My spring cleaning checklist works room by room and puts the jobs weekly cleaning skips at the top: under the bed, behind the fridge and inside the dryer vent. I write from Merit Home Furniture in Duncan, so this one leans on what a furniture store knows. That's the mattress, the pillows, the upholstery and the appliances, each with its maker's own rules.
A spring cleaning checklist is a list of the once-a-year jobs in each room, done in an order that keeps dust falling onto floors not yet cleaned. On Vancouver Island it also means drying out after a wet winter. The bedroom and the depot run get sections of their own, since that's where Merit can add the most. When an old piece goes to the depot, buying furniture to replace it is the next job.
When should spring cleaning start on Vancouver Island?
Spring cleaning on the Island goes easiest on the first run of dry days, once the windows can stay open for an afternoon. Health Canada's mould page suggests opening windows in dry weather to ventilate a home. There's no fixed date: some years that's early March in Duncan, some years well into April.
- Sort the cleaning cupboard first. Old products go in a box for the recycling centre, and bleach gets a shelf of its own.
- Declutter as you go. One bag for donation and one for the depot sit by the door.
- Work top to bottom. Ceiling fans and the tops of tall dressers come before baseboards and floors.
- Finish one room before starting the next. A half-done house is harder to live in than a dusty one.
Spring cleaning house checklist, room by room
This spring cleaning house checklist covers the shared rooms, and each table prints on a page if a paper copy helps. Merit keeps the kitchen's daily and weekly jobs on a list of their own.
| Living and dining room | How |
|---|---|
| Sofa and chairs | Lift the cushions, vacuum the deck and seams, then read the cleaning code on the tag. |
| Wood tables and chairs | Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry right away. |
| Light fixtures and fans | Dust before the floors, never after. |
| Windows and tracks | Vacuum the tracks, then wash the glass on a dry day. |
| Behind furniture | Pull pieces out, vacuum, and look at the wall for damp. |
| Kitchen | How |
|---|---|
| Fridge | Toss anything past its date and brush the coils as the manual shows. |
| Range hood | Wash or replace the grease filter the way its manual describes. |
| Dishwasher | Take out and rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub. |
| Cupboards | Empty, wipe the shelves and check under the sink for leaks. |
| Bathroom | How |
|---|---|
| Exhaust fan | Vacuum the grille and check that it still pulls air. |
| Grout and caulking | Look for black spots and gaps where water gets in. |
| Cabinet | Sort out expired products and old toiletries. |
| Laundry room | How |
|---|---|
| Dryer lint screen | Clean it, then do it after every load. |
| Dryer vent | Clear lint from the duct and check the outdoor flap opens while the dryer runs. |
| Washer | Run the maker's cleaning cycle and wipe the door seal. |
The City of Toronto's fire safety page names a lack of dryer maintenance as a leading cause of home dryer fires. It asks for the lint screen to be cleaned after each load. In the entry and closets, the mat gets a shake outside, winter coats get washed and stored, and the smoke alarms get tested.
Bedroom spring cleaning checklist for better sleep
A bedroom spring cleaning checklist starts with the mattress, the biggest thing in the room that never goes in a washer. It gets turned the way its maker says, and the protector and pillowcases go in the wash. Restwell, Restonic and Natura are our Duncan mattress brands, with 20 of their mattresses listed for our Duncan store. Restwell and Restonic, the two main lines, both put their turning steps in writing.
Turning a Restwell mattress at spring cleaning
Restwell's warranty brochure says a Never Turn mattress is rotated head to toe every 2 weeks for the first 3 months, then once a month. A two-sided Restwell is also flipped. Restwell makes this the owner's job under its warranty and asks for a second person to help.
Turning a Restonic mattress at spring cleaning
Restonic's FAQ, on its US site, leaves rotating or flipping to the retailer's instructions for the model. Either way it's done monthly for the first 6 months, then quarterly for the rest of the year.
Several beds on our Duncan list carry their comfort layers on top, like the tight top on the Restwell Canary and the Euro top on the Restonic Minto. The care card says whether a model flips, and it outranks this page. How many years each type of mattress gives is covered in its own guide.
HealthLink BC, writing on dust mites, says to wash bedding, pillowcases and mattress covers in hot water every week, and notes that mites thrive above 50% humidity. If allergies or asthma are behind the cleaning, a doctor can say which steps matter most. For the protector, Health Guard suggests a wash every 2 months, sooner after a spill. Keeping a protector's waterproof layer intact in the wash has a guide too.
Can you wash pillows in a spring clean?
Whether a pillow can be washed depends on its label. Health Guard's page for its Hotel Comfort pillow says it can't be washed or dried at all. Toronto's fire safety page lists foam pillows among things never to put in a dryer. A flat or lumpy pillow is better replaced, and matching a pillow to the way you sleep helps there.
