Queen mattress dimensions: 60 by 80 inches, in feet and centimetres, with the frame, room and stairs it needs

Queen mattress on a bed - Merit Home Furniture

A queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. In feet that is 5 feet by 6 feet 8 inches, and in centimetres 152.4 by 203.2. Makers often build it half an inch short: Sealy Canada lists its queen at 60 x 79.5 inches.

The size is the same across Canada and the United States, so a queen from any maker fits a queen frame from any other. What changes from one queen to the next is the thickness, the frame around it and the bedding on top. Those three decide whether it suits your room, and they take up most of this guide.

Merit Home Furniture lists 54 queen mattresses across its stores. The 14 listed for our Duncan store are Restwell and Restonic beds, and each one shows its queen price online. For every size side by side, the Canadian mattress size chart has the full set. Here it is the queen alone, measured from the mattress out to the bedroom walls.

What are the dimensions of a queen size mattress in feet, inches and centimetres?

Queen size dimensions come out the same in every unit, rounded only where metric forces it. The table also carries the two figures most charts skip: the diagonal and the width each sleeper gets.

Queen mattress on a bed - Merit Home Furniture
Measure Queen
Inches 60 x 80
Feet 5 ft x 6 ft 8 in
Centimetres 152.4 x 203.2
As some makers build it 60 x 79.5 in (Sealy Canada, Serta); 60 x 79 in (Restwell spec sheets)
Maker tolerance plus or minus 1/2 inch (Serta)
Sleeping area 4,800 sq in, about 33.3 sq ft or 3.1 square metres
Corner to corner 100 inches
Width per sleeper, two adults 30 inches

The Better Sleep Council, which the mattress industry sponsors, puts the trade-off plainly. Two adults on a queen get 30 inches each, which is 8 inches less than either would have alone in a twin. That 30 inches is the reason a queen suits one adult who spreads out, or a couple who sleep close.

The 100-inch diagonal matters on moving day. A queen tipped on its side has to turn at the top of the stairs. The diagonal is the length that has to clear that corner.

Is a queen mattress the same size in Canada and the US?

Yes. The queen is 60 by 80 on both sides of the border, and neither country uses a metric queen. Beds sold in Europe or the United Kingdom are built to metric sizes instead. Sheets or frames labelled for those markets will not match a Canadian queen.

How thick is a queen mattress? Heights on our listings

Queen mattress thickness is not part of the size, and it varies more than anything else about a queen. Of the 14 queen mattresses on our Duncan listings, 13 state a height in the maker's text. They run from 12 inches to 16 inches, and 7 of those 13 are 13 inches or less.

Height Duncan queens One example
12 to 12.5 in 5 Restwell Canary, 12 in, $899.00
13 in 2 Restwell Starling, 13 in, $1,449.00
15 to 16 in 6 Restwell Sparrow Elite, 15 1/2 in, $2,199.00
Height not listed 1 Restwell Copper Hybrid, $2,499.00

Prices are the queen price on each listing, before applicable taxes. A thicker queen does three things to a bedroom. It raises the top of the bed, it needs fitted sheets with a deeper pocket, and it adds weight on the stairs.

Restwell Sparrow Elite pillow top mattress seen from the side - Merit Home Furniture

The foundation underneath sets the rest of the height. Our Duncan store has no box spring or flat foundation from Restwell or Restonic to offer under a queen. What Merit lists there instead are Restwell's adjustable bases.

The Restwell Peak Adjustable Base is $1,249.00 in queen, and its listing gives legs of 1, 3 or 6 inches. It gives no deck height, so ask us before ordering if the top of the bed matters.

Box springs from other makers sit with our other stores and show no price online. Campbell River carries the Sealy 5-inch low profile foundation and the Tempur-Pedic 5-inch flat foundation. The Beautyrest Traditional 9-inch foundation, 59.5 by 79 inches, is at Campbell River and Port Alberni, where a call gets our best price.

Sealy Canada says its low profile box spring cuts the height of the box spring by up to 4.5 inches. Under a 16-inch queen, that is the difference between a bed that sits like a chair and one that needs a little hop.

Queen bed frame dimensions: the outside measurement the room holds

A queen bed frame always measures more than 60 by 80, because the headboard, footboard and side rails wrap around the mattress. That outside measurement is the one to tape out on the bedroom floor. We read the spec tables on Merit's own queen beds this week, and the outside measurements of other frame sizes follow the same pattern.

