Chest freezer vs upright freezer: real kWh, prices, outages and garage ratings

Frigidaire 14.8 cu ft convertible chest freezer in white - Merit Home Furniture

In the chest freezer vs upright freezer choice, I'd lean to a chest if running cost and price matter most. A chest uses less electricity for its size and usually costs less to buy. An upright takes about half the floor, keeps food where you can see it, and most uprights defrost themselves. If floor space is tight, or someone finds a deep box hard to dig through, the upright earns its bigger power bill.

A chest freezer is a low box freezer with a lid on top. An upright freezer stands like a fridge, with a front door, shelves and door bins.

Merit Home Furniture lists 40 chest freezers and 40 upright freezers for Vancouver Island among its cold-storage appliances, as of November 1, 2026. Of those, 15 chests and 25 uprights are carried at Campbell River, Port Alberni or both; the rest are special orders. Merit Duncan, where I work, no longer carries appliances. So the comparison works from the makers' Canadian spec sheets, EnerGuide figures and our own listings.

Chest freezer vs upright freezer: which uses less electricity?

A chest freezer uses less electricity than an upright of about the same size, in all three matched pairs on Merit's listings below. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) gives two reasons. A door that opens from the top lets less cold air escape, and manual defrost freezers use half the energy of automatic defrost models.

Freezer Rated use Cost a year
Danby DCF100A5WDB chest, 10.0 cu ft, manual defrost 211 kWh a year $25.05
Danby Designer DUFM101A2WDD upright, 10.1 cu ft, manual defrost 261 kWh a year $30.98
Frigidaire FFCL1562AW chest, 14.8 cu ft, manual defrost 296 kWh a year $35.14
Frigidaire FFUE1626AW upright, 16 cu ft, frost-free 415 kWh a year $49.26
Frigidaire FFCL2062AW chest, 19.8 cu ft, manual defrost 361 kWh a year $42.85
Frigidaire FFUV2126AW upright, 21 cu ft, frost-free 493 kWh a year $58.52

Costs use BC Hydro's Tier 1 residential rate of 11.87 cents per kWh, before the basic charge and taxes. Neither Danby defrosts itself, yet the upright still uses 50 kWh more. The frost-free Frigidaire uprights use over 100 kWh more than their chests.

Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations build the same gap into their limits. A chest freezer may use no more than 0.257 AV + 107.8 kWh a year, where AV is the adjusted volume in litres. A frost-free upright is allowed 0.305 AV + 228.3. The Frigidaire uprights carry ENERGY STAR and the Frigidaire chests don't, yet the chests use less. NRCan says an ENERGY STAR freezer uses 10% less energy, on average, than a standard model, and it suggests comparing EnerGuide labels between similar models.

How much electricity does a freezer use per day?

A freezer in the table uses between about 0.6 and 1.4 kWh a day, taking its yearly rating and dividing by 365. The 14.8 cu ft Frigidaire chest works out to about 0.8 kWh a day, and the 16 cu ft Frigidaire upright to about 1.1 kWh. EnerGuide ratings come from a lab test to the CSA C300 standard. A freezer opened often, or sitting in a hot garage in August, will likely use more than its label.

Chest and upright freezer prices on Merit's listings

Chest freezers cost less than uprights across our listings, though the gap closes in the mid-sized Frigidaires. Every price here is the listed one on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes.

Type Carried at Campbell River or Port Alberni Special order
Chest freezers 15 listings, $279 to $1,399 25 listings, $209.99 to $1,399.99
Upright freezers 25 listings, $519.99 to $3,699 15 listings, $479 to $8,499

Matched by size, the Danby 10 cu ft chest is $529.99 and the Danby Designer 10.1 cu ft upright is $859.99, both at Port Alberni.

The Frigidaire pairs come closer. The 14.8 cu ft chest is $899 and the 16 cu ft upright is $849 in white, both carried at Campbell River and Port Alberni. The 19.8 cu ft chest and 21 cu ft upright are $1,099 each. If today's Tier 1 rate held, the 119 kWh a year between the two smaller Frigidaires would add about $141 over ten years.

Usable space and organisation in a chest or upright freezer

A chest freezer is one open box, so a turkey, a whole salmon or a flat of berries goes in without fighting a shelf. The Frigidaire 14.8 cu ft chest has two removable baskets across the top, and the Maytag 16 cu ft chest has three. A summer's worth of garden vegetables fits too, after a quick blanch.

An upright splits its space into shelves and door bins. The Frigidaire 16 cu ft upright has four adjustable glass shelves and five door bins, so a glance shows what's there.

For organizing a chest freezer, I'd give each basket one job, keep a list taped to the lid, and put the newest packages underneath.

Chest freezer vs upright freezer for breast milk

HealthLink BC gives expressed breast milk six to 12 months in a deep freeze held at -20°C. A stand-alone chest or upright can do that job if it holds that temperature. Danby lists its 14.5 cu ft chest as adjustable from -12 to -24°C. Amana lists its 16 cu ft upright down to -26.3°C. A freezer thermometer tells you where yours actually sits. For questions about feeding your baby, a public health nurse or your doctor is the person to ask.