Here are four of the Health Guard protectors listed for our Duncan store, with prices read November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes, smallest size to largest.
| Protector | Price range |
|---|---|
| Health Guard Premium Terry | $49 to $79 |
| Health Guard Cotton Touch | $89 to $129 |
| Health Guard Tencel Dream | $109 to $149 |
| Health Guard Cool Ice | $189 to $249 |
The rest sit in our protector collection and the pillow collection. Merit doesn't mail small items: they're picked up free at the Duncan store or added to a furniture or mattress delivery.
With one hour for the bedroom, I'd spend it on the mattress label and care card. They say whether the bed should ever be flipped. Then I'd put the next rotation on the calendar, since both makers ask for it most often in the first months. While it's lifted, I'd also check the base underneath against the support the warranty asks for, which settles whether the bed needs a box spring.
Upholstery cleaning codes on a spring cleaning home checklist
Upholstery cleaning codes are the letters on a sofa's tag that say which cleaners the fabric can take. On a spring cleaning home checklist, that tag gets read before any soapy water goes near the sofa. La-Z-Boy's care page recommends frequent vacuuming or light brushing with a stiff nonmetallic brush, and a professional cleaner once a piece is soiled all over.
| Code | What La-Z-Boy's care page allows |
|---|---|
| W | Spot clean only with a water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner. No solvents, no steam cleaning. |
| S | Spot clean only with a water-free dry cleaning solvent. No water. |
| W-S | Neutral soap and water for water-based stains, and a solvent cleaner for heavier oil-based ones, tested out of sight first. |
| X | No foam or liquid cleaner of any type. Vacuum or brush lightly. |
The page also says cushion covers shouldn't come off to be laundered or dry cleaned, and that stains are worked from the outside in so no ring forms.
Other makers print their own codes, so the tag on your piece decides. What each maker allows on leather on the coast covers the other kind of cover.
Natural cleaning solutions, and the mix Health Canada warns against
Natural cleaning solutions cover most of a spring clean. The Cowichan Valley Regional District's hazardous waste page calls vinegar and baking soda excellent natural alternatives to chemical cleaners. Dish soap and warm water are often enough for hard surfaces.
The rule that matters more than any recipe: never mix bleach with another cleaner. Health Canada's advisory says bleach reacts with any product containing ammonia or an acid, and it names vinegar as one of those acids. The mix gives off toxic gases such as chloramine. Canadian Poison Centres had more than double the chloramine reports in October and November 2020 compared with those months in 2019, Health Canada says. If someone may have been harmed, call a poison centre or a health care provider right away.
Cleaning mould and damp after a wet Island winter
Mould turns up in spring on cold outside walls, behind dressers pushed tight against them and around bathroom windows. Health Canada's mould page counts one to three patches, each under 1 square metre (10 square feet), as small enough for a homeowner to clean. It says to use water and dish detergent, with no need for bleach. Susceptible people stay out of the room, and for extensive growth the page suggests professional help.
The same page suggests indoor humidity between 30% and 50%, with a dehumidifier if needed. What damp air does to solid wood furniture is worth a read if a piece spent the winter against a cold wall.
Where spring cleaning leftovers go in the Cowichan Valley, the CRD and the RDN
Spring cleaning leftovers have set places to go on the Island, and the rules change at each regional district line. These figures come from each district's own pages, read November 1, 2026, and fees change, so check before loading the car.
| Item | CVRD recycling centres |
|---|---|
| Household hazardous waste | Free for many everyday items; liquids in the original, labelled container |
| Mattresses and box springs | $32 per unit, plus a surcharge for soiled ones |
| Couches and armchairs | $825 per tonne, about $50 to $63 a couch |
| Large appliances, fridges and freezers | Free; fridges and freezers clean and empty |
Bings Creek Recycling Centre on Drinkwater Road in Duncan is open every day except statutory holidays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The CVRD also runs Peerless Road near Ladysmith and Meade Creek near Lake Cowichan on shorter hours. In the Capital Regional District, the Hartland Public Drop-off Depot takes household hazardous waste from residents at no charge. The Regional District of Nanaimo takes it by emailed appointment only, at $10 for up to 25 kg.
A new piece can also take the old one away. From Merit's Duncan store, delivery across the Island is $150 with assembly, and old furniture can go at delivery, usually $25 to $50 a piece and sometimes included.
How can I keep the house clean all year after spring cleaning?
Keeping the house clean all year comes down to habits tied to the calendar. That means the lint screen with every load, bedding weekly, the protector every couple of months and the mattress on its maker's schedule. A smaller fall pass catches the furnace filter before the rain returns.
Where a spring cleaning checklist can do harm
- Mixing bleach with vinegar, ammonia glass cleaner or toilet bowl cleaner. Health Canada says the gases can be deadly.
- Steam cleaning a W-code sofa or wetting an S-code one, both advised against on La-Z-Boy's page.
- Flipping a mattress built to be rotated only, against its care card and warranty.
- Washing a no-wash pillow, or drying a foam one.
- Scrubbing extensive mould yourself, which Health Canada's page suggests handing to a professional.
- Pouring old cleaners into the garbage tote. The CVRD bans household hazardous waste from curbside totes.
