A Tempur-Pedic mattress is a bed built from TEMPUR Material, the maker's own dense foam that softens with body heat and moulds slowly to whoever lies on it. Merit Home Furniture still lists five Tempur-Pedic mattresses from the Align series, and our Campbell River store is the one that carries them.
Campbell River prices all five itself, and a call there at (250) 286-0868 gets our best price on the size and feel wanted. Our Duncan store's mattresses are Restwell and Restonic, set out in our Restwell listings and our Restonic listings.
So are they good? They are very good at easing pressure points and at keeping a partner's movement on their own side. They also sleep warmer and respond slower than a coil bed, they need a solid base under them, and the cost is real.
Are Tempur-Pedic mattresses really good?
Tempur-Pedic mattresses are built around two jobs: relieving pressure and absorbing motion. Tempur-Pedic Canada says its material "immediately and precisely adapts to your weight, shape, and temperature," and that body heat softens it as the night goes on.
The maker also surveyed its own buyers. In its 2023 Brand Owner Satisfaction Study, 85% of owners said they sleep better on their Tempur-Pedic than on their last mattress. That is a company asking its own customers, so weigh the figure accordingly.
A light sleeper beside a restless partner tends to suit one, as does someone with sore hips or shoulders who wants a slow, even hold. The poor fits are a hot sleeper, a person who shifts position all night, and anyone who loves the lift of springs. For a sleeper caught between those, Tempur-Pedic makes a ProAlign Hybrid with coils under the foam, though it is not among the beds we list.
How TEMPUR Material differs from ordinary memory foam
TEMPUR Material differs from commodity memory foam, Tempur-Pedic says, on feel and on temperature. Some memory foam "sinks where your weight rests, making it difficult to turn over," and some will "harden uncomfortably in cooler temperatures." The maker says its own material avoids both.
Smell is the other difference it claims. Tempur-Pedic lets its mattresses "rest" to release production odours before delivery, and says TEMPUR Material is CertiPUR-US certified. Any slight odour that is left, it adds, "will dissipate in a week or two."
The origin story comes in two versions. Tempur-Pedic Canada says the material was "originally created by Nasa to cushion pilots during test flights," then refined for sleep. NASA's own Spinoff account dates temper foam to 1966, developed to absorb shock in airplane seats.
NASA also notes that the rights to temper foam have been shared amongst various manufacturers. TEMPUR Material is one company's version, which Tempur-Pedic calls proprietary. Its label for the mattresses it sells here reads "Assembled in Canada," with "domestic & non-domestic components."
The Tempur-Pedic mattresses we still list, and how to get a price
These five come from Merit's live listings, read October 16, 2026. Each lists Campbell River as its store, and none lists Duncan.
| Mattress | Feel and build | Sizes listed |
|---|---|---|
| Align 10 Medium | Medium, 10 in, all TEMPUR foam | Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king |
| ProAlign 12 Medium | Medium, 12 in, adds TEMPUR-APR+ | Twin, twin XL, double, queen, king |
| ProAlign 12 Soft | Soft, 12 in, adds TEMPUR-APR+ | Twin, twin XL, double, queen, king |
| LuxeAlign 13 Firm | Firm, 13 in, 5-zone support layer | Twin XL, queen, king |
| LuxeAlign 13 Soft | Soft, 13 in, 5-zone support layer | Twin XL, queen, king |
When calling Campbell River for our best price, it helps to name the model, the size and the base planned, since a Tempur-Pedic needs a solid one. The store can also say which of the five it has set up to lie on that week.
Tempur-Pedic describes the series in three steps. The Align uses its responsive TEMPUR Material. The ProAlign adds TEMPUR-APR+, which the maker says gives "up to 20% more pressure relief" than its regular TEMPUR Material.
The LuxeAlign adds a 5-zone Ergonomic Support Layer, with a larger zone under the core and smaller ones at the hips and shoulders. Tempur-Pedic's hybrid model, which we no longer list, sets coils beneath the foam. Its page gives the coil count as "over 1,300" in one panel and "1000+" in another, so 1,000 is the safe figure.
How firm is a Tempur-Pedic mattress?
A Tempur-Pedic mattress in the Align series comes in four feels: soft, medium, medium hybrid and firm. The maker says every model gives proper support, and that choosing among them "is a personal comfort preference." Softer models let you sink further before the support layer cradles you.
Tempur-Pedic's own rule of thumb by position is simple. Back sleepers lean toward a firmer model, while side and stomach sleepers lean toward medium or soft. On our listings that points a back sleeper to the LuxeAlign 13 Firm, and a side sleeper to the ProAlign 12 Soft or LuxeAlign 13 Soft.
Firmness on TEMPUR Material also shifts with the room. Tempur-Pedic says a very cold room makes the mattress feel slightly firmer and less responsive, and a hot room makes it softer. Humid air can make it seem a little softer too.
That counts in a cool Island bedroom in winter. A bed tried in a heated store can feel firmer at home for the first few minutes, until body heat does its work.
