Exercise before bed looks fine for most healthy adults, going by a 2019 review in Sports Medicine that pooled 23 studies. I sell beds and ottomans, not training plans, so the answer here belongs to that review. It found that evening exercise didn't harm sleep overall. Its one caution was vigorous exercise ending one hour or less before bedtime, which might make it harder to fall asleep and shorten the night.
Exercise before bed means a workout, a walk or a stretch in the last few hours before you go to sleep.
I'm Michael Ruhr, co-owner of Merit Home Furniture, with four stores on Vancouver Island that carry mattresses for Island bedrooms; I work in Duncan. If you have heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or another health concern, HealthLink BC says to talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program.
Is exercise before bed bad for sleep?
Exercise before bed looks bad for sleep mainly when it's hard and late, going by the three larger studies below. Read together, they put the cut-off between one hour and four, depending on effort.
| Study | Who, and what it found |
|---|---|
| Stutz, Eiholzer and Spengler, Sports Medicine, 2019 | 23 studies of healthy adults after one evening session. No harm to sleep overall. Vigorous exercise ending an hour or less before bed might delay sleep and shorten it. |
| Frimpong and colleagues, Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2021 | 15 acute studies with 194 healthy good sleepers aged 18 to 50. High-intensity exercise 2 to 4 hours before bed didn't disrupt sleep. |
| Leota and colleagues, Nature Communications, 2025 | 14,689 active people wearing a fitness tracker for a year. Later, harder workouts went with later, shorter, poorer sleep. Workouts ending at least 4 hours before sleep showed no change. |
The Stutz review even found 1.3 percentage points more slow-wave sleep, the deepest stage, after evening exercise. The limits matter, though. Both reviews studied healthy adults, mostly after one evening. The 2025 study shows links rather than cause, and two of its authors work for Whoop, whose wrist device recorded the data.
How late is too late to exercise before bed?
How late is too late depends on effort. The 2019 review flagged vigorous exercise within an hour of bed. Hard sessions 2 to 4 hours out held up in the 2021 review, and the 2025 authors suggest lighter exercise inside four hours. None of this is a rule for someone with a sleep disorder. HealthLink BC keeps it simpler: get regular exercise, and work out which time of day suits your own sleep.
Is it good to exercise before bed? Why exercise helps sleep
Exercising before bed can be good for sleep in the sense that regular exercise, at any hour, seems to help. A 2015 meta-analysis in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine pooled 66 studies. Regular exercise had small benefits for total sleep time and moderate benefits for how well people rated their sleep. Time of day was one of several things that changed the effect.
Why it helps is for researchers to say; I won't guess at the biology. HealthLink BC's fitness page lists falling asleep and sleeping well among the benefits of being active. CSEP, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, links meeting its guidelines with a lower risk of anxiety and depression, and says progress toward any target brings some benefit.
How much exercise and sleep Canada's 24-hour guidelines count
The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines treat activity, sitting and sleep as one day. Here is CSEP's version for adults aged 18 to 64.
| Part of the day | CSEP's target |
|---|---|
| Moderate to vigorous activity | At least 150 minutes per week |
| Muscle strengthening | Major muscle groups, at least twice a week |
| Sleep | 7 to 9 hours of good-quality sleep, with consistent bed and wake-up times |
| Sitting | 8 hours or less, with no more than 3 hours of recreational screen time |
For adults 65 and older, CSEP keeps the 150 minutes, adds activities that challenge balance and sets sleep at 7 to 8 hours. It also says swapping sitting for more activity brings greater benefits "while preserving sufficient sleep". A late workout that cuts the night short trades one target for another.
Is 2 rest days in a week too much?
Two rest days from workouts can fit inside the guidelines. CSEP counts its 150 minutes across the week, so five shorter sessions reach it and so do three longer ones. It still asks adults to be physically active each day, light activity and standing included, so a rest day needn't mean a day of sitting. Whether your body needs more rest is a fair question for a doctor or a qualified exercise professional.
Best exercise before bed: the gentle options HealthLink BC names
HealthLink BC's insomnia tips don't name a bedtime workout. For the hour before bed they suggest something relaxing: deep breathing, yoga, meditation, tai chi or muscle relaxation, or a warm bath. For stretching in general, its fitness page says to begin slowly and build up bit by bit. The poses themselves I'll leave to a yoga teacher.
Short activity breaks also have a trial behind them. In a 2024 University of Otago study in New Zealand, 28 adults spent two evenings sitting for four hours. On one, they broke up the sitting every 30 minutes with 3 minutes of bodyweight exercise, including chair squats and calf raises. That night they slept 27.7 minutes longer, though it was one night in a small, young group.
Can I do heel raises in bed?
