Mattress in a box vs regular mattress: what the box trades away, and where our boxed beds are carried

Primo Balance euro top mattress shipped in a box - Merit Home Furniture

A mattress in a box is a foam or hybrid mattress that the factory compresses, rolls and ships in a carton. It opens back to full size on your frame. A regular mattress travels flat and is carried in ready to sleep on. The box is a way of shipping a mattress rather than a kind of mattress. The real differences are in buying, trying, returning and getting it into the house.

Here is the short answer from the Merit store in Duncan. A boxed bed is easy to ship, goes up a tight staircase and usually comes with a long home trial. A regular mattress from a store can be lain on before you pay, is carried in and set up, and the old one can leave the same day. Merit Home Furniture lists 62 mattresses across its stores, and 14 of them can be ordered through our Duncan store. Those 14 are Restwell and Restonic beds, and none of their pages says the bed ships compressed or rolled. Our Duncan mattresses are regular mattresses, not boxed beds.

The boxed beds we do list sit at two of our other stores. Of the 62, 20 are described on their own pages as shipping in a box: nine Primo, ten Ashley and one Seva. Campbell River carries 5 of them and Port Alberni 17, with two Primo Balance models at both. The Primo Balance, the Ashley foam and hybrid beds and the Seva Cool are priced by the store that carries them, so a call there gets our best price. Duncan prices below are before applicable taxes, read from our product pages on October 16, 2026.

What a mattress in a box is, and what counts as a regular mattress

A mattress in a box starts life as an ordinary mattress. Foam layers, or foam over wrapped coils, are vacuum compressed, rolled tight and sealed in plastic so the carton fits a courier van. Once the plastic is cut away, the foam draws in air and recovers its height. Consumer Reports says this can take a few hours or a couple of days.

A regular mattress, also called a traditional or showroom mattress, is built from the same families of materials. It simply leaves the factory flat and stays flat until it reaches your bedroom. The traditional mattress types are these three, and the label on any of them tells you the build, never the packaging:

  • All foam. Memory foam or poly foam layers with no coils. Quiet, light for its size, and simple to compress.
  • Pocket coil. Steel coils sewn into separate fabric pockets, with foam or fibre quilted on top.
  • Hybrid. Wrapped coils under thicker foam or latex comfort layers. The Ashley 12 Inch Hybrid at our Port Alberni store is one that ships compressed in a box.

So the boxed or regular question sits on top of the foam, coil or hybrid question. Our guide to what sits inside foam, coil and hybrid beds covers construction. This one covers everything around it.

Mattress in a box vs regular mattress, side by side

The table compares a typical online boxed bed with a mattress bought through Merit in Duncan. Figures for online sellers come from Consumer Reports and the sellers' own pages.

Boxed, bought online Bought through Duncan
Lie on it first Usually not, unless a store displays it Yes, when the model is on display; call to ask which are set up
Return or exchange Home trial, usually 100 days Exchanges encouraged up to 30 days, case by case
Arrives as A carton of 60 to 150 pounds at the door Delivered and set up, $150 from Duncan
First night After the foam recovers The night it arrives
Old mattress Yours to deal with Take-away usually $25 to $50 a piece
Wait Set by each brand 2 to 3 weeks for mattresses

Two of those rows carry most of the decision. A long home trial lets you test a bed over weeks of real sleep, at the cost of buying it unseen. A store lets you test it for a quarter hour before paying, at the cost of a shorter exchange window. Consumer Reports has long advised lying on a mattress in a store for at least 15 minutes before buying.

Are mattresses in a box worth buying?

Mattresses in a box are worth buying for the right room and the right sleeper. The packaging itself says little about the bed inside. Tom's Guide, which tests both kinds, puts it plainly. In its words, "the delivery method has little to do with the quality of your mattress". What changes is the buying, and that suits some households far better than others.

Where a boxed bed makes sense

A guest room, a cabin, a rental suite or a first apartment. A second floor reached by a narrow turn that has beaten a flat mattress before. A tight budget can point the same way, since the lowest-priced queen listed for Duncan is the Restwell Canary at $899.00.

Where a regular mattress earns its price

A couple who sit on the edge every morning, a sleeper who wants a taller build, or anyone whose last mattress bought unseen did not suit. Also anyone who cannot lift a heavy carton up the stairs, or who wants the old bed gone.

Height is one place the difference shows. The Ashley 8 Inch Memory Foam, a boxed bed at Port Alberni, is 8 in. tall. The Restwell Canary, listed for Duncan, is 12 in., with an 8 in. pocket coil under 3 in. of foam layers. The Canary also has a foam-encased edge, which our product page describes as built for sitting and sleeping near the edge.

Sleep trials and store exchanges: online brands and Merit compared

Online mattress brands compete hard on trial length, and their terms are generous. Here are two Canadian sellers' published terms next to Merit's, checked October 3, 2026.

Seller Window and terms
One online brand 365 nights, for mattresses bought on or after November 15, 2025. No fee or deductible on a return; one exchange; one trial per customer, on a first mattress order
A second online brand 100 nights. A courier packs up and removes the mattress; full refund to the original payment
Merit, Duncan Exchanges encouraged up to 30 days, case by case. Special orders carry a 24% deposit

The online windows are longer than ours, and that is a real advantage for anyone who cannot get to a store. Consumer Reports adds a caution: some companies require you to try the mattress for at least 30 days before arranging a return. The details worth reading are who collects the bed, when, and how many exchanges are allowed.