What are the disadvantages of a Tempur-Pedic mattress?
The disadvantages of a Tempur-Pedic mattress are mostly the other side of its strengths. Where the maker or NASA has put a drawback in writing, these use their words.
- Heat. Tempur-Pedic says sleeping warm "is not an issue for most of our customers." Its own article on memory foam also says such a mattress "can often mean sleeping hot," which is why it builds a separate Breeze line. None of the five we list is a Breeze model.
- Slow response. NASA's account says the foam was first called "slow spring back foam." Turning over takes a moment longer than on springs, which a restless sleeper notices most.
- The base. Tempur-Pedic lists a box spring and the bare floor as incompatible. Slats can work if they are structurally sound, about 3 inches wide, with gaps of no more than 4 inches.
- Extra heat. The maker advises against electric blankets and heating pads, warning that longer exposure "may damage the mattress."
Why does my back hurt after sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic bed?
Back soreness in the first nights on a new Tempur-Pedic can come from the change itself. Tempur-Pedic says new owners go through a break-in period that "lasts for a couple of weeks" while the material's cells fully open.
A second cause can be what sits underneath. The maker says sagging usually means the mattress is not on "a flat, solid surface," which is the job its flat foundations are built for.
Pain that lasts beyond those weeks is worth raising with your doctor first. For chronic low-back pain, a 2003 randomised trial in The Lancet followed 313 adults for 90 days, and those given medium-firm mattresses improved more than those on firm ones.
If your doctor rules out other causes and the feel is simply wrong, raise it with us early. Merit encourages exchanges on a mattress that is wrong for you up to 30 days, case by case.
What the Tempur-Pedic warranty covers, and how long the mattress lasts
The Tempur-Pedic warranty on a mattress or flat foundation runs 10 years. The Canadian warranty page calls it a "10 Year Full Replacement Warranty," while the warranty document itself says "10-year Limited Warranty," and our listings say limited too.
That document covers a visible indentation greater than 0.75 of an inch, splits or cracks in the TEMPUR Material, and zipper defects in the cover. Body impressions under 0.75 in (1.9 cm) are excluded.
Comfort preference, a normal increase in softness and stains are excluded as well. The document prints, in capitals, "STAINS VOID THE WARRANTY. INVEST IN A MATTRESS PROTECTOR." Our mattress protector listings give the depth each one fits, so check it against the height of the TEMPUR bed.
Three smaller terms are worth knowing. The owner pays transportation costs on a repair or replacement, and a replacement carries no new warranty. The frame needs a centre support, with at least 5 to 6 legs for a queen or king.
If a claim comes up, Merit stands behind the Tempur-Pedic warranty, orders the parts and does the repairs. On lifespan, Tempur-Pedic gives no figure past the warranty term. It says its material "springs back to its usual shape time after time" and that its mattresses never need flipping or rotating.
The wider signs that any bed is done are in our guide to when a mattress wears out.
Tempur-Pedic foundations and power bases we list
A Tempur-Pedic needs a solid surface, and the maker lists its flat foundations and power bases as compatible. These are the ones on our listings, and the store that lists each.
| Item | What our listing says | Store |
|---|---|---|
| Flat foundation, 5 in | Solid, nail-free panel; 10-year limited | Campbell River, queen only |
| Flat foundation, 9 in | Same panel at box spring height | Campbell River, queen only |
| Midnight Blue foundation, 9 in | Twin, twin XL, double, split queen | Campbell River |
| Reflexion Arc | 850 lb lift, 2-zone massage, legs 3, 6 or 9 in | Campbell River, all sizes |
| Reflexion Boost | 650 lb lift, no massage | Campbell River, all sizes |
Campbell River quotes the three flat foundations and both Reflexion bases by phone, along with the mattress.
Raising the head or feet on a power base is covered at more length in our comparison of power bases.
Tempur-Pedic pillows have come off our pages. For anyone who owns one, Tempur-Pedic says a new pillow often feels firmer at first, with a break-in of a couple of weeks, and its pillow warranties run 3 to 5 years. Loft by sleep position, and the pillows we do list, are set out in how to match a pillow to how you sleep.
Can you try a Tempur-Pedic before you buy, and what is the return policy?
Trying a Tempur-Pedic in person is the maker's own advice. Tempur-Pedic Canada says getting a feel for TEMPUR Material means visiting a retail store that carries it, and it recommends trying mattresses in person.
Which Tempur-Pedic beds our Campbell River store has set up to lie on can change, so a call before the drive saves a wasted trip. Lie on each in your usual sleep position, long enough to roll over a few times, and bring whoever shares the bed.
The return policy that applies is Merit Home Furniture's own, since Tempur-Pedic's warranty does not cover a feel you simply do not like. When Campbell River orders a Tempur-Pedic in for you, it takes a 24% deposit, and the bed is usually ready there for pickup or delivery in 2 to 3 weeks.
