Are massage chairs good for you? Who should ask a doctor first, when it's 9-1-1 instead, and Cozzia's time limits

A massage chair is a recliner with motors in it. Rollers run up and down behind your back, air cells squeeze the arms, legs and feet, and most models add heat. Cozzia makes all seven massage chairs Merit Home Furniture lists on Vancouver Island, and their prices run from $4,199 to $16,549, before applicable taxes. The HealthLink BC pages we read give massage chairs no verdict. HealthLink says massage may ease low back pain for a short time, and in a 2020 trial a chair and physiotherapy both helped, physiotherapy more. Every Cozzia manual carries a list of conditions, and says to consult your doctor before use if one applies.

I sell furniture for a living, not health care, so every caution on this page is quoted from someone else. The sources are Cozzia's seven manuals and its Canadian FAQ, HealthLink BC (the province's health information service) and two medical journals.

Are massage chairs good for you? What the health sources say

Massage chairs don't come up on any HealthLink BC page we read; those pages describe massage given by hand. On massage in general, HealthLink is modest. Its massage page names relaxing and relieving pain as the reasons people use massage, and says it "may improve blood flow". Its low back pain page says massage "may reduce low back pain for a short time". It "is likely to work best", the page adds, alongside back exercises and safer ways to lift and move. You may have read that a one-hour massage is equivalent to 8 hours of sleep; none of the health sources behind this guide says anything of the kind.

Research on the chairs themselves is thin. The authors of a 2020 trial in the journal Medicine wrote that the effectiveness of home massage chairs had "not been evaluated" before their study. Their trial put a chair against physiotherapy for lower back pain, and pain and disability improved more with the physiotherapy. Who ran that trial, and what a chair costs per session, are covered in our guide to whether a chair is worth it.

Who should not use a massage chair without asking a doctor first?

Cozzia's manual tells anyone with a condition on its list to consult a doctor before using the chair. We read the safety pages of the manuals for all seven chairs Merit lists, and the medical wording is identical in each. The list has 11 lines under the lead-in "Consult your doctor before use if you:", printed here exactly as Cozzia wrote them.

Cozzia Fusion Pro massage chair in sand and black, three-quarter front view - Merit Home Furniture
On the list Cozzia's words
Doctor's orders "Are under medical rest as ordered by a doctor."
Spine "Have spinal disorders, an abnormal spinal condition or have suffered a spinal injury."
Back "Have back problems."
Blood sugar, bones, feeling "Have diabetes, osteoporosis or sensory impairment."
Joints "Have joint dysfunction such as rheumatism, hammertoe or gout."
Implants "Have a pacemaker or other electronic medical devices."
Pregnancy "May be pregnant."
Veins "Have phlebitis or thrombosis." (Inflamed veins or blood clots.)
Clots "Have an increased risk for blood clots."
Surgery "Had recent surgery."
Metal in the legs "Have surgical pins, screws, or anything mechanical in the legs, ankles or feet."

Two lines just above that list widen it. "People on medication or with medical conditions, please consult your doctor before use," the manual says, and then: "Please do not use the product if you are not feeling well."

Neck or back pain: when it's 9-1-1 or a doctor, not a massage chair

Neck or back pain sometimes needs 9-1-1 or a doctor, and HealthLink BC's page on each one spells out when. The two pages give the same 9-1-1 cases and much the same list for calling a doctor now. If a row fits, its instruction comes first.

HealthLink BC says If
Call 9-1-1 immediately Neck or back pain comes with chest pain or other symptoms of a heart attack. The neck pain page names shortness of breath and nausea.
Call 9-1-1 immediately Signs of damage to the spine after an injury "such as a car crash, fall, or direct blow to the spine". HealthLink lists being unable to move part of the body, severe back or neck pain, and weakness, tingling or numbness in the arms or legs.
Call a doctor now New or worse numbness in your arms, buttocks or legs, or new or worse weakness in the arms or legs. The same goes for lost control of the bladder or bowels, or pain that wakes you from sleep. The neck page adds "or seek immediate medical care".
Call a doctor now Long-term pain that suddenly gets much worse "and you didn't cause it by being more active". The same goes for new or increased pain with a history of cancer or HIV infection.
Call a doctor now, back pain New or increased back pain with fever, painful urination or other signs of a urinary tract infection.
Call your doctor Pain no better after 1 or 2 days that keeps you from your normal daily activities.
Talk with your doctor Mild to moderate pain still there after at least 2 weeks of home treatment.

