To clean stainless steel appliances, I'd use warm water with a little dish soap and a soft microfibre cloth, wiping along the grain and drying it off. KitchenAid's own mix is a teaspoon of dish soap in a quart of water. Every maker I checked accepts that routine, and the three that set rules for coated finishes allow it there too. Past that, the makers don't agree.
Stainless steel is a steel that resists rust because of a thin chromium oxide film on its surface, as the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA) puts it. Many appliance doors add a protective coating on top to hide fingerprints, and that coating changes which cleaners are safe.
Merit Home Furniture lists 1,640 appliances for Vancouver Island homes, counted on November 1, 2026. Of those, 829 name stainless steel or a coated stainless finish in the title, and 217 carry a fingerprint-resistant coating under one of seven brand names. Every model priced further down is listed at our Campbell River or Port Alberni store. The sections that follow give what Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, LG, Samsung and Frigidaire tell owners, and what salt air and Island water add.
How to clean stainless steel appliances, step by step
Cleaning stainless steel appliances safely takes two microfibre cloths, dish soap and warm water. KitchenAid Canada's guide mixes one quart of water and a teaspoon of dish soap.
- Find the grain. Look for the fine lines brushed into the metal. KitchenAid wipes left to right on a horizontal grain and downward on a vertical one, because wiping across it may leave streaks and marks.
- Lift the loose dirt. Wipe along the grain with a cloth dampened in plain warm water.
- Wash with the soap mix. Wring the cloth out well and work along the grain. LG Canada and Samsung Canada both start with a mild detergent.
- Rinse. A second cloth with plain warm water takes the soap film off.
- Dry it completely. KitchenAid's method ends with drying the surface entirely, still along the grain.
- Polish plain stainless, if you like. A stainless cleaner or polish is an optional last step on uncoated steel only.
What can you use to clean stainless steel appliances?
The products you can use to clean stainless steel appliances start with mild soap and water, by the makers' own pages. A cleaner made for stainless steel comes next, on uncoated doors. Past that, the advice splits.
| Product | What the seven makers say |
|---|---|
| Dish soap and warm water | Accepted by all seven; KitchenAid, Frigidaire and Bosch name it for coated finishes too |
| Stainless cleaner or polish | Fine on plain steel for all seven; KitchenAid, Frigidaire and Bosch rule it out on coated finishes |
| Diluted vinegar | Whirlpool, Maytag and Frigidaire allow it; KitchenAid says to avoid it |
| Mineral oil | Whirlpool and Maytag mix it with vinegar; Bosch keeps its own conditioning oil off coated steel |
| Baking soda paste | Whirlpool and Maytag, for stains and discolouration |
| Bleach, chlorine or ammonia | Ruled out by Whirlpool, Maytag, Frigidaire and Bosch |
| Steel wool or scouring powder | Ruled out by KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag and LG |
| Paper towels | KitchenAid says no; Whirlpool and Maytag wipe vinegar off with a dry one |
Where two makers disagree, the manual for your model number settles it. Maytag's own guide says to check the owner's manual before choosing a cleaner.
Can you use vinegar on stainless steel appliances?
Vinegar on stainless steel appliances splits the makers, even inside one company. KitchenAid Canada lists vinegar among the things never to use. Whirlpool and Maytag, sold in Canada by the same company as KitchenAid, suggest diluted vinegar for stubborn stains, wiped off right away. Both also give a home mix of one part white vinegar to one part mineral oil.
Frigidaire allows a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water on its Smudge-Proof finish, then a clean-water rinse. Euro Inox, the European stainless steel association, suggests a 25% vinegar solution for limescale. I'd keep vinegar off a KitchenAid door, and use it diluted and briefly on others.
Can I use glass cleaner on stainless steel?
Glass cleaner on stainless steel depends on the finish. Euro Inox lists chloride-free glass sprays as suitable for mirror-polished stainless. KitchenAid says never to use window sprays on its fingerprint-resistant PrintShield finish. An appliance door with a visible grain isn't a mirror finish, so I'd leave the glass cleaner for the windows.
How to clean appliances in stainless steel with a fingerprint-resistant finish
Cleaning appliances in stainless steel with a fingerprint-resistant finish takes soap, water and a soft cloth, and nothing else. KitchenAid says its PrintShield finish can only be cleaned with warm water, mild soap and a microfibre cloth. Frigidaire says not to use appliance cleaner or stainless steel cleaner on Smudge-Proof. A Bosch dishwasher manual printed for the US and Canada says never to use stainless steel polish on anti-fingerprint or black stainless surfaces.
The coating goes by seven names in Merit's listing titles, counted on November 1, 2026.
| Name in the title | Listings | Maker |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerprint Resistant | 108 | Whirlpool, Samsung, Maytag, KitchenAid, LG, Frigidaire, Bosch |
| Smudge-Proof | 45 | Frigidaire |
| PrintShield | 36 | KitchenAid |
| PrintProof | 15 | LG |
| Anti-Fingerprint | 8 | Bosch |
| Smudge Resistant | 4 | LG |
| EZ Clean Steel | 1 | Samsung |
Some of these are carried at Merit's Campbell River or Port Alberni store. A few examples follow, with prices as listed on November 1, 2026, before applicable taxes. Appliance prices move with the makers' promotions.

