somewhat firmer materials.

Merit's listings bear that out. Of the 20 whose titles name a pillow top or euro top, 8 are labelled soft or plush and 7 medium, medium plush or medium firm. The other 5 are firm. Two of those, the Sealy Jayden 14 Firm Euro Top and a Beautyrest Iven firm pillow top, are carried at our Campbell River store and priced over the phone.

None of those 20 is a Duncan listing, because Restwell and Restonic leave the top out of their titles. The six Duncan Restonic descriptions call every bed a foam-encased Euro top, from the plush Restonic Prestige to the firm Restonic Minto.

Do hotels use plush or firm mattresses?

Most hotels use medium-firm mattresses, according to Sleep Foundation's guide to hotel beds, because that feel suits most guests. W Hotels, it notes, calls the firmer of its two beds the Plush Top.

Why mattress firmness labels differ from maker to maker

Mattress firmness labels differ from maker to maker. Sleep Foundation gives the reason: "Since there is no universally accepted measurement for mattress firmness, each manufacturer may use its own system".

A European scale does exist, and it runs backwards. The 2003 Lancet trial used a scale from the European Committee for Standardisation, which starts at 1.0 for the firmest and stops at 10.0 for the softest. The trial's firm mattress scored 2.3 and its medium-firm 5.6.

Beautyrest's own help page says "firmness is going to be subjective from person to person". Merit's 62 listings come from 12 makers. Restwell and Restonic make the 14 listed for Duncan. The other ten makers' beds are carried at our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores, which give their best price by phone. Where a spec table and a title disagree, the spec table wins, so the Centennial Hermes counts by its Ultra Plush wording. Medium in the counts covers medium, medium plush and medium firm.

Maker Words and counts
Restwell (8) Plush, Plush pillow top, Medium, Firm, from the comfort row of its spec sheets. Counts: 3 plush, 1 medium, 3 firm, 1 with no feel named. All 8 are listed for Duncan
Restonic (7) plush, medium or firm in our listing text for the six Duncan beds, and Medium on the Brookwell twin at Port Alberni. Counts: 3 plush, 3 medium, 1 firm
Beautyrest (9) Soft, Ultra Plush Super Pillow Top, Medium, Firm. Counts: 3 soft or plush, 3 medium, 3 firm, all at Campbell River
Tempur-Pedic (5) Soft, Medium, Firm. Counts: 2 soft, 2 medium, 1 firm, all at Campbell River
Sealy (3) Soft, Medium, Firm. Counts: one of each, all at Campbell River
Seven other makers (30) Plush, Ultra Plush, Medium, Medium Plush, Medium Firm, Cushion Firm, Firm, Extra Firm. Counts: 9 soft or plush, 8 medium, 9 firm or firmer, 4 with no feel named, at Campbell River or Port Alberni

Firmness vs support: one build in a plush and a medium

Firmness and support are two separate traits. Sleep Foundation ties firmness mainly to the comfort layers on top. Support comes mainly from the core underneath, the coils or dense foam that stop you sinking too far. Sealy Canada's FAQ says a Posturepedic set gives "the correct support you need, regardless of comfort level or price".

Two Restonic beds listed for Merit's Duncan store show the split. By our listing text, the Restonic Treviso sleeps plush and the Restonic Vernazza medium. Both stand 16 inches, under a Tencel cooling quilt with Joma wool. Both rest on the same 1250 foam-encased zoned pocket coils.

What changes is the comfort section, the part Sleep Foundation ties to firmness. The Treviso uses an inch of copper Talalay latex, the Vernazza plain Talalay latex, and each has its own 2-inch Duralast foam.

Restonic Treviso mattress, the plush one of a pair built on the same coils as the medium Vernazza - Merit Home Furniture

Several lines on Merit's listings come in two feels. The Duncan prices below are for a queen, before applicable taxes.

Mattress Feels, and queen price
Restonic Treviso and Vernazza Plush or medium, $2,599.00 for either
Restonic Mondena and Notte Plush or medium, $1,688.00 for either
Restonic Prestige and Minto Plush $1,049.00; firm $1,199.00
Tempur-Pedic ProAlign 12 Soft or medium, at Campbell River, best price by phone
Tempur-Pedic LuxeAlign 13 Soft or firm, at Campbell River, best price by phone
Sealy Plus Jacob 15.5 Soft or medium euro pillow top, at Campbell River, best price by phone

Does a plush mattress cost more than a firm one?

Not on Merit's Duncan listings. The plush Restonic Prestige is $1,049.00 in a queen and the firm Minto $1,199.00, so here the firm one costs $150.00 more. The two share an organic cotton quilt and an 884-coil foam-encased support unit. Treviso and Vernazza cost the same in every size, and so do Mondena and Notte. The Campbell River pairs have no online price to compare.

Who a plush, medium or firm mattress suits by sleep position and weight

Sleep position and body weight set the starting range in Sleep Foundation's firmness guide, shown here on the 10-point scale above. They're one publisher's starting ranges, and a lie-down in the store can overrule them.

