A downdraft range earns its place where a hood can't go: an island, a peninsula or a window wall. For a kitchen where big pots boil most nights, I'd lean toward a hood wherever one fits. In one Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory test, a downdraft vent caught over 90% of a back-burner plume at 150 CFM. A taller pot on a front burner gave below 30%, even at 500 CFM.
A downdraft range is a range with its kitchen fan built into the cooktop, so smoke and steam get pulled down and away instead of rising into a hood overhead. The vent handles low pans near it well and tall pots at the front poorly. I'm Michael Ruhr, co-owner of Merit Home Furniture, and I write these guides from Duncan on Vancouver Island. What follows weighs downdraft venting against an overhead range hood, for islands, gas burners and ductwork under the floor.
Merit's appliance shelves hold no downdraft range at the moment. The listings hold six KitchenAid downdraft cooktops and four pop-up vents from KitchenAid and Bosch. Merit Duncan, where I work, has stepped back from appliances, so these come through our Campbell River store or as special orders.
What is a downdraft range, and how does the vent pull air down?
A downdraft range is a range with a vent opening in the cooktop and a blower underneath it. The blower draws air sideways across the cooking surface and pushes it down a duct to the outdoors, or through filters and back into the room. KitchenAid's guide to downdraft says the vent on its ranges is typically in the middle of the cooktop.
Updraft is the plain name for the opposite approach: a hood above the stove, catching hot air on its way up. Heat rises on its own, so an overhead hood works with the plume. A downdraft vent works against it, which is why its reach is short.
Integrated downdraft, flush with the cooktop
An integrated vent sits level with the cooking surface. On the KitchenAid gas and electric cooktops we list, it's a slot down the centre. On the two induction models, it's a round grille in the middle of the glass, between the cooking zones.
Pop-up downdraft that rises behind the cooktop
A pop-up vent, also called a retractable downdraft, mounts behind a cooktop or slide-in range and rises when switched on. Our KitchenAid Specialty Series listing says its vent rises 14 inches to help over tall stockpots. Bosch's spec sheet gives 15 inches for its 36-inch 800 Series vent.
Are downdraft ranges any good at clearing smoke and steam?
Downdraft ranges are good at clearing what stays low and close to the vent, and weak with what rises fast away from it. Independent testing is thin. The clearest figures I found come from Jordan Clark, Iain Walker and Gabriel Rojas at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. They built a full-size kitchen island mock-up and measured one downdraft vent with tracer gas.
| What was tested | Result |
|---|---|
| Downdraft, back burner, shallow pan, 150 CFM | over 90% captured |
| Downdraft, front burner, taller emitter, up to 500 CFM | below 30% captured |
| Downdraft, tall pot against other emitters | capture differed by up to 35% |
| Overhead hood on high, 300 cubic feet per minute (Health Canada) | more than 80% less exposure than slower speeds |
The researchers found a downdraft vent depends on where the pot sits, and how tall it is, more than other kitchen vents do. They put the tall-pot gap down to the pot reaching past the vent's zone of pull. Two burners running at once did worse than any single burner, except at the top airflow. It was one Broan vent over electric hot plates, and the authors ask for more testing.
KitchenAid's guide says downdraft can be just as effective as overhead ventilation, and for a frying pan on a back element the lab numbers agree. Health Canada reports particle levels up to 65 times above background after cooking, and asks that a range hood fully extend over the burners. With any downdraft, I'd turn the fan on before the heat and put the tallest pot nearest the vent, as KitchenAid advises.
A gas downdraft range or cooktop: what the flame changes
A gas downdraft range or cooktop has combustion gases to clear as well as cooking smoke. Health Canada names nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide as by-products of cooking on gas, and recommends at least one carbon monoxide alarm in every home.
The vent also pulls sideways on the flame. KitchenAid's guide says gas cooks should use a lower fan setting or a higher burner setting, and the lowest fan speed the pot allows. Our two KitchenAid gas downdraft cooktops each list a 17K BTU burner and a 300 CFM vent. The 30-inch one comes with an LP conversion kit for homes on propane.
Bosch's spec sheet for its 36-inch vent says the recirculation kit isn't compatible with gas cooktops, so a gas setup with that vent needs a duct outdoors.
Downdraft ventilation range and cooktop listings at Merit
Merit's ranges collection held 210 listings when I read it on November 1, 2026, and none of them is a downdraft ventilation range. What we list instead is cooktops with the vent built in, and pop-up vents that pair with a cooktop or slide-in range. Prices are before applicable taxes.

The 30-inch KitchenAid induction cooktop is listed at our Campbell River store. The other nine are special orders, and their pages give (250) 746-5527 as the line to order through. Three of the 36-inch KitchenAid listings describe a 30-inch unit in their text, so the model number on the page is the one to quote on the phone.
Which range has a built-in downdraft?
Two downdraft ranges on makers' Canadian sites are worth knowing. KitchenAid's KSEG950ESS is a 30-inch electric slide-in, and its page says a duct-free kit is sold separately. JennAir's JES1750FS is a 30-inch electric range, and JennAir calls downdraft its brand's original innovation. Below the vent, both are ordinary ranges with true convection ovens. KitchenAid lists a 6 and 10-inch double element, and JennAir a two-size element at one position. Neither is in Merit's listings, so I can't give you our price. Campbell River or Port Alberni can tell you whether one can be ordered.
Do downdraft ranges need to be vented outside?
Downdraft ranges don't strictly need venting outside, but ducting to the outdoors is how they clear the most. Most of the listings above offer a recirculating kit, sold separately, which catches grease and some odour and returns the air, steam and all. Health Canada notes that water vapour from cooking can lead to mould, which is worth weighing through a damp Island winter.