Plain stainless shows prints most when it's new. Euro Inox notes that after a few weeks in the kitchen, fingerprints show up less than on a brand-new surface.
How to clean black stainless steel appliances
Black stainless steel appliances get the coated-finish treatment. Bosch's manual groups black stainless with anti-fingerprint surfaces: a soft, dry towel, warm water with mild soap for stubborn dirt, and never polish. KitchenAid uses a soft cloth and warm, soapy water. It allows a brand-approved stainless cleaner for heavy soil, but only on models without a fingerprint-resistant coating. Black stainless is named on 44 of Merit's appliance listings, among them the wine cellar in our write-up of the Silhouette lines, black stainless Sydney included.
Best way to clean stainless steel appliances without streaking
The way to clean stainless steel appliances without streaking is to take off every trace of what went on, then dry along the grain before the water dries by itself. Streaks, and a cloudy look after cleaning, come from wiping across the grain, from soap or cleaner left behind, or from water drying in place. KitchenAid finishes with a plain-water wipe and a thorough dry, and Maytag polishes with a clean, dry cloth along the grain.
Water plays a part too. Euro Inox advises wiping stainless dry in hard-water areas to avoid water marks and limescale. The two Island utility reports I read show soft water.
| Water supply | Hardness, as calcium carbonate |
|---|---|
| Greater Victoria transmission mains (CRD), 2024 median | 16.9 mg/L |
| North Cowichan South End system, Boys Road wells, 2025 | 21.3 mg/L at Well 1 in February, 27.0 mg/L at Well 3 in August |
| Soft, in the Canadian guideline categories | under 60 mg/L |
| Very hard, in the same categories | 180 mg/L or more |
Private wells are another matter. The Regional District of Nanaimo's fact sheet says groundwater tends to be harder than surface water. Of nearly 12,000 BC well samples tested between 1977 and 1993, 27% came in at 180 mg/L or more. On a hard well, drips under a fridge dispenser can dry into white limescale spots, which is what Euro Inox's diluted vinegar is for.
Salt air and stainless steel appliances on Vancouver Island
Salt air matters to stainless steel appliances mainly outdoors and in damp, unheated spaces. ASSDA's technical guide on coastal tea staining, a brown discolouration, finds it most common within about five kilometres of the surf. Wind, pollution and heat can push it to 20 kilometres or more, and it's much less severe around sheltered bays. ASSDA adds that tea staining is rare indoors.
So a fridge in a heated Island kitchen is in the easy case. The ones to watch are a beer fridge in an open carport, a bar fridge by the barbecue, or a cabin left closed and damp all winter. Sea salt stays wet down to a very low humidity, ASSDA notes, so a salt film keeps working longer than dust. On those I'd wash, rinse and dry every so often, and skip the chloride and bleach cleaners that Frigidaire and Euro Inox warn about.
A beverage fridge headed for a garage has its own questions, set out where we compare wine coolers, beverage centres and the spots each can stand. The coast's effect on other materials comes up in our guide to leather care in an Island house.
How to make stainless steel look new again, and remove discolouration
Making stainless steel look new again starts with a full wash, rinse and dry. For stains and discolouration on plain steel, Whirlpool and Maytag rub a paste of baking soda and water gently along the grain, then wipe off any white residue. For a stubborn spot they try diluted vinegar, wiped away at once. Bosch's manual then suggests a stainless steel polish on plain stainless to seal and protect it.
A discoloured fridge with a coated finish is different, because the coating itself may be marked or worn. I can't offer a home fix for that. I'd call the maker's service line with the model number before trying anything stronger than soap. I'd keep a melamine sponge, sold as Magic Eraser, off appliance fronts too. None of the seven makers lists one, and KitchenAid and LG rule out abrasive cleaners.
Stainless steel cleaning mistakes that can damage an appliance
The stainless steel cleaning mistakes that do real damage are mostly chemistry and grit, and the first is a safety matter.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia, the ingredient in many glass cleaners. Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with ammonia or any acid, vinegar included, and can make toxic gases such as chloramine. Canadian Poison Centres had more than double the chloramine reports in October and November 2020 than in the same months of 2019. If someone may have breathed it in, call a poison centre or your health care provider right away.
- Polish, stainless cleaner or oil on a coated finish. KitchenAid, Frigidaire and Bosch each rule out one or more of the three.
- Steel wool or scouring powder on any finish. Bosch's manual adds that even sponges could scratch the surfaces.
- Paper towels or newspaper on fingerprint-resistant steel, which KitchenAid says can scratch or dull it, and bleach-based wipes, which Bosch says could damage the surface.
Our own counts have a limit. They come from listing titles, and some listings offer the finish as a choice, so the true number of coated models on Merit's site differs a little. The finish name on the model in front of you is the one to go by.

Asking about stainless appliance finishes at Merit
Stainless appliances on Merit's site come two ways. Some are carried at our Campbell River store or at Port Alberni. Those two stores are the ones to call about an appliance they list, and it's worth asking which models are set up before the drive. Taking a model number home to read its manual first is a sound idea. For a dishwasher, ask about the inside too, since a stainless or plastic tub changes drying and noise.
Call Campbell River, (250) 286-0868
Call Port Alberni, (250) 724-6644
Most stainless listings are special orders with no store attached. Each one shows its price and a number to call to order, the special-order line below.