The Otago calf raises were a break from sitting in a chair, so that trial can't speak to heel raises lying in bed. No other source here tested exercise in bed either. HealthLink BC's insomnia page asks that the bed be kept for sleep and sex, which points to the floor beside it. A qualified exercise professional at 8-1-1 can say whether a particular move suits you.
A walk is gentle too, though Island winter evenings are dark. In a 2023 release, ICBC says nearly half (43%) of crashes involving pedestrians in BC happen between October and January. The president of the BC Association of Chiefs of Police asked walkers to wear light colours and reflectors.
Room for floor stretching before bed, and an ottoman beside it
Floor stretching before bed needs a clear strip about as long as you are, lying down. In a bedroom that's usually beside the bed or at its foot; in a living room, where the coffee table was. The walkway rule in our guide to sectionals for small living rooms is a fair test of whether a room keeps that space.
An ottoman is the piece I'd add: a low seat for pulling socks on afterwards, and with storage, a place for a rolled mat. Merit lists 31 ottomans for our Duncan store. These four show the range of sizes, priced before applicable taxes as our listings read on November 1, 2026.
| Ottoman | Size and price |
|---|---|
| Ashley Duntler storage ottoman | Round, 17.75 in across and 17.38 in high, lift-off top; $200.00 |
| Decor-Rest 3855 leather ottoman | 23 by 23 in, 19 in high; $899.00 |
| Ashley Lofwood ottoman | 49 in wide, 28 in deep, 19 in high; $416.00 |
| Ashley Elyza oversized ottoman | 42 by 42 in, 20 in high; $549.00 |
A small round one tucks against a wall when the floor is in use. An oversized one can swallow the strip you meant to keep clear, so I'd measure first. The Duntler and Decor-Rest listings say they're on display at our Duncan store; a call tells you what's set up that week. The rest are in the ottoman collection. From Duncan, Merit delivers an ottoman across the Island for $150 with setup and assembly, and pickup at the store is free.
When exercise before bed works against sleep
Exercise before bed works against sleep most clearly after a hard session that ends close to bedtime, the case flagged by both the 2019 review and the 2025 tracker study.
Body heat may play a part. In the Stutz review, a higher body temperature at bedtime went with less efficient sleep, though the link vanished when one study was taken out. Anyone who already sleeps warm can find the bed side of that in our guide for people who sleep hot.
A coffee before an evening workout runs into HealthLink BC's advice to have no caffeine for at least 6 hours before bedtime. Food after a late workout matters too, and a light bite before sleep is covered separately. And during any workout, its fitness page says to stop if you're panting, very short of breath or have pain in your chest.
An older Merit post paired evening workouts with a Beautyrest mattress, but none of these studies tested a mattress. Beautyrest beds are carried at our Campbell River store, as our page on the Beautyrest lines sets out.
Before starting evening workouts: the Get Active Questionnaire, 8-1-1 and 9-1-1
CSEP points pregnant people, and anyone living with a disability or a medical condition, to its Get Active Questionnaire or a health professional before using its guidelines. The questionnaire is a short self-check. A yes to any question leads to a reference sheet on whether to see a health care provider or a qualified exercise professional first.
HealthLink BC's heart attack page and its sleep and fitness pages set out when to act.
| What to do | When, per HealthLink BC |
|---|---|
| Call 9-1-1 | Heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain or pressure, sweating, shortness of breath or nausea, or pain in the back, neck, jaw, shoulders or arms. Don't drive yourself. |
| Get help right away | Talk of suicide or self-harm, or another crisis. Its sleep-problems checker lists Talk Suicide Canada, 1-833-456-4566, day or night. |
| Stop the activity | Panting, feeling very short of breath, or chest pain. If it might be a heart attack, call 9-1-1 right away. |
| Call a doctor | During home care for sleep problems, feeling very tired or struggling to function in the day, or symptoms coming more often or getting worse. |
| Run its checker | Choking or gasping for breath during sleep, or falling asleep while working or driving. |
For help deciding, 8-1-1 reaches HealthLink BC any time, where a nurse can assess symptoms, and 7-1-1 serves the deaf and hard of hearing. Its qualified exercise professionals take calls through 8-1-1 from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Questions about exercise and blood sugar belong with your doctor or a HealthLink BC dietitian, not with a furniture store like Merit.

Seeing ottomans and bedroom furniture at our Duncan store
Our Duncan showroom, at 107 Ingram St, keeps Monday to Saturday hours of 9 to 5. Most pieces there are display models, so ring ahead to ask which ottomans are out, and bring the measurements of the floor you'd like to keep clear. Take as long as you like; there's no pressure to decide on the day.
Other sleep questions, from pillows to mattress sizes, are gathered on the Island mattress and sleep guides page. A sore back is its own subject, covered in what a mattress can and can't do for back pain.