Mako Oxford solid wood panel bed - Merit Home Furniture
Piece Size Price, queen
Mako queen beds on our Duncan listings 63 to 67 in wide, 81 to 88 in long (30 of 35 beds) Varies
Middle of that range 64 x 85 in
Mako Oxford panel bed 63 W x 84 D x 54 H in $1,099.00
Mako Claudette platform bed 64 W x 84 D x 39 H in $949.00

So most queen frames from Mako add 3 to 7 inches of width and 1 to 8 inches of length to the mattress. Storage beds add more again, because their drawers have to pull out. Mako's storage beds have two drawers on each side, so the walkway beside the bed doubles as drawer space.

Sealy Canada asks that a queen or king set sit on a frame with the extra centre support needed to prevent bowing and sagging. Every bed in the Mako table comes with its own rails and slats. An older metal frame without a centre leg is worth checking before a new queen goes on it.

An adjustable base can stand on its own legs or sit inside a queen bed frame. The Restwell listings give no outside size for their bases, so call before ordering if the frame is tight. Whether a given frame can take one depends on its rail design, which the guide to which frames take a power base works through.

How much space do I need for a queen bed?

A queen bed needs the frame plus somewhere to walk. Using the 64 by 85 inch frame from the middle of our Mako range, the arithmetic below allows a 24-inch path where there is one. Change the path to suit the people using the room.

Layout Floor space
Path on both sides and at the foot 112 x 109 in, about 9 ft 4 in x 9 ft 1 in
One side against a wall 88 x 109 in, about 7 ft 4 in x 9 ft 1 in
Headboard wall with two 22-inch nightstands 108 in, or 9 ft
Wheelchair layout, CMHC and CSA B652 1,800 mm on one side and the foot, 1,200 mm on the other

The 22-inch nightstand is the median width of the 32 nightstands on Merit's Duncan listings that state a width. A wider nightstand pushes the headboard wall out by the difference on each side.

The wheelchair row comes from the universal design table CMHC uses for its housing programs, which points to the CSA B652 standard. Those clearances leave room to turn a chair beside the bed. CMHC's own worked example for a queen bed in this table calls for a room about 14 ft 7 in wide and 15 ft 2 in long.

Can a queen mattress fit in a smaller room?

Yes, a queen fits a smaller room if one long side goes against a wall. The 7 ft 4 in width above is about the narrowest layout that still leaves a path down one side. The cost is that one sleeper climbs out over the other, and making the bed means pulling it out from the wall.

A low platform bed or a frame without a footboard also saves a few inches of length. The Mako Claudette platform bed, at 84 inches long, is 3 inches shorter than the 87-inch Sophia panel bed.

Getting a queen through the door and up the stairs

Queen mattress dimensions matter twice: once in the bedroom and once on the way there. Sealy Canada says two people should carry a mattress flat on its side, and not bend it beyond 25 degrees. A queen on its side is 60 inches tall, so it goes through a doorway standing up, with its thickness as the width.

The foundation is the harder piece, because it does not bend at all. Tempur-Pedic ships its queen flat foundation as one piece, 60 by 80. Its split queen is two pieces, each 30 by 80, made to turn tight stairwells. Tempur-Pedic lists its 9-inch high profile queen at 70 lb, and the split queen at 82 lb, or 41 lb a half.

Restwell and Restonic list no split queen foundation for Duncan, so ask how a queen base arrives before booking. Our Campbell River store carries a Tempur-Pedic 9-inch flat foundation listed in split queen. Where the top of the stairs has a tight turn, that split is worth asking about.

From Duncan, delivery is $150 across the Island, assembly included. A Gulf Islands delivery is possible for some islands; ask the Duncan store about yours. A mattress going across the Island may need a different shipping method, so ask when booking. Pickup at Duncan is free.

Mattresses take 2 to 3 weeks to arrive, ready for pickup or delivery. These are the Duncan store's terms; the other stores set their own, so ask the store you are buying from.

Uncommon queen sizes: split, short and RV queens

Uncommon mattress sizes in the queen family are built for one job each, and each needs its own sheets or frame. None of the 14 queens Merit lists for Duncan is a short or RV size.