HealthLink BC also says most neck pain and most low back pain don't need a visit to a doctor. If it might be an emergency, its advice is to call 9-1-1 right away. For anything short of that, 8-1-1 is its toll-free line in the province, with 7-1-1 for the deaf and hard of hearing. A navigator there can point you to health information or put you through to a health professional.

Massage chairs with pregnancy, blood thinners, osteoporosis and other conditions

Massage chairs get the same answer from Cozzia's manual for every condition on its list: consult your doctor before use.

Can you use a massage chair while pregnant?

Using a massage chair while pregnant is a question for your doctor first. "May be pregnant" is on Cozzia's list, and the manual says not to apply the rollers directly on the "torso or abdomen". HealthLink BC's page on massage during pregnancy is written for massage by a therapist. It warns that firm massage of the belly "could cause serious pregnancy problems", and says to avoid lying on your back after your fourth month. All seven Cozzia massage chairs at Merit recline, and the Radiance has a zero gravity button that lays you back with one press. How far to recline, if at all, is worth asking your doctor.

The same HealthLink page asks pregnant readers to talk to their doctor before using aromatherapy oils. Among the Quantum's extras is an aromatherapy diffuser.

Blood thinners, blood clots and recent surgery

Clotting problems appear on both lists, and blood thinners on HealthLink BC's. HealthLink BC's massage page, about massage by hand, is firmer. Done the right way, it says, massage "is considered safe", but it "isn't a good idea" if you:

  • have a blood clot in a vein
  • have a bleeding disorder or low blood platelet counts
  • take a medicine (called a blood thinner) that prevents blood clots
  • have had a recent surgery
  • have a fever, a contagious disease, bruises or skin abrasions

Neither source says whether a chair's lightest setting changes any of that. For someone on a blood thinner, the doctor who prescribed it is the one to ask, and that includes a chair bought as a gift.

Osteoporosis and one published case

Osteoporosis is on Cozzia's list. Cozzia gives no reason. A 2019 case report describes one fracture. Doctors in the orthopaedic surgery department at Ajou University, in Korea, wrote it up in the journal Osteoporosis International. An elderly woman felt a sudden, severe pain in her upper back while using an automated massage chair. Scans found a fresh compression fracture in one vertebra of her thoracic spine, the section behind the chest.

A bone density scan then confirmed osteoporosis, though she'd had no risk factor for a fragility fracture. She was treated with a plastic brace and osteoporosis medicine, and six months later the bone had healed and her symptoms were gone. The authors wrote that research on these chairs' safety "is lacking". People "with or at risk for osteoporosis should be cautious" with deep tissue massage from one, they concluded. One case can't show how often this happens.

Pacemakers, heat burns and children

A pacemaker, or any other electronic medical device, is on Cozzia's list with no reason given, only the instruction to consult your doctor first. Separately, the manual warns that temperatures "sufficiently high to cause burns may occur regardless of the control setting". It asks owners to check the skin under the heated areas often, to reduce the risk of blistering.

Children come under the general warnings instead. Cozzia says the chair "is not intended for use by children or persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities" unless someone responsible for their safety supervises or instructs them. Children are to be kept away from the reclining backrest and the extended leg rest. Six of the seven manuals list a child safety lock; four say it disables every function. The Radiance's manual lists none.

How long and how often to use a massage chair, in Cozzia's words

How long to use a massage chair has a firm answer, the same in the manuals for all seven Cozzia chairs at Merit. Each says "It is not recommended to use the massage chair for more than 30 minutes". How often has a looser answer, in Cozzia's Canadian FAQ, and none of the seven manuals sets a number of sessions a day or week.

