Motion isolation mattress for couples: what keeps a partner's movement on their side, and the beds we list on the Island

Restonic Revive Reflections hybrid mattress - Merit Home Furniture

For a light sleeper beside a restless partner, I'd pick a motion isolation mattress with pocket coils under a thick foam or latex top. I'd try it lying side by side, too. If you also disagree on firmness, a split mattress or a split king settles both questions.

A motion isolation mattress is one that keeps movement on the side of the bed where it starts. One partner can roll over or get up without the other feeling much of it. Pocketed coils do part of that work by moving one at a time, and a comfort layer of memory foam or latex soaks up the rest. For the most separation, a couple can sleep on two mattresses side by side, which is what a split king is.

Merit Home Furniture lists 20 mattresses for our Duncan store on Vancouver Island, all from Restwell, Restonic and Natura. In their listings, 18 of the 20 name pocketed or individually wrapped coils. The Natura Majestic has no springs, only latex, and the Restwell Copper Hybrid's listing says coils without saying which kind.

What is motion isolation in a mattress, and why does it matter for couples?

Motion isolation is how little of one sleeper's movement reaches the other side of the mattress. Arthritis Society Canada describes the opposite, motion transfer, as a restless sleeper's movement jostling the person beside them. It says that can disturb sleep and, with arthritis, cause pain. Its advice is a mattress designed to limit transfer with individual coils or memory foam.

How much a partner's movement harms sleep is less settled than mattress ads suggest. A 2020 study in Frontiers in Psychiatry put 12 couples through four nights in a sleep lab. Sharing a bed, the partners had about 10% more REM sleep than sleeping alone, and their sleep stages lined up more closely. They also had more leg movements. The couples were young and healthy, so the study says little about an older pair where one snores or has a sore hip. Poor sleep that lasts for weeks is one for your doctor before shopping for a new mattress.

Which mattress types isolate motion: pocket coil, memory foam, latex and innerspring

Mattress types differ in motion isolation because of how their parts are joined. Each pocketed coil is wrapped in its own fabric sleeve, which in Sleep Foundation's words lets each one respond to movement without transferring motion to the coils around it.

Build What happens to a partner's movement
Bonnell coils Springs linked by wire; Sleep Foundation names noise and motion transfer as drawbacks
Continuous wire coils One length of wire throughout; Sleep Foundation says they may still pass some movement
Pocketed coils Each coil moves on its own; the support in 18 of our 20 Duncan listings
Memory foam Usually absorbs movement well, per Sleep Foundation's couples guide
Latex Quick to push back, with less hug than memory foam and more bounce
Hybrid Pocketed coils under foam or latex: the coils keep the sides apart, the top damps what gets through

Latex sits between foam and coils. Our Natura Majestic listing says latex springs back faster than foam. Sleep Foundation suggests latex for partners who want pressure relief without foam's hugging feel, and warns it is expensive, heavy and tough to move. The heat, edges and price of each type are laid out in our side-by-side of foam, latex, coil and hybrid builds.

Does mattress thickness affect motion transfer?

I haven't found a source that ties total height alone to motion transfer. The comfort layer is what shows up. In Sleep Foundation's hands-on tests of a flippable mattress, the softer side, with more foam padding, isolated motion better than the firmer side. So a tall euro top may absorb more than a thin tight top, but the layers inside decide it, not the tape measure.

Motion isolation mattresses listed for our Duncan store, and how each is built

Each bed below is listed for Merit's Duncan store and pairs coils that move one at a time, or solid latex, with a foam or latex top. Prices are for a queen, before applicable taxes, as listed on November 1, 2026.

Mattress Build, queen price
Restwell Robin Plush euro top; zoned gel memory foam over a 1,200-count 5-zone pocket coil; $899.00
Restonic Notte Medium euro top; copper memory foam and nano coils over 1,188 zoned pocket coils; $1,688.00
Restonic Revive 100 Marissa Firm, plush or split; comfort foam over individually wrapped coils; $1,813.00
Natura Green Spring Serene Two 2-inch latex layers and wool over zoned wrapped coils; $2,549.00
Restonic Revive Reflections Firm, plush or split; gel memory foam over about 1,200 pocket coils; $2,587.00
Natura Majestic No springs; 4 in. of latex over a 6 in. latex core, wool on top; $3,849.00
Restonic Revive 100 Marissa pocket coil mattress in navy with cognac trim - Merit Home Furniture

Two of those Merit listings speak to couples. The Marissa's says an early riser's movement "mostly stays on their side". The Serene's says a partner turning over moves less of your side, because each coil is wrapped on its own. Those are our descriptions of each maker's build, not test results.