Frost-free vs manual defrost in chest and upright freezers

Every chest freezer I checked for this guide is manual defrost. Most uprights carried at Merit's two appliance stores are frost-free; six are manual defrost, four of them Danby Designer models.

How a manual defrost freezer works

Ice slowly builds on the walls, and every so often the freezer is emptied, unplugged and left to melt. The Frigidaire and Danby chests have a drain for the water. NRCan's advice is to check the owner's manual for how often. In return, the freezer runs on less power.

How a frost-free freezer works

A frost-free freezer clears its own frost on a timed cycle, so there's no defrosting day. The price is electricity: the 16 cu ft Frigidaire upright is rated at 119 kWh a year more than the 14.8 cu ft chest beside it in the table.

For a bulk freezer opened a few times a week, I'd take manual defrost and the lower bill. For one opened every day for dinners, frost-free saves a chore that comes round more often.

Which freezer holds temperature longer in a power outage?

By Health Canada's figures, a full freezer of either kind keeps food frozen for about 48 hours with the door or lid shut. A half-full one manages about 24 hours. How full it is matters more than its shape. The chest's advantage shows if someone opens it during the outage, because a top-opening lid lets less cold air out.

Danby's 48-hour power outage protection on its chest freezers comes with conditions. The freezer is at least 75% full of frozen food, the lid stays shut, and the air around it is at 0°C or lower. A garage during a winter storm on the Island can meet that last one; a warm kitchen won't.

When the power comes back, HealthLink BC's rule is plain. Food that thawed and stayed above 4°C for more than 2 hours is thrown out, not refrozen. Health Canada asks for freezers at or below -18°C, and a thermometer inside shows where yours sat. It also advises against putting frozen food outside, even in winter.

Where a chest or upright freezer fits: floor space and garages

An upright freezer takes a little over half the floor of a chest of similar size. Worked from their listed width and depth, the Frigidaire chest needs about 9.9 sq ft of floor and the Frigidaire upright about 5.6 sq ft.

Measure Frigidaire 14.8 cu ft chest Frigidaire 16 cu ft upright
Width 49.4 in 27.75 in
Depth 28.9 in 29.13 in
Height 33.25 in, plus the lid swing 67.75 in
Floor area About 9.9 sq ft About 5.6 sq ft

The chest needs open air above it for the lid, and the upright needs room for its door to swing; the Frigidaire upright's door is reversible. NRCan asks for 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in.) between a freezer and the wall, so heat from the compressor can get away.

Garage ready is a maker's rating for the air temperature around the freezer. Frigidaire rates both these models to run as freezers in 0°F to 110°F, roughly -18 to 43°C, and Danby gives its garage-ready models the same range. The catch is the convertible setting, which lets the unit run as a refrigerator instead of a freezer. Frigidaire rates these units as refrigerators only from 38°F to 110°F, so below about 3°C a convertible in fridge mode is outside its rating. An unheated garage can get that cold on a winter night.

Not every freezer Merit lists says garage ready, so I'd check the listing before one goes in a carport or shed. Wine coolers are the opposite case: Silhouette's manuals keep them out of garages altogether, and I've laid out why a wine cooler stays out of the garage.

Who should skip a chest freezer, and who should skip an upright

A chest freezer is the wrong buy if bending into a deep box is hard for whoever does the cooking. Food at the bottom gets forgotten, and baskets only help so much. It also takes floor an upright doesn't, with clear space above for the lid.

An upright is the wrong buy for someone filling it with bulk meat for a year at the lowest running cost. It costs more to run, more cold air spills out when the door opens, and the frost-free ones use the most.

Which brand of freezer is the most reliable?

I can't point to independent Canadian reliability data on freezer brands, so I'd compare warranties. Danby, which also makes the Silhouette wine coolers we carry, gives 5 years parts and labour with in-home service on the Danby freezers above. Frigidaire's Canadian pages give 1 year parts and labour on its four. The Maytag 16 cu ft upright listing adds a 10-year limited parts warranty on the compressor.

Merit backs the maker's warranty, and SmartOne, our extended plan from Zucora, works on anything we sell. How a claim moves from the store to the maker is set out in its own guide.

Seeing chest and upright freezers at Campbell River or Port Alberni

I write from Duncan, but the freezers in this guide are carried at our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores. For anyone in the Cowichan Valley, the Port Alberni store is the shorter trip. I'd call first to ask which models are set up, and bring the width and depth of the spot the freezer is going into.

The Port Alberni store is at 2935 Third Ave, and the Campbell River store is at 1300 A Homewood Rd.

Special-order freezers, the ones with no store on their listing, are ordered by calling (250) 746-5527. Appliance delivery terms at Campbell River and Port Alberni are still being confirmed, so it's worth asking the store when you call.

To ask about a freezer, ring Port Alberni at (250) 724-6644 or Campbell River at (250) 286-0868.

The full ranges are in our chest freezer listings and the upright freezers on our site, and the rest of Merit's appliance writing sits together on one page.