A ducted downdraft usually runs down rather than up. The blower sits in the cabinet below, and the duct leaves through the floor to a crawlspace or basement, or out the back wall. Bosch's vent can send its duct out the front, left, right, rear or straight down. KitchenAid's help page caps the run at 60 feet (18.3 m) of equivalent length, with no more than three 90-degree elbows. Its tips assume 6-inch round or 3.25 by 10-inch duct, and it doesn't recommend flexible metal duct.
Cabinet space a downdraft takes up
The cabinet under a downdraft cooktop gives up room to the blower, the duct and, for a pop-up, the vent box. Our KitchenAid Specialty Series listing has a reversible motor box that mounts on either side to free some of it. Bosch sells inline and remote blowers that move the motor out of the cabinet.
Downdraft or an overhead range hood on an island or peninsula
On an island, a downdraft range or cooktop keeps the view across the room open and needs no duct through the ceiling. An island hood hangs from the ceiling and sends its duct up through it. Merit lists seven island hoods, from $1,054.99 to $3,699.00 before applicable taxes. The one listed at a store is the Frigidaire 42 in. glass canopy hood, which moves 400 CFM and lists at $1,749.00 at our Port Alberni store. The other six are special orders.
A peninsula puts one end of the cooktop near a wall or a tall cabinet. KitchenAid's help page recommends 6 inches from a downdraft vent to nearby cabinets or walls, and says cabinets set too close can leave dead air pockets that weaken it. On a peninsula, I'd measure that gap before settling on a cooktop.
Downdraft vent
Fits an island, a peninsula or a window wall, and leaves sightlines alone. Clears low pans on back burners well, struggles with tall pots up front, takes cabinet space and costs more.
Overhead range hood
Meets steam from above, tall pots included, when it covers the burners. Costs far less, but needs wall or ceiling space and a duct up and out.
Here's how the setups compare on price in our listings, before applicable taxes. A hood or pop-up vent still needs a cooktop or range under it, while a downdraft cooktop's price includes the cooking surface.
| Setup | Air moved | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Broan Glacier 30 in. under-cabinet hood | 350 CFM | $249.00 to $269.00 |
| Broan Alta 30 in. under-cabinet hood | 640 CFM | $749.00 |
| Frigidaire 42 in. island hood | 400 CFM | $1,749.00 |
| KitchenAid or Bosch pop-up vent | 600 CFM, Bosch blower sold separately | $2,199.99 to $2,799.00 |
| KitchenAid downdraft cooktop | 300 CFM where printed | $3,199.99 to $4,499.99 |
Make-up air for a downdraft range under the BC Building Code
Make-up air is outdoor air let in to replace what an exhaust fan pushes out. KitchenAid's help page says a downdraft vent may not vent properly in a house that's too tight. A 600 CFM pop-up vent moves twice the air of a 300 CFM cooktop, so it pulls harder on the house.
The BC Building Code adds a rule for homes with a woodstove or wood fireplace, which a 2023 Town of Gibsons building bulletin sums up. An exhaust fan above 0.5 air changes per hour needs tempered make-up air from a supply fan, interconnected with that exhaust. That applies when the home has an appliance that can backdraft, and solid fuel appliances count, sealed woodstoves included, apart from a narrow mobile-home exception. Passive inlets don't satisfy the rule, which sits in Division B, 9.32.4.1. The bulletin was written before the 2024 code took effect, so the building department has the current wording. Here's the order I'd plan a downdraft kitchen in:
- Find the duct route. Through the floor, out the back wall, or nowhere. With the Bosch vent, no duct means an electric or induction cooktop.
- List your fuel-burning appliances. A woodstove or wood fireplace brings in the make-up air rule.
- Talk to your installer and building department. Do it with the model number in hand, before any countertop is ordered.
Where a downdraft range falls short
A downdraft range falls short with cooking that sends steam up fast, like a tall stockpot or a big pot of pasta water on a front burner. In the Berkeley mock-up, a front burner captured nearly 80% worse than a back burner at the same power. KitchenAid's own guide says a higher heat setting may be needed to make up for the airflow across the cooktop.
Noise and upkeep add up. Our KitchenAid Specialty Series vent listing gives 7.0 to 9.0 sones, and a KitchenAid stainless downdraft grease filter lists at $249.99.
Read the Bosch price with care. Bosch's spec sheets for both vents list the blower as sold separately, and Merit's listings don't say whether one is included. For a kitchen where big pots boil most nights, I'd lean toward an overhead hood wherever one fits.

Asking about a downdraft cooktop in Campbell River or Port Alberni
Downdraft cooktops and vents come through Merit's Campbell River showroom at 1300 A Homewood Rd, or by special order. The overhead hoods above are split between Campbell River and Port Alberni, at 2935 Third Ave. I write from Duncan, which no longer carries appliances, so one of those two stores is the right first call, with the cutout size and model numbers handy.
Appliance delivery and installation terms at those stores aren't confirmed yet, so it's worth asking about both. What each maker's warranty covers, and who does the repair, has a guide of its own. Courtenay and Comox kitchens are served from Campbell River now, as our Comox Valley page explains, and the rundown of our four showrooms shows what each one carries.
Ring Campbell River about downdraft, (250) 286-0868, or Port Alberni, (250) 724-6644. The special-order line is (250) 746-5527.
Every cooktop we list sits in one collection, beside the overhead range hoods and the ranges we list, none of them downdraft. The rest of our kitchen writing is gathered on one hub page for Merit appliance guides.