Position Range by weight
Side 3 to 5 under 130 lb; 4 to 5 at 130 to 230 lb; 6 to 7 over 230 lb
Back 3 to 5 under 130 lb; 5 to 7 at 130 to 230 lb; 7 to 9 over 230 lb
Stomach 4 to 6 under 130 lb; 5 to 7 at 130 to 230 lb; 7 to 9 over 230 lb
Combination 3 to 5 under 130 lb; 4 to 6 at 130 to 230 lb; 7 to 8 over 230 lb

Sleep Foundation adds that back sleepers generally need a slightly firmer mattress that resists sagging in the middle. Stomach sleeping, Sleep Foundation says, "is inadvisable for most individuals due to the potential for strain".

The makers split on stomach sleepers. Beautyrest suggests them a Firm or Extra Firm and no pillow top. That is firmer than Sleep Foundation's table below 230 pounds, where the stomach range runs 4 to 7. Tempur-Pedic Canada groups them with side sleepers, as tending to choose "a medium to soft mattress". Side sleepers get more detail in the guide for people who sleep on their side.

Is a plush or firm mattress better for back pain?

For chronic low-back pain, the 2003 Lancet trial favours medium-firm over firm, and it didn't test a plush mattress at all. Kovacs and colleagues ran the randomised, double-blind trial in 313 adults with chronic non-specific low-back pain. After 90 days, the medium-firm group had better results for pain while lying in bed and for disability.

That is one trial, in people whose backs already hurt, comparing two firmnesses. Back pain, like any health problem, is a question for your doctor before it's a question for a mattress store.

HealthLink BC warns from the soft side: "If you have a very soft mattress, you may be more comfortable if you sleep on the floor". Its page on sleeping with back pain aims for a neutral back, "not arched a lot, but not flat either".

The other studies, where a pillow helps, and how we'd go about fitting a mattress to a sore back are all in the back pain guide.

Sharing a mattress when one of you sleeps on your side and the other on your back

A side sleeper and a back sleeper can often share one medium mattress, going by Sleep Foundation's numbers. Between 130 and 230 pounds, their two ranges in the table above meet at 5, medium. Sleep Foundation notes that many couples compromise on a firmness between their two preferences. Once one of you is over 230 pounds, the ranges can stop overlapping.

One medium mattress

One bed, one set of sheets and no gap down the middle. The side sleeper gives up some sink and the back sleeper some push-back. It works best when your two ranges share a number.

A split king in two feels

Two twin XL mattresses on one standard king frame or foundation, one feel each, which Sleep Foundation suggests for partners who want different firmness levels. Through Merit's Duncan store, a plush Restonic Mondena and a medium Notte are $1,488.00 each in twin XL. The pair comes to $2,976.00 before applicable taxes, against $2,088.00 for one king of either.

The Prestige and Minto come in twin XL too, plush at $999.00 and firm at $1,099.00, and the size chart for split kings and twin XLs has the measurements.

From the showroom floor

When a couple can't agree, I'd have them lie side by side on one model in two feels. Call ahead to find out whether a store has both set up. On a pair like the Treviso and Vernazza, two names on one set of coils, the lie-down tells you what the spec table can't.

How to test mattress firmness in a showroom

A firmness test needs more than a quick lie-down. The Better Sleep Council says it "can take up to 15 minutes to relax enough to feel the true support of a mattress". Sealy Canada suggests 15 minutes on each. The general routine, such as lying in your own position and trying beds as a couple, is in the showroom steps in our foam and hybrid guide. These are the checks that matter most for feel.

  1. Dress to lie down. Wear something you can roll over in, and bring your own pillow if you can. Both are on Sealy Canada's list.
  2. Skip the edge. Sealy Canada's FAQ says support and comfort can't be judged by sitting on an edge or lying down for a few seconds.
  3. Roll over and get up. Turn over twice and climb out as you would at night.
  4. Read the quilting on a Sealy. Sealy Canada says small, close quilting tends to feel firmer and large, spread-out quilting more plush.
  5. Write down the maker's word. Note the feel label with the brand and model, since the same word means different things from one maker to the next.

Where plush and firm mattresses each fall short

Plush mattresses tend to wear sooner. Sleep Foundation says softer beds use plush materials that "often deteriorate faster", and thick, soft comfort layers may sag or develop lasting indentations earlier. Soft beds also frequently trap heat, it adds, and a pillow top's light, fluffy layer will eventually flatten out. The signs a mattress has worn out tell you when that has gone too far.

Firm mattresses are hard on side sleepers. Sleep Foundation says a bed that's too firm can push the spine out of alignment and build pressure at the hips and shoulders.

Merit's own listings have gaps too. One of the 8 Restwell listings, the Copper Hybrid, names no single feel because it is listed in firm, medium and plush. It's worth asking which one a store has on display before trying it. Layer names can mislead as well: the plush Treviso has a medium foam layer, and the medium Vernazza a plush one. Merit's Restonic listings say those names describe each layer on its own, so the whole bed's word is the one to go by.

Lying on firm, medium and plush mattresses on the Island

The Restwell and Restonic beds above are listed for Merit's Duncan store. The other makers' mattresses are carried at Campbell River and Port Alberni. A quick call tells you which feels a store has set up. Take whatever time each bed needs, since nobody is going to follow you around.

The Duncan store's delivery is $150 across the Island with assembly included. Some Gulf Islands can be reached as well, so call the Duncan store about yours. A mattress travelling across the Island may need a different shipping method. Campbell River and Port Alberni set their own delivery terms, so ask that store when you buy there.

If a feel turns out wrong at home, talk to us. Duncan's invoices say all sales are final, yet we encourage exchanges up to 30 days and look at each case on its own.
