To get pee stains out of a mattress, I'd move fast and keep a light hand. Blot up as much as you can while it's wet, clean the spot with mild soap and cold water, then dry it all the way through. Fresh ones usually come out. Old, dried ones often fade without vanishing.
A urine stain is the yellow mark left when pee soaks through the mattress cover, called the ticking, into the padding underneath. I'm Michael Ruhr at Merit Home Furniture in Duncan, and one point goes up front. Restwell and Restonic, the main mattress lines at our Duncan store, both say in print that a stain voids the warranty. So the sections that follow cover urine, blood and pet accidents, and how to keep the next one off the bed.
Can you get pee stains out of a mattress?
Yes, a pee stain can usually be lifted from a mattress if you get to it while it's wet. The trouble is depth. A mattress has no drain, so whatever gets past the ticking sits in the foam or fibre layers and dries there. Surface cleaning lightens what you see, and an enzyme cleaner can deal with what you smell. Neither one rinses the inner layers the way a washing machine rinses a sheet.
Old stains are a different case. A yellow ring that dried weeks ago has usually spread wider underneath than it looks on top, so the honest goal is a lighter mark and no smell. If the odour keeps coming back after a couple of careful tries, the urine has gone deeper than home cleaning reaches. Merit's guide on the signs a mattress has reached the end is worth a read then.
How to get pee stains out of a mattress while it's still wet
Fresh urine on a mattress comes out with towels, cold water and some patience, and the order matters more than the product. This is how I'd go about it, built on the rule Sealy Canada prints for its own beds: "use mild soap with cold water and apply lightly".
- Strip the bed. Sheets, any pad and the protector go straight into the wash.
- Blot, don't rub. Press a folded dry towel hard onto the wet patch, then move to a dry part and press again. Rubbing spreads urine sideways and down into the padding.
- Dab with soapy cold water. A few drops of dish soap in a bowl of cold water, on a cloth wrung out until it's nearly dry. Work from the edge of the stain toward the middle.
- Take the soap back out. Dab with a second cloth dampened in plain cold water, then press the area dry with a towel.
- Add baking soda once it's only damp. Leave it to sit, then vacuum it off with the upholstery tool.
For the sheets and pyjamas, HealthLink BC suggests adding 125 mL (0.5 cup) of vinegar to the wash water to get rid of the urine odour. It's written for bedwetting laundry, and it's worth trying on any bedding whose care label allows it.
Dried urine and yellow stains on a mattress
Dried urine on a mattress takes the same tools as a fresh spill, used more slowly. Dampen the ring lightly with cold soapy water, give it a few minutes, then blot. For an old stain that smells, an enzyme cleaner made for urine is the stronger choice. Leave it on as long as its label says, and blot rather than pour.
How to get yellow stains out of a mattress depends on where the yellow came from. A ring with a darker edge is usually an old accident. An even yellowing over one sleeping spot is usually sweat and skin oil that worked into the ticking night after night. Both lighten with cold soapy water, though neither is likely to go back to white. I'd aim for clean and odour-free over spotless.
Why is my husband's side of the mattress yellow?
One side of a mattress yellows faster when the person sleeping there runs warmer or sweats more. The Sleep Foundation says large yellow stains are "typically caused by the buildup of sweat and body oils over time". It adds that how much a person sweats changes how fast they form. Nothing is wrong with the bed. A washable protector catches that sweat instead.
Mattress urine stain removal without hydrogen peroxide
Mattress urine stain removal works without hydrogen peroxide for most stains, and I'd start without it. Peroxide is a bleach: New Mexico State University's stain guide lists it with the bleaches, beside lemon juice and chlorine bleach. The Sleep Foundation warns that "Hydrogen peroxide can also discolor fabric", and that it can damage foam or latex mattresses.
The makers lean cautious too. Restonic's warranty card says not to use cleaning fluids on the mattress, because "The chemicals may damage some of the materials". Restwell and Sealy both rule out dry cleaning fluid of any type. If you still want to try peroxide on a white cover, the University of Georgia Extension's rule applies: pretest it on an inconspicuous area first.
How to remove pee stains from a mattress without hydrogen peroxide
- Mild dish soap in cold water, dabbed and blotted, for fresh stains.
- An enzyme cleaner made for urine, used to its label, for old stains and smells.
- White vinegar and water in equal parts, dabbed on and rinsed off. Skip it for cat accidents.
- Baking soda on the dry spot, then vacuumed, for odour.
Use them one at a time and rinse in between. Health Canada's household chemical advice says "Never mix household chemical products together", because some mixtures give off harmful gases. I'd count peroxide and vinegar under that rule, so never pour the two into one spray bottle.
What kills the scent of pee in a mattress?
For the scent of pee in a mattress, I'd reach for an enzyme cleaner made for urine before anything in the kitchen cupboard. For pet accidents, the Sleep Foundation's advice is plain: "It's better to use an enzyme cleaner designed to neutralize pet urine instead of a homemade cleaning solution". It suggests baking soda as the follow-up, left on for at least 8 hours to soak up moisture and odour, then vacuumed.