Size Measurement Where it fits
Split queen foundation Two pieces, each 30 x 80 in (Tempur-Pedic) Under a regular queen mattress, where stairs are tight
Short or RV queen 60 x 74.5 in Campers, trailers and boats
Queen adjustable base No outside size on the Restwell listings; ask us Inside a queen frame that takes one

The short queen is 5.5 inches shorter than a home queen. A Canadian size chart from TMASC gives the RV queen as 60 by 74.5, and says RV mattresses are typically that size. On a home queen frame a short queen leaves a gap at the foot, so it belongs in the camper. No RV mattress is listed on our site at the moment, so measuring the camper's platform comes first.

Queen bedding: sheets, protectors and duvets that fit

Queen bedding is cut for the 60 by 80 top, but the fitted sheet also has to wrap the sides. To find the right bedding for your mattress, measure the height with the protector and any topper on, then pick a pocket at least that deep.

A 16-inch Euro top with a protector can outgrow a sheet labelled "deep pocket". Health Guard lists its bamboo cotton sheet set for mattresses up to 18 inches deep. Sealy Canada's own sheets, by its account, stretch over mattresses up to 21 inches deep.

A protector goes on before the sheet. On Merit's Duncan listings, the seven Health Guard queen protectors run from $69.00 to $249.00. The Health Guard Bamboo Plus protector is $69.00 in queen and is waterproof and breathable. The pillows and bedding listings hold the duvets, pillows and sheets.

Pillows, bedding and protectors come out on the same truck as the mattress. They can also be picked up free in Duncan, usually about 2 business days after they arrive.

Which bed size is best for me: double, queen or king?

Choosing between a double, queen and king mostly comes down to the width each person gets and the wall it takes. The queen sits in the middle on both.

Size Mattress Per sleeper, two adults
Double 53 or 54 x 75 in 26.5 to 27 in
Queen 60 x 80 in 30 in
King 76 x 80 in 38 in

A queen is 5 inches longer than a double, which matters for anyone near six feet whose feet reach the end. A king keeps the queen's 80-inch length and adds 16 inches of width, about one nightstand's worth of wall. The full trade is set out in choosing between a queen and a king, and the king size measurements, frames included, sit in a guide of their own.

Which mattress fits you best within the queen size is a separate question, about firmness and construction rather than inches. The mattress guides page collects those, by sleep position and by maker.

Queen mattress prices on our listings

Queen mattress prices on Merit's Duncan listings run from $899.00 to $2,599.00 before applicable taxes, across all 14. The Restwell Canary is the $899.00 one. The 8 Restwell queens top out at $2,499.00, and the 6 Restonic queens start at $1,049.00.

The other 40 queens on our site, from makers such as Sealy, Beautyrest and Tempur-Pedic, belong to our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores. The store that carries the bed quotes our best price on it by phone. The queen mattress listings can be sorted by price, and the mattresses and sleep listings hold every size.

A queen frame is a separate purchase, priced on each bed's own listing. The bed listings give outside measurements wherever the maker supplies them.

Where queen measurements trip people up

Measuring the mattress instead of the frame. The room holds the frame, which on our Mako beds is 3 to 7 inches wider than the mattress. Taping the outside size on the floor before ordering settles it.

Keeping old sheets for a new, thicker queen. Going from a 9-inch mattress to a 15-inch pillow top can leave a fitted sheet that pops off the corners. The new height, measured with the protector on, sets the pocket depth.

A short queen on a home frame. An RV queen is 74.5 inches long, and it will not fill a standard queen frame. The length on the listing tells the two apart.

A one-piece foundation on a tight staircase. A queen foundation is 60 by 80 and does not flex. If the stair turn is tight, a split queen is easier to carry.

A queen for two people who sleep apart. If either sleeper needs more than 30 inches, a firmer or softer queen will not fix it. That couple is usually better served by a king, room permitting.

Lying on a queen before buying one on the Island

A queen is easiest to judge lying down, next to a double and a king. Sealy suggests spending about 15 minutes on each mattress. Merit's Duncan store at 107 Ingram St is open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5. Its queens are Restwell and Restonic, and the ones on display change, so a call first tells you which are set up.

Bring the room size, the width of the bedroom door and a photo of the top of the stairs. With those, we can work out the frame and foundation before the mattress is ordered. Campbell River and Port Alberni set their own delivery terms, so ask that store directly.