Limit What Cozzia says
Timer range The spec page in each of the seven manuals gives a massage time of 5 to 30 minutes.
The Radiance's timer Starts at 15 minutes and changes in steps of 5.
Meals Not within an hour before or after eating, "as this may have adverse effects on the user".
Wet skin "Do not use the massage chair when your body is wet."
Alcohol "Avoid using the massage chair under the influence of alcohol."
Deep tissue programs Should "generally not exceed 30 minutes" (FAQ).
Relaxing programs Length "really doesn't matter" (the manuals still say no more than 30 minutes), going by "comfort and how you feel the next day" (FAQ).
How often "With regular 30 minutes use, you are able to have a massage daily" (FAQ).

For a first sit, four of the seven manuals describe a program "good for beginners or those that prefer a soft touch". They're the manuals for the Bliss ProFlex, Zen Duo, Qi XE Pro Duo and Radiance. Among the Radiance's five programs, it's the one called Gentle.

Is it okay to fall asleep in a massage chair?

Falling asleep in a massage chair runs against Cozzia's manual, which says not to use the chair "on a sleeping or unconscious person". That line sits in the heat warning quoted above, the one about burns at any setting. The timer ends each program within 30 minutes, and the manual still asks you to switch off the main power after use.

What a massage chair is, and what it isn't

Merit sells Cozzia's chairs as furniture, and none of Cozzia's seven manuals calls one a medical device. The manuals say the chair is "designed for home use and not for commercial purposes". They also say it "is not intended for self-treatment of conditions that should be managed by a qualified health care provider". A registered massage therapist assesses and treats by hand, and the work a therapist does that a chair can't has a guide of its own.

Health Canada keeps a database of every licensed Class II, III and IV medical device offered for sale in Canada. When we searched it on September 23, 2026, it listed no company under the name Cozzia or its parent, Xiamen Comfort Science and Technology. Class I devices need no licence and don't appear in it. So the search shows only that neither company holds an active licence for a Class II to IV device. The listing's records hold 93 licences with a form of "massage" in the name, from heating pads to foot massagers, and none is for a chair.

The Chair Doctor comes closest to a health reading. It's a hand sensor on the Qi XE Pro Duo and the Quantum, the two most expensive chairs Merit lists. Cozzia's manuals say it "diagnoses" body tension, SpO2 (oxygen saturation) and heart rate, and uses them to customize the massage. Neither manual says how accurate those readings are.

Massage chair side effects, and the signs to stop a session

Cozzia's FAQ names "muscle fatigue and soreness" as what comes of doing too much in one day. The manual's rule for anything that feels wrong is short: "Stop operation immediately if you feel any discomfort". If pain or discomfort comes on during a massage, it says to stop and consult your doctor.

Pressure on one spot is the next caution. Staying more than 5 minutes on the same spot "may result in excessive stimulation and may have adverse effects", the manual says. The rollers aren't meant for the head or the elbow and knee joints either. Hands and feet stay out of the roller paths, and legs that slip off the leg rest mid-massage aren't to be forced back in.

A massage chair is the wrong buy for anyone whose doctor advises against one, and for anyone outside Cozzia's size limits. Our comparison of all seven chairs sets those limits out model by model. A chair is also hard to hand back. Cozzia's warranty page says its customer service "will not issue Return Material Authorizations (RMAs) for products or for buyer's remorse". Our own practice is to encourage an exchange within 30 days and to treat returns case by case, even though Merit invoices say all sales are final. We're still confirming whether a massage chair falls under that, one more reason to have the doctor's answer before buying.

Trying a massage chair on the Island once your doctor has answered

A trial sit counts as using the chair, so anything on the lists above goes to your doctor before the showroom. After that, a phone call first saves a wasted trip. All seven Cozzia chairs Merit lists are sold through our Duncan showroom, open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5, at 107 Ingram Street. The store can tell you which of them are set up to sit in.

Bring your doctor's advice, and whoever is helping you choose. You won't have anyone following you around the floor, and a decision can wait for another day. If you'd like the gentlest program first, we'll start there.