Pet urine stains on a mattress
Pet urine calls for the enzyme route, cat urine most of all. The BC SPCA's cat care guide points owners to an enzymatic cleaner from a pet store. It warns that regular cleaning products or even vinegar "could make it worse and encourage your cat to spray". A pet that suddenly starts peeing on the bed is worth a call to the vet. The same guide suggests a vet visit to rule out a medical issue.
Blood and other stains on a Sealy, Restwell or Restonic mattress
Blood on a mattress comes out with cold water and repeated blotting. The University of Georgia Extension's guidance is "Always use cool water when removing blood stains", and it adds that stains set by heat are hard to remove. Dab with a cloth wrung out in cold water, blot, and keep turning to a clean part of the cloth. The same cold water rule holds for removing blood stains from clothes in the wash, shirts and pyjamas included.
Sealy Canada's care page is the most detailed of the three makers on cleaning. It says "Vacuuming is the only recommended cleaning method", gives the mild soap and cold water rule for a stain, and adds "Don't ever soak a mattress or foundation". Merit carries Sealy mattresses at our Campbell River store, where a call gets our best price. Our page on the Posturepedic beds and their warranty covers the rest.
| Maker | On stains and liquids | On cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| Restwell | "Any kind of staining will void the warranty". Keep the mattress dry. | No dry cleaning fluid of any type. |
| Restonic | "Stains, soiling, fluid penetration or other signs of abuse will void the warranty". | No cleaning fluids, and don't let it get wet. |
| Sealy | Use a mattress pad, and protect the bed from water or other liquids. | Vacuum. For a stain, mild soap and cold water, applied lightly. Never soak. |
The Restonic wording comes from the warranty card and FAQ Restonic publishes online; the card that comes with your mattress is the one that counts. To put a number on it, Merit's listing for the Restonic Minto shows $888.00 in queen, before applicable taxes, with a 10-year non-prorated warranty. One accident that leaves a mark puts that at risk.
How to dry a mattress after cleaning a stain
Drying a mattress properly matters as much as the cleaning, because damp padding holds on to odour. The Sleep Foundation says it can take "several hours to several days", depending on the size of the stain and the humidity in the room. In a damp Island winter, I'd plan on the long end.
Set a fan blowing across the spot and run a dehumidifier if you have one. If two people can lift the mattress safely, stand it on its side so air reaches the underside. Keep it back from a woodstove or baseboard heater, since heat can set a blood stain. Make the bed only once the spot feels dry under a pressed hand.
Waterproof mattress protectors for kids' beds, pets and the warranty
A waterproof protector is the lasting answer to pee stains, because it stops urine at a layer that goes in the washing machine. Merit lists seven Health Guard mattress protectors for our Duncan store, each listed as waterproof, breathable and machine washable. Twin and queen prices, from our listings on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes:
| Health Guard protector | Twin | Queen |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Terry | $49.00 | $69.00 |
| Cotton Touch | $89.00 | $109.00 |
| Tencel Dream | $109.00 | $129.00 |
| Organic Bamboo | $169.00 | $189.00 |
| Active Charcoal | $169.00 | $189.00 |
| Bamboo Plus | $189.00 | $249.00 |
| Cool Ice | $189.00 | $249.00 |
A queen Premium Terry at $69.00 against a queen Minto at $888.00 is easy arithmetic. For a child who wets at night, I'd keep a spare protector and spare sheets folded nearby. Our guide to how top-side and five-sided protectors differ covers the waterproof layer and skirt depth.
Kids who wet the mattress at night
Once a protector is on, bedwetting becomes a laundry job. HealthLink BC says treatment usually is not needed for bedwetting in children ages 7 and younger, since most learn bladder control over time. It says treatment may help a child older than 7 who wets the bed at least 2 times a week for at least 3 months. Talk to your child's doctor about that, or if wetting starts again after at least 3 months of dry nights. HealthLink BC adds that children don't wet the bed on purpose, and shaming them may make it worse.
Mattress stain mistakes that cost more than the stain
- Soaking the spot. Sealy says never soak a mattress, and Restwell and Restonic say not to let one get wet.
- Mixing cleaners in one bottle. Health Canada warns some mixtures give off harmful gases.
- Peroxide on a coloured cover with no hidden test first. It can lighten the fabric for good.
- Hot water, a steamer or a hair dryer on blood. Heat can set it.
- Making the bed over a damp patch. The sheets hold the moisture in, and the smell tends to return.
- Turning a stained mattress over. It hides the mark from you, not from the maker's inspection.

Getting a waterproof mattress protector from Merit's Duncan store
Merit doesn't ship protectors, sheets or other small items. They're picked up free at our Duncan store at 107 Ingram St, ready about 2 business days after the item reaches Duncan, or added to a mattress delivery. Health Guard is usually in stock, and we confirm when you call. If a stain has finished the old bed, look at the Restwell mattress lineup or Restonic's mattress range. A new one takes 2 to 3 weeks, then it's ready for pickup or delivery. From Duncan, delivery is $150 across the Island, with setup included.
Tell us the mattress size and depth when you call, and we'll match a protector to it. Duncan's hours are 9 to 5, Monday to Saturday.