Provincial rules cover a different problem. Consumer Protection BC calls an online purchase a distance sales contract. If the item is not supplied within 30 days of the promised date, you can cancel, and the business has 15 days to refund you. A comfort return, though, rests on the seller's own trial terms. How we handle exchanges and special-order deposits has a guide of its own.

Our boxed mattresses at Campbell River and Port Alberni, beside a regular one

The Primo Balance 12 has wrapped coils under a medium plush euro top, and its title says it comes in a box. Our page lists it in king only, 76 by 80 in. and 12 in. tall, at 89 pounds. Its warranty is listed as 10 Year Non Prorated, so the coverage does not shrink as the mattress ages. Both our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores carry this king, and either can quote our best price on it.

Ashley's boxed beds are all at our Port Alberni store. They run from a 6 in. Bonnell coil queen with a 1-year limited warranty to a 14 in. hybrid queen. The Ashley 12 Inch Hybrid puts 680 wrapped coils in the queen, under gel memory foam, and Ashley rates it firm.

Primo Balance euro top mattress shipped in a box - Merit Home Furniture
Mattress Build, packaging, store and price
Primo Balance 12 Wrapped coils, euro top; mattress in a box; Campbell River and Port Alberni, phone either for a price
Ashley 12 Inch Hybrid Wrapped coils, firm; ships compressed in a box; Port Alberni, price by phone
Seva Cool 9 in. Gel memory foam over a foam core, twin; compressed and rolled in a box; Port Alberni, price by phone
Restwell Canary 1,200-count 5-zone pocket coil, firm; not listed as boxed; $899.00 queen, listed for Duncan

The boxed beds are quoted by phone, so the price gap takes a call to work out. Campbell River or Port Alberni can quote a boxed queen to set against the Canary at $899.00. For its price the Canary adds zoning, with firmer coils under the lower back, plus a reinforced edge. Trying a boxed bed at one of those stores and a regular one in Duncan is how to tell whether that matters to your back. The other Restwell beds listed for Duncan are in our guide to the Restwell range.

What are the drawbacks of a mattress in a box?

The drawbacks of a mattress in a box are weight, waiting, smell and the return. None of them is serious for a buyer who plans around them.

Weight comes first. Consumer Reports puts boxed cartons at 60 to 150 pounds, and they are awkward to grip. Ashley lists 47 pounds for its 8 in. memory foam queen and 116.22 pounds for its 12 in. hybrid queen. Getting one up a staircase is often a two-person job, even though it turns corners easily.

Then the wait and the smell. New foam gives off an odour after unwrapping, which Consumer Reports says should fade in a few hours or, at most, a few days. CertiPUR-US, which certifies the foam in Ashley's 12 in. hybrid and in the Restwell Canary, tests for low emissions, with VOCs below 0.5 ppm. Opening a window in the first days helps.

Last, the return. Once a boxed bed is open, it will not go back in its carton. Consumer Reports notes that some sellers pick the mattress up, while others put you in touch with a charity or recycler. Consumer Reports also notes that boxed beds are generally sold at a fixed price.

What happens if you sleep on it before 24 hours?

The maker's card in the box gives the timing, and it varies by model. Ashley's pages for several of its boxed beds say to allow 48 hours to fully expand. Until the foam reaches full height, the first night may not match the feel it settles at, so judge the firmness after a few nights.

Getting a mattress into an Island house: stairs, delivery and the old one

Stairs are where the box earns its keep. A rolled queen in a carton turns a landing that a flat queen, 60 in. wide and nearly 80 in. long, may not clear. In an older house with a tight stairwell, the narrowest turn is worth measuring before choosing. The full, queen and king measurements are listed in inches and centimetres.

Delivery from our Duncan store is $150 across the Island, and it includes assembly. For the Gulf Islands, the Duncan store can say which islands it delivers to. A mattress going across the Island may need a different shipping method, so ask when you call. The other three stores set their own delivery and setup terms, so ask the store nearest you.

Mattresses take 2 to 3 weeks until they are ready for pickup or delivery, and pickup at Duncan is free. Pillows, protectors and other small items can come with the mattress delivery, so a Health Guard bamboo protector goes on the bed the day it arrives. When we deliver, Duncan can take away the old mattress, usually for $25 to $50 a piece and sometimes included.

A boxed foam bed also needs a firm, even base, so whether you need a box spring comes up early. Foam laid over slats with wide gaps can sag between them, so the frame underneath and its slat spacing are worth checking before the carton arrives.

From the showroom floor

Some of the people who walk into our Duncan store have already tried a mattress bought online. A few have told Rubeena and me they would not buy another without lying on it first. Our Duncan beds are all regular Restwell and Restonic mattresses, so for a boxed one we point them to Campbell River or Port Alberni.

Which mattress to stay away from, boxed or regular

The first mattress to avoid is one whose return terms are still unread. That means who collects it, any minimum number of nights, and how many exchanges are allowed. Terms differ from brand to brand, and from store to store.

A thin boxed mattress for a heavier sleeper is a gamble unless it has been lain on. An 8 in. bed has less room for comfort layers than a 12 in. one, and that shows at the hips and the edge.

A boxed bed is the wrong pick if nobody in the house can lift a 62 pound carton upstairs, the weight Ashley gives for its Chime queen. It is also wrong if the bed has to be slept on the night it lands. A regular one is the wrong pick if a flat queen cannot make the turn on your stairs. Warranty wording is worth comparing too, since limited and non-prorated are different promises.