Merit's Campbell River store carries Tempur-Pedic's all-foam beds, among them the ProAlign 12 Medium and the LuxeAlign 13 Soft. Tempur-Pedic Canada says its TEMPUR material gives pressure relief and motion absorption. The wrapped coil Sealy Posturepedic Plus Jacob is carried there too. Port Alberni carries the Spring Air Grand Hybrid Aura Plush, a pocket coil hybrid. A call to the store that carries one gets our best price.

Best motion isolation mattress for couples who sleep differently: split feels, split kings and bases

A couple who disagree on firmness or bedtimes can split the bed in three ways. The first is one mattress with two feels. Four Restonic Revive models on Merit's Duncan listings offer a split version, firmer on one half and plush on the other, at the single-feel price. It's still one mattress, so it answers the firmness question first.

The second is a split king: two twin XL mattresses on one king frame. Arthritis Society Canada suggests two extra-long twins as a way to get a king-size bed without the motion. Tempur-Pedic Canada lists its split king as two twin XLs and marks it for couples. Ten Duncan listings show a twin XL, among them the six Restonic Comfort Care beds and both Natura beds. Sizes are on our Canadian mattress size chart, and whether two people need the width is weighed in queen against king for two sleepers.

The third puts a base under each half. The Restwell Pinnacle, listed for Duncan and Port Alberni, is $1,499.00 before applicable taxes in twin XL, and a split king takes two. Which mattresses and frames suit a powered base has its own guide.

Can an adjustable bed improve motion isolation for couples?

An adjustable bed helps motion isolation only when it's split. A queen or king base is one platform under one mattress, so movement crosses it much as it would on a flat bed. Two twin XL bases each carry their own mattress, so a partner's movement has far less to travel through.

Edge support with two in the bed

Edges matter more with two sleepers, since each lies nearer one side. Sleep Foundation's couples guide names edge support and motion isolation among the most important things for couples. Seven of the eight Restwell listings for Duncan name a foam-encased edge, and the Restonic listings describe foam around the coils.

Couples sleeping apart: sleep divorce, separate beds and different sleep styles

Some couples stop sharing a mattress altogether. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine commissioned a 2024 survey of 2,006 US adults. In it, 29% said they had moved to another bed or another space at home to accommodate a bed partner. In the academy's 2023 survey, 20% slept in another room now and then and 15% did so consistently. These are American figures; I haven't found a Canadian count.

The academy's spokesperson, Dr. Seema Khosla, framed a sleep divorce as dealing with sleep problems such as snoring, tossing and turning, and mismatched schedules. A mattress only helps with the tossing. For snoring, HealthLink BC suggests a bothered partner try earplugs or a machine that plays ambient music or natural sounds. It says to call your doctor if you or your bed partner snores loudly and heavily, or stops breathing, gasps or chokes during sleep.

Different body clocks may matter less than couples fear. In the Frontiers study, chronotype, lark or owl, didn't change the couples' REM sleep or how in step they slept. The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines ask adults for 7 to 9 hours of good-quality sleep, with consistent bed and wake-up times. When partners keep different hours, the late one climbing in is the movement the other feels, and two mattresses pushed together on one frame is the old middle ground.

How to test a motion isolation mattress in a showroom

Testing a mattress for motion isolation takes both of you, lying down, for a few minutes per bed. The glass of water on the mattress comes from advertising, and as a buying test it's closer to folklore. In 2018 the UK's Advertising Standards Authority ruled on a TV demonstration with wine glasses beside someone jumping on a memory foam bed and a coil spring bed. It found the comparison was not misleading. Still, I haven't found a study that uses a glass to measure what a sleeping partner feels.

  1. Lie down the way you sleep. Take your usual sides and positions, and settle before anyone moves.
  2. One of you rolls over twice. The other keeps their eyes shut and says when they feel it, and how much.
  3. Get out and back in. That's what wakes a partner on a different schedule, so do it as you would on an early morning.
  4. Swap roles. Each of you takes a turn lying still.
  5. Sit on the edge. If you dress sitting on the side, check that the edge holds without folding.
From the showroom floor

If one of you is the light sleeper, that's the verdict that counts on this test. I'd have the restless one move the way they really do at night, not politely, and pick the bed where the light sleeper barely notices. Firmness can be sorted with a split; movement is harder to fix once the bed is home.

Where a motion isolation mattress falls short for couples

A motion isolation mattress trades some ease of movement for its stillness. Sleep Foundation tested one bed in several feels and steered sleepers who value ease of movement to the firmer models. Those who put motion isolation first got the softer one. Latex is the costly route, and heavy on a narrow staircase in an older Island house.

Merit's listings don't say whether the split Revive versions isolate motion any better than the single feels. I'd treat the split as an answer to firmness, not movement. And no mattress stops snoring or an early alarm, while a split king's two halves still share one frame.
